EDITORIAL From the Waldo Malan Editor Melanie Flanegan Sub-Editor Jayson Duncan Graphic Designer Johandre Janse van Rensburg Graphic Designer Well, one month away from official Springtime, and we are shrugging off the last vestiges of winter. Days are getting longer, nights are getting shorter, and our anticipation at taking a nice break is steadily building up. I find it encouraging that no matter where I am, on what day or in which season, God is faithfully by my side. With great confidence I can echo David s exclamation that with God on my side I can scale any wall. In David s context, walls were super-important, since they were the first line of defence for any city. A city with secure walls was a safe city. Also, a prosperous city! Interestingly, when God took the Israelites into the Promised Land, the first thing that happened was that God made the walls of Jericho fall! It was as if the removal of these walls were a sign and stamp of approval on the Israelite s promise from God. So yes, when David declares that he can scale any wall, not in his own strength, but with God on his side, then I agree. Every day and season brings with it challenges unique to that time. At times these may seem overwhelming and may even cause us to temporarily stumble, but they can be overcome. No person has a life devoid of challenges, so best we gird up our loins, take courage and face these when they appear. Our great comfort is that we don t need to face these on our own, but with just a small bit of faith, we can rely on God to get past any wall. 6 FAITH LIFE Infused With Inner Strength BY JENNY ROEBERT It doesn t take much for people to find reason to fear in today s world. There is precious little hope and security for anyone s future when you see the trouble governments all over the world, are in. We live in dangerous and uncertain times and it is affecting people everywhere, from every walk of life. Where do people find the strength to keep fortified and purposeful while the world around them is falling apart? I believe a good place to start, is to realize and identify our enemy and strategically make a purposeful stand against it. Its name is fear and it is the enemy of our souls. As children of God, in this world, we have to deliberately stand against fear in our lives. It is a powerful, destructive force that will paralyse our faith and destroy all hope in us, should we give it any place. Dwelling on the negativity around us, until it becomes more dominant than the promises of God, will cause fear to overwhelm our thoughts, and allow despair to overpower us. The wonderful news is, as children of God, we don t have to be a part of the fearful! We don t have to fret and lose sleep. Anxiety over our future and that of our children, does not have to enter our hearts or minds. The apostle Paul knew all about the fight against fear and its destructive forces. I believe he became a first class soldier in his stand to oppose it. Paul understood how to live courageously and in Devine peace, in the midst of extreme pressure and trouble. One of my favourite scriptures is found in Philippians 4:13, when he declared what kept him in a place of supernatural victory, no matter how fearsome the turmoil around him or the attack against him. He said, I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ s sufficiency]. (Amplified) So what is this inner strength that infused Paul and caused him to overcome fear and remain strong and purposeful in his life? Well, the scripture makes it pretty clear that Paul received supernatural, inner strength from being in Christ Jesus. Because the Spirit of God is alive and strong in every believer, His glorious overcoming power is alive in us too. The power of God residing in every born again believer is an explosive power and it is demonstrated in our lives by a mighty supernatural inner strength. The very same strength Paul was speaking about in Philippians 4:13. In fact, Paul speaks about this power that produces inner strength, when he instructs us to be,...strong in the Lord... while we battle against fear and overcome it (Ephesians 6:10). This strength producing power of God, residing in every believer, has the ability to supercharge us and fortify us from the inside, and has a remarkable effect on every area of our lives. Just like Romans 8:11 says: But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. The word quicken is the Greek word zoopoieo, from the word zoe and poieo. The word zoe is the Greek word for life, and it often describes the life of God. The word poieo means to do. When these two words are compounded together, it means to make alive with life. It carries the idea to revitalize, to rejuvenate, or to refresh with new life! This same inner strength had a profound effect on the life of Jesus, when He was facing extreme despair in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was faced with the reality of having to suffer for the sins of mankind in the most brutal, painful and shameful way and He would have to do it alone. The emotional pressure and strain caused His human strength and hope to drain from Him and He began to sweat blood. Then, in Luke 22:43, we read how an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened Him. That word strengthened comes from a Greek word, enischuo. This is a compound of the words en and ischuos. The word en means in, and the word ischuos is the word for might or strength. Compounded together, the new word means to impart strength; to empower someone; to fill a person with heartiness; or to give someone a renewed vitality. A person may have been feeling exhausted and depleted, but he suddenly gets a blast of energy so robust that he is instantly recharged! Now he is ready to get up, get with it, and get going again! Enischuos power/ strength reminds us of our purpose. Now, since the power of God already resided in Jesus, we know the Angel didn t give Jesus that strength, instead, he must have said something to Jesus to cause that inner strength to be activated and rise up strong from the power inside of Him. I believe that Angel must have reminded Jesus of His purpose! Could it be that Jesus mind was so distracted and overwhelmed by the pressure of what He would have to endure without His Father s presence, that He lost focus of the promise of victory that was already proclaimed over Him? And when He was reminded of that victory, that power of God that was alive inside of Him, rose up strong and began to recharge and rejuvenate His Spirit and quicken His mind and body. I can just imagine how He must have stood up, strong and purposeful, shaking off his discouragement and calling His disciples, walked towards the very purpose that he was shrinking from moments before. Then, when the temple guards and Pharisees came to arrest Him, and asked which one was Jesus. The Bible describes how, with a sure strength of conviction, Jesus deliberately declared, I am He. At the mention of His words, that demonstrative power of God that was activated and alive inside of Him, came forth from those words with such force that the entire army of men fell flat on their backs. Because of the mighty inner strength that was pulsating through Him, from the power of God, alive in His Spirit; Jesus made it very clear that no person, army or principality, would ever have the power to take His life from Him. Rather, it was by His own will to obey His Father and lay His life down for mankind, that would cause Him to die on purpose that day. His love and devotion for His Father and each one of us, caused a joyful strength to rise up and fortify Him every step to the cross. Mighty, inner strength had overpowered despair that day, as purpose overshadowed fear. Just the same, each child of God, has within us the power of God that produces the inner strength to rejuvenate, endure and victoriously overcome anything we face in this life. When God s promises of purpose dominate our thinking, they overshadow all fear and activate the power of God inside us to rise up and infuse us with inner strength. So that we too, like Paul, can say, I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ s sufficiency]. 8 ENJOYING EVERYDAY LIFE T H E B E S T LEADER F O R Y O U R L I F E BY JOYCE MEYER What does it mean to be led by the Holy Spirit? Some may refer to it as being filled with or sensitive to or anointed by the Spirit. It sounds really spiritual, but being led by the Spirit is actually a very practical part of living the Christian life. Simply put, to be led by the Holy Spirit just means to be obedient to Him. The Holy Spirit does such awesome, yet practical work in the lives of God s children. He is our Comforter, Counsellor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener and Standby. He teaches us and guides us into truth and He even brings the things we learn back to our remembrance as we need it. And the best part of it all is that He lives in each of us. Ephesians 3:16 (AMPC) tells us that He enables us to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality]. He comes to live in our hearts when we re born again, and then He teaches and guides us according to God s plan and purpose for us. One of the ways He does this is by convicting us of the sins in our life, and we learn what s right and wrong as we grow in our faith. We may get by with things that are not right for a while, but the time comes when we need to grow up. I remember when I would go to church every Sunday and then gossip about the pastor or whatever I didn t like about the service. 6 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

Of course, I was not a very happy Christian during that time. And I couldn t have been a very good example of one to others either. Critical and judgmental attitudes like that, or murmuring, being unthankful, and complaining hinder our relationship with God and our representation of what a Christian is. But eventually, I began to get this nagging, uneasy feeling every time I would say something negative about the pastor or anyone else for that matter. I could feel that what I was saying was wrong, and I knew in my heart it was the Holy Spirit telling me it was time to grow up and mature spiritually. Now, I am immediately aware when I say or do something that is not pleasing to God. And this is what He wants for all His children: to develop sensitivity and obedience to His voice as He leads each of our lives. Romans 8:14 (AMPC) declares that all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. This term sons indicates a level of maturity and intimacy in our relationship with Him. God is not looking for spiritual robots; He wants sons. He doesn t want us all just following a bunch of rules for the sake of obedience. Jesus made a way, through His perfect sacrifice, for our sins to be completely washed away and removed from us so we can have a personal relationship with God. We are free to obey Him simply because we love Him and we know that everything He tells us to do, or not do, is for our good. We just need to learn to follow His lead. It s actually exciting to follow the Holy Spirit. I can tell you that life will never be boring with Him in the lead. When I first met my husband, Dave, I never would ve thought God was leading him to me. But he had been praying for a wife and particularly someone who needed help. He came to the house one day to visit a friend of his who lived upstairs from us. I was outside washing my car and he said, When you finish that one, you want to wash mine? My response was, If you want your car washed you can wash it yourself! It had to be the Holy Spirit Tleading Hhim, E because he says Bthat s when E he Sthought, T That s the girl for me! Everyone s story is different but the point is the Holy Spirit wants to lead us all according to the plans God has for each of our lives. I m not saying it will always be easy. King David was called a man after God s heart, but we know it wasn t because he did everything right. However, David had cultivated a passionate heart for God s will. He learned how to recover from his failures and move on in God, and because of that God testified concerning him: I Fhave Ofound David R son of Jesse, Ya man after Omy own Uheart; R he will do everything L I Iwant him F E to do (Acts 13:22 NIV). In our relationship with God, our part is to pray, study His Word, and learn to develop our own sensitivity and obedience to the Holy Spirit s lead. His promise to us is, I will give them one heart [a new heart] and I will put a new spirit within them; and I will take the stony [unnaturally hardened] heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh [sensitive and responsive to the touch of their God] (Ezekiel 11:19 AMPC). Trust the Holy Spirit and follow His lead. You ll discover His way is the best, most exciting journey you can find! 10 GRASSROOTS Beware of the Smooth Places BY ANGUS BUCHAN If we look in The Word of God at Psalm 30:6 (NKJV) we will see that David says, Now in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved (shaken). When all is well, health, finance, business and family, it is very easy to forget our dependence on the Lord Jesus Christ. A full barn makes one reluctant to get on one s knees and pray to the Lord for help, but when the barn is empty, it is very easy to seek the face of God for direction. The world-famous heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Dempsey became the champion of the world in the days of the great depression in America, in the 1930s and he said, It was very easy for me to get up in the morning and do my training exercise, jogging, weightlifting etc. when I was sleeping on a concrete floor, but when I became champion of the world and I was dressed in a silk gown, and silk pajamas, sleeping in a beautiful feather mattress bed on a cool frosty morning it was very hard for me to get out of bed. So we need to also thank God for adversity, because adversity (tribulation) brings balance. In fact, continued worldly prosperity can be a fiery trial for the believer, because Afflictions, though they seem severe, in mercy, are often sent. The Book of Romans 5:3-4 (NKJV) The Word of God says, And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Adversity develops our character and so we need thank God for good times. We need to thank God for wonderful opportunities and holidays, but at the same time we need to be aware for that is probably when the Christian is the most vulnerable. If you re honest with yourself, you will probably find the hardest time for you to get up in the morning and have a proper quiet time with the Lord is when you are on holiday. You deserve to rest and deserve to have a change of environment. Whether it be down by the sea or up in the mountains. However, sometimes because of the change of your routine and you relax when it comes to discipline you find that your quiet time probably suffers the most. That is definitely the case for me and the time that I find myself having a diligent quiet time is when I am on the road preaching overseas, with a hectic schedule and speaking every single day. I actually find that my quiet times are constant, they are pertinent and they are necessary, because I need input from the Holy Spirit in order to deliver the messages. I cannot and will not afford to miss a quiet time even on an aeroplane. Often I will wake-up in the middle of the night and ask the air hostess, What time is it? and she would say, Do you want to know the time in South Africa or the time in America. So it can be very confusing, but I need to spend time with my Lord because I know that I m at the front line and the battle is on. I really need to be hearing from my Commander General. So in times of the smooth places, be aware that the enemy will try and come in through the back door and disrupt your relationship with God. God Bless 8 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

COVER FEATURE Bruce Marchiano Life in the most desperate of human situations. COMPILED BY CHER MURPHY The new movie directed by Bruce Marchiano Alison s Choice. Bruce Marchiano is an actor, author, and international speaker best known for his actor s portrayal of Jesus in the Regardt van den Bergh film, The Gospel of Matthew. A highly acclaimed Gospel film that introduces people to an impassioned, intimate, and joyous Jesus, Matthew has been distributed across the globe, and has been used by numerous ministries, missionaries and churches for outreach and Bible study. Biblica (International Bible Society) reports that DVD distribution in China alone has long surpassed 1,000,000 copies. Marchiano is also the founder and president of Marchiano Ministries, a non-profit organization principally involved in South Africa where Bruce conducts crusades and outreaches, and provides humanitarian support to impoverished and at-risk children in the NW Province. Marchiano s newest film, Alison s Choice, marks his directorial debut, and the message of the movie has been in his heart for more than a decade. I ve always wanted to do a film about Jesus care, involvement and compassion in the midst of our human struggles. Alison s Choice is the story of a young girl struggling with an unwanted pregnancy. She opts for abortion and there in the clinic has a miraculous encounter with the Lord who has come to plead for both her life and the life of her baby. As a popular Christian speaker in the USA, Europe, Australia, etc., Marchiano has ministered the love of Jesus in every imaginable setting from churches, universities, banquets, conferences to prisons, high schools and stadiums. His message consistently centres on the person of Jesus His heart, His love, His joy and goodness. Consequently, he has witnessed hundreds of thousands of people come to Jesus as Saviour and otherwise be overwhelmed about it? What is He doing while we are all arguing about it? I felt it was important to introduce the heart of God - what would He say by His love. 10 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

I can think of no deeper struggle than a mom making a decision over the life of her baby. It s a decision millions of moms face every day so to say it is a relevant theme is an understatement. At the same time, most all we hear around this theme is political argument. I felt it was important to introduce the heart of God - what would He say about it? What is He doing while we are all arguing about it? I can t speak for Him but my best guess is He s pouring out His heart to these moms (and dads); His heart for them and for their baby. But Alison s Choice is about more than just this theme. It s about the depth of His love and care for each of us no matter our anything. Marchiano also produced and wrote the screenplay as well as reprising the role of Jesus. With no investors I reached out to the public, and everyday people from all over the world donated. The USA, Canada, South Africa, Chad, Netherlands, Romania, UK, Singapore, Australia, Argentina you name it. Now the Lord is touching lives all over the world all because of that great gathering of givers. They are the heroes of Alison s Choice. They are the ones we applaud!, says Marchiano. When asking Bruce what message he has for South African viewers specifically, he added, It s funny because I ve been asked this question many times over the many years I ve had the pleasure of making films and doing ministry in SA. I remember my first interview when I was asked this. That was back in 1993 in a small radio station in Cape Town. My answer today is the same as then: He loves you. There is nothing you can do to lessen that or make it disappear. He hand-formed you in your mother s womb - you re His baby so to speak. And His hope for your life is beyond your widest imaginings. We need only come to Him with our everything and never stop coming to Him... and thereby step into the fullness of all His heart is filled with... for you. This was the message of my first film, shot in SA, The Gospel of Matthew. And this continues as the message of Alison s Choice. Glory to Jesus!. Filled with humour, colourful characters, and Marchiano s trademark care and compassion, Alison s Choice is being heralded as a clear message of healing and hope; the most powerful film about the sanctity of life ever made. This is ultimately a story of the Lord s remarkable grace, love, passion; hope, healing and life even in the most desperate of human situations., concludes Marchiano. MORE ON MARCHIANO As an author, Marchiano has penned several books on the life and person of Jesus. Among them are Jesus Yesterday, Today & Forever, Jesus Wept, and the bestselling In the Footsteps of Jesus, all of which have been honoured by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association as Gold Medallion Finalists. Marchiano s most recent releases are The Character of a Man, a character profile of Jesus as the model of true manhood; and Jesus, the Man Who Loved Women, an exploration of Jesus heart for women. Marchiano s acting credits span decades and include numerous television shows and independent films including Murder She Wrote, Colombo, L.A. Law, Days of Our Lives; The Girl on Green Street and Final Solution, to name only a few. Marchiano s many Christian and Biblical films are too numerous to list. Popular titles include The Encounter, The Legend of the Candy Cane, Out of Jerusalem, Faith Happens, Road to Emmaus, The Last Supper, Encounter II, For Love s Sake, Revelation Road, Come Follow Me, My Son My Savior to name just a few. Marchiano holds the distinction of portraying Jesus in more films than any actor in history. It is a distinction he holds as a great honour, having witnessed countless lives drawn to Jesus through these films. WIN! WIN! WIN! WIN! WIN! WIN! WIN! WIN! 14 Safaris to Save People from all around the world can say they have experienced the thrill of a holiday safari, but only those living in the most rural parts of Tanzania know the hope of a life-saving safari flight. The word safari means journey in Swahili. The journey of a Mission Aviation Fellowship safari in Tanzania is not in a 4x4 driven by a game ranger, but rather in a Cessna 206, flown by a mission pilot. MAF s vital flights transport medical professionals and evangelists to socially and economically marginalised people in Tanzania, to those who are otherwise completely isolated from the truth of the gospel and medical care. Rural Tanzania is defined as the wilderness for good reason. Thousands of kilometres are inhabited by sparsely spread semi-nomadic tribes living in arid lands susceptible to drought. This makes life difficult. The Maasai are easily recognised by their brightly-coloured dress that has benefited the catwalks and Tanzanian tourism, but how many realise their plight? The Maasai are faced with many challenges. It is common for them to walk long distances to receive medical care at a clinic, if there is a clinic in walking distance, as well as collect water for their families and herds. They face many medical issues, some of these include women having to give birth at home after being in labour for days, and no access to vaccines for their children. Mission Aviation Fellowship, a Christian organisation that uses aircraft to help transform people physically and spiritually in the name of Jesus, set out to attend to the Maasai s plea. We began medical safaris in the late 1970s that now attend to thousands of semi-nomadic people. In 1990, the infant mortality rate for children under the age of five was at a frightening level of 166 per 1000, but in 2014 it was recorded that this number had reduced to 41 per This is partly due to the lifesaving vaccination flights provided by MAF. The World Health Organisation has recorded that this decrease can be in part attributed to improved breastfeeding practices, IMCI and high immunization coverage. South African mission pilot Kirstein Combrink reflects on the time before the medical safaris to one of the areas, Haydom, and the importance of continuing flights to Endanyawish. There was such a high infant mortality rate. If we draw back and they don t get vaccines, and there s a polio outbreak two years from now, is it better for us to respond to a major crisis or assist immediately? It s prevention at the end of the day. Help, hope and healing don t stop with the medicine, medical education and doctors that our aircraft bring. A mere 20 years ago, there were only a handful of Christians in the Malambo area. MAF is concerned about eternal value and not just meeting the immediate physical needs of people. One of the Maasai evangelists, Elisha Moita who flies with us to bring the Word of God, reports the increase since we began working, MAF is now serving an area of over people and over Christians of different denominations in the north side of Maasailand. Malambo, particularly, is serving over 5000 Christians through ten airstrips in ten villages, which makes Malambo the source of evangelism all over Maasailand. The Maasai are a people who are traditionally animistic believers and many still battle with witchcraft. Recently this year, Kirstein reported an unusual occurrence that stopped flights for four months. 12 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

Lives One morning he found his Cessna in a terrible state. The elevator of the plane was severely damaged, the fibreglass scratched off and the metal bent. After further investigation, he realised that hyenas were the culprits. Tanzanian mythology typically relates hyenas to black magic. It is commonly known that certain tribes in Tanzania will ask witch doctors to use hyenas to cause destruction in communities. The attack on MAF s Cessna cannot be concluded as an act of witchcraft, but MAF knows only too well the work they are doing is moving spiritual mountains and breaking strongholds, and no principality or power of darkness would be pleased with this kind of progress. Kirstein says, It s easy to think there are no big stories here, nothing exciting. There are no major disasters or refugee camps that we have to respond to. This kind of work is more difficult to quantify. What we re doing here, he explains, is a more sustaining work, helping people have a better life, having a lasting impact on the survival of children by getting vaccines out to the people, and helping women have safer deliveries. MAF is concerned about eternal value and not just meeting the immediate physical needs of people. Lives are not just physically saved; they are spiritually transformed for eternity. It s a calling in Christ and there s extreme value in continuing to do the work we do. - Written by Gabriella Craparo, Marketing Coordinator Sharing God s love through aviation Our vision is to see isolated people physically and spiritually transformed in the name of Jesus Christ and for all people to have access to both the gospel and resources that advance God s Kingdom. 17 You Don t Have to Be Pretty. You don t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/ partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don t owe it to your mother, you don t owe it to your children, you don t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked female. - Diana Vreeland What an honour it is to be writing an article in this special month that South Africa celebrates as Women s Month. Every single day should be celebrated; never ever wait for a special day to celebrate life, as it is a precious gift from God. I have lost count of the number of trips I have gone on with Every Tribe Mission as all have just been phenomenal! God amazes me all the time. I went on this trip not knowing what to expect but I was expectant and as always, knew the Lord was going to do something amazing and He did. He makes all things work for our good; even though I was not leading my own team this time like before, I got an opportunity to spend time with all in the group on different days. When we entered the first house, there was young man sitting on a sofa. He told us that he was ashamed of himself because he was unable to walk, from a condition called elephantiasis gigantism. He was born with big bones so his legs and his hands are bigger than the rest of his body. He was not able to finish school as children in school used to laugh at him all the time. He uses a wheelchair sometimes and there are times that his hands hurt, so he really felt like that there was nothing he can do in this life. We asked him how he sustains himself and he said he sells drugs. He said he likes selling as it makes him feel like a man. He now has the necessary funds to buy things and does not have to rely on his mother or siblings for financial assistance. I asked him what if he gets caught and end up in jail for breaking the law. He responded by saying that he does not force the people to buy the drugs so he is not doing anything wrong. He has also been in jail many times before, it does not bother him. One of the lady s in the team felt led to share how her dad was a drug dealer and almost lost his life as a result because the friends he trusted, tried to kill him because he was making so much money. Her dad ended-up in hospital and the family was left with nothing but prayer. He lost all the money he had made, in just one night! They could not even pay the hospital bill. The family prayed for him and God healed him. He accepted Christ as his Lord and saviour and they now own the biggest supermarket in their province. I asked the young man what his dream was and he started weeping. He told us he likes computers and wants to study IT. As we were talking to him we felt led to ask for the drugs or whatever he may have in his house as he made the decision to come to Christ. Just as we were about to receive the drugs, one of his customers came in and then another three more came. 1 The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, But the righteous are bold as a lion. 2 By the transgression of a land many are its princes, But by a man of understanding and knowledge, so it endures. 3 A poor man who oppresses the lowly is like a driving rain which leaves no food Proverbs 28:1-3 (NIV) The mother of the house came out of her room and was listening to everything we were saying. She told us that she is desperate for her son to stop selling drugs and only wants the best for him. She also received Christ as her Lord and saviour. The customers were waiting outside and one wanted to come in as he was in a hurry and kept on disturbing us. The mother was so angry and she told him that he needed to stop disrespecting her house like that and that he must go away. She was so bold and speaking with so much authority. We left a blessing in the house and know the Lord changed them as only He can change people. The young man refused to let us confiscate the drugs but he did give us an undertaking that he will stop dealing in drugs as soon as that particular batch was sold. It was disturbing and frightening to be in a drug dealer s house, but we operate in faith and not in fear and we know the Lord was with us, so we left the house with peace in our hearts. On my previous trip to Alexandria in November 2013, we visited a Children s Home and this young girl came up to me and just would not leave me alone, it was the sweetest thing ever. I always carry nail polish with me on missions (sweets don t work as I end up eating it all before I get a chance to hand it out!) I gave this little girl my glitter nail polish and instructed her to paint the other girls nails as well, she was so excited. Sadly, that was the last time that I saw her. When we got to the Children s Home earlier this year, I was so surprised to see this little girl and best of all, she recognized me! I gave her the biggest hug and we sat together until a teenage girl came to sit with us. Sadly, this teenager is unable to speak. I took out my lipstick and gave it to her. A smile spread across her face and she was really excited as I helped her apply the lipstick. I could see that she felt so special in that moment and her inner beauty shone through her beautiful smile. Perhaps all she needed was a little bit of my time and prayers. I trust the Lord will give them peace in their hearts and that they will grow up to be women that will make a difference in this world and reflect God s beauty. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God s sight. 1 Peter 3:3-4 (NIV) CL myfaithmag.com AUGUST

OPINION WHEN it's OK to dwell on the past By Waldo Malan Any motivational speaker, counsellor or self-help guru worth their salt will tell you straight away to get away from your past and live in the present for the future. They will also remind you that hanging on to things that happened in your past is detrimental for any future growth, and in fact, will hamper any attempt to move ahead. Of course they are right. I believe that this valuable piece of advice is straight from the heart of God He, after all, was the first one to come up with the idea that asking forgiveness for a mistake can result in the total eradication of the mistake! The really hard thing for most of us to come to terms with is not God s forgiveness, but rather the ability to forgive ourselves. So yes, we all need to move away from the past and focus on the future. However, there is an instance where it is good to remember the past. Please note that I am speaking about a simple recall and not some morbid, introspective digging-up-old-bones! The reason I believe that our past is sometimes good to remember is that it will keep us humble in our present and pave the way for a successful future. Paul writes to the Corinthian congregation, My brothers, remember what you were when God chose you (1 Corinthians 1 :26). He encourages them in the context of his conversation showing how the power of God can transform our very nature. Paul says that before encountering the gracious power of God, not many of you were wise by the way people look at it. Not many of you had power. Not many of you came from a family with a big name.but God chose things that look foolish to the people of the world. He has used those foolish things to put the wise people to shame. God chose the weak things to put to shame the strong people (1 Corinthians 1:26-28). So, by remembering our past we understand what we were before our God encounter! In the proper context this remembrance can serve not only to keep us humble, but also empower us to help other people with similar past experiences. Paul has the same advice for the believers at Ephesus by reminding them what they used to be before coming to know Christ. It is good to remember where you came from since it cultivates an appreciation of what has been done for you. In remembering our past in this manner, God is glorified, and therefore it is good to dwell on the past. Our past sins and mistakes also works as an early warning system when faced with similar temptations and issues. The old English adage says it well once bitten twice shy. So there are times when it is good to dwell on the past, albeit briefly, in order that we can live our present and plan our future. 16 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

FAITH DOME PROJECT PROGRESS REPORT DAY 442 [14 JUNE 2016] In the previous Faith Dome update news, we shared the story of Nehemiah and how the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt in just 52 days. It seems that with modern technology things take a little longer, but nonetheless we give God all the glory. We are currently standing at day 442 since the project commenced, and the last of the supporting beams are being bolted into place. Next to come is the insulation and the cladding to see this phase of the construction complete. There have been some unexpected delays, and the weather has not always been in favour of the construction, but we have forged ahead and praise the Lord for what has been accomplished. The budget is currently just 1,47% short of the final goal that translates to R of the total project budget of R30 million! We believe in God s bigger plan in making this a soul-saving facility! The support for God s vision has been overwhelming. The team of Faith Broadcasting is extremely privileged to have so many like-minded people at their side and is honoured to call them friends! We praise God for such faithful partners. There are daily calls and s from people all over the world who are pledging support, both in prayer and finances, for the Faith Dome project. We know that God commands His blessing where there is unity, and so together and united we believe to see the project complete in the very near future. For all of us at Faith Broadcasting Network this is so much more than a dome, and we thank you for supporting us in our vision. The roof covers a space where the real work is done and where the Great Commission from Jesus finds expression in what we do. All our partners are faithful in their prayer and financial support, and share in the labours for the Kingdom. We know that God will richly bless those that are concerned with matters on His heart! 18 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

CHANGE REVOLUTION BY PHIL COOKE Early in my career, I had a string of insecure bosses. Guys that would steal your ideas and take credit, criticize you in front of others, and do anything to make themselves look good. So I learned survival techniques early on. Perhaps that s why 10 years ago this commentary by Jeanne Sahadi connected with me. If you re trapped in a situation with an insecure boss, this might help transform your outlook: 20 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

Everybody s got their insecurities. But some folks are ruled by theirs. When your boss is one of them, his insecurities will rule your day and your career prospects. Insecurity is one of the most common causes of managers behaving oddly, said Shaun Belding, Handle with Care: Insecure Bosses Dealing with one is like playing catch with a knife. You never know when you re going to get cut. By Jeanne Sahadi, CNNMoney.com senior writer NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) Everybody s got their insecurities. But some folks are ruled by theirs. When your boss is one of them, his insecurities will rule your day and your career prospects. Insecurity is one of the most common causes of managers behaving oddly, said Shaun Belding, author of Winning With the Boss From Hell. You re never quite sure what to expect from them. Well, maybe there is one thing: They ll do anything to make themselves feel better, even if it s at your expense. Your best-case scenario: you manage to become a trusted ally because you learn to contort your actions and comments to soothe el jefe s quivering sense of self. Your worst-case scenario: You re perceived as a threat no matter what you do and you get fired. That happened to one woman I know whose considerable marketing talents, popularity with colleagues and ability to communicate well with top management drove her direct manager up a tree. The manager would schedule meetings on days she knew her charge wouldn t be there, let her employee do what she did best but then take credit for her work, and eventually convinced new management to oust her, despite the fact that she over-delivered on her numbers and was a top performer. You felt the manager always wanted to throw you under the bus at every turn, the fired woman said. A friend s acquaintance had a similar experience. He had a boss at a start-up who used his football-player brawn to intimidate and book knowledge to paper over his lack of real-world experience. The manager reassigned him to three new markets to sell the company s services despite the fact that the boss couldn t explain why he thought those markets could be money-makers for the company. When asked, he told his employee, That s an unfair question. Then later he told him to figure out the potential for himself. He was trying to make me unsuccessful and inherit my pipeline deals so he could get credit for making the sales, my friend s acquaintance said. Even the nice ones can be nightmares Micromanaging: Bosses who are perfectionists, terrified of making a mistake, or terrified of losing their jobs will meddle, clogging up work flow. Indecisiveness: Some bosses shy away from making the tough decisions particularly when it comes to getting rid of poor performers. That can drag down an otherwise strong team and garners the boss a reputation for being ineffective. Hide and seek: The insecure boss isn t able to give a team a sense of purpose, tends not to be very visible with employees or customers and often hunkers down in his office. Inability to give direction: You do what the guy once said he wanted, and now it turns out he wanted you to do something else. Worse, he wanted you to figure out that he wanted you to do something else and is angry that you haven t. Overcompensating: Insecurity can be disguised by bullying, arrogance or power-mongering. Putting the pin back in the grenade since you can t choose your bosses, chances are good you ll end up working for a few during your career. The absolute worst way to deal with them is to take credit for your successes without acknowledging them, or make your managers feel stupid in front of others by correcting them or questioning their decisions. But if you want to make the best of the situation, Belding and Wellins said, you might: * Recognize that when your boss is indulging his insecurities at your expense say, screaming at you that it s not necessarily about you. * Acknowledge your manager s contributions everyone likes recognition, especially insecure people. * Let your boss know that you love your job and want to have a strong working relationship with her, and ask what you can do to make it better. * Suggest ways to do things that will make your manager look like a hero. If your every move makes the boss look good, he just may become insecure about losing you. Of course, not all insecure bosses are so obvious or spiteful. But even the nicest of them can kill productivity and morale and push good employees out the door, said Rich Wellins, senior vice president of human-resource consulting firm Development Dimensions International. Driven by fear, envy or just serious self-doubt, a boss s insecurities can manifest as: CL myfaithmag.com AUGUST

CHANGE REVOLUTION BY PHIL COOKE I ve been reading with some amusement about the outrage from Christians over the recent Saturday Night Live satire of the movie God s Not Dead 2. Sure there s a few cringe moments that sting, but let me offer a different thought about the sketch: Consider that for something to get on Saturday Night Live s national stage means that it s made a significant dent in the culture. For a movie to get parodied on that show means it broke through and captured an wide audience. After all, SNL doesn t joke about issues their viewers haven t heard anything about. God s Not Dead 2 suffers from issues that most sequels suffer from ( Hey, the first movie made a lot of money so quick let s come up with a follow up. ) It wouldn t necessarily have been my personal answer to the cultural issue it highlights, but it was a box office success. And rather than complain that SNL is making fun of the film, I m thrilled that the movie generated such a buzz that SNL felt they needed to respond. The bottom line is this: If Christians get so offended at every little slight, what do we possibly have to offer the world? If we have so little backbone when the going gets tough, why in the world would anyone seek our help when they experience times of trouble? You don t have to go far to read about Christians in other countries who are experiencing real persecution. Mothers being raped in front of their husbands and children. Fathers executed in front of their families. Beheadings. Rape has become a weapon of war in the ISIS effort to stamp out any trace of Christianity in the Middle East. But in the United States, Christians are outraged when we re made fun of in a comedy show. It s no wonder the culture doesn t see much reason to listen to our message or seek us out when times get tough. Certainly our rights as Christians in this country are being infringed on a regular basis, and every day, Christians face a culture that s growing more and more hostile. And this isn t to criticize those on the front lines of those very real battles. But whining about every little slight doesn t help. In fact, it just emboldens the critics to keep pushing. How about this: Instead of whining and complaining, what if we started doing such remarkable things in the culture that the world would be forced to re-think who we are and who the God is we serve? Throughout the New Testament book of Mark, people were astonished because Jesus teaching had authority. 22 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL

BOOKWORMS FOOL ONCE ME FOOL ME ONCE is a fast-moving, multi-layered, multi-murder mystery, standalone novel which ticks all the boxes. The suspense keeps you guessing right to the very end and is sure to entertain the reader. Maya Stern has suffered more than her fair share of tragedy. Her career as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot came to an end after whistle-blower Corey Rudzinski exposed the civilian deaths caused by her actions in Iraq. Even worse, her husband, Joe Burkett, is shot to death in front of her in Manhattan s Central Park, though Maya is able to give a good description of the masked killers to an NYPD homicide detective. Maya is already dealing with the nightmares from her combat experiences and the murder of her sister, Claire, four months earlier while Maya was stationed in Kuwait. Then, weeks after Joe s funeral, a recently installed nanny cam shows her two-year-old daughter, Lily, climbing onto Joe s lap. This book is such a spine tingling, page turner! It was hard to put this down and go about other things when I had to I would highly recommend this book to others. I really think that any reader who enjoys a cleverly plotted book filled with twists and turns will enjoy this one. CL myfaithmag.com AUGUST

True compassion for non-christians lies not in letting them go their way while we go ours but rather in sharing the only true way with them. 28 FAITH KIDS BY ESTHER SAUNDERS Today is a very special day, Jazz and I got to bring our completed art work home to show to our parents. Jazz painted a beautiful picture of the sea close to where we live for daddy, and I made mommy a clay flower pot. Jazz and I have been working on these projects for 4 weeks in art class. It was really hard work and in the beginning my pot didn t look like a pot at all, it was flat and shaped kind of funny and I kept having to squash the clay back into a ball and start again. Once I had gotten the shape right it took some time to smooth the edges. After 3 weeks I had finished moulding the pot so with the help of my teacher I put it in the clay oven to bake so that it could become hard and durable so that it doesn t break when mommy uses it. This week marked the final and most fun of all the steps to making the flower pot as I got to decorate it. Mommy loves red and orange so I painted it with a zigzag pattern and stuck round beads along the edge. Finally my masterpiece was complete. When mommy saw it she had the biggest smile and gave me a hug and a kiss. Daddy was so impressed with Jazz s painting that he took us both for ice cream at the beach. Dear Lord, thank you for creating me and starting this work in me to make me a masterpiece. Help me to follow and obey You as you mould me every day. Amen We learn at Sunday school that we are like a special art project to God. We start as tiny babies and as we grow up He uses different ways to shape us into who He has planned for us to be. God has all these really cool plans for us to be extraordinary and to have a life filled with hope, love, peace and joy and a bright future. Just like I worked on mommy s pot until it was completed, so God works on us every day, through the words we hear from the Bible, through what mommy and daddy teaches us and also when we pray through the Holy Spirit who works in our hearts to squash us and smooth away all our rough and sinful edges. The greatest and most important step in our process to becoming a masterpiece for God is when we ask Jesus to come and live in our hearts. One day when God has completed His work in and through us we will meet Him in heaven and Jesus will show us off as a perfect masterpiece to His Father and we will be welcomed into the arms of God and receive a great reward. 26 AUGUST 2016 myfaithmag.com CL
