Poetry evenings Colloquia Seminars Conferences School of Spiritual Science Dear friends of the Literary Arts and Humanities Section We are pleased to present our calendar of events and study programme for In 2013, we focused on the development of the consciousness soul and in 2014 the transition from the consciousness soul to the spirit self will move to the centre of our attention. We will look at this topic from various angles: the spirit-thinking of Nicholas of Cusa, Rudolf Steiner and Christian Morgenstern; on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of Christian Morgenstern s death we will explore the impressive cosmos of his work and biography. The Whitsun Conference on the Fifth Gospel and a cultural conference on Lazarus John will explore important questions of human evolution from the point of view of Christology. In a conference on Rudolf Steiner s book The Riddles of Philosophy, which was published in 1914, we look at how this work and its motifs evolved and how they related to that time. deepening the various subjects through anthroposophy. Goetheanum publishing (Verlag am Goetheanum) is to send you our newsletter, catalogue or list of new publications. Visit for more information. If you have questions regarding the work of the Section, the Section groups in other countries, any of the study groups or relevant literature, please visit the Section website on ssw.goetheanum.org. We are also happy to send you all this information in print if you do not have internet access. With warm regards, Christiane Haid

The Order of Destinies An important motif in the work of Albert Steffen with Hans-Peter Egloff, Christine Engels, Christiane Haid, Steffen Hartmann, Heinz Matile and Marret Winger The order of destinies is an important motif in Albert Steffen s life and work. present life as well as earlier incarnations. As we see in Steffen s play Karoline von Günderrode, the writer can show this with individualities with whose destiny he connects after their death. But the order of destinies has also a much wider meaning. In his book about the foundation of the Mystery Dramas (Keimgrund der Mysteriendramen), Steffen speaks of the communion with thoughts of humanity that, even though they have general validity, can only be brought to realization in individual ways. With this conference we will try to get closer to this motif. February 2 Poetry Evening I Christian Morgenstern From Friedrich Nietzsche to Christian Morgenstern Palace, to the spirit of Friedrich Nietzsche. This evening is dedicated to their spiritual friendship. February Folktale Seminar The trials in folktales Take me with you or you will never find the way out of this swamp with Almut Bockemühl, Angelika Schmucker, Silvia Studer-Frangi and Sonja Theiler A lecture, conversations and folktales from all over the world will cast light on February Colloquium Colloquium on Folktales with Thymiane Baumeier, Almut Bockemühl, Angelika Schmucker and others In these meetings we study folktales from the anthroposophical point of view. Text study of works by Rudolf Steiner, work reports, conversations on topics such as storytelling, style, symbolism, image consciousness etc. are components

of our gatherings, which take place twice a year. Open to anyone interested following an initial conversation. Contact: Literary Arts and Humanities Section February 28 March 2 February Meeting Nicholas of Cusa, Rudolf Steiner, Christian Morgenstern Spirit-Thinking: Changing Consciousness and Community Building In collaboration with the Youth Section with Christiane Haid, Constanza Kaliks and Harald Schwaetzer For further information please contact the Literary Arts and Humanities Section or the Youth Section March 2 Poetry Evening II Karl Thylmann and Johannes Leibl Andrea Hitsch, presentation Johannes Leibl The poet and designer Karl Thylmann ( ) was, along with Georg Trakl and Franz Marc, among the most tragic losses the arts suffered through the war. Inspired by the composers Wilhelm Petersen and Karl Wolfskehl, he was immensely creative for ten years, his search leaving a unique trace of light in words and images. The poems and drawings of Thylmann, who died near Verdun in the war, speak of a profoundly experienced Christianity. Johannes Leibl ( ), poet, philosopher and painter, was born into a world of luxury as the son of a Meran hotel owner. In taking over from his father after years before his premature death he found his true path in anthroposophy, through Albert Steffen and Alexander Strakosch. March 7 9 Colloquium Thirteenth Colloquium on Linguistics with Magdalena Zoeppritz, Rimbert Chrobock, Jutta Nöthiger, Michael Türk et al. There are various ways of access to the sense of language and various views on what the sense of language is. During this weekend we share our views on this question. We welcome contributions from your own current work as well as new participants. Contact: magdalena.zoeppritz@rhein-neckar.de / Literary Arts and Humanities Section

March Cultural Conference Meeting Christian Morgenstern On the 100 th anniversary of Christian Morgenstern s death All things become one single You with Christiane Haid, Steffen Hartmann, David Marc Hoffmann, Ernst Kretschmer, Johannes Lenz, Serge and Dominique Maintier, Peter Selg and Marret Winger The immense cosmos of Christian Morgenstern s work combines the depth of sacred earnestness with a sense of humour that releases us from our ties to the pettiness of everyday life. Morgenstern s way of looking at the world is that of someone who seeks for the spiritual essence of humanity. Early on in his life, selfeducation becomes a necessity for him. Through inner tempests he achieves the by step, to a new, transformed encounter with the world and with other human beings. When he meets his future wife Margareta Gosebruch von Liechtenstern This conference will, in artistic presentations and lectures, provide a festive encounter with this poet and writer who can be so deeply inspiring for our time. April 6 Poetry Evening III Friedrich Hölderlin Learn art from life, and life from art... Friedrich Hölderlin Andrea Hitsch, presentation; Goetheanum Eurythmy Ensemble Friedrich Hölderlin ( ) was a most powerful poet. He was imbued with the soulfulness of nature and saw in beauty the manifestation of the divine and in the re-awakening of Hellenism a vocation. What led the sculptor Emmerich Andresen ( ) to create a monument to this lofty singer in Tübingen/ Germany? April 24 Colloquium Colloquium on Rudolf Steiner s creative linguistic impulse Organized by Christiane Haid This meeting takes place twice a year in Dornach and focuses on Rudolf Steiner s style and particular approach to language. Apart from his numerous writings and lectures on the essence of the word and of language we base our work on his considerations concerning recitation and eurythmy. We also look at Steiner texts from a poetological and literary perspective and include examples from literature. On invitation only / Contact: Literary Arts and Humanities Section

June 6 9 Whitsun Conference German with English translation The Whitsun Message of the Fifth Gospel in collaboration with the General Anthroposophical Section with Aban Bana, Werner Barfod, Michael Debus, Marc Desaules, Christiane Haid, Silke Kollewijn, Carina Schmid, Virginia Sease, Joan Sleigh, Matthias Veit, Marret Winger, Agnes Zehnter, Seija Zimmermann et al. After laying the foundation stone for the First Goetheanum, Rudolf Steiner gave many lectures on the Fifth Gospel within just a few months. Following on from the gospel cycles of the preceding years these lectures constitute the culmination of his Christology. He not only described the unknown years in the life of Jesus and his journey up to his baptism in the Jordan, but especially also the related inner processes. These processes are the archetype of a path to knowledge that can be the foundation for our inner development today. The Fifth Gospel also reveals the hidden roots of humanity s consciousness today and its dramatic potential for destructiveness: the struggle for the human I. The Whitsun Conference follows on from the Christmas Conference 2013 in that it focuses on Rudolf Steiner s gospel research with the intention of casting light on the multidimensional Gospel of Knowledge. June Studies on Rudolf Steiner s work The Riddles of Philosophy a hundred years on in collaboration with the cultural sciences study group of the School of Spiritual Science with Werner Barfod, Martin Basfeld, Eckart Foerster, Christiane Haid, Constanza Kaliks, Martin Kollewijn, Thomas Kracht, Harald Schwaetzer, David Wood, Peter Selg, Renatus Ziegler et al. Rudolf Steiner s review of historical and modern-day world conceptions, The the book as an extended new edition of a work from 1901 on 19 th century world and life concepts. But the 1914 publication has changed in many places compared to the older version. These changes have not been marked in any way and have, so far, hardly been noticed. They are not corrections, but cast light on the shift that had occurred in Steiner s primary concern. What was his concern? Why was it important to him to republish this work in 1914? Why did he feel compelled to extend or change his presentation of 19 th century world and life concepts into a probably ignore his work - what kind of readership did Rudolf Steiner have in mind when he wrote The Riddles of Philosophy? What part does it play for us today, a hundred years on? These are the kinds of question we will explore at the conference that will be devoted to anthroposophical as well as philosophical aspects. The lectures will be complemented by eurythmy sessions.

October Cultural Conference Lazarus John. The I touches the spirit self with Christiane Haid, Wolf-Ulrich Klünker and Mechtild Oltmann The new I can go through death. Resurrection becomes possible in the earthly not only the spiritual realm. The individual spirit becomes real in its relationship with the truth, and the truth becomes individual when the I strives for knowledge. Lazarus can be awakened by the Christ. When the individual spirit becomes able to reach the truth and come to resurrection, human beings can achieve a new relationship with the spirit. The ability to err and truth, mortality and eternity will no longer contradict each other. Resurrection and eternal life will no longer be religious concepts. Today we directly experience - at the threshold of personal failing and hopelessness, of illness, isolation and coercion - the search for the liberating and awakening power of the Christ. Can spiritual strength and the power of life come together? November Colloquium Colloquium on Folktales See February November 16 Poetry Evening VII Rainer Maria Rilke: the 1 st, 5 th and 10 th Duino Elegies and the same Esther Bohren, speech and drama; Claire Wyss, eurythmy; Joachim Scherrer, musical improvisation The Duino Elegies are a call of modern man, his despair, his longing to break out of his grey everyday life and come closer to the angels, to the dead. These poems lead us to the frontiers where wounded, loving souls go when they bear the pain; they lead through shadow to light, through pain to joy. November 27 Colloquium Colloquium on Rudolf Steiner s creative linguistic impulse see April 24
