True Devotion to Mary by Bro. Ando Perlas (SF Senatus Workshop Saint Finn Barr, June 23, 2013) In order for a Legionary to completely understand the spirit of the Legion and that of the Handbook, one must have an understanding of Saint Louis Marie de Montfort s treatise on True Devotion to Mary. This is because the spirituality of the Legion, its apostolic and devotional system was founded on the very principles of De Montfort s True Devotion. Therefore, to be a true Legionary, one must possess the true spirit of true devotion to Mary. To be a true Legionary one must be a true devotee of Mary, and to be a true devotee of Mary, one must be her SLAVE. Frank Duff states this in the Handbook very eloquently: That Devotion requires the formal entry into a compact with Mary, whereby one gives to her one s whole self with all its thoughts and deeds and possessions, both spiritual and temporal, past, present and future without the reservation of the smallest part or the slightest little thing. In a word, the giver places himself in a condition equivalent to that of a slave possessing nothing of his own, and wholly dependent on, and utterly at the disposal of Mary. When I read this, the last five words of the sentence stuck to my mind: UTTERLY AT THE DISPOSAL OF MARY. And the more I meditate on these words, the more I realized that my life has completely taken a 360 degree turn. My ambitions and plans in life were shattered completely because they were all selfish. To be at her disposal, I knew I need to be ready to accept from her any command she wishes for me to fulfill, even if it means giving to her my liberty, freedom and my life. This slavery has no guarantee for any of us as it will entail sacrifices and sufferings. The only guarantee is that at the end, she will show us the fruit of her womb, Jesus. According to Saint Louis Marie de Montfort, the object of true devotion is - Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ. Our Saviour, true God and true man, should be the final end of all our other devotions; for otherwise, they would be false and deceitful. Our goal therefore in our devotion to Mary, is none other but to establish more perfectly the worship of Jesus Christ and to provide an easier and safer way by which we can find Jesus Christ. Stated in a different way, the goal of true devotion to Mary is to be like Christ. To be like him, we are to become perfect in our ways, in our prayer life and in our holiness. True devotion to Mary leads to Christianity through the worship of Jesus thru Mary. Since our perfection consists in our being conformed, united and consecrated to Jesus Christ, the most perfect of all devotions is undoubtedly the one which most perfectly conforms, unites and consecrates us to this perfect model of all holiness. Now, since Mary is among all creatures the most conformed to Jesus Christ, it follows that, of all the devotions, that which best consecrates and conforms us to Our Lady is devotion to the Blessed Virgin, His Holy Mother; and that the more we are consecrated to Mary, the more perfectly we are united with Jesus Christ. Let s pause here for a while and notice that the object of the Legion and the object of True Devotion to Mary and the object of all Christianity are one and the same: HOLINESS in Page 1

Jesus Christ. For the Legion, the goal of our membership is to make us holy by living a grace-filled life of prayer and action. If we analyze this further, Frank Duff s approach to a Christian life is essentially one and the same as Saint Louis Marie De Montfort Jesus Christ as the final end. After all this is what we are begging our Mother to do at the end of our life and after this our exile show unto to us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. After having clearly defined our goal, now the most challenging part begins how do we get there? And by what means to we get there? Herein lies one of the most controversial aspects of our Catholic religion as opposed to other Christian religions. For some of us in the Catholic Church (because not all will agree) the way to reach Jesus Christ is through the Blessed Virgin Mary. I put emphasis on the word some as not all Catholics would agree on this. For other Christian religions, they believe that the way to Jesus is a direct path, ignoring Mary and her role as the Mediatrix of all Graces. To Jesus Through Mary - Saint Louis Marie de Montfort however believes that the path to Jesus Christ has to go through the woman by which Incarnation was made possible. He states the following: Hence it is the most perfect consecration to Jesus Christ is none other than an entire and perfect consecration of ourselves to the Most Blessed Virgin the devotion which I advocate; or in other words, a perfect renewal of the vows and promises of our Holy Baptism. As Jesus is the Mediator between man and God, it follows too that man needs a mediator before Jesus Christ. This fundamental truth that we need Mary in order to reach or find Jesus Christ is very difficult to accept even among us Catholics. This is because many have forgotten the fact that we owe Mary our salvation. Yes, Jesus is our savior, who in his humanity suffered a cruel death for our sins but as Saint Louis Marie de Montfort stated: It is through Mary that the salvation of the world begun and it is through Mary that it is to be consummated. Also, because of the corrupt nature of man, we cannot possibly approach God by ourselves alone. It is more perfect to approach God through a mediator and not by ourselves, if we rely upon our own efforts to reach God, we being so corrupt, it is certain that even our noblest attempts will fail to induce Him to unite Himself to us and to answer our prayers. Frank Duff expresses this quite in a dramatic fashion in the Handbook (p.49): The Eucharist is the center and source of grace: therefore it must be the very keystone of the Legionary scheme. The ardent activity will accomplish nothing of value if it forgets for a moment that its main object is to establish the reign of the Eucharist in all hearts. As Saint Bernard has said, we need a mediator with the Mediator and that the one who most able to fulfill this office is Mary. Through her the mediator came to us and through her we must go to the mediator. Saint Louis de Montfort puts this in another perspective: Since she is the sure means and the straight and stainless way by which we walk towards Christ and find him perfectly, it is through Mary that the souls destined for giant sanctity in those latter days, are to find Christ. Whoever finds Mary shall find life that is shall find Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. But he cannot find Mary who does not seek herm nor will he seek Mary unless he knows her, for one does not seek or desire an unknown good; therefore Mary is to be better known than ever before, to the greater knowledge and glory of the Most Holy Trinity. Page 2

BRINGING MARY TO THE WORLD Thus, to bring Christ to the world and to bring the salvation of souls, we must first bring Mary to the world and let her be known for it is in her that the secret of salvation lies. Frank Duff expresses the above thoughts in the Handbook as well. The Legion's trust in Mary is limitless, knowing that by the ordinance of God, her power is without limit. All that he could give to Mary, he has given to her. All that she was capable of receiving she has received in plenitude. For us God has constituted her a special means of grace. Operating in union with her we approach him more effectively, and hence win grace more freely. He then expresses this sentiment that Mary needs to be known to the world as Saint Louis Marie de Montfort has intimated: If devotion to Mary will work such wonders, then the great purpose must be to bring that instrument to bear, to bring Mary to the world. And how more effectively can this be done than through an apostolic organization; lay-hence unlimited as to numbers; active-hence penetrating everywhere; loving Mary with all its might, and binding itself to involve the hearts of all others in that love; utilizing all its avenues of action to fulfill this purpose. And so, bearing her name with an inexpressible pride; built as an organisation upon an unbounded and childlike trust in her, to which it gives solidity by planting it in the heart of each individual one of its members: possessing then these members as working parts acting in a perfect harmony of loyalty and discipline-the Legion of Mary does not think it presumption, but rather a right degree of confidence to believe that its system forms, as it were, a mechanism which only requires operating by the hand of authority to compass the world, and which Mary will deign to use as an agency to accomplish her maternal work for souls, and to carry on her perpetual mission of crushing the head of the serpent. So now that we know that Mary is the way to Jesus Christ, we must therefore entrust ourselves to her motherly care and that is by practicing in our lives the right and true devotion to her. But before we can speak of true devotion, we must first speak of FALSE devotions. What is False Devotion? According to Saint Louis Marie de Montfort, the devil is a great counterfeit master. He is a sly forger, amuses and dupes people into sin by making them think that a few prayers and a few exterior devotions inspired by him are the best devotions. De Montfort warns us of the false devotees of Mary. He classifies these false devotees as: Page 3 Critical proud scholars, people of independent and self-satisfied minds. Deep down in their hearts they may have some devotion to the Blessed Virgin but they object to most of the humble and simple ways of showing love that most humble and simple people use. They discredit all miracles and all stories of the Virgin s power. When someone mentions to them something said about Mary by the Fathers of the Church, they sneer.

Scrupulous these are people who imagine that they are dishonoring Jesus by honoring Mary. These are people who think there is a competition between Mary and Jesus. They will find it offensive to see more people kneeling and praying the Rosary in front of the image of the Blessed Mother versus those praying before the tabernacle. These are people who say let s have the real thing, Jesus Christ. Let s have devotion to Jesus Christ. Let s preach Jesus, nothing else. Jesus is our only mediator. What they say to Jesus is true but in a way to prevent devotion to Mary. Remember, we never give more honor to Jesus when we honor Mary. We go to her, only to find him. The Holy Church with the Holy Ghost, blesses our Lady first and Jesus second. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Not that our Lady is more than Christ because that is sheer heresy. But it is true, that in order to bless Jesus more, we must first bless Mary. Exterior false devotees are those for whom Marian devotion consists only in outward show. They relish this kind of thing because they have no interior spirit. They will say the Rosary hastily and attend Mass without attention. They will enroll themselves in all confraternities of Mary without reforming their lives. They say their prayers by fits and starts. Presumptuous false devotees are sinners who are abandoned to their vices. With semblance of their devotion to her, they conceal pride, avarice, impurity, drunkenness, anger, profanity, gossip and all sorts of injustices. They sleep peacefully with their evil habits. Because they are devotees of the Blessed Mother, they think without amending their lives, God will forgive them. That they will not die without the sacraments nor be damned. They abuse the devotion to Mary. The worst and least pardonable sacrilege is to make a bad Communion the one committed by the presumptuous is the next one. Inconstant are those who are devout to Our Lady at intervals and according to their own whims. At times they are fervent. At times they are tepid. At times they are ready to do anything in the service of the woman best beloved in heaven and on earth. And at times they are bored with praying to her. Hypocritical are those who hide their ugliness of soul from the eyes of others by flying the banner of Our Lady. Interested They are more devoted to themselves than to Our Lady. They want something from her (money, wealth, health and power). However, if these needs do not exist, they will forget about her. WHAT IS TRUE DEVOTION? Now that we know what false devotion is, then what is True Devotion to Mary? First, of all true devotion is INTERIOR (it comes from the mind and from the heart). It is TENDER (full of trust in the Blessed Virgin. Like the trust of a child to his mother. It prompts one to seek her in all our needs, body and soul and to do it with great simplicity, confidence and tenderness). It is HOLY (true devotion leads us to avoid sin and to imitate her profound humility, lively faith, obedience, unceasing prayer, all embracing mortification, purity, charity and heroic patience. Page 4

Page 5 It is CONSTANT (it strengthens us in doing good and prevents us from frivolously abandoning our devotional practices; it gives us to the courage to stand up to the world and to reject the ways and the wisdom of the world. It enables us to fight the flesh with its passions and the devil with his temptations. It is DISINTERESTED (it inspires the soul to seek not itself but God alone. A true devotee of Mary does not seek self-gain, nor self-interest nor a view to obtaining temporal, physical or even spiritual benefits. We do not serve her because of some reward, but because she deserves to be served and God alone to be served in our serving her. INTERIOR PRACTICES OF TRUE DEVOTION There are several interior practices of true devotion to Mary: Honoring her as the worthy Mother of God, esteeming her above all others as the masterpiece of grace and the first after Jesus Christ, Who is True God and True Man Meditating on her virtues, privileges, actions Contemplating her splendors Offering her acts of love, praise and thanks Doing everything with the object of pleasing her To begin, to continue and to finish each action through her in her, with her and for her that we may do them through Jesus, in Jesus and with Jesus and for Jesus, our Last End. EXTERIOR PRACTICES OF TRUE DEVOTION Exterior practices of true devotion to Mary include the following: Enrolling oneself into Mary s confraternities and joining her congregations Entering the religious orders instituted in her honor Proclaiming her praises Fasting, giving alms, denying oneself in her honor Wearing her liveries such as her scapular and the Rosary, or the little chaplet, or a chain token of slavery to her Reciting with attention, devotion or the entire fifteen decades Singing spiritual canticles to her or having them sung to her Genuflecting or bowing to her every morning while greeting her with the hymn Hail Mary, Faithful Virgin Taking care of her confraternities, adoring her altars when possible and seeing that her pictures or statues are well displayed and clean. Carrying little images of her as powerful weapons against evil spirits Painting picture of her or having them painted and making them public Consecrating oneself to her in a special and solemn manner PERFECT CONSECRATION TO JESUS CHRIST - According to Saint Louis Marie de Montfort, that while all the above devotions bring honor to the Blessed Mother, the most perfect of all devotion to the Blessed Mother is the one the best consecrates and conforms a soul to Jesus Christ. This is why the perfect consecration to Jesus Christ is nothing less than a perfect consecration to Mary. This consecration of ourselves to Jesus through Mary

is likewise a renewal of our vows and promises of our Holy Baptism in such a way that it requires one to reject all sin and Satan. This devotion consists in giving oneself entirely to Mary. We must give ourselves entirely to her: Page 6 Our body with all its senses and members Our soul with all its powers Our material possessions and all that we may acquire Our interior and spiritual possessions, our merits, our virtues, our good works, past, present and future WHAT ARE THE MOTIVES OF THIS CONSECRATION? First Motive: - the least servant of God is richer, more powerful and much nobler than all the kings and emperors on earth. No one can repay any soul who has given himself to Jesus through Mary with all the gold on earth and all the beauties of heaven. Second Motive by consecrating ourselves to Jesus through Mary, we received God s graces through her alone. God knows we are unworthy of receiving through her hands all He wants to give us. He also finds His glory in receiving through her hands the thanks, the respect and the love we owe Him. Third Motive those who give themselves entirely to her, she will give herself entirely to them. She will surrender you with her graces, adorn you with her merits, support you with her power, and enlighten you with her light. She will inflame you with her love. She will make herself your surety with Jesus. She will supply all that is lacking in you. She will be your dear self with her Divine Son. When one has given God all his good works through Mary, she purifies them, makes them beautiful and makes them acceptable to God. She washes all stains of self-love from them and all the blemishes that creep. Fourth Motive If we are faithful to true devotion, we may be assured that the value of all our good works are being used for the greater glory of God. Fifth Motive those who consecrate themselves to Mary will find the road to Jesus gentle and more peaceful. It is true that one will find great difficulties and fierce battles but our Mother will be ever so near to light the darkness, to clear away doubts, to give strength, to banish fear and to help in every way. The bitter pills given them are coated with the sweetness of their Holy Mother s love. Sixth Motive gives one interior liberty and freedom. Through this devotion, we make ourselves the slaves of Jesus Christ and in return (1) removes from our soul every scruple and every servile fear (2) throws open our hearts by giving us a firm trust in God and (3) inspires us to a tender and filial love. Seventh Motive this devotion procures mighty benefits for our neighbors. Out of our charity and through our Mother, Mary, we give them the satisfactory and prayer value of all our good works. We agree that all we have earned and will earn in the way of spiritual riches will be used either for the conversion of sinners or the deliverance of souls in purgatory. Eight Motive this devotion is an excellent means to perseverance. Many sinners lapsed back into sin after they have been converted. Virtuous people do not continue to grow in virtue. It is because they trust in themselves alone. In true devotion to

Mary, we put all out trust in her. We rely upon her power. We lean on her mercy and love. We know she will not only keep our spiritual riches intact but she will embellish and multiply them. We talk to her as a child might something after this fashion: Mother, I know I have received a lot of graces from God. I know they came through you. And I know I don t deserve all that, nor any part of it. But listen! I m too little, too miserable, too mean and too afraid to keep all these treasures. Keep them for me! Then I shall not have anything to fear not even myself. FORMAL ACT OF CONSECRATION Now that we know what true devotion is and the motives for doing it, the next logical step is for us to say yes, and enter the FORMAL ACT OF CONSECRATION. But before we do that, we must understand that this formal act of consecration is only a part of true devotion. What is important is the daily living of true devotion making us constantly aware that Mary, Our Mother is now in possession of our lives all benefits and graces that will be derived from our good works. Therefore, it will be shameful on our part not to strive for Christian perfection by engaging in sinful acts, thoughts and behavior. It will also be shameful if we cannot, because of our pride and stubbornness, persevere in sanctifying grace because we can no longer offend Christ and Our Lady. Thus, true devotion to Mary is the road to our sanctity which is the object and goal of the Legion of Mary! PREPARATION FOR THE TOTAL ACT OF CONSECRATION - before one can make the formal act of consecration, Saint Louis Marie de Montfort recommends a 33 day preparation process. Ideally, the formal act which consists of series of prayers, readings and reflections should culminate on a Feast Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For the Legion, the ACIES ceremonies suffice as that formal act of consecration to Our Lady. However, where we have been successful in gathering Legionaries each year, we still as an organization need to improve on two aspects of this function: 1) Preparation to the ACIES must be taught and explained to all active and auxiliary members so that the act of consecration becomes meaningful so that on that day forward, we become truly the slaves of Mary and 2) we need to teach and promote True Devotion to Mary y Saint Louis Marie De Montfort and Total Consecration To Jesus Through Mary to all Catholics, priests and laity included. My challenge to all Praesidia and council officers is to get together and put our thinking caps on and find a way to get to teach others. Of course, we must begin with ourselves by studying and reading De Montfort s books. Finally, I believe that the Legion of Mary can only achieve the holiness it desires for its members if all of us will live and practice our Devotion to Mary every moment of our life. It is my hope that through our Total Consecration, Our Blessed Mother will show us the fruit of her womb Jesus Christ. Page 7
