1 2014 Ministry and Group Opportunities at Central Ministry/Group Mission Tasks, Activities Time Commitment Assisting Ministers (Intercessors) Lay worship leader at most every Central worship service Primary lay leader for a given service; may coordinate other lay ministers for that service and may also be intercessor for the day. Write prayer petitions Augsburg Central Health Commons As a health service center administered and staffed by nurses from Augsburg College, to provide health assessment and education, counseling and health advocacy. Accept donations of large disposable diapers, men s white tube socks, deodorant and other personal hygiene items. Nurses are encouraged to consider volunteering in the Center. Camp Amnicon To connect Central Lutheran Church and Camp Amnicon through events, publicity, and by attending meetings and events locally on behalf of the camp and to raise awareness of the camp s mission and needs Publicity, coffee hosting, event coordination/planning Work with other ministry teams to promote joint events Promotion, fundraising 1 ½ hour quarterly meetings or as needed to plan and coordinate events Caring Ministry To share the love of Christ through a ministry of listening, praying, visiting and caring for people in times of transition, change or challenge. A group is trained each year. (Contact the church office to discuss your interest in being trained) May include lay delivery of Holy Communion. Time varies with needs of assigned person. Quarterly meetings for education and member care updates. Central Cares for Creation (C3) Ministry To encourage us all to respect, conserve and care for God s creation. Restore. Reuse. Recycle. Model care for creation and serve as environmental conscience at CLC. Provide ideas, resources and support to other committees/ministry teams of CLC in adopting creation care practices and programs. 2 Children, Family, and Sunday School Ministry Circle of Friends To provide an educational, loving and interesting environment on Sunday mornings in which children (3 yrs through 5 th grade) learn Bible stories to nurture individual and group faith formation Individuals willing to share their talents with children on Sundays from 9:45-10:45 a.m. as needed. (Depending on content of lesson) This can be a one-time or short-term commitment. Bible study, book discussions, service projects for community groups and Lutheran World Relief and Depends on volunteer preference. Meets in member homes on the third Thursday evening of the month Circle of Gratitude Hosts the Mother/Daughter/Sister/Friend Breakfast Circle of Hope Quilters (for Lutheran World Relief) Communion & Baptism Ministers To sew quilts for Lutheran World Relief. To assist in celebration of the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. Prepare packets for home sewing. Assemble quilts to be given to Lutheran World Relief. Serve communion. Training provided. Work independently from home; meet first Friday and Saturday in September, October, November, February, March, April, May to assemble quilts. 3 Community Outreach To give and receive love in action by providing worship experience and offering referrals and support for homeless and low-income people in our community. Individuals to work with meal preparation in the kitchen or with the sorting and organization of clothing and household goods in the Clothes Closet. Donations of clothes, household goods, and hygiene products always welcome. (Kitchen help) Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or some portion of that time. (Clothes Closet) Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Cradle Roll To communicate support and information about Christian education to families of baptized children (beginning after baptism until age 3) Individuals work at the church to gather materials and prepare for mailing. Substitutes are needed to learn the process. Approximately two hours a month. Environment and Art for Worship To create the seasonal liturgical decor in the sanctuary and other areas of the campus. The team carries out its duties for these seasons; Advent/Christmas/Epiphany; Lent/Holy Week/Easter; Pentecost; Spring/Summer; and Fall. 4 Faith and Finances To be the imaginative thinkers in creating a new CLC culture to foster financial stewardship practices that assist us in being faithful followers of our triune God while supporting Central s mission to welcome people to celebrate, discover and share the love of Jesus Christ. Stewardship Goal: Grow stewards Understand and be grounded in the theological and biblical principles for faithful stewardship and joyful generosity. Investigate best practices used by other churches who embrace the concept that it all belongs to God. Create a year round plan that challenges and educates the congregation on stewardship competencies and financial well being as an expression of faith in a holistic manner. Be willing to build relationships with ministry team members to foster individual stewardship maturity. Fine Art To enrich the life of Central Lutheran by providing for and encouraging the appreciation and creative expression of art. There is no expectation that team members will contact members to ask for money! Sponsor art exhibits and search out art works for acquisition, including commissioning art works. Place/hang art in various rooms of the church, decorate trees seasonally. To be scheduled Floral Guild Coordinate Sunday floral tributes, as well as Easter lily and Christmas poinsettia gifts. Meet on first Tuesday of the month in member homes September-May. To gather with others to provide for an enhanced worship setting and to share in a monthly Bible study at a member s home. 5 From Scratch Funeral Reception Garden Ministry Working together with a professional baker and team builder, gather at Central on scheduled Thursdays to make and bake refreshments from scratch for special events and coffee hours at Central. To help in expressing Central s care for bereaved family and friends. To visually enhance Central s welcome to the community. Based on events set by Central s calendar, create menus for baking based on theme for the event. Prepare and serve at receptions following funerals. On-the-job training provided. Tend to outdoor flowers and greenery with a spring planting, fall clean-up, and summer maintenance; water indoor plants once a week. Approximately 4 hours per Thursday scheduled and 2 hours per event 2-day notice prior to serving at funeral reception. No structured meetings or officers. Group activity two to three Saturdays a year. Also need volunteers to help with routine maintenance, perhaps on a rotational basis. GLBT Advocacy To function as a voice within Central and the Minneapolis Area Synod, advocating for the full acceptance of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender persons. Create discussion and education opportunities centered on the full acceptance of GLBT persons into the life of Central. Monthly meetings to be scheduled Global Mission To educate the congregation about the spiritual and physical needs of the global community; help channel resources to the needs of the world. Sponsor/present weekly forums; i.e., education, information, dialogue with missionaries, seminary faculty, etc. Advocate interest in and support for global mission projects by Central leadership and members. meets monthly for approximately two hours Grace Circle Bible study Lutheran Women Today, stewardship projects Meets at 1 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month in Room Central and Program Opportunities (revised 1/14) Page 5 of 12
6 Greeters/Hosts Grief Support To provide hospitality and welcoming to all members and guests entering Central's doors for worship and other services and special events. Greeters to welcome members and guests to worship services and/or special events, concerts, etc. Coordinates greeters to welcome guests to public events. Hosts to serve coffee and cookies in South Common as a part of Central s hospitality. Heading Home Central Ministry Called by our faith in Jesus Christ and God s call for us to do justice for all people, Central s Outreach Ministry works in partnership with individuals, families and other faith communities offering service to all. Research and learn about homelessness Plan social justice/homelessness events. In collaboration with Downtown Churches to End Homelessness, create vehicles to advocate to changes. meets the 3 rd Tuesday of the month Health Ministry To share the love of Christ through a ministry of integrating the relationship of faith and health physically, psychologically and spiritually with hope, caring, beauty, worship, education and advocacy. Write articles for the Spirit; plan events to promote a healthy congregation, e.g., Health Sunday To be scheduled Heritage To preserve Central s historical documents, pictures and artifacts which tell the story of the church s service through worship, music, classes, organizations and neighborhood ministry Collect, catalogue, and store variety of historical items. 7 Hospitality (WelcomeLife) Kitchen Ministry (being developed) Library Ministry Maintenance Custodial Support Ministry Central s strategic planning group for hospitality to members and guests. To provide kitchen support during special events. To provide and maintain reference and lending library resources for members and staff. To support Central s staff as they prepare for big events or large projects. Sunday mornings and occasional special events Seasonal task groups Event planning teams Greeters and hosts Sunday coffee hour(s)-multiple teams Public events Tour docents Sunday and weekday receptionists Pew bags Kitchen volunteers Provide food prep, set-up, or clean-up work. Work a 2 hour shift when scheduled. Library planning, management, publicity and maintenance direction and support. Additional core of at least four volunteers to provide operational and loaner record-keeping support. Experience useful but not necessary. Called as needed to organize storage spaces; light cleaning to prepare for guests; some carpentry work; painting; and other projects as they come up Most commitments vary from one time to serving on a regular schedule. Volunteer time varies. One year on the call list. Music Organizations To provide music for all of Central s worship services. Musical training and experience are necessary depending on the nature of the group. Persons interested in sharing vocal or instrumental gifts at Central, should call Mark or Jane. Weekly rehearsals for vocal and bell choirs are held Wednesday evenings, for 1 to 2 hours. 8 New Member Connection New Member & Ambassadors To welcome new members and encourage participation in the ministries of the congregation and community. To encourage involvement, commitment, and empower them to strengthen their faith through service. This is a subteam of the Shared. To offer hospitality to visitors and new members; coordinate new member classes and reception. Network with new members, ambassadors, and the New Member Make occasional phone calls to new members Invite new members to fellowship hour or upcoming events at Central. Introduce them to others Serve as ambassadors to new members; provide hospitality to new members at classes and receptions. Receptions held three times per year. The team meets at 6:15 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month Nursery Ministry To create a loving and safe environment for the youngest of Central s members and guests. Participate in follow-up efforts with visitors Ensure safety of children and adults by building a team of volunteers to always have 2 adults in nursery. As often as preferred. A schedule will be available to sign up a month in advance. Oversee activities Older Wiser Lutheran Seniors (OWLS) To enhance the lives of Central members aged 55 and older by offering a variety of social, recreational, educational and spiritual programs. Monthly events available to members through advance sign-up; volunteers needed to help set up for events at church. Planning committee meets at 1 p.m. on first Wednesday of the month in Fireside Lounge Central and Program Opportunities (revised 1/14) Page 8 of 12
9 Peace with Justice Ministry To implement, within Central, a program of education and action around issues of peace and justice, seeking to supplant the evils of war, violence, poverty, hunger, economic injustice, environmental degradation, racism, and other oppressions. Provide educational opportunities related to peace and justice. Forums held from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. the third Sunday of each month in Fellowship Hall Pew Bag To encourage participation of children in services held in the sanctuary, without detracting from the worship experience of others Prepare and repair cloth bags holding materials for children. Varies, according to time availability of volunteers. Prayer, Spirituality and Meditation Processional Corps To explore, foster and support prayer in all of its forms in the hearts and lives of the congregation. To lead or assist with the procession of the cross, torch, banners for worship services including Sunday mornings, evenings, funeral services and special events. Informs members about existing prayer endeavors, shares weekly concerns through prayer chain, sponsors prayer shawl ministry; arranges for spiritual retreats. Sponsors Lenten vigil. To be scheduled Readers/Lectors To proclaim the Word during worship though interpretive reading of the texts for the day. Workshops and coaching by pastors and experienced readers help to reinforce skills, build confidence and provide support. You decide how often. Sacristans (& Altar Guild) To maintain the quality and character of items in the chancel and sacristy, including the preparation of communion and care for paraments. Prepare/set-up communion for Sunday mornings and special services. Help with the laundering of communion linens Central and Program Opportunities (revised 1/14) Page 9 of 12
10 Seminary Relations To promote congregational awareness of seminarians who are members of Central, or associated with Central in contextual education or internship assignments. To establish required tuition funding needs for Central member who are seminarians and administer distribution of such funds. To explore ways to strengthen relationships between congregation and members who are considering or are engaged in studies at ELCA seminaries To interact with seminarians involved with contextual education or internship assignments at Central Reviews tuition funding requests submitted by Central member seminarians; arranges annual Seminary Sunday at Central, sponsor annual Seminary Brunch. Varies meetings held on as needed basis, usually four to six two-hour meetings per year Shalom Circle Meets at 6 p.m. the second Monday of the month in Room 123 Shared Ministry Leadership To plan and implement a system to help others identify their gifts, engage in ministries, and support their work. Work in teams to write position descriptions, create a gift survey for database of skills, gifts and talents, plan recognition events, support disciples in ministries, and integrate new members into life of the church. To help provide a comfortable and welcoming church to all who walk through the doors of Central. To serve as a friendly source of information and welcome at the Church Office reception desk. Along with a team, make coffee, set out cookies, serve, and clean up. Answer telephone, route calls, respond to inquiries, and refer to pastors as appropriate. Sign up to be available to provide a tour on Sundays or during special events. Training will be provided. Greet worshippers, give out bulletins, collect offerings, and assist with special church service activities. 2 hour commitment between services. You decide how often. 2 hour shift one Sunday per quarter for one year; term renewable Decide how often to be scheduled on Sundays throughout the year. One service per Sunday every other month. Assignments made to regular ushering teams. Each person serves a shift of ½ day each week for one (1) year renewable term WorshipLife Seasonal Pattern Worship s Central s strategic planning group for worship. To help create and maintain a welcoming, reverent worship space; coordinate worship volunteers, and foster and support an attitude of joy and splendor within worship to provide a sense of inspiration for all worshipers.
