32 Personal Some Thoughts on Homosexuality Note: I self-identify as a heterosexual, white male, so I ll be the first to recognize that I m speaking from a " " position of privilege and power most folks who self-identify as homosexual will never have. Also, I offer these thoughts here as an expression of my " " interaction with the topic. Please don t construe this a " " positional paper of New Life Foursquare Church, or the larger faith community I m a part of, the Foursquare " " denomination. These are my thoughts, and mine alone. Some Introductory Thoughts on Sexuality in General First, sexuality is part of the good created order that was blessed by God. We are made in the image of God as male and female, and were blessed by God to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28, compare Genesis 9:1,7). Second, sexuality was corrupted in the Fall, and we all - to one degree or another - fall short of God s creational intent for our sexuality. This means that everyone is sexually " broken, and experience varying degrees of groaning as we await the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:22-23). Third, as Christians and members of the community of faith, we have a responsibility to honor God with our " bodies (1 Corinthians 6:20). The context there is explicitly towards the sexual sphere of our lives, and Paul s injunction is imperative for all people who serve Jesus: in light of His 1

Lordship, our whole lives (including our sexuality) is " submitted to Him. Finally, sexuality is not ultimate. That is, it is not defining of personhood (i.e.: no one is homo- or hetero-sexual, they " simply are, and behave in particular ways based on some mixture of nature and nurture.) Scripture also repeatedly " affirms the beauty and sanctity of celibacy (1 Corinthians 7:25-40). All of this is in contrast to the Western, modern " " perspective on sex, which espouses sexuality as a god, " celibacy as a fate worse than death, and sexual gratification a sacred right. Scripture acknowledges, celebrates and even encourages the expression of monogamous, heterosexual marriage, but never elevates sexuality to the position of an end-all, be-all of what it means to be human. A Brief Review of the (Very Few!) " Passages Concerning Homosexuality The first thing to mention on this front is just how little the Bible addresses homosexuality specifically. Depending on who s counting, there s between five and eight passages in the entire Bible. Compared to subjects like social justice, economic parity, treatment of orphans and widows and the like, homosexuality barely receives mention. This is "" " important to temper the current conservative Evangelical perspective which deems homosexuality THE WORST EVER!, but neither does it give credence to " " " pro-homosexuality advocates, who attempt to make an " " argument from silence, especially when Jesus teachings are in view. 2

Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19) * Ezekiel 16:49. It s less about homosexuality than you think. The " " " attempted gang-rape of the two men (angels) who arrived at Lot s house exemplifies the wickedness of the city of Sodom, but that doesn t leave us with anything to say about the Bible s position on consensual homosexual activity. " Furthermore, other Biblical passages reflecting on this event describe Sodom s sin primarily as pride, excess of food and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and " needy * - a description that could just as easily describe " certain American churches. Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 * No mention is ever made in the Old Testament regarding lesbian interactions. The only place that is mentioned in Scripture is Romans 1, to which we will turn shortly. The Old Testament Law is unequivocal in its assessment of male* homosexual acts: it is an abomination.! You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.!!!!!!!!!!! (Leviticus 18:22 ESV)! If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.!!!!!!!!! (Leviticus 20:13 ESV) These passages are unanimous in their legal prohibition of the act of male-intercourse and are the framework in which Jesus and every Law-abiding Jew perceived the issue. " However, it s not enough to close the book here, as there are numerous examples of Old Testament laws "" " (circumcision and shellfish, for example) that the New " Testament church happily considers non-binding. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1 Timothy 1:8-11 3

! Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the! kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.!! (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)! Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,!! understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice!!! homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is!! contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.!! (1 Timothy 1:8-11 ESV) Notice that homosexuality appears here in a list of many vices that Paul disapproves of in light of the Gospel and our" position as new creatures in Christ Jesus. This wasn t " " especially revolutionary in Paul s day, his audience already would have understood the moral wrongness of " " " homosexuality as a given. But notice also the wide range of other sins that get lumped together with it. Homosexuality is treated as obviously wrong, but not whose wrongness is of a completely different character and severity as liars and drunks. It s important to recognize in the Corinthians passage that Paul also acknowledges that members of that congregation had also engaged in such behavior, but have been washed...sanctified...justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:11). The rest of the passage in 1 " 4

Corinthians 6 is an exhortation to recognize the Lordship of Jesus Christ into whose family we have been redeemed, and as such, we must submit our bodies to His ethic. Romans 1:18-32 This is the most important passage on homosexuality in the Bible, and the only one where homosexuality is tied to " " explicitly theological reasons. Up to this point in chapter one Paul has greeted his audience (v.1-15) and set out his " " major rhetorical argument, namely that the gospel is the revelation of God s righteousness, and that we live by faith in that righteousness (v.16-17) Verses are a tight-knit argument that demonstrate " " human unrighteousness in light of God s righteousness. The sexual misdeeds of verses are seen as evidences of " " humanity s idolatry and the self-destructive places rebellion against God s natural order will lead:! For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all!! ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their!!! unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his!! invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For! although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images!! resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Follow Paul s argumentation here: 1) God is knowable through Creation, but, 2) Humanity failed to honor God through rebellion, therefore, 3) Their thinking became " " 5

futile and they fell into idolatry. Paul is not simply making lists of things bad people do, he s describing humanity in its fallen state. From that state, the following occurs.! Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to!! impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,!! because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed!! forever! Amen.! For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men! committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. In light of humanity s exchange of the Creator for the " created, and a rebellion against His authority, God gave up humanity to experience the full consequence of their rebellion. His wrath is surrendering them to their own free will. Homosexuality isn t the thing that s causing the wrath of God, it s the manifestation of it. Paul will go on to pile up another vice list, again as evidence of mankind s "" " distorted thinking resulting from rebellion against God.! And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful,!! inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give 6

approval to those who practice them.!!!!!! (Romans 1:18-32 ESV) Richard Hays, The Moral Vision of the New Testament: Community, Cross, New Creation. Notice that this last vice list has nothing to do with sexual sin. This means that Paul s main point isn t " " " HOMOSEXUALITY IS BAD! rather, he s using " " " homosexuality as an illustration of his main point - all " mankind is hopelessly wicked and sinful as a result of being given up to their own devices by the wrath of God. Scholar Richard Hays states, Paul is offering a diagnosis of the distorted human condition: he adduces the fact of widespread homosexual! behavior as evidence that human beings are indeed in rebellion against their Creator. The fundamental human sin is the refusal to honor God and give God thanks. * Homosexuality is a sin, but it is not an especially terrible one. Rather, homosexuality is especially emblematic of " " humanity s distortion of God s created order. At this point you might be looking at that vice list in verses and thinking to yourself, I m sure glad I m not that bad. What losers. Paul has words for you; in fact the whole passage just surveyed is, in Hays words, a sting operation. The very next words from Paul are,! Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.!!!! (Romans 2:1 ESV) Paul s statement is sweeping: the judge has no excuse, we are all guilty. This is the major point the first three chapters of Romans is leading up to, but Paul puts special emphasis on the wrongness of those who consider themselves " better than others. Again, Hays words: 7

Consequently, for Paul, self-righteous judgment of homosexuality is just as sinful as the homosexual behavior itself.... Anyone who!! presumes to have such a vantage point is living in a dangerous!! fantasy, oblivious to the gospel that levels all of us before a holy God. Romans 1 cannot be read apart from the rest of the letter, which forces all people of every sexual variation to " " recognize their need for a Savior and the free grace offered to them in Jesus Christ. The Cross defines the response: we treat one another now with sacrificial love and service, not condemnation. Implications for the Church * Quite obviously, these passages are highly contested within various Christians camps, and by no means do I presume to offer a last word on the subject. It s one thing to study Scriptures in a safe place, taking time to parse through the relevant historical, grammatical and contextual data that inform our interpretation of these " passages;* it s another thing to encounter these realities in the lives of people we love in the churches we re committed to. Again, borrowing from Hayes, let me offer some " suggestions based on a reading of these passages in light of the power of the Cross and the saving work of Jesus Christ. Can a homosexual person be a member of the church? If a drunk or a liar can, then yes. In other words: yes. If our perception of church eliminates the possibility of sinners being in attendance, then we have misunderstood both the Church and the Gospel it s founded upon. * This is obviously a very sensitive subject. Please don t construe this as a pastoral directive to vote in a particular way, only as something to inform your thinking in the democratic process. Should Christians support civil rights for homosexuals persons?* Yes. I see no basis for the church to target homosexuals as deserving of discriminatory treatment. To argue that Christians must not capitulate on God s standard of marriage is duplicitous - certainly in light of our entirely unbiblical track record in the wake of the divorce culture - 8

* Would I officiate a gay marriage? No. I agree with Hayes when he writes, The church should continue to teach as it always has that there are two possible ways for God s human sexual creatures to live well-ordered lives of faithful discipleship:!! heterosexual marriage and sexual! abstinence. * This is important to keep in mind in the discussion of But I was born this way. If we don t " " acknowledge both God s created order of our sexuality (good!) and the implications of the Fall " " (corruption and perversion in a myriad of ways) then we ll be prone to make what is what ought to be. N.T. Wright has a helpful " comment: Sexual restraint is!! mandatory for all, difficult for most, and extremely challenging for some. what s in view is governmentally-given rights and benefits afforded to human beings. On that front the Golden Rule should have sway. My stance on the issue of gay marriage is that in the eyes of God no such thing exists.* Marriage is God s intended union between one man and one woman for a lifetime. Anything else is something, but it s not marriage. However, when it comes to the governmental benefits " " afforded individuals within committed relationships in terms of taxes and a whole host of others things, it seems " disingenuous to draw a line in the sand here. Can a Christian homosexual continue in homosexual activity? No. All of us are broken, and our inclinations and proclivities in the sexual sphere require stewardship. It is no more appropriate to continue in homosexual intercourse than it would be for a heterosexual Christian to commit "" fornication, adultery, incest or bestiality. The issue isn t how much a person earnestly yearns for fulfillment in a " " particular direction* it s an issue of whether we submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. So what should a Christian with homosexual inclinations do? Practice a lifestyle of disciplined " " " abstinence. What should a heterosexual Christian do with a homosexual friend or loved one? Love. And reject the adage, Love the sinner, hate the sin. This is true on an "" impersonal level, but has the tendency to reinforces labels; for example: Here s my gay friend, John, but gosh, I sure love him! The moniker that Jesus was friends with tax " " collectors and sinners wasn t something He came up with, it was given to Him by the judgmental religious elite. To "" Jesus, the people He was eating and drinking with were friends. And in that friendship, they were healed. 9

Our mandate as Christians with all degrees of sexual " brokenness is in relating to other with all degrees of sexual brokenness is to keep Jesus front and center. The Gospel equalizes us all, and puts us all in desperate need of grace, which Jesus freely gives to all those who call upon His name and submit to His Lordship. Let those of us who call Him Lord walk in His ways and extend love, embracing the " tension of being a human in need of grace. Key Points to Remember "Sexuality is a good thing that has been broken. "Scripture is unanimous and unequivocal in its evaluation of the homosexual act as a sin; however, it never places " " homosexuality in the category of really bad sin, and " " neither should we. "Jesus offers salvation and healing for everyone who is " sexually broken (which is all of us). Reflection "What do you think about this issue? Further Reading Obviously, much of my thinking here has been influenced by (and I ve borrowed liberally from) Richard Hays The Moral Vision of the New Testament. His chapter 16 on homosexuality is especially enlightening. You ll find bloggers, pastors and Christian thinkers on all sides of this issue. I m just one voice in all this. 10
