1 Haymarket Herald October 2016 GET ON YOUR KNEES Our Wednesday night church activities are one of the highlights of my week. Dr. Stewart used to say the same thing when he was here. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., we have a delicious dinner together, prepared by John Hessenauer and his dedicated team of volunteers. (thankfully I have never been asked to do the cooking because as you all know, I do not cook.) Linda Rhodes then leads our Mission Possible Kids group upstairs to enjoy more fellowship and mission projects. Our newly formed Youth Bible Study follows suit into the youth room, where Vicki Bayol facilitates a teenage view of the scriptures. The remainder of the fun crew head into the sanctuary. Here we all reconnect both spiritually and prayerfully, during our intercessory prayer time and Bible study. The first thing we do, after giving Marvin grief (just because it s fun) or calling out Cheryl for being late (she s typically in the kitchen) or watching someone sit in Lilly s seat and then having them move when she comes in (because we are routine here you know), is to rejoice for the blessing of solid Christian fellowship. Initially we pray to thank God for allowing us the time to be together midweek and we invite God to come into Inside This Issue: Desk of Rev. As we voice our concerns, some of us pray out loud and others pray silently. While there is nothing theologically wrong with that, the idea of prayer has prompted this article for this month. How do you talk to God? Few things in the spiritual realm are more confounding than prayer. After all, if God already knows everything and if He already has an active plan for everyone what can we hope to accomplish by talking to Him? Obviously there are complicated theological answers to those questions. But what we basically need to know is that the Bible puts a lot of stock in prayer. Just read these words from the apostle James: If you are having trouble, you should pray. And if you are feeling good, you should sing praises. If you are sick, ask the church leaders to come and pray for you. Ask them to put olive oil on you in the name of the Lord. If you have faith when you 1

2 pray for sick people, they will get well. The Lord will heal them, and if they have sinned, he will forgive them. If you have sinned, you should tell each other what you have done. Then you can pray for one another and be healed. The prayer of an innocent person is powerful, and it can help a lot. Elijah was just as human as we are, and for three and a half years his prayers kept the rain from falling. But when he did pray for rain, it fell from the skies and made the crops grow. James 5:13-18 (CEV) If we acknowledge that prayer is important, our next step is to figure out how to pray, that is, what to say to God. One of the most popular prayer models is called ACTS, an acronym for four key elements of prayer: A Adoration: The best way to start any prayer is by telling God how awesome He is. The more specific you are in your praise and the more time you spend in adoration, the better your experience will be. C Confession: The things we do wrong get in the way of our relationship with God. To make things right, we need to confess them and ask for his forgiveness. T Thanksgiving: It is one thing to be thankful for the countless things God does for us; it is quite another to tell Him, in detail, just how thankful we are. S Supplication: After we have told God that we recognize how incredible He is, asked for His forgiveness, and thanked Him, we can talk to Him about our requests. View this article as an official invitation to join our growing Wednesday night crew. We would love to have you join us during this special time of Christian fellowship, friendship and love. Bring your prayer requests and also your thanksgivings. God hears every single one and so will your church family. We are certain God will hear our prayers when we ask for what pleases Him. And if we know God listens when we pray, we are sure our prayers have already been answered. 1 John 5:14-15 (CEV) Rev. Ruth Anne Sawyer EMOTIONAL HEALING Save me, O God, for the floodwaters are up to my neck. Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can t find a foothold. I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me. I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me. Let all who seek God s help be encouraged. For the LORD hears the cries of the needy. Psalms 69: 1-3, (NLT) We all go through struggles and hard times. Life is not fair. There are times of sadness, despair and regret. The Psalmist paints a picture of someone trapped in an emotional downward spiral. Everything seems overwhelming and yet in the end they were able to say that there is encouragement in seeking God s help. Why? Because God hears us. In the book, Living from the Heart Jesus Gave You, the authors, E. James Wilder and James G. Friesen, talk of two types of trauma that bring the kind of despair that we read in today s passage. There is the trauma of not getting what we need and then there is the trauma of getting something that we should have never received. The first is the result of neglect and abandonment, the second from abuse. But the good news is that God hears us in our despair and He can help us. The authors write, Life brings each of us inescapable traumas that block maturity. God s redemptive activity comes to us in two ways: He brings healing to our traumas, and adopts us into His family. Both ways boost us through our blocks to maturity, along the way to wholeness, With these boosts, we will be able to live from the hearts He gave us, our true identities will emerge, and our relationships with family and community will be characterized by joy. Today, praise God for His healing. It is there for you as you bring your pain to Him. Also, praise God for His family. It is through the fellowship and love from each other that we are made whole and can experience the joy He has for us. 2

3 Prayer: Father, thank You for hearing my cries. Thank You for Your desire to heal me from my traumas. Thank You for making me part of Your family where I can experience the love and fellowship that will bring me into maturity. I commit myself to You for my complete healing. In Jesus name, Amen. J.T. Frazier Deacon of the Month The deadline for submitting surveys regarding the church's search for a senior pastor was September 30. We appreciate the responses received! The Pastor Search Committee will meet in early October to review all inputs. Everyone is cordially invited to a churchwide meeting immediately following worship on Sunday, October 16. At that time the PSC will review its findings from the survey. A potluck luncheon will be served and child care and children's activities will be provided during the discussion. We are continuing a special time of devotion and prayer for a new pastor on Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the sanctuary and encourage the participation of all. Please keep our church and the committee in your daily prayers as we endeavor to discern God s will for our future. Paul Sellers Pastor Search Committee Member We have had two very successful weeks of transitioning the former Sunday school hour for children from 9:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. with dismissal after the children's sermon presented during worship. Our teachers for the first eight week rotation are Brenda Sellers (pre-k), Linda McMillan (K-2nd grade), and Linda Rhodes (3rd-5th grade). Please prayerfully consider being a teacher. The next eight-week rotation begins November 6. Children's Fellowship time now starts at 9:45 a.m. and includes music, memory verses, learning the books of the Bible, a Bible story and fun activities. Bible study time is very important for children to form a firm foundation in their faith. We look forward to continuing to minister to our children through the presentation of Biblical truths. Brenda Knighton STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE The deadline for submitting your budget requests for 2017 are due to the Stewardship Committee by October 1. Request forms are available at the sanctuary entrances as well as by the copier. Please submit your forms in person to Brad Young, Patrick Moore, John Burke or Jana Gough. Alternatively, you may place them in the Stewardship Committee box next to the copier. Brad Young 3

The meeting is in preparation for the October business meeting, to be held on Wednesday evening, October 26, at 7:00 p.m., in the fellowship hall. All church members are encouraged to be present for this quarterly meeting. SIGHT & SOUND THEATER The December 3 trip to see Samson at the Sight and Sound Theater is filling up quickly with the deadline for sign-up on October 15. More than half of the seats available for this excursion have been reserved with only twenty one seats remaining. Please see Patrick or Regina Moore or contact them at ginaandpat@msn.com or to reserve your seats before the trip is fully booked. The plan is for a bus to depart from the church at 6:00 a.m., Saturday, December 3, bound for Lancaster, PA. We will take a break for breakfast at each individual s expense around 8:00 a.m. We will arrive at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., just in time for the 11:00 a.m. show. Afterwards, we will enjoy an Amish style meal at Hershey Farms and depart from there no later than 4:00 p.m. for the return to Haymarket. We'll stop once, about halfway so we can stretch and buy dinner on our own if necessary. God willing, we'll all be back between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. after a full day of fellowship and entertainment. Devices for the hearing impaired are available and must be reserved in advance. Bus fare, show tickets, and the meal at Hershey Farms are $125 for ages 13 and up and $72 for children under 13. This is a great opportunity to invite others to come on a fun adventure and to share with our friends and family the special bonds that we have with one another at Haymarket Baptist Church. We look forward to you joining us! Patrick Moore 4

5 18 24 COLLEGE-AGE MINISTRY 1824, our new college-age ministry, is specifically designed for young adults between the ages of 18 and 24. Whether you have just graduated from high school, are a seasoned college student, or live and work in the area, we want to include you in this special outreach ministry! At Haymarket Baptist Church, we recognize the need for young adults at this important stage in life to have continued spiritual encouragement and fellowship. If you have a college-age student that you wish to add to our program, please call the church office at Each week they will receive a weekly worship bulletin from our Sunday service, monthly a church newsletter, a virtual devotional or message, and will be contacted regularly ( /text/phone) by an appointed representative from our church. Jackie Cafferty has prayerfully agreed to head up this important ministry and we are so thankful for this role that God has equipped her for. She may be reached at jgcafferty@comcast.net. For our young adults at college, the month of October brings fall break, mid-term exams, registration for the 2017 spring semester, and many other important decisions as the holidays approach. Keep our list growing, and keep these special church members and friends in your prayers. THE BLESSINGS CORNER I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. Psalm 34:1 I n our great hall area we have set up a place where church members and friends can share with those in the church family how God has blessed them. There, you will find a table with pens, note cards and a collection box for people to write down their blessings for dissemination through the church newsletter. Here are some of the comments collected in September: I am continually blessed by Dr. Olson on Sundays. He seems like a pastor as well as a preacher. I am thrilled by the beautiful kids who attend Children s Church each Sunday morning. 6 PRESCHOOL NEWS Dear Church Family, We are off to a fabulous start! September was filled with the beginning of new friendships, sunny days, introductions to everything school related...and very busy days of fun and learning! We completed our first fundraiser with the Attraction Dining Guide coupon book. We did lots of training for HBCPK parents: how to be a room mom, how to be a substitute, how to work in the library and how to be a volunteer! We, of course did lots of training for children. Our big rule at school is to Obey the first time you are told. This is how we keep the children safe, and how we show respect for our teachers and parents. Did you know that God tells children to obey eight different times in the Bible? We also learned about the word honor: 1. Treat other people as special 2. Do more than what's expected of you 3. Have a good attitude towards others This month we learned about our community helper, the police officer. The police officer is someone we all must obey. Our visiting police officers are the fathers of some of our students, so it is very special to us all that they come to share with us about their job. This year we were treated to real police helicopters, sitting behind the wheel of a police car, and hearing the police car sirens. It's so much fun being a kid! This month we had school pictures taken, we learned the story of creation, and we memorized our first Bible verses. We played, painted, sang, were read to, colored, went to music class, exercise class, and we had fun snacks. We also had a great time at the Haymarket Day Parade! Our next fundraiser is called Great American. It offers gift wrap, jewelry, candies, nuts, and kitchen items. I will leave a copy of the book on the table just outside the church office if anyone wants to look through it. We'd love the support of our program and fundraising so that we can purchase safer exterior doors for our students. The doors will cost $32,000. We have had several parents make small donations, and we are doing three fundraisers, but we are still not sure that we will raise all the money we need. We may have to fundraise for a few years for these special exterior doors. Our final fundraiser for the year is Claire s Gourmet Foods. It offers frozen items such as pizza, lasagna, cheesecake, pretzel dogs, lemon pound cake, etc. Our Holiday Bazaar will take place on December 1and 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 1. Be sure to come by and get an early start on Christmas shopping! All proceeds will go towards funding the new doors. October brings us fall and visits from the fire department, our Back to School Night/Book Fair, Chick-fil-A spirit night, and the Harvest Hoedown. The Chick-fil-A spirit night is October 12, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The money we raise at Chick-fil-A usually works out to be about $300 and will go directly to our sister school in Jamaica, Cornwall Mountain Basic School. The teacher there, Ms. Sheryl Gardner, has started taking night classes at Sam Sharpe Teacher's College in Montego Bay, where anonymous gifts from our school have funded her first semester and sent her a backpack full of school supplies. Tune in to WGTS 91.9, a Christian contemporary radio station, where our school is proud to take part in honoring a service man or woman. You will hear our kindergarten classes recite the Pledge of Allegiance each morning at 7:15 a.m. on October 3-7. Then on October 10-14, you will hear the morning four s classes. Great job kids! We are richly blessed at HBCPK, and we enjoy serving in the ministry of this church by loving and teaching His little ones during this weekday ministry. Have a wonderful fall! Mrs. Laurie Frasz Director, Haymarket Baptist Church Preschool & Kindergarten 6

7 . WOMEN S FALL BIBLE STUDY C ome and join the women of our church for a Bible study on Jeff Iorg s book, More Than Enough, The study will take place each Monday, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. We will begin October 3, and it will be a weekly study on the "I AM" sayings of Christ in the Gospel of John. The "I AM" is more than enough to meet our needs in life. Christ meets our needs for contentment, direction, protection, hope, peace and purpose. Come and join us on Monday morning to study God's word together. We look forward to seeing you there beginning Monday, October 3. No need to register for the class, just come! Happy Fall Y all! We re excited about the upcoming events for our youth group through the fall and holiday season and we are certainly open to suggestions for events and welcome chaperones or hosts at any time.. We ve chosen our theme for the year to be God Use Me GUM. (Perhaps you parents noticed the packets of gum they brought home from Ignite a week or so ago.) We re studying examples of how God uses ordinary, everyday people for His purposes to bring glory to His kingdom. We have studied how God used people on September 11, 2001, despite the horrific tragedy of that day and how God used young people in the Bible. We ve challenged the youth to think of how God can use them (and us) during this year in our everyday lives. Lisa Morgan Youth Committee OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD OCC, also known as the shoebox event, is just around the corner. Boxes will be available for pick-up on Sunday, October 16, after worship. Please consider taking one or more to help spread the word of God to children around the world. Each box will contain a pamphlet to give you guidelines on filling it as well as a label to identify the box for a boy or girl and the age group. Then, bring your box back any time before Sunday, November 15. This simple project brings so much joy to children around the world and helps spread the word of God. Please consider filling a box or two. Debbie Nelson, Missions Committee 7

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the program or is interested in helping should plan to attend an informational meeting on Sunday, October 2, immediately following worship. We had ten families from our community register for Awanas on Haymarket Day. We also have at between children from our congregation and Preschool/Kindergarten who are excited about this program.
