ONE FAITH, ONE HOPE, MANY GIFTS Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As I give thanks for the privilege of serving as your Bishop for ten years, I am mindful of so many blessings, especially your inspiring faith, caring spirit, and generosity. I see every day your love and generosity expressed through ministries that you have supported through your gifts to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Because of that support we are able to provide critical funding that enables the Church on Long Island to form our youth and adults in the faith, promote the dignity of life, provide quality education to our young people, feed the hungry, and foster vocations to the priesthood. Each parish operating on its own can only do so much, but when parishes join together, linking all of the people of our Diocese together, we can realize our unlimited potential. We can become God s instrument of mercy and love. We can come together as one body and become ever more deeply one, belonging ever more deeply to the Lord and to one another. As you consider making a pledge to this year s Appeal, please read the enclosed brochure that highlights some of the ministries and programs made possible by your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Thank you for considering this request and please pray for the continued success of our efforts to serve the people of God. With my prayers and gratitude, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre

WHO WE ARE WHEN WE Our Diocesan Catholic high schools not only value and promote academic excellence but also seek to shape an ethical perspective toward personal responsibility and societal engagement. Students volunteer in programs that care for those in need. They live their faith by bringing Christ s message of love and service to the local community and to the world. The teaching community at Holy Trinity fi rst inspired me to join the volunteer club. Now, I can t wait to get to the club after school. It is such a wonderful feeling to help others. -Lianna Students in the volunteer club meet after school to prepare special goody bags for the elderly nuns who live nearby. Serving others and sharing our gifts is a very important part of our faith, and St. John the Baptist gives me the opportunity to do that by getting involved in many different community service opportunities. - Cristian Students from St. John the Baptist volunteer at homes for the developmentally disabled. I really had the opportunity To Live Mercy by going on a mission trip to El Salvador with other McGann students to help build housing and work with the children there. Now, I am only looking at colleges that offer the same type of service programs. -Erika McGann Mercy students traveled to El Salvador to assist families in need.

LIVE AND SHARE OUR FAITH The Seminary of the Immaculate Conception s primary mission is the formation of our priests. Currently there are 39 Seminarians in formation. The Seminary also provides programs for men enrolled in Diaconate formation and laypersons studying for Master Degrees in Theology or Pastoral Studies. The priesthood is a call from Christ to live a relationship with Him by serving His people. Seminarian Michael Duffy heard that call when he was a teenager. When I was in high school, a friend invited me to attend his Campus Ministry program at St. Francis in Wantagh. Immediately I felt at home. I also began attending Sunday Mass with his family. The fi rst time I attended Mass, I knew I wanted to be a Priest. I looked up at the Priest and said I m supposed to do that. Knowing God had a plan for me makes me so happy. As a Diocesan Priest, my only hope and goal is to do God s will and minister to His people. Over the last three years 15 men were ordained for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Dedicated volunteer catechists educate the next generation of Catholics, devoting their time and talent to help our children understand their faith. Maureen, has been teaching religion for more than seven years. The most important thing that students hear in my class is about how much Jesus loves them and how we need to show that love to others to be Christlike in our daily lives whether it be in the classroom, in the playground or at home. 12,000 Catechists educate more than 110,000 children in public schools.

WHO WE ARE WHEN WE Catholic Charities rehabilitation programs help people overcome their addictions and live the healthy lives that God intended for them. Susan fi rst experimented with drugs at the age of eleven. By her twenties she was a full blown addict. One day on the way into Manhattan to buy more drugs, Susan had an epiphany and pulled over to the side of the expressway crying and praying to God to help her. As she sat weeping, she refl ected on how wrong her life had become. I believed God was there with me and He helped me to summon up the courage to turn around, drive home to my mother and tell her what I had been hiding from her and our family for so many troubling years, shared Susan. With her family s support and her renewed faith in God, today Susan relies on Catholic Charities outpatient program which keeps her focused on recovery. She is free from drugs, working and going to school, recapturing the life that she knew was hers all along. I was up for three days and on my way to Manhattan to buy more drugs when I pulled over to the side of the expressway and cried asking God to please help me Last year, more than 2,000 people were helped by Catholic Charities Chemical Dependence programs.

CARE FOR GOD S PEOPLE Parish Outreach programs provide food, clothing and support to thousands of people in our community. Those who are in need find comfort, hope, and real solutions to the challenges they face. Similar to 113 of our Parishes, the Parish Social Ministry at St. Patrick s in Bay Shore has numerous programs that serve the community including elder service, employment advocacy, project warmth, shots for tots, a food pantry, as well as a very active soup kitchen that is open 10:30 A M 1:30 PM Monday through Friday and serves anyone in the community who needs a nutritious meal. This program means so much, not only to me but to so many homeless in our community. Without this program, I don t know what some of us would do I think some would die. -Raymond I thank God every day for the wonderful people in this parish and the community that make this program possible. -Peter Outreach programs at our Parishes serve more than 19,000 families a month.

WHO WE ARE AS WE BUILD THE KINGDOM OF GOD Bringing God s Word to secular college campuses across Long Island, our campus ministers reach out to raise Catholic spiritual awareness through Masses, retreats, and Reconciliation. Campus Ministry also provides a social network for participants, with activities that bring about a fellowship among Catholic students. Students are also encouraged to go into the community for a variety of service projects. Campus Ministry allows students in this modern world, with all the temptations out there, to really focus on their faith. We can be Catholic and we can be proud of it. I have also grown spiritually, grown as a person and I feel so connected to God. Before I just knew of Him, but now I truly know Him. Allen - Adelphi University I had always been involved with my parish, and I was so glad to find a community of faith here at Hofstra. People my own age, who I could share things with, celebrate Mass with, and who had the same beliefs I did. It was so very important to me. Stephanie - Hofstra University More than 50,000 students participate in Campus Ministry programs at secular college campuses across Long Island.
