12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 1 The Narrow Way of Salvation Luke 13:22-30 INTRODUCTION At the end of 2015 a poll by Pew Research Center found that 72% of Americans believe in heaven, but only 58% believe in hell, nearly the same percentages as their poll back in In fact, according to Cornell University s Roper Center for Public Opinion it is basically unchanged since The interesting thing is that over 90% of those believing in heaven ALSO believe they will go there. This week in our MOVE reading we learned that Jesus doesn t quite go along with the majority view. MOVE is our theme this year as we are MOVING closer to Jesus and reading through a Simplified Harmony of the Gospels to really grasp the Life and Teachings of Jesus; what He DID and what He SAID. And one thing we ve found is that His LIFE backed up His LIPS. He walked His talk; practiced what He preached. If you d like to join us just go to our website, click on the MOVE tab at the top, and it will give you all kinds of information about our reading schedule (one chapter a day), how to get the Harmony, and other resources and helps available to you, then just start where we are. We are also MOVING into our community in service and MOVING to impact our world as we study the Book of Acts in the second half of the year - and see what Jesus continued to DO and TEACH through His spiritual body, the church.

This is about three months before Jesus death in Jerusalem, well into the third year of His ministry. Let s start with verse 22: Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as He went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem. (Lk 13:22 NLT) John s gospel tells us Jesus was traveling across the Jordan River in Perea. It is only natural, since Perea had not yet been evangelized, that Jesus spend time teaching as He journeyed through its towns and villages. He always took the initiative in sharing the Gospel with people. He never waited for people to ask Him - He always took the initiative to speak for God. There s a real lesson for us in His example. He commanded US to Go - and make disciples (Mat 28:19) He expects us to take the initiative in sharing the Good News with a world so desperately in need of Good News. Luke s account of Jesus Perean ministry begins with I. A REMARKABLE QUESTION in verse 23 - Someone asked Him, Lord, will only a FEW be saved? (Lk 13:23 NLT) Why would they ask such a question? Why would they phrase it this way? Was it because, after hearing Jesus, they got the impression that there wouldn t be very many saved? Did Jesus ever imply that in His teaching? Well, as a matter of fact, He did. In spite of what those polled thought, from what Jesus said it doesn t seem that 2/3 of all Americans will be saved. Listen:

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 3 in His Sermon on Mount, He said: You can enter God s Kingdom ONLY through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the MANY who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is VERY NARROW and the road is difficult, and only a FEW ever find it. (Matt 7:13-14 NLT) In Matthew 13:19-23 Parable of the Sower only ONE out of FOUR soils was capable of producing true and lasting growth. Matthew 22:14 Many are called, but FEW are chosen. (NASB) In Luke 18:8, speaking of His second coming, He asks When the Son of Man comes will He find faith on the earth? (NASB) Jesus seems to imply the possibility that by the time He comes there will be NO ONE on earth living out the faith He came to bring. Perhaps the man who asked this question seriously wanted to know the answer - but really the answer is very evident. We only have to look around us and compare the ways of the world with the Word of God and we ll soon come to the conclusion, if we re honest, that the saved are VERY FEW. But really, the number of the saved is not our business. That is God s business. WE have a responsibility to impact and influence folks around us whenever and wherever we are but such a question as this is really none of our concern. There is much time today that is wasted in vain speculation which could be put to better use in our own spiritual growth and outreach.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 4 Many get carried away with things that are not all that important. A lady was brought to a psychiatrist by her family to see about having her committed to a mental hospital. She sat quietly in his office. When the doctor came in he said: Now, tell me just what your trouble is. Well, she began, it s just that just that I m so fond of pancakes, Doctor. Is that all? Why, I M very fond of pancakes myself. Oh Doctor, really? You MUST come over to my house! I ve got trunks and trunks FULL OF THEM. How often we spend our lives in trivial pursuits. This is one thing that very much concerns me in the modern church. Many things, such as the number of the saved, WHEN Jesus will return, who the Beast of Revelation is, the identity of the anti-christ, etc. are mere speculation which some Christians become so caught up in studying and discussing that they waste the time they could and should be spending on the sureties and certainties of our faith, like serving those in need, touching lives with Jesus love, living our faith and making disciples. Well, whether the fellow s question was legitimate or mere speculation, Jesus gives II. AN UNFORGETTABLE ANSWER

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 5 in verse 24 - Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because I tell you, many will try to enter and won t be able. (Lk 13:24 HCSB) Jesus answer tells us three things about entrance into the Kingdom of God. First A. ENTRANCE IS NOT EASY. Though salvation is free, it is NOT without its demands. Jesus says that a person must strive to enter; spare no effort. The Greek word He uses is ἀγωνίζομαι - from which we get our English word agonize. It was a word from the Greek athletic fields. When the athlete struggled and strove, exerting every last ounce of energy in conditioning and training and in competition, he was agonizing. When I was an athlete (and believe me I stress the past tense more and more every year NOW about the only thing athletic about me is my feet STILL have athlete s foot) but when I was playing ball I had certain goals I wanted to reach, so during the off-season I would spend hours playing basketball. I left for work at 8 a.m. so I would often get out on the basketball court at 6 a.m. and make sure I got in a couple hours a day. After work very often I d go out and play again before I went home to shower and clean up for the night. In college we would spend 3 hours a day, 7 days a week practicing basketball. We were to be in by 10 each night. It took us away from many ordinary activities.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 6 I never even dated until my last semester in high school - there just wasn t time. I valued my body enough that I refused to drink or smoke or stay out late - simply because of the goals I d set for myself. I spent hours upon hours running and shooting, disciplining my body, to get the awards and recognition I desired. That s the way the serious athlete STRIVES - and there s nothing wrong with that. The problem is: the Christian is not willing to spare no effort to enter the Kingdom the way the athlete is willing to strive to reach his goals. Too often the Christian is unwilling to get up early and spend an extra hour in a quiet time of study and prayer, conversing with Jesus, before he starts his day. The Christian is not willing to consistently give up his time and money in service for Christ. The Christian is not willing to inconvenience himself or go out of his way to help others. I can remember numerous times when I shoveled snow off basketball courts so I could play. The Christian often is not willing to do things like this to achieve his goal of loving, honoring, and glorifying God. The athlete does it to receive an EARTHLY, material award which will eventually perish. The Christian lives for an imperishable and eternal crown - yet it often seems the worldly are more committed to attaining theirs, than we are to attain ours.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 7 They are more in love with the things they seek than we are with JESUS. One danger that Christians often succumb to is thinking that, once we have made a commitment to Christ, we have reached the end of the road and we can, as it were, sit back as if we d achieved our goal. There is no such finality in the Christian life. Baptism is the beginning, NOT the end. The tense of the verb used in verse 23 helps us see this. The question literally asks about those who are BEING saved. Paul uses this same tense when he speaks to the Corinthian church. For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but TO US who are BEING saved, it is the power of God. (1 Cor 1:18 NASB) Salvation is a process that runs throughout our lives. We are ever BEING saved ; daily delivered by God from the power of sin. To the Christians of Philippi, Paul said: work out your salvation with fear and trembling. (Phil 2:12b NASB) Note that he DIDN T say work FOR, because salvation is a GIFT from God no amount of work can EARN it but we work out, draw out, live out - what He has done for us on the cross. That Greek phrase for work out was a mining word the treasure was there, within the earth, but it had to be drawn out by the miners. Our salvation is never what WE do on the OUTSIDE but what we DRAW from the inside God transforms us from the inside out.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 8 On the grave of an alpine guide who died in a climbing accident were recorded these words: He died climbing. So let it ever be of US. Like the athlete, we are EVER pressing on toward the goal of upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil 3:14) Are YOU striving, laboring, sparing no effort (as Peter says) to make certain about His calling and choosing you? (2 Pet 1:10 NASB) The second thing we learn is that there is B. A DEFINITE MANNER OF ENTRANCE INTO GOD S KINGDOM. Strive to enter by the narrow door. This is no different than the small gate mentioned in the Sermon on the Mount. Throughout the New Testament Scriptures, God has revealed a specific plan of salvation - and there is no other means of grace. As we go through the history book of the church (The Book of Acts), we find the very same entrance requirements repeatedly and universally applied. Acts 2 Peter preached to convince the Jews to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. As they came to believe what Peter was saying they were so convicted they asked what they should DO. Repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38 NASB) and 3000 were immersed and church God s Kingdom began. Acts 8 God sent Philip to preach to the Ethiopian Eunuch. He preached Jesus to Him from Isaiah 53.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 9 As they came to a body of water the Eunuch said: Here is water, what hinders me from being baptized? Philip: If you believe you may. Belief, Repent, Baptism Acts 9 Paul was struck down on Damascus road by a light brighter than the noon-day sun. The Lord spoke to him and brought him to faith. He was led into Damascus where he spent 3 days fasting, praying, repenting and God sent Ananias to him. What must I do? Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. (Acts 22:16 NKJV) Belief, Repent, Baptism Acts 16 Two accounts of conversion Philippian Jailer was convinced of Paul and Silas God after an earthquake released them from his prison. Asked, What can I DO to be saved? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and they took him out and baptized him even though it was one o clock in the morning. Faith, Repent, Baptism Lydia a devout Jewess whom Paul met at a prayer meeting. He taught her about Jesus and when she and others with her believed Paul s message about Jesus, they were immediately immersed into Christ. These apostolic examples go along implicitly with the last instructions of Jesus before His ascension to heaven. He commissioned them Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all I ve commanded you. (Mt 28:19 NASB)

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 10 In Mark s account he has Jesus saying: Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved. (Mk 16:15-16 NASB) God has a definite doorway and gate of entry into His kingdom. Sects and cults have tried to change it, widen it, adapt it. But Jesus says that there is no other way. He is the way. (Jn 14:6) We can require NO MORE and no less than what He taught His apostles. It is a narrow way - but it is wide enough for even the chief of sinners; wide enough for ALL who want to come in. Whosoever will may come is the message of Christ - ALL who are willing to accept HIS WAY may enter and receive the free gift of the water of life. (Rev 22:17) The third thing we learn - and sad it is - that C. FEW WILL ENTER. Jesus says, MANY, I tell you, will seek to enter and not be able. (Lk 13:24 NASB) NOT because GOD prevents them, but because they are unwilling to go through the narrow door and walk the narrow way. They are not seeking to enter by the narrow door but by a door of their own choosing or making. I heard it again the other day someone on The View or The Talk or whatever that was on our TV as I walked by said, Well, there are MANY WAYS to heaven NO! the way is NARROW.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 11 The way is Jesus. It s the easiest thing in the world to destroy oneself, and the majority of the world s people are doing just that. The broad way is the easy way. It s the path of least resistance. It s the fall line down the hill. It s the natural way a person will go if no effort is made to go another way. On the broad way everyone does their own thing and goes their own way. It is the way of license, of self-indulgence, of an undisciplined lifestyle. It s the way of conformity to the crowd, and the majority of people in this world, at your work, on your team, in your neighborhood, travel it. Being good is not enough. Living morally is not enough. If THAT would work Jesus would never have had to DIE. Even though God would have it otherwise, Jesus definitely indicates that FEW will be saved. Thus, in verses III. JESUS PREDICTS A SOLEMN DAY. First, He indicates that A. THE DAY OF GRACE WILL END. Look at verse 25 The owner of the house (Who is that? GOD) will get up and CLOSE the door. Then you will stand outside knocking and begging. You will say, 'Sir, open the door for us.' But he will answer, 'I don't know you. And I don't know where you come from.' (Lk 13:25 NIRV) Paul indicates this same thing when he says to the Athenians

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 12 God overlooked people s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but NOW He commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to Him. 31 For He has set a day for judging the world with justice by the Man He has appointed, and He proved to everyone who this is by raising Him from the dead. (Acts 17:30-31 NLT) Earlier in this chapter we read Jesus parable of the fig less fig tree. God strives with people, attempting by the influence of His Holy Spirit to convict them of their sin and by His goodness lead them to repentance. By His Word and His people, He has given His message to mankind. He sent His own Son to live and die to move us to submission to His Lordship - but if we do not bear fruit and become His disciples ONE DAY, He will SAY, as He did of the Fig Tree, Cut it down. ONE DAY, with suddenness and finality, the door will be shut and no one will be able to open it. Some day every man, woman and child on this globe will stand before God. While we STILL have time we owe it to ourselves to get ready for that day. In verses 26-27, Jesus indicates that B. MANY THINK THEY ARE READY - BUT THEY HAVE A FALSE ASSURANCE. MANY will cry: Lord, open the door for us. And He will sadly respond: I don t know you.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 13 And then, in false assurance, they will respond: We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets; and He will say, I tell you, I do not know where you are from; depart from Me, all you evildoers. (Lk 13:26-27 NASB) There are many who have not entered by the narrow door but have invented their own door of salvation. The ones He tells about here thought that an external relationship with Jesus was enough. They went and heard Him speak, they sat in His presence - but there was NO intimate relationship of submission, surrender and obedience. Jesus had NOT stolen their heart; has He stolen yours? Can YOU sing with Leeland: You ve stolen my heart, Yes, you have. You ve stolen my heart, Yes you have. You ve wiped away the stains and broke away the chains, Yes, you have. (Leeland) How many today think they are saved because they attend church - go through all the rituals been baptized, take the Lord s Supper, go to confession Others have false assurance because of some experience they ve had: vision of Jesus spoke in tongues Others have false assurance because they FEEL saved Our minds can deceive us into justifying ourselves and believing things that aren t really true at all. Still others have a false assurance based on how good they are

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 14 good neighbors, treat people right, made some behavioral changes, they help feed the homeless, shovel their neighbor s driveway on and on we could go, but as we saw from verse 24, God has a specific plan of salvation - faith that expresses itself in loving obedience to God. If a person has not submitted by faith to Christ as His Lord and Master, then no matter WHAT He thinks or feels, He is lost. Jesus said: Not everyone who SAYS to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. MANY will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles? And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness. (Matt 7:21-23 NASB) Now Jesus is NOT SAYING that you earn your way to heaven by doing the will of God; that s not what He means. He s saying that when you have faith that expresses itself in loving obedience you WILL DO the will of God, that s your goal; that s your whole life. You DON T do it to GET IN; you do it because YOU ARE IN! In verse 28 Jesus shows C. THE SORROW AND HORROR OF THE JUDGMENT. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but yourselves being cast out. (Lk 13:28 NASB)

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 15 What a horrible thing to see our loved one s entering God s eternal Kingdom on the judgment day - and ourselves cast out, never to see them again. Because of this D. JESUS URGES US TO MAKE SURE OF OUR SALVATION And they will come from east and west, and from north and south and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last. (Lk 13:29-30 NASB) On at least six different occasions Jesus made this same statement concerning the first and the last. (Mt 19:30; 20:16, Mk 9:35; 10:31) Basically He s indicating the very idea Isaiah stated: For My thoughts are NOT your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways, declares THE LORD. for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are MY ways HIGHER than your ways, and MY thoughts than your thoughts. (Isa 55:8-9 NASB) On the judgment day it is GOD S evaluation of us that really matters. What WE think, or what our FRIENDS think, isn t going to count for much. What matters is what GOD has revealed in His Word - for Jesus said: The words that I have spoken will judge them on the last day. (Jn 12:48b GWT) Paul told the Corinthians: Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! (2 Cor 13:5a NASB) And we can test ourselves - not by feeling, not by experience, not by what others think of us - but by the very standard of judgment that God will use - His revealed word. Where do YOU stand as you allow the word to be your judge?

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 16 Are you striving to enter by the narrow gate? Are you walking the straight and narrow way? Is your assurance based on the living and abiding word of God - or on something less? If we ve truly experienced the power of the Holy Spirit and the joy of salvation, it will be evident in our lives - we ll see the fruit. It s true that FEW will be saved - but they can t blame GOD. The Bible speaks clearly: God doesn t want to destroy ANYONE but wants all people to have an opportunity to turn to Him and change the way they think and act. (1 Pet 3:9 GWT) He wants everyone to BE SAVED and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Tim 2:4 HCSB, GNT) Every person in this room (in the world) has the ability by God s Spirit to enter by the narrow gate - if they don t, they can blame ONLY themselves. It seems to me there are three next steps that we can take based on what Jesus has taught here: You can enter by narrow door today. You can confess your faith in Jesus and be baptized into Him, giving your life to Him, surrendering your heart to Him and begin walking with Him down that narrow path to life, letting Him set you free to enjoy the glorious liberty of the children of God. We want to give you an opportunity to do that in just a few moments, but let s look at 2 more steps.

12-NarrowWayOfSalvation-Lk13v22-30.doc April 1-2, 2017 ( =3846 words) Gene Barron / Valley View Christian Church 17 You examine yourself and perhaps see that you ve NOT been living a life of faith that expresses itself in loving obedience to God. You ve had a false assurance based not on a relationship with Jesus but on your own performance, on how good you are, or on what good you do and you need to just focus on building a love relationship with Him that becomes the motivation for your entire life. You can continue to strive, to press on, to walk with Jesus every moment of every day, allowing Him to lead and guide you as you spare no effort to be found in Him, not having a righteousness of your own but that which comes through the transformational relationship you have with Him. INVITATION
