4 American Martyrs Catholic Church Divine Mercy Remember that mercy lies deepest in God's heart. Few things so much approximate the essence of God as does mercy. Mercy is God's essence. Scripture uses words such as loving kindness and compassion to try to define what constitutes God's mercy, but the central biblical concept, captured in the Hebrew concept of hesed, connotes a relationship that loves, embraces and forgives even when, and especially when, we cannot measure up or deserve what's given us. from The 10 Commandments of Mercy by Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI Divine Mercy literature is available in the vestibule of the church. 6 American Martyrs Catholic Church time Stewardship talent treasure Commission Chair: Matt King Stewardship... moving us closer to God This week s readings have several significant messages. In the first reading from Genesis, Noah and his family sacrificed everything to build an ark that saved them from the flood. The family followed God s will which resulted in a new covenant between God and humanity. Normally, a covenant is an agreement between two parties. However, since this covenant is divinely imposed it should be plain to us that there is no room for negotiation on our part. We either accept or reject it. Accepting it means working to fulfill God s expectations. That is what stewardship is all about. In our second reading from the First Letter of Peter, he says, Christ suffered for our sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Being led to God should be a part of our lives now and throughout Lent. Peter makes reference to Noah and thus implies the covenant that God has with us. In fulfilling our part of the covenant we have to restore and strengthen our relationship with God. What we do during Lent, the sacrifices we make, and the disciplines we practice should have that intention. In the Gospel from St. Mark we hear The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for 40 days. It is obvious where our 40 days of Lent come from. But 40 is a recurring theme in the Bible. In the time of Noah s flood, it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Israel was in the wilderness for 40 years. The number 40 seems to be a time of testing for Noah, Israel and Jesus, and Lent is a time of testing for us. Everything we are called to do is to bring us the ideals of patience, sacrifice, self-discipline, commitment and, as Peter implies, hope. We have started Lent. The Lenten experience is very personal and we can't ask anyone else to do for us. It's a time of prayer and reflection. We must ask ourselves: are we doing what God expects from us and are we being good stewards by using our gifts to help others? If the answer to either question is "No," then Lent is a good time to change our pathway to God. Please contact us at Stewardship@AmericanMartyrs.org, with questions or comments about Stewardship. Please join us at 6:00am Mass on Monday and 6:00am Mass on Friday during Lent. It is a very spiritual, calming start to your day. A coffee social, hosted by Cornerstone men (on Monday) and Cornerstone sisters (on Friday), will be held in St. Kateri following Mass. Pastoral Care Beginning Again - Separated or Divorced We offer a welcoming and healing atmosphere for those experiencing separation or divorce. The next meeting is Tuesday, February 20, 7:00-9:00pm in the Holy Family House. The topic is "Letting Go." Questions? Jenny Attanasio, All are Welcome at American Martyrs We lovingly welcome those in the LGBTQ community and their families for support and faith sharing. Join us in the Sacred Heart House on the 2 nd Thursday of each month for friendship, fun and community. Our next meeting is Thursday, March 8 at 7:30pm. 8 American Martyrs Catholic Church Faith Formation DIVE-IN SESSIONS AT AMERICAN MARTYRS Monday, March 5, 7:30-9:00pm, in St. Kateri Dr. Christopher Kaczor: The Gospel of Happiness What is true happiness? How can you experience it? And can you live it wholeheartedly in your day-to-day life? Every thoughtful person asks such questions. Thoughtful Christians ask a few more questions. Can Christian practices enhance happiness? If so, how? And does Christianity provide happiness in a way that other paths, like psychology, cannot? Christopher Kaczor suggests answers to these and other questions about how to be happier. In The Gospel of Happiness, highlights seven ways in which positive psychology and Christian practice can lead to personal and spiritual transformation. Focusing on empirical findings in positive psychology that point to the wisdom of many Christian practices and teachings, he provides practical suggestions on how to become happier in everyday life and also insight on how to deepen Christian practice and increase love of God and neighbor in new and bold ways. Monday, March 12, 7:30-9:00pm, in St. Kateri Rev. Alexei Smith: Commemorating the Reformation during this 500th Anniversary Year We will examine the causes of the Reformation and where Catholics and Lutherans are today in the journey towards Christian unity. Visit to see the 24 different sessions that will be held at the 7 different parishes in our local South Bay area. Each course is $5 (which includes bring a friend for free) and can be paid at the door, or buy a Series Pass for $25 that is good for you (and a friend) for all courses. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. Ps 145 Come unto me all you who labor, and I will give you rest. Matt 11:28 Belonging: Come Unto Me Contemplative Prayer Lenten Retreat Tuesday evenings of Lent, 7:30-8:30pm Spirituality Center, St. Joseph s Chapel Each of us longs for belonging. Our basic search is what drives our lives. Jesus very clearly, in simple terms defines belonging, invites us to him and shows us the way. Please join us for two 20-minute periods of silent prayer, closing with Our Father. The intent of this retreat is to provide a thorough, personal examination of consciousness in one s own time, with the structured support of a weekly prayer group, leading to a deeper commitment to Christ within and beyond our faith community. At the close of the hour, there will be handouts with reflection questions and brief instructions for our personal/at home examination of consciousness. Newcomers are always welcome. Join us once, often or always for the Love of it! Ministry Contact: Donna Ennis There is a way to examine yourself and find within you the source of peace and light, where before only shadows have been seen. This examination grants the assurance of peace and serenity to you and to those who are around you. Mother Marie des Douleurs, Benedictine Sisters of Jesus Crucified Silent Meditation - The Prayer of the Heart During the Fridays of Lent join us for 30 minutes of Silent Meditation and contemplate the merciful love of the Father. God wants us to come to him with our joys and sorrows. To let him shine his light into our darkness. To let him love us and make us whole. To lay down at the foot of the cross all that he wishes to transform in our lives so that we are prepared for the cross of Good Friday, and the resurrection of new life with and through Jesus. Meditation is simply being still and silent in the loving presence of God. Simple, yes. Easy, no. We are not used to inaction and interior quiet. In this world of constant information, and doing instead of being, we need to create sacred space within our day and within our heart to be quiet in the Lord. It is in the silence that we come to know his love for us. Merciful Jesus, I Trust in You. Join us Friday mornings in St. Joseph s Chapel at the Spirituality Center (use Pacific Ave. entrance). All are welcome! 11:15-11:30am Optional: Time for Questions/Instruction 11:30-11:55am Silent Meditation 11:55-12:00pm Closing Prayer Ministry Contact: Beverly Busby,

Establishing boundaries around touch is integral to keeping kids safe. Having regular, open conversations about safety is one of the best ways to help keep kids safe. Remind children that their bodies are their own, encourage them to talk about their concerns and listen respectfully when they do. 11 February 18, 2018 First Sunday of Lent "A New Way to Be Church: Parish Renewal a la Pope Francis" Please Join Us TENTH ANNUAL MULLIGAN Jack Jezreel - March 15, :00pm, St. Kateri Room The topic of the presentation has to do with Pope Francis, the "Pope for the Poor," inviting the Catholic communities to rethink the way that parishes understand their purpose, structure, and mission. The hope of Pope Francis, echoing the story of St. Francis, is to "rebuild" the church, not with bricks and mortar but with compassion and mercy. Jack Jezreel will share Pope Francis' dream and offer some thoughts on how parishes might move forward with a very exciting future! Jack is the original author of JustFaith and founder of JustFaith Ministries. He is writer, speaker and teacher, focusing on the links between faith and compassion and a parish renewal strategy that draws from Pope Francis emphasis on missionary disciples. Over the last 15 years, he has given hundreds of presentations, including Keynote Addresses, continuing education for clergy and diocesan staff as well as parish, regional and national convenings. Jack was Keynote Speaker at the 2011 Religious Education Congress. QUESTIONS: Call Tony Fadale, All are welcome. No admission fee; only a good-will donation is asked. There will be refreshments available. to benefit the SAINT SEBASTIAN SPORTS PROJECT Supporting Catholic Schools Through Sports and to honor this year s Arrow Award recipient MARK HODSON coach, mentor and global activist SATURDAY, MARCH 3, :00-11:00 PM AMERICAN MARTYRS, O DONNELL HALL Dinner, Drinks, Live Entertainment and Auction Visit our website for more details Find this bulletin online at AmericanMartyrs.org
