4 Service of the Longest Night Friday, December 22, :00 p.m. Refreshments to follow For many the seasons of Advent and Christmas are often filled with expressions of joy, excitement, and happiness. It s a time for family to gather and for churches to worship pointing to the hope that is found in the coming of the Christ child. However, this time of joy and expectation can often overshadow the pain and hurt many experience during this season, when the world's merriment puts their grief and sorrow in stark relief. The Service of the Longest Night is scheduled around the winter solstice (the longest night of the calendar year). We will light candles on the Advent Wreath, sing Advent hymns, pray together, and celebrate Holy Communion. We will take time from the hustle and bustle of other Christmas rituals, parties, and obligations to offer a witness to those who are struggling in our community. It s a witness to them that the Christ child comes as a sign of hope in the face of despair. And it s a witness that this church is intentional about upholding members of the community in whatever season of life they may find themselves in. Whether you have said goodbye to a loved one this year or ten years ago, experienced divorce, miscarriage, empty nest, addiction, this service is appropriate for you! Perhaps you are not currently grieving, but you are willing to worship and pray in solidarity for those who do. This service is for you! Christmas Eve Worship Sunday 12/24 at 7:00pm Traditional Christmas Eve Service! Christmas Eve Candlelight Service with Communion It s a Wonderful Life Treasure It Sympathy Our sympathies are extended to Judy, Jason, and Jonathan Smalley, Bill Kast and the entire Smalley family upon the death of David Smalley on November 21 st. David s beautiful voice and wonderful character will be greatly missed here at Hilton UMC. Baptism We Rejoice in the baptism of Phillip John Lonville during Worship on November 12 th. We pray God s blessing on him and his parents Mike & Valerie (Hare) Lonville. 4

5 CHUMS The Christian Hilton United Methodist Seniors leadership is retiring. This group of about 20 needs new leaders who are younger than 70 years old. Will you consider helping this important group in our church starting in January? They meet the third Monday of each month at noon for lunch and a program. A donation at the dinner is taken to pay for the food and speaker. (About $5 per person) The position requires a team of about 4/5 people that will work together. Director, chef, and 2/3 helpers. 1. A Cook/Chef: a. She/he will plan the meal, purchase the ingredients and then prepare it. b. She/he is then reimbursed for the purchases. c. Helpers may be called upon to assist the chef getting dishes out, plating the meal. 2. A Program Director: a. Someone to organize a speaker or program and help with the setting up that day. b. Announce who the speaker/ program is to the callers, so they can inform the CHUMS members as calls are made. c. Greet the speaker. The guest speaker's lunch is provided by the CHUMS d. Decide if the weather is suitable for driving during bad weather. Let the callers know so they can then contact those who were planning on coming of the cancellation. 3. Callers/helpers: a. 2/3 people to call and remind the group of the meeting and ask who is planning on attending so the cook knows how many to prepare for. b. Come in earlier and set the tables c. Start the coffee pot, fill the water pitchers d. Be the waiters/waitress to serve the food from the kitchen may have to help plate the meal to be served. e. Help clean up after the lunch both the dining room and the kitchen. Other responsibilities: a. Take a meal to any senior shut-ins b. Buy special supplies they will need special napkins, and/or treat In the past the retiring group has a. May: provided a birthday cake to celebrate everyone's birthday b. June: Picnic Meat& rolls are furnished, everyone else bring a dish to pass c. Christmas: the director and friends have purchased a small gift for the group attending. Everyone buys a gift to exchange and brings an appetizer (no charge in Dec.) We have a youth group for the very young in our church. CHUMS is the "youth group" for the young at heart. I am asking several of our church family to step forward to support this special group by volunteering a few hours each month. Interested? Have a question? Please call or contact Karen Swanson or Carol Bell (retiring leaders). Our thanks to Karen Swanson, Carol Bell, Sparky Hess and Carol Weaver for providing the leadership for CHUMS. Your dedication to this group is greatly appreciated. 5

9 The 12 Days of Christmas On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me. This song is sung every year and I have always wondered what it was all about. I found this interpretation that spoke of a time when people could not read and it was dangerous to talk about Christianity and the Church was concerned people would not remember the basics of Christian doctrine. So this song in code was created to encourage people to remember and share their faith by singing. Enjoy a reminder of what we believe True Love God Me Baptized Christian Partridge in a Pear Tree Jesus (A partridge acts as a decoy to save her babies) Two Turtle Doves Old and New Testament (Witness to God) Three French Hens Faith, Hope, Love (1 Corinthians 13:13) Four Calling Birds Four Gospels (Mathew, Mark, Luke, John) Five Gold Rings Torah (first five books of the Old Testament) Six Geese A-laying Six Day of God s Creation (Genesis1) Seven Swans A-Swimming Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Cor 12:8-11) Eight Maids A-Milking Eight Beatitudes ( Matthew 5:3-10) Nine Ladies Dancing Nine Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) Ten Lords A-Leading Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-7) Eleven Pipers Piping Eleven faithful Apostles (minus Judas Iscariot) Twelve Drummers Drumming Twelve Points in the Apostle s Creed Did you know there is United Methodist News Service available to you? The United Methodist News Service was established several decades ago. Without a news service, our leaders realized, the public media, special-interest groups and others would shape the story. Or the story would not be told at all, said Tim Tanton who now directs UMNS. UMNS is committed to helping people better understand the church, its workings, beliefs and history.
