We must never lose sight of the fact that salvation by obedience to the law (i.e.; salvation by human effort) and salvation by faith in Christ are two mutually exclusivereligionsthatcannotbeintermingled.becausethewordofgodinformsus thatsalvationisbyfaithinchrist, letusbesuretostayonthecourseoffaithandnot deviate from that course, let us not cross the line and venture into the realm of salvationbyworks. I.StayontheCourseofFaith, BecausetheLawCannotReplaceFaithastheWayofSalvation(3:15 18) In verses the Apostle Paul is dealing with God s covenant of promise originallymadewithabraham, andthefactthatthelawgivenatmt.sinaicannot replacethatcovenantasanewwayofsalvation. Genesis15recordsforusthemakingofthatcovenantwithAbraham(whoatthat timewasknownasabram): AfterthesethingsthewordofJehovahcametoAbraminavision, saying,Fear not, abram, iamyourshield, andyourrewardshallbeexceedinglygreat. 2 And Abramsaid,OLordJehovah, whatwillyougiveme, seeingthatIamchildless, andtheonewhoshallinheritmyestateiseliezerofdamascus? 3 AndAbram said, tomeyouhavegivennooffspring;soaservantborninmyhouseholdis myheir. 4 ThenthewordofJehovahcametohim, saying,Thismanshallnotbe yourheir;rather, hewhoshallcomeforthoutofyourownbowelsshallbeyour heir. 5 And[Jehovah]broughthimout[totheopenfield]andsaid,Looktoward heavenandnumberthestars, ifyouareabletonumberthem.thenhesaidto him, So shall your offspring be. 6 And he believed Jehovah; and [Jehovah] creditedittohimasrighteousness.(gen.15:1 6) Abram srelationshipwiththelordwasbasedonfaith faithinthelord sword andhisabilitytofulfillhisword(gen.15:6.)baseduponthisfaithrelationship, thelordpromisedtogiveabramthepromisedlandofcanaan: Andhesaidto him, iamjehovahwhobroughtyououtofurofthechaldees, inordertogiveyou this land to inherit (Gen. 15:7.) Note: The Old Testament land of Canaan was a spiritualmodelortypeofthekingdomofheaven. Abramnowaskedforasignofconfirmation, apledgefromtheLORD: Andhesaid, OLordJehovah, howshallIknowthatIshallinheritit? (Gen.15:8.) InresponsetoAbram srequestthelordestablishedhiscovenantwithabram: Andhesaidtohim,Bringmeathree year oldheifer, athree year oldshe goat and a three year old ram, also a turtledove and a young pigeon. 10 Abram

ThustheLORDmadeacovenantwithAbram:acovenantofgrace, oneinwhich AbramwouldtrusttheLORDtodotheworkoffulfillingtherequirementsofthe covenant;acovenantthatwasestablished430yearsbeforethegivingofthelaw onmt.sinai. Withthisasbackground,wecancometoGalatians3:15 18andunderstandhow thatoriginalcovenantofpromise(or,covenantofgrace)continuestobetheone andonlywayofsalvation itcannotbearbitrarilyreplacedbyanewcovenantof works, one in which human effort replaces the role of faith as man s responsibilityinthecovenant. In verse 15 the apostle reminds the Galatians of the binding character of a covenant.onceacovenanthasbeenratifieditbecomeslegallybinding:itcannot beannulled;itcannotbealteredbytheadditionofnewtermsthatwouldconflict withthebasicstructureoftheoriginalcovenant.ifthisholdstruewithregardto aman madecovenant, howmuchmoreisthistruewithregardtogod scovenant! InNumbers23:19thereisrevealedtoustheunchangeableintegrityofGod: God isnotaman, thatheshouldlie;norasonofman, thatheshouldchangehismind. Doeshespeakandthennotact?Doeshepromiseandnotfulfill? Thepointbeing madeingalatians3:15isthis:god scovenantwasestablishedwithabraham;as such, it is a binding covenant that must be fulfilled and cannot be annulled or altered. In verse 16 the Apostle Paul points out that God made this covenant with Abraham and Christ. The promises were spoken to Abraham and his offspring

4 (or, seed.) Paul is alluding to Genesis 13:14 15, After Lot had separated himself fromhim, jehovahsaidtoabram, Nowliftupyoureyesfromtheplacewhereyou areandlooknorthwardandsouthwardandeastwardandwestward; 15 becausei will give to you and to your offspring forever all the land that you see. In so doing Paul is teaching that even before the LORD made a formal covenant with Abraham He had already made His promise to Abraham and his offspring (Abraham s one singular offspring) the covenant recorded in Genesis 15 was merelyaformalizingofgod ssurepromisesforabraham ssake. Paulemphasizesthefactthattheoffspringreferredtoisnotplural( offsprings, ) but singular ( offspring ) one singular descendant of Abraham. Note Genesis 22:16 18, a passage in which the LORD distinguishes a singular offspring of Abraham: Ihaveswornbymyself, declaresJehovah 17 IwillsurelyblessyouandIwill surelymultiplyyouroffspringasthestarsoftheheavensandasthesandofthe seashore.youroffspringshalltakepossessionofthecityofhisenemies. 18 By youroffspringshallallthenationsoftheworldbeblessed.(gen.22:16 18) Paul is emphasizing is the fact that God s covenant of promise was established with Abraham and Abraham s one great Descendant; and that one great DescendantisJesus, theChrist(theMessiah.) The point of Galatians 3:16 is this: Since the covenant was made with Abraham andhisonegreatdescendant, jesuschristthemessiah, itwasnotpossibleforthe covenant to be fulfilled prior to the coming of Christ into the world and it certainlycouldnotbenullified. In verse 17 Paul concludes that the law given at Mt. Sinai cannot nullify the originalcovenantofpromise.thelawwasgiven430yearsafterthecovenantof promise was ratified; but it was given centuries before Christ came into the world.sothen,thelawgivenatmt.sinaicouldnotpossiblyreplacethecovenant thathadbeenpreviouslyratifiedbutwasnotyetfulfilled. The law was added because of the transgressions. Thatistosay, the(sacrificial)lawwasinstitutedbyGodtodeal with the transgressions of the people. The law reveals that God s justice demands that sin be punished the Old Testament sacrificial laws gave the prescribed sacrifices that were required for atonement during the Old Testamentera.ThelawrevealsthatGodHimselfprovidestheatoningsacrifice for sinners the Old Testament sacrificial laws prescribed animal sacrifices insteadofthesacrificeofthesinnerhimself, andthoseoldtestamentsacrifices pointedforwardtotheultimatesacrificeforsinsprovidedbygod:hisownson, JesusChrist.JohntheBaptisttestifiedofJesus, Look, theLambofGodwhotakes awaythesinoftheworld! Thesacrificiallawswereineffectuntilthe MessiahcametoofferHimselfasthetrulyacceptablesacrificeforsin.TheBook ofhebrewsemphasizestheinadequacyoftheoldtestamentsacrificiallawsas the means of truly cleansing the sinner from sin. The sacrifices of the Old Testament, prescribed by the sacrificial law, could never make the sinner perfect, (i.e.; those animal sacrifices could never truly atone for a man s sins andtrulysatisfythejusticeofgod): Thelawisonlyashadowofthegoodthingsthatarecoming nottherealities themselves; for this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlesslyyearafteryear, makeperfectthosewhodrawneartoworship. 2 Ifit could, would they not have stopped being offered? for the worshipers would havebeencleansedonceforall, andwouldnolongerhavefeltguiltyfortheir sins.(heb.10:1 2) The blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins: those sacrifices are an annualreminderofsins, 4 becauseitisimpossibleforthebloodofbullsandgoatsto take away sins (Heb. 10:3 4); animal sacrifices can never be a truly adequate substituteformen. The Old Testament priests could never provide a perfect sacrifice to atone for sin as is evidenced by the fact that they repeatedly offered the same animal sacrifices: Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins (Heb.10:11.) The Book of Hebrews also emphasizes the perfection of Christ s work of atonement.bytheoneofferingofhisownbody, christperfectedforeverthose who trust in Him: by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy (Heb. 10:14.) Christ has put away sin that is to say, He has onceandforalldealtwithsin bythesacrificeofhimself: [Christ]hasappeared onceforallattheendoftheagestodoawaywithsinbythesacrificeofhimself (Heb.9:26.)Christofferedonesacrificeforever: whenthispriest[jesuschrist] hadofferedforalltimeonesacrificeforsins, hesatdownattherighthandofgod (Heb.10:12);HisactofsittingdownindicatesthatHisworkiscompleted. Whatisthepurposeofthelaw?AccordingtoGalatians3:21 22,the(moral)law was given to show our need for salvation. Verse 21 presents a hypothetical situation:ifalawhadbeengiventhatwasabletoimpartlife, thenrighteousness wouldhavecomebythelaw.thatistosay, ifgodhadgivenalawthatwouldnot onlydeclaretomanwhatisright, butwouldalsohavecausedustodowhatis right, thenrighteousnessandacceptancewithgodwouldhavecomebythatlaw. Soitisthatthemorallawshowsusourneedforsalvationandpointsus away from ourselves to Christ as the only One who can meet our need and provideforoursalvation. Whatisthepurposeofthelaw?Accordingtoverses23 25,the(ceremonial)law wasgiventostimulatethedesireforsalvation."thelawbecameourguardian." InGreeksocietyaguardian(paidagwgoV)wasaslavewhowasputinchargeof hismaster ssonduringtheyearsofthechild sadolescence from6 14yearsof age. This slave was not a teacher but a guardian, responsible for the child s safety, protectinghimfromtheevilsofsociety.theguardianhadconstantand total supervision over the child, regulating all of the child s activities and acquaintances.throughoutantiquitysuchguardianswereknownfortheirsour disposition and severity the child longed for the day when he would come of age and be released from the custody of his guardian. But until that day, the guardian s main function was to keep the child under constant surveillance, protecting him from evil and making him stay in line with his father s requirements. Paul informs us that the Old Testament law, especially the ceremoniallawwithallofitsregulations, servedthefunctionofbeingaspiritual guardian: through its multitude of ordinances and regulations, the Old Testament law kept the people of Israel under constant surveillance and separationfromthegentileworld. "The law became our guardian for Christ." The Old Testament law served this functionof guardian inordertoguardthepeopleforchrist(sothattheywould notdriftintopaganism.)atthesametimecreatingintheirheartsthedesirefor thesalvationchristwouldbring. ThemessageofGalatians3:19 25isthis:Thelawwasneverintendedtoreplace thecovenantofpromise thelawwasneverintendedtoreplacefaithastheway of salvation. On the contrary, the sacrificial law was intended to illustrate the way of salvation; one purpose of the moral law was to show our need for salvation; and the ceremonial law was intended to stimulate a desire for the salvationthatonlychristhimselfcouldaccomplish.
