Special attention is given to Friedrich Schleiermacher and John Henry Cardinal Newman. Institute for Pastoral Theology at Ave Maria University: The Theology of Vatican II A historical and systematic treatment of the Second Vatican Council. All conciliar documents are read. The Theology of John Paul II A survey of the principal themes and texts of the late Pope John Paul II. Particular emphasis will be given to John Paul s anthropology and his work in the authentic implementation of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. Church History Graduate-level survey of ecclesiastical history with a strong emphasis on primary texts. Ecclesiology - A systematic and dogmatic exposition of the doctrine of the Church. 3 Christian Belief Today A contemporary introduction to systematic theology. The nature of doctrine and the purpose of theological reflection are examined in the course of a semester-long exposition of the Nicene Creed. Christian Marriage An introduction to the theoretical and practical meaning of marriage as a sacrament, employing a combination of biblical, theological, philosophical, and psychological texts. The Church An upper-division course devoted to fundamental issues in ecclesiology. Themes include the Church s place in the economy of salvation, the nature and purpose of ecclesiastical authority, the Church s missionary activity, and ecumenism. Music and the Bible Interdisciplinary course in church music involving both the elements of music theory as well as the theological character and liturgical purposes of sacred music. The Catholic Vision An interdisciplinary introduction to the Catholic intellectual and spiritual Tradition. Texts are drawn from philosophical, theological, and literary figures. The Search for Happiness - An introductory course in theological anthropology. The class considers the meaning of human nature and the proper ends, both natural and supernatural, of human living.
