editorial OUR CONTRIBUTORS Waldo Malan EDITOR Jayson Duncan GRAPHIC DESIGNER Johandré J.v. Rensburg GRAPHIC DESIGNER FROM THE EDITOR Time is a strange, constant and relentless thing. I thought of calling it a machine or a monster, but then decided that time is actually not a negative concept, or something to be feared. So I settled for thing. Depending on how we approach time, and how we deal with it, will determine whether, indeed, it is a friend or foe in our lives. We learn from God that all of us have been appointed a span of time; somewhat like the master in the story told by Jesus who gave his servants talents. If we have been given just a certain amount of time, we should take careful stock how we invest it, so that ultimately, we may have a good return on investment. We are standing at February, meaning that the holidays are over, and for some of us, many of those noble New Year s resolutions made a month ago are already forgotten. We are back in the swing of things busy with our lives. I read some of Solomon s observations yesterday, where he said that the unintentional and lazy person will always have lack, but that intentional, focused and diligent persons will make rich. I realized that Solomon wasn t only refereeing to the fact that if we work hard we will make a lot of money, but rather that if we are intentional in the way we live, we will be rich in spirit and character. The challenge all of us face is how we are living today, and also how we will choose to live tomorrow. What is it that we will occupy our limited time with? And, of course, when our time eventually runs out, have we made a valuable investment that gave us a return beyond expectation? My prayer for you, as it is for myself, is that we may find the grace to buy out our time, and that we will invest so wisely according to God s methods that we will be astounded at the return. Let us choose, therefore, to invest in those things that have eternal consequences, and not waste, or throw away time on things that ultimately matter nothing at all. 6 faith life THE BLESSING AT WORK ANDRÉ & JENNY ROEBERT It is always good to remember that attention always precedes desire. When we delight ourselves in God s Word, giving it the attention it deserves, our desire for the things of God begins to increase. Feeding our spirits with the Word, and delighting in its truth and hope, increases our understanding of Who God is to us, His marvellous ways and His promises concerning us. Kenneth Copeland writes, God s WORD will take you from living outside that BLESSING where storms, disasters and hard times tear up and destroy things, to living inside it, appropriating THE BLESSING in your own life and replenishing the earth around you with it (The Blessing of the Lord Makes Rich and Adds No Sorrow with It). Here is how the BLESSING goes to work! While we are filling our hearts and minds with the truth of God s Word, by His Spirit that indwells us, at the very same time, His presence encamps around us! Psalm 34:7, says, The Angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him [who revere and worship Him with awe] and each of them He delivers. O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good! Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who trusts and takes refuge in Him. I recently read a friend s blog on this very scripture. That word encamp is a military term meaning to settle. So, because we choose to settle into the Word of God, with a heart of love and respect for Him, He surrounds us, with His fortress of protection and peace! This, my dear friend, is part of the BLESSING! We are placed in the centre of His settlement, the safest place there is! You see, while we are centred on the Word of God, the enemy cannot infiltrate our minds with thoughts or fear or discouragement or failure! Psalms 32:7 says that He becomes our hiding place and surrounds us with songs of deliverance! That s what happens when we are completely surrounded by the Lord! Now, watch how this works: Through the day, while we are going about our areas of responsibility, because we have invested our time in God s Word, it is first and foremost on our minds and in our hearts. So we find ourselves constantly meditating on its wisdom and perspective, which begins to influence the way we think, the words we speak, our attitudes and our actions. Do you want to know what the BLESSING is doing while this takes place? The Word of God says in Psalm 5:12, that the Lord surrounds us as a shield! But this shield isn t just a form of protection. The word says,... as with a shield, the Lord surrounds us with goodwill - which is pleasure and favour! (Amplified version).

The blessing of God goes to work as our minds are filled with the thoughts and purposes of Him, and from our time spent delighting in His Word, we begin to respond to circumstances from that state of mind. Our first response becomes God s response and when we stick to that response, the BLESSING works to bring supernatural pleasure and favour every time. What about the times we miss it, when our emotions and frustrations get the better of us and we don t respond from the wisdom of God s Word? Like Adam, do we forfeit the BLESSING too? Absolutely not! Jesus secured the BLESSING for us with His blood. It s ours to appropriate and enjoy. However, when we choose to not walk in it, it doesn t remove itself from us, we simply walk away from it. But there is nothing stopping us from realising our error, turning around, and walking straight back into it again! That s called repentance - it simply means to deliberately change our minds and go in a different direction from where we were heading. God s mercy has secured that freedom for us! And Psalm 32:10 says that God s mercy surrounds us too! So all we need to do is repent and direct our thoughts and attitudes right back to the Word of God again. That s the BLESSING! So far we ve learnt that in The BLESSING, the Lord Himself protectively encamps around us, His favour and goodness and mercy surround us, but that s not all! when we choose to make spending time in God s word a priority, and allow His wisdom to influence and transform our lives, Psalms 125:2 says that as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people! Just like those mountains, God Himself is an ever present, immovable strength and fortress around our lives. He is our protector, our provider, our comfort and our strength! Renewing our minds to the Word of God is not a retreat from our problems or an escape from reality! It s choosing to place ourselves in a state of mind where we perceive our circumstance as God does, and respond to them from a perspective of faith and victory, rather than hopelessness and defeat. It s being aware of the supernatural BLESSING we have received from being in Him, more than being aware of the limited, natural circumstances that surround us. Once we have decided to receive God s gift of love and have chosen to make spending time in His Word a priority, so that our hearts and minds are in tune with His ways - He is completely and intricately involved in our journey through life. His BLESSING empowers us in all we do and enables us to influence the world around us with His power. That s the greatest gift we could ever dream of, a life filled and overflowing in the grace of His BLESSING! 8 grassroots THE IMPORTANCE OF CORPORATE PRAYER ANGUS BUCHAN As an evangelist, I will not attend a meeting that has not been soaked in corporate intercession and prayer. First, over many years of preaching, I realize that without prayer nothing happens. People often ask me what can they do for me, before the buildup of a big Stadium event? My first and most urgent request is We need prayer, please. Without prayer, I am wasting my time, there is no point in even going. The ceiling becomes like brass and there is absolutely no response whatsoever, but when people pray together then God commands a great blessing. (Psalm 133) The Lord had called us to hold a Sacred Assembly at the biggest stadium in Sub-Saharan Africa and issue 100,000 free tickets. Some people spoke to me about having their own prayer meetings in their respective churches all over the country and I was quite disappointed in them even asking me if it would be okay. You see, the whole point of a Sacred Assembly is to call God s people together, in one place and He will then command blessings. (Praying together) There is definitely a place for solitary prayer, but when the Lord gives a directive like we find in Joel 2:15-17 (NKJV), Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly; 16 Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room. 17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, Spare Your people, O Lord, And do not give Your heritage to reproach,. The Lord says that once we have done that then according to Joel 2:18-19 He will, be zealous for His land, and pity His people. 19 The Lord will answer and say to His people, Behold, I will send you grain and new wine and oil, and you will be satisfied by them; I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations. We need to continue to come together as a people. We need to pray for our beloved country, South Africa. God has promised us that He will hear our prayers and He will answer them.

I remember as a young believer going through a horrific drought season, just like we have been experiencing. I drove around my maize crop every day, watching it as it started to shrivel up and I cried out to God. I felt Him impressing upon me Call a prayer meeting in the Greytown town hall. I was not even a man of the cloth (a minister), but the Lord said unless you call that meeting the rain won t come. I want My people to be gathered together, in one neutral place to seek Me, to pray and to repent and I ll send the rain. (2 Chronicles 7:14) So I went to the Mayor and asked him for the town hall on a Friday lunchtime, and he gave it to me. Then I went to meet all the ministers, of course many of them were not very happy with me, because I was just a farmer. But you see I was the one that was losing my crop and not them. We called the meeting, and as it always happens, the hall was full with farmers, their wives, storekeepers and businessmen, drought affects all people. thing was that couple of weeks after we had beautiful rain, I asked the people to come together to the same town hall and give thanks to God for His goodness. Very disappointedly, not many people attended. But that happened to Jesus when He healed ten lepers - only one came back to say thank you. I pray that the Lord will give us strength to trust Him, to believe and to be obedient to His calling on our lives. James 5:16 (NKJV), The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. We came before the Lord from all different denominations, different persuasions, different areas and groups, different stations in life and we prayed sincerely. When we left, the rain came down in its abundance. However, the sad Angus Buchan presents Grassroots on FaithAfrica (DSTV341) weekdays at 13:00 and Saturdays at 07:00.

opinion A SACRIFICE OF PRAISE WALDO MALAN Reflecting on the sacrifice of Jesus is always a humbling process, and with it a great challenge in all areas of my life. As a lead worshipper I am convinced that my call is to get people into the presence of God through setting an example of living a life that is praise-filled and God-centred. Thinking about Jesus on the Cross, and thinking on the price it cost is a process that brings my calling in a sharp focus and gives direction to the choices I make in life. I would like us to briefly consider the fact that we are called to share in the life of Christ, and that sharing includes everything from good days through to suffering. Jesus warned us that if the world was going to reject Him, so too would we be rejected if we chose to carry our own cross for His sake. Peter reminds us that Jesus left us an example that we are to follow Him in all his suffering. The beauty of accepting this call to suffering is the fact that God s wisdom is foolishness to the world! Hence we are to rejoice in the suffering because it speaks of a greater hope and ultimately, addresses the issue of our faith; after all, faith is the substance of things hoped for! In worldly terms the word sacrifice conjures up pain, having to go without, denial and at best a price that is not easily afforded. In the language of faith, the word sacrifice is an honour and carries with it the hope and promise of blessing uncontained. The language of God, which is the language of love, defines the word sacrifice as the ultimate expression of love. Now, if sacrifice is the ultimate expression of love, the phrase a sacrifice of praise takes on a whole new meaning for those who follow after the example of Jesus Christ! Then through Him let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God always, that is, the fruit of the lips, confessing to His name. But do not be forgetful of doing good and sharing, for God is well pleased with such sacrifices (Hebrews 13:15-16 LITV). In light of the above definition of sacrifice, the well known scripture in the letter to the Hebrews speaks about our life as an expression of love toward God the Father. The fact that God is pleased when we act according to His nature is confirmed by the writer. We misconstrue this reference to mean that our praise of God is something difficult for us to offer, or that it implies a burden on our side to offer God our praise. On the contrary! Our sacrifice is the expression of our love to the Father through our praise. To help us in this is our constant, faithful Companion, the Holy Spirit. Look at what the prophet Isaiah has to say about the fruit of our lips: I create the fruit of the lips: peace, peace, to the ones far off and near, says Jehovah, and I will heal him (Isaiah 57:19). This is awesome! The Spirit of God gives the language of love to us so that we are able to commune with God through Jesus Christ! Peter writes that God has chosen us as His own, and that the Holy Spirit has sanctified us, so that we are able to be obedient to Jesus Christ. Jesus says that we will be known as His followers, as people who choose to live His example, by the fact that we speak a common language the language of love. So our sacrifice is indeed a celebration of love. The Divine sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is the ultimate and final expression of God s love for a world that has forgotten Him. Let you and I go out and live our lives in honour of Jesus Christ, making our daily purpose a sacrifice of praise.

enjoying everyday life YOU CAN LIVE CONFLICT-FREE JOYCE MEYER Can you think of a time when you had an ongoing issue with someone in your life? Then, just when you thought you couldn t take another minute, God asked you to hang in there one more time and not give up? Maybe you ve thought, God, I have held my tongue and kept a good attitude with this person so many times, and now You want me to play the peacemaker again? This is just too much to ask! God calls each one of us to be an instrument of His peace. Many times this means being the first to ask forgiveness or sticking with someone who has tried our patience over and over again. These situations are perfect opportunities God will use to build our character, because He can use other people to be the sandpaper that smooths down the rough edges in our personality. You re probably familiar with Matthew 18:21-22 (AMPC). Peter asked Jesus how many times he had to forgive someone who sinned against him. I m sure he thought he was being generous when he said, Up to seven times? But Jesus answered Peter by saying, Not up to seven times, but seventy times seven. You see, God is asking us to be longsuffering with the people in our lives. He wants us to go the extra mile and stay determined to do the right thing, even when other people do the wrong thing. And I have found that it s almost impossible to stay in conflict with someone if you refuse to argue! Over the years, the Lord has used my marriage to teach me important lessons in this area. I can vividly remember one occasion when my husband, Dave, and I had been arguing, and afterward, the Lord spoke to my heart and

said, I want you to go apologize and ask for his forgiveness. I said, But God, he started it! Dave should be the first one to say he s sorry! The Lord was asking me to be the peacemaker, regardless of what Dave did or didn t do. He wanted me to see how taking this action brings unity and allows Him to bring healing in our relationships. Conversely, if we always wait for the other person to apologize or be the peacemaker, we actually harm ourselves and hinder the potential for peace. The Lord instructs us to pursue peace with others and seek it eagerly (1 Peter 3:11 AMPC). It s not always easy, but as we take steps to follow God s Word in this area, it opens the door for Him to bless us in so many ways. One of my favorite examples is the story of Abraham and his nephew Lot. Genesis chapter 13 tells us how they each had a tremendous number of livestock. In fact, their possessions were so great that there wasn t enough land for both of them, and it inevitably led to strife. But look at how Abraham handled the situation: Abram said to Lot, Let there be no strife, I beg of you, between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself, I beg of you, from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right hand, then I will go to the left (Genesis 13:8-9 AMPC). Because of Abraham s willingness to keep peace in the family, the Lord blessed him abundantly. In verses 14-17, God says to Abraham: Lift up now your eyes and look from the place where you are...for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your posterity forever. And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if a man could count the dust of the earth, then could your descendants also be counted. Arise, walk through the land, the length of it and the breadth of it, for I will give it to you. I encourage you to apply this lesson to your own life. Maybe somebody s trying to stir up strife and you find yourself in a situation like Abraham s. If so, let peace begin with you, even if you know you re right. No person or relationship is perfect, and there will always be things to work through. However, when you make a firm decision to pursue peace, you can quench the spirit of strife and put a stop to conflicts before they ever really begin. And remember, even if no one else notices, God always sees. And when you choose to do what s right because it s right, He will reward you in some of the most marvelous ways. 18 motivation THESE HABITS WILL DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE YOUR LIFE TRAVIS BRADBERRY In Hans Christian Andersen s fable The Red Shoes, a young girl longs for a pair of pretty red shoes. She ultimately tricks the blind woman who cares for her into buying her a pair. Her love for the red shoes causes her to give them priority over the more important things in her life, and, as often happens in fables, karma is not on her side. The shoes become firmly stuck to her feet and force her to dance non-stop, to the point where she almost dies from exhaustion and starvation. We can scoff at the little girl s foolishness, but, in real life, we often do the same thing we chase after the things that we think will make us happy and don t realize that we re heading down a dangerous path. One study found that the people who experience the greatest job satisfaction aren t the ones in the big, fancy offices; they re the ones who approach their work as a calling, even when that work involves menial labor. Another study found that simply seeing fast-food logos makes people impatient. It s not that there s some intrinsic characteristic of fast food that makes people impatient; it s the habits we ve come to associate with fast food, such as always being on the run, eating on the go, and never slowing down enough to enjoy a healthy meal, that bring out our impatience. We have to be very careful in choosing our pursuits, because our habits make us. Cultivating the habits that follow will send you in the right direction. They ll help you to lead a more meaningful and fulfilling life, whereby you cultivate the best within yourself. Stay away from people who erode your quality of life. If merely seeing a logo for a fast-food company can make you feel impatient, just think how much more impact a toxic person can have on your life. They might be unhappy about your decision to stay away from them, and they might tell you very loudly just how unhappy they are, but isn t avoiding them worth the cumulative effects of years of their negative influence? There are always going to be toxic people who have a way of getting under your skin and staying there. Each time you find yourself thinking about a coworker or person who makes your blood boil, practice being grateful for someone else in your life instead. There are plenty of people out there who deserve your attention, and the last thing you want to do is think about the people who don t matter. No more phone, tablet, or computer in bed. This is a big one, which most people don t even realize harms their sleep and productivity. Short-wavelength blue light plays an important role in determining your mood, energy level, and sleep quality. In the morning, sunlight contains high concentrations of this blue light. When your eyes are exposed to it directly, it halts production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and makes you feel alert. In the afternoon, the sun s rays lose their blue light, which allows your body to produce melatonin and this starts making you sleepy. By the evening, your brain doesn t expect any blue light exposure and is very sensitive to it. Most of our favorite evening devices laptops, tablets, and mobile phones emit short-wavelength blue light brightly and right in your face. This exposure impairs melatonin production and interferes with your ability to fall asleep, as well as with the quality of your sleep once you do nod off. As we ve all experienced, poor nights sleep has disastrous effects.

The best thing you can do is to avoid these devices after dinner (television is OK for most people, as long as they sit far enough away from the set). Appreciate the here and now. Gratitude is fundamental to peace and happiness not wealth, glamour, adventure, or fast cars, but simple appreciation for what you have. Just because you can t afford champagne and caviar doesn t mean that you never enjoy a meal. Hot dogs and beer on the back deck with your friends taste just as good. So, don t fool yourself into thinking that you need something that you don t currently have in order to be happy, because the truth is that if you can t appreciate what you have now, you won t be able to appreciate the good life if you ever get it. Realize that things aren t always as you perceive them to be. This goes along with appreciating the here and now. That person you envy because they seem to have the perfect life might be dealing with all kinds of problems behind closed doors. That perfection could be a total mirage. Your employer s decision to move the office might seem like a huge hassle when you first hear about it, but it could end up being one of the best things that ever happens to you. You re not omniscient and you re not a fortune-teller, so be open to the possibility that life might have some surprises in store, because what you see is not always what you get. Get started, even though you might fail. Most writers spend countless hours brainstorming their characters and plots, and they even write page after page that they know they ll never include in the books. They do this because they know that ideas need time to develop. We tend to freeze up when it s time to get started because we know that our ideas aren t perfect and that what we produce might not be any good. But how can you ever produce something great if you don t get started and give your ideas time to evolve? Author Jodi Picoult summarized the importance of avoiding perfectionism perfectly: You can edit a bad page, but you can t edit a blank page. Get organized. People joke about new ideas being in short supply, but I think that the one resource that s really scarce is spare time. Do you know anybody who has some? Yet we waste so much of it by not being organized. We touch things two or three times before we do something with them (like tossing the mail down on the counter then moving it to the table so we can cook dinner) and once we ve put them away, we spend even more time looking for them. Have a place for all of those little things you need to take care of when you get a minute, whether it s your child s permission slip for a field trip or an overdue bill, and then get to them in a timely manner; otherwise you ll be searching through a huge stack of stuff for the one thing you need. Start a collection of the things that truly resonate with you. Have you ever come across a quote or a meme that so perfectly summed up your feelings that you wanted to keep it forever? You know that it s in one of those coats you wore five winters ago, and you really hope it s not the one you gave to Goodwill. When you come across something that resonates with you whether it s something that expresses who you are or who you want to be have a central place to keep those gems. It doesn t matter whether it s a spiral notebook, a leather binder, or a folder on Evernote, have a place to collect the things that matter so that you can revisit them regularly. Do something that reminds you who you are. We all joke about having me time, but what is that, really? It s making time for those activities that we feel most authentically ourselves doing, when all the masks are off and we can just be. Whether it s going for a run or dancing around with your 80s favorites blaring at top volume, make time for those moments. They re incredibly rejuvenating. Say no. Research conducted at the University of California in San Francisco shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression, all of which erode self-control. Saying no is indeed a major self-control challenge for many people. No is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield. When it s time to say no, emotionally intelligent people avoid phrases like I don t think I can or I m not certain. Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them. Just remind yourself that saying no is an act of self-control now that will increase your future self-control by preventing the negative effects of over commitment. Stick to realistic goals. How many people start January by proclaiming, I m going to lose 30 pounds by March!? Big, scary, crazy goals can be incredibly inspiring until you fall short, and then, instead of inspiration, you re left with disappointment and guilt. I m certainly not suggesting that you stop setting goals that push and challenge you, just that you try to stick within the bounds of reality. Bringing It All Together Your character is determined by your attitude and how you spend your time, and so is happiness. Stop chasing the things that you think will make you happy, and start realizing that your peace and happiness are entirely up to you. 20 faith kids Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for being so good to me and for filling my heart with Your love and peace. Thank you that I can call on Your name when I I am afraid and know that you will always help me. Help me to be a witness to my friends and to encourage them to serve you. Amen HELLO BOYS & GIRLS JARROD SAUNDERS Hello boys and girls. Jazz and I would like to wish you a happy fun filled new year. We have been back at school for a few weeks now. I must admit that I wasn t too excited to go back because the holidays was such a blast. We had a family holiday camping at the sea and spent most of our time swimming, fishing and making food and toasted marshmallows on the fire with Dad. We both passed at the end of last year and are now in new grades at school. We both have new teachers, who have been very friendly and welcoming. It s great because most of our friends have moved with us to the new grade. There are a few new children in my class who transferred from different schools. It was so sad to see a few of them crying as their parents dropped them off in the morning at school. On the first day, one of the new girls sat in the class for the entire lunch break eating her sandwich and sobbing. At first I was not sure if I should speak to her or if she would rather want to be alone. On the second day, I decided to talk to her and introduce myself. I invited her to have lunch with me and play with me outside. She was very shy but said thank you and joined me. Since that day we have spent every break time together playing. Jessica my new friend told me her family had recently moved from a different city and that all her friends were at her old school. She did not even know any kids in her new neighbourhood. She said she felt all alone and afraid on the first day and that is why she was so upset. It was at that moment that I decided to tell her about my best friend Jesus. I told her about how when you accept Jesus into your heart and become a child of God that He is always with you where ever you go and you are never alone. When you feel scared or lonely you can whisper a prayer and ask God to fill your heart with peace and joy but even better you can also ask Him to send you a friend. Nothing is too big or too small or unimportant to God. Mommy taught us this scripture when we first started school in Joshua 1:9 This is my command be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. This is such a great reminder that no matter what we face God is with us and we do not need to be afraid. I am so grateful to have Jesus in my heart and I am happy that I could tell my new friend about Jesus as well.

change revolution YOU RE A CHURCH. SO WHY AREN T YOU LIVE STREAMING? PHIL COOKE There s a persistent myth about church live streaming that needs to be put to rest: the idea that once you go live online, your members will stop coming to the services. Nothing could be further from the truth. I don t have statistics, I can only give you my experience with the hundreds of churches we ve worked with around the world. Over and over, as we help churches live stream their services, their actual Sunday attendance in the building goes up. In other words, putting your services out there online for others to see, actually draws more to the Sunday service. There are plenty of amazing live stream stories. I was speaking at a pastor s conference in Oklahoma this year and met one pastor who preaches to 700 people in his congregation. But his live stream is viewed by an average of 10,000 people each week. We worked with a large church in the Southeast who actually gets as much as one third of their total income from their live stream audience. In fact, one Sunday the pastor called me excited to share that the previous Sunday, they received more donations online than the congregation gave in the offering plate! That s unusual, but it does happen. Think for a minute about former members of your church who have moved, but would like to stay in touch. Students who have left for college, business people in the congregation who travel. Missionaries you support. I can tell you that whenever my wife and I are on the road on a Sunday morning, she always opens up the laptop and watches the live streamed service from our church. The bottom line is there are millions of people outside the walls of your church that need to hear your message. Certainly you won t reach all of them with your online service, but the fact is, if you re holding back from doing a live stream, you won t reach anyone beyond those walls. If you re a pastor or church leader interested in live streaming, ask any questions in the comment box, or contact our team. We want to see your message reach as many people as possible, and a live stream is a relatively inexpensive and effective way to make that happen.

change revolution THE NEED TO PERFORM WELL ON SOCIAL MEDIA PHIL COOKE I m not sure we re fully comprehending the need some people feel to perform well on social media. I was upgraded on a flight from Dallas to Los Angeles the other day and sat next to a twenty-something woman who literally spent the entire flight taking selfies. She must have snapped off 150 or more shots of herself. She was next to the window, so she experimented with the shade for lighting, fussed with her hair, checked different heights for the camera. Three and half hours of this. For many people of all ages, social media pressure is increasing. I would love to see pastors and Christian leaders address this at the church level. Where do we find our identity? Who are we trying to please? One interesting note we ve discovered is that the pressure to attract likes on Instagram is so great that teens often delete photos that don t do well. One survey showed some teens delete about half the photos already posted in their Instagram feeds. Everyone needs to be appreciated and supported. But when that support comes primarily from likes on social media, where is the actual physical connection, the relationship, or the real-life community? I love social media, and I have to admit to occasionally feeling frustrated when a post doesn t perform well. But as we survey social media at Cooke Pictures, we re becoming more and more distressed at just how much some people look there as their number one source of accomplishment. Right now, Snapchat appears to be gaining traction, especially among teens. Snapchat passed Instagram in an April Piper Jaffray survey of American teens. According to the semiannual survey, 28% of more than 6,530 teens polled said the disappearing photo app was their top social network, edging out Instagram with 27%. Just six months earlier, 33% of teens ranked Instagram first and 19% favored Snapchat.

change revolution WHY INTERNET PORN IS A BIGGER RISK THAN YOU THINK PHIL COOKE One of the areas where the online world continues to grow is pornography. But as younger viewers are seeing more and more explicit and violent images, new research may finally make young men re-think their habits. Today, men under the age of 40 account for 25% of all erectile dysfunction patients and the number is rising. It s becoming more and more clear that pornography is the reason. A new BBC documentary Brought Up on Porn blames Internet pornography. The film features Angela Gregory a psychosexual therapist at the Chandos Clinic at Nottingham University Hospital. Her research concludes that watching Internet porn desensitizes young men to the point that during normal sex they re unable to become stimulated. And if that s not enough, she discovered that porn viewers grow increasingly unsatisfied with what they re watching which means they must graduate to higher levels of graphic sexual violence. Talk about addiction The good news is that it can be fixed, but it takes months to recover. But the unquestionable truth is that it s time to realize the damage of pornography and shut it down.

Jim Downing reflects on his illustrious military career, including his experience during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, to show how we can be people of faith during troubled times. The natural human impulse is to run from attack. Jim Downing along with countless other soldiers and sailors at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 ran toward it, fighting to rescue his fellow navy men, to protect loved ones and civilians on the island, and to find the redemptive path forward from a devastating war. We are protected from war these days, but there was a time when war was very present in our lives, and in The Other Side of Infamy we learn from a veteran of Pearl Harbor and World War II what it means to follow Jesus into and through every danger, toil, and snare. Does God have a specific plan for your life or mine? Can we really make sense of everything that happens to us? In this bonfire of some of the most precious of all evangelical myths, Mark Woods asks whether a truly biblical faith really supports many supposed evangelical shibboleths, and thereby points us towards a faith that is deeper, more dangerous, and more fitting for adults. * SMS cost R1.50 per entry. But when Adella Atwater, the manager of her grandmother s apartment house, called and said Jillian s expenses would be paid if she d fly in for the burial, a free trip to New Orleans was too intriguing to resist. As soon as Jillian meets the odd assortment of renters and realizes that her grandmother had no idea she was coming, she hatches a plan to escape. But the investigation into her father s death quickly unfolds and Jillian is drawn into the lives of the colorful collection of saints and sinners who pass through Saint Silvanus.
