4 St. Peter Parish Cambridge, MA From the Director of Faith Formation Last Sunday we welcomed back scores of families to our religious education program for grades kindergarten to 5. And we were delighted to welcome a dozen new families. This Sunday we will have the first gathering, with candidates and parents, of our Confirmation preparation program. Soon we ll begin our Middle School program. Our fundamental goal with these programs is for students to experience our Catholic faith, beliefs, and culture with adults who share their own experiences and knowledge. This is the way our faith has been passed on since the beginning. We can provide information from books, Scripture, and Church teachings, but faith is modeled by people who live it. In that sense, we are all evangelists to one another, and especially to our younger parishioners, who hear what we say and, more importantly, watch what we do. We can all grow, and should grow, in knowledge of our faith, in trying to understand what it means to us individually, and in hoping it strengthens our relationship with the Lord. For these reasons we are offering many opportunities for learning, praying, and conversing. You can read about several in this bulletin. We offer them in what we hope are convenient times, such as immediately following Mass. For example, next Sunday, the 15th, Dr. Bede Bidlack will present a one-hour discussion of the famous Jesuit and theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Join us at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, come downstairs afterward, get some coffee and a muffin, and walk into one of the side rooms for this fascinating presentation. How easy is that? Try it! They will share antitrafficking initiatives in the U.S. and Massachusetts - what has changed and what they see in the future. They will offer practical actions that individuals and groups can take to help eradicate trafficking. Women in the Old Testament Wednesdays 7-8:30 p.m. Beginning October 4 Join us as we study Women in the Old Testament. No previous scripture study experience is needed all are truly welcome. We use the Little Rock Scripture Study program (a reader and a study guide) and a Bible. There is a reading assignment and reflection questions each week. We discuss the Scripture and the discussion questions. We meet on Wednesdays, 7-8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center, on October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 8, 15, 29 and December 6, 13 and 20. 5 October 1, 2017 Learn About Women in the Bible 5 Sundays Beginning October 22 10: a.m., Parish Center In this workshop, open to ALL, we will look at the lives and stories around some of the notable women of the Bible. Each session will comprise a short lecture, followed by a discussion. No prior knowledge of the topic is necessary. Just bring your curious minds, as the more we learn about these eternal characters, the more we know about our present selves, regardless of gender. There is a meaningful sequence to the workshop material but as we are going to study different notable women every week, you are welcome to join us for as many sessions and whenever you can. James Keenan, SJ - Lecture Sunday, October 29, 6:15 p.m., Parish Center What Do Contemporary Catholic Theological Ethics Have to Say About Today's World? St. Peter s is delighted to welcome our friend of many years and longstanding celebrant at the 5:00 p.m. Mass, Fr. Jim Keenan, for our Fall Lecture. He is the Canisius Professor in the Theology Department and Director of the Jesuit Institute at Boston College. The author of many books and articles on theological ethics, Fr. Keenan lectures around the world on both historical and contemporary issues in ethics. Please join us in the Parish Center following the 5:00 p.m. Mass. A reception will follow. 5 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint of the Cosmos: Life and Legacy of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin Sunday, October 15, 10:15 a.m., Parish Center Before the Bible, before Jesus, the cosmos was God s way of revealing Godself to humanity. Such was the vision of Jesuit, scientist and theologian, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin ( ). Come and learn not only who Teilhard was, but more importantly his way of seeing the world as an ongoing process of divine Love. Presented by Bede Bidlack, PhD, Associate Professor of Theology at St. Anselm College. Teilhard was a force for Christianity not seen since Saint Paul. (Fr. Thomas Berry) New Testament Greek Reading Course: Gospel of Mark 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the Month 7-8:00 p.m. October 3 - December 19 Michael O Brien and Deacon Tim O Donnell will offer a course in readings from Mark s Gospel. Experience this vivid and compelling Gospel in its original language! We will provide for some Greek language review while focusing on reading and translation of the text. Participants should have completed a year of either New Testament or Classical Greek. There is no charge, and texts/learning materials will be distributed or are available online.
