9 On the day of Pentecost, the promised Spirit was poured out with a sound like a mighty rushing wind that filled the house where the disciples had come together for prayer (Acts 2:2). Tongues of fire appeared on their heads and the Spirit filled them and enabled them to speak in other tongues. The gathering crowd in Jerusalem listened in astonishment as the disciples spoke to them in many languages about the mighty works of God (Acts 2:11). Peter preached a sermon that day, proclaiming the crucified and risen Jesus as both Lord and Christ. Peter called on the people to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:36-38). Jesus had said of the promised Spirit, He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you (John 16:14). On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit glorified the Son of God. The crucified, risen and ascended Savior was proclaimed as Lord and Messiah. Peter told the crowd that day, The promise is for you and for your children everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself (Acts 2:39). Nicodemus had once wondered, How can a man be born when he is old? On the day of Pentecost 3000 people, both young and old, were born again of water and the Spirit. At creation the wind of the Spirit moved over the waters (Genesis 1:2). Today the wind of the Spirit still moves in the waters of Baptism, as new sons and daughters both young and old are born again and brought into the kingdom of God. In the preaching of the Word, in your day to day witness to Gospel, the Spirit continues to move through the world, glorifying the crucified and risen Lord Jesus, and bringing young and old to the new birth of Baptism.
