Hilton United Methodist Church February 2015 Pastor Jennifer Disappears February 2! (only temporarily!) The Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), and our District Superintendent, have approved a 4 week leave of absence for Pastor Jennifer from Monday, February 2 through and including Sunday, March 1. The United Methodist Discipline allows such a leave of absence once every four years for spiritual renewal and study. The SPRC expects each member of the congregation to respect the intent of this leave of absence, and refrain from placing ANY demands upon her time during this period. Please note well the emphasis. One of the Hand to Plow recommendations approved in April 2014 requires Pastor Jennifer to develop a path to congregational leadership, and a curriculum for 8 monthly leadership classes. She will spend 2 weeks of her leave of absence completing this curriculum. The remaining 2 weeks will be spent in spiritual renewal with her husband. Throughout the month she will be worshipping with different congregations to research different worship styles. Pastoral coverage for spiritual comfort will be provided by Rev. Kurt Traugott of the Parma Greece United Church of Christ. Some of you may know Pastor Kurt from his involvement in the Hilton-Parma Clergy Group, or from one of the many times he has provided coverage before. Pastor Jennifer has made sure that we will be in good hands. If any of our congregation has a need for pastoral care, contact will start the same way as we do now: during business hours (M-F 9am-12pm), call the HUMC Office: If there is no answer, leave a message, and give Office Manager, Pat VanVleck, about an hour to get back with you. If you don t hear from Pat, and during non-business hours call Pat on her cell phone: Unable to reach Pat? Call Bob Comstock, our Certified Lay Minister, at: Home Phone: Cell Phone: Church services will be held as we normally do: 10:00 AM each Sunday, in the sanctuary at 21 West Avenue, Hilton. There will be communion on Sunday, March 1. There will be an Ash Wednesday service here on February 18 th at 7:00pm. Preaching schedule during this time: February 8 th Rev. Sherri Schaus Why church? 2 Lent at Hilton United Methodist Church Lent is the period of 40 days (excluding Sundays) from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and has now become a time of penance by all Christians. Hilton United Methodist will be engaging in a Lenten study in worship called Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations. These practices are Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development, Risk-taking mission and service, and Extravagant generosity. These Five Practices capture the core ministries in our congregations. The words help us understand our purpose and mission as disciples of Christ in the world. Individually or with other households in your congregation, journey through five weeks of prayer and practice. Through daily devotions, Scripture readings, prayer, introspection, and challenge, rediscover your role and purpose as you deepen the practices that help you follow Christ. The collection of writings for daily devotion and prayer is taken from the book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations. We are also challenging each household to a devotional life using the book, Cultivating Fruitfulness, throughout the Lenten season. It is our goal that everyone be of one mind as we journey through the Lenten season exploring these topics. You may pick up your devotional starting February 8 th in worship. Day one of the devotional will begin on Sunday February 15 th to prepare for worship on the First Sunday of Lent on Sunday February 22 nd. 3 Pastor s Corner: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world Mission of Hilton United Methodist Church In April 2014, when we adopted the Consultation Report for the Hand to Plow Process, we also adopted a new mission for the people called United Methodist in Hilton, N.Y. The mission of Hilton United Methodist Church is To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. This is also the mission statement for the entire United Methodist global denomination. This statement can be read on many church publications, the screens in worship, our website, and even is mentioned in a message or two (maybe a whole lot more) in worship. As followers of Jesus Christ, each of us is given the commission to make disciples for Jesus Christ. As a disciple, we are committed to learning, studying, and following Jesus in our everyday lives. I honestly am not sure that we are the ones who make disciples, or if we are the seed planters from which God is able to open hearts and invite others to make the decision of discipleship. What I am sure of is that if I do not show the world that I am a disciple; if I do not tell my story of how my life is effected by being in a relationship with Jesus Christ; if I do not listen to others stories and find entry points to invite others to become a disciples; disciples will not be made. God needs YOU and ME in order to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Each of us is responsible for the invitation. Throughout the month of January and February we have been studying how as Christians we can engage in Faith Sharing. In preparation for the sermon series I read a book called, Get Their Name: Grow Your church by Building New Relationships by Bob Farr, Doug Anderson and Kay Kotan. The book is about relationships. I have always felt that the key to inviting others into a relationship with Jesus Christ and a life of discipleship has EVERYTHING to do with relationships. I believe that God can use evangelism tools such as cold calling people and inviting them to Jesus. However, I also believe that the MOST effective way of inviting others to discipleship is through relationship. The authors give several steps to help aid in this process. Some of these ideas will be used in worship in February. Step One: Listen for their story ~ Feel free to ask good open ended questions of those you are talking to. Demonstrate authentic interest in the other person. Resist the urge to talk about you and your story. Find ways in THEIR story that you can connect with them. Step Two: Watch for Signals ~ As the other person becomes curious about you, watch for opportunities to share your faith in relevant ways. This may lead to asking the person if they have a church home. If not, you have been given the opportunity to invite the person to your church home. If the answer is yes, then you now have something in common with the person to talk about and deepen your own relationship with the person and your own relationship with God. It takes bravery to tell someone our own story. In doing so, we also become vulnerable. Remember, we are building a relationship, not an encounter. (p. 58) Continued.. 3

Pastor s Corner Continued.. Step Three: Know Your Story ~ This step is exploring how God s story is a vital part of our stories. We need to know our own faith story in order to be comfortable in sharing it with others. This involves having answers to Three Questions: Why God? ~ Why do you believe in God? How has God made a difference in your life? Why Church? ~ O.K., you believe in God, but why bother with the church? Why My Church? ~ We have all heard the statement, I can be a good Christian without attending a church. Why do you choose to attend and even be active in Hilton United Methodist Church? Step Four: Knowing Your Faith Story ~ Each of us have a personal faith story. Our faith story allows us to share about those people dear to us who helped to make God real in our lives. The narrative of our faith story helps us to share the moments in our lives when we have had a personal encounter with God. Step Five: Find the Need and Connect New People with New People ~ This process involves building real, authentic relationships. As we strive to assist God in the making of disciples, we are NOT about connecting people to Christ and then leaving them out in the cold. We have all met people who remind us of others in our lives or we think would like to get to know others in our lives. Whether those people be our dear friends or our acquaintances we are charged to help connect them to have relationships with other people in our congregation, not just ourselves. Everyone is fighting loneliness and isolation. Perhaps a connection God leads you to make can help someone to actually meet Jesus in the flesh. In February, worship will center around helping each of us to answer the questions: Why God? (Pastor Jennifer) Why Church? (Rev. Sherri Schaus) Why my Church? (Bob Comstock and some of you...) I pray that you will make worship a priority in order to listen to these different faith stories and different perspectives. I pray that they will enrich your own faith story as we continue to Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. See you in Worship, Pastor Jennifer Small Group Update The Church Council on Thursday January 22, 2015 approved the Small Group Ministries Report and Recommendation. The consultation report directed their work as follows: to explore options for small group systems. After exploring options for small group opportunities for Hilton UMC, the team will make a recommendation to the Church Council. After the approval of the Church Council, the small group system will be implemented on or before February 1, 2015 and evaluated no later than July 1, We are a month late, but excited at where God is leading this ministry. The Small Group Ministries Team has been meeting since October of They did extensive research regarding Small Group Ministries in various churches in the Rochester area. The full details of the report are attached. In essence Hilton United Methodist Church will begin an official Small Group Ministry in March If you are interested in becoming a small group leader, please contact Harriet Zunno or Jim Lee. They will then direct you to the training dates and expectations. Please take time to read carefully the Small Group Ministry Report and also feel free to ask questions at the Town Hall Meeting Sunday February 8, 2015 immediately following worship. 4 See attached

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE Wednesday, February 18, 2015 ~ 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During our Ash Wednesday service, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers. Our Ash Wednesday service also includes communion. The Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday or the custom of Lent, however, the practice of repentance and mourning in ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew 11:21. The 40 days of Lent are symbolic of Jesus time in the wilderness before he began his ministry. During that time, he was tempted; but he stayed true to God. Please consider beginning your Lenten Discipline with the Ash Wednesday Service. Children are always welcome and expected to attend this service. Lenten Lunches We again this Lent will be hosting Wednesday luncheons from 12:00-1:00pm. Some of the area churches will be participating in this program. We will begin on Wednesday, February 25 th with the Parma Greece United Church of Christ providing lunch and Rev. Kurt Traugott beginning our series on the Beattitudes. Stay tuned to the bulletin and the March newsletter for more information. Town Hall Meeting on 2/8/15 for Small Groups Ministries after church service Report by the Small Group Ministries Team. 7 Prayer and Share Shower February 8 and February 15 Do you know we have a small group that meets every Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. to pray? They pray for people on our bulletin Prayer Concerns list, those that are residents of Care Facilities, those with ongoing health concerns and many others. The people receive cards of greeting from this group along with prayers. UMW(The United Methodist Women s Group) invites you to participate in our Prayer and Share Shower held each February to help this group by providing them with postage and cards. Baskets will be placed in the entrances to the Sanctuary for your donations of stamps, cash, and cards. The Prayer Group asks that cards be blank on the inside, so that they can write their own message to the recipient of the card. The Shower will be held for two Sundays February 8 th and February 15 th. As a recipient of cards from the Prayer Group I know that it uplifts the spirit and in my case helped my healing knowing that my church was in prayer for me. If you would like to join this small group they will be glad to have your support. Just come in on Monday mornings. They meet in the Church library, which is just across the hall from the church office. ~Janet LaBorie Tops Grocery Store Gift Cards UMW will continue to sell the TOPS Gift cards. The usual gift card comes in $100 denominations. Janet LaBorie has them, all you have to do is contact her at or JanetL39@gmail.com. Special order: you can order other denominations $20, $25, $50. As a rule we order only $100 gift cards unless asked for. Sometimes we order every month, sometimes every other month, it depends on how many are sold. Tops has also come out with special occasion gift cards.--- Happy Birthday, Celebrate, Thank you, Happy Holidays cards are also available. Please plan ahead to give us time to purchase any of these cards as they will be purchased with our regular order. At the January UMW meeting it was decided that the money earned ($50 for each $1000 cards ordered) in 2014 and 2015 will be put in the new table fund. Our tables in Fellowship Hall are heavy and some of them have been damaged. It is time to get new tables, ones that are easier to handle. Did you know we have Eggs in the refrigerator? Lots of them. About once a month I (Janet LaBorie) have been bringing 2 cartons of eggs (60 dozen) for the congregation to take home (hopefully it helps with your grocery bill). The eggs cannot be sold but donations can be accepted and are greatly appreciated. The money donated will go to the UMW table fund to replace our Fellowship Hall tables. There is a plastic bear container in the refrigerator next to the carton of eggs for you to put your moneyy in or you can give the money directly to Janet LaBorie. Those who cook for church events are encouraged to use the eggs to help with their food budgets, i.e. Sharing Suppers, breakfasts, etc If you need an egg carton, they are under the table by the restroom in the Fellowship Hall. 7

Hilton United Methodist Church on Facebook HUMC has two online ministries using Facebook. The first one shown below is a Company, Organization or Business page. Anyone on Facebook can see this page, comment on postings and share postings with others anywhere in Facebook. There are 4 administrators to this page who simply have permission to create postings on the page. The Admins on this page are Pastor Jennifer, Bob Comstock, Pat VanVleck and myself Ed Earnhart. The focus of this page is largely outside HUMC and not meant to be a communication tool within HUMC. Page purpose: The objective is to create disciples of Jesus Christ outside the walls of the church where they work and live and draw them in to join us for service or to a scheduled event. Articles are posted about the upcoming worship message as well as postings relative to the season as well as postings about events going on in the church. Some of the postings are written by Pastor Jennifer and some are written by myself (Ed Earnhart). This page is open to the entirety of Facebook. The outreach efforts however are focused on the 240,000 Facebook users within a 25 mile radius of Hilton. On any given week we reach about 10,000 or 4% of the target audience. Below is some information on the demographics we reached during the last 28 days. During the last 28 days HUMC Facebook postings were served to roughly 17,000 people. This is equivalent to putting an article in the Suburban News and the numbers of newspapers that were delivered to customers. 11

Also during the last 28 days, roughly 350 people actively engaged with the HUMC Facebook page. That is they liked, commented or shared the HUMC page to others. This is equivalent to someone actually seeing the article you put in the Suburban News and took time to read it, and then tell someone about it or cut it out and share it to someone else. Of the 350 or so people who are actively engaged every month, roughly 260 people have told Facebook that they like our page and want to hear more from HUMC. These 260 people are served every posting from HUMC. 12

The second Facebook ministry is a Prayer Group. A group page is where a group of people with a shared interest communicate with each other. The Hilton United Methodist Church NY Prayer Group is a closed group meaning that members of the group have to request permission to join. People outside the group can see the page heading and see who is in the group, however cannot see the postings shared within the group. This prayer group functions like a prayer circle. Someone will post a prayer and others connected in the group will read and many times respond with an Amen or a prayer of their own. Membership in the Prayer Group is limited to members, attendees and close friends of HUMC so that those in the group may feel free to share their personal requests for prayer. There are three administrators with permission to accept requests to join: Pastor Jennifer; Bob Comstock; and myself Ed Earnhart. Please feel free to ask me questions about these pages either in person or by . Ed Earnhart edgar.earnhart@gmail.com 13
