2 Joy Joy Classes Joy of Living classes come in all sizes, with different faces, different locations, different languages, different ethnicities. Some are very large groups with several hundred people (including satellite groups) attending, while others have only a few. There are groups that meet in homes, restaurants, churches, Senior Citizen apartments, prisons, etc. All these groups have one thing in common: they come together to study God s Word in order to know Him better. God has truly blessed our class and we have all enjoyed studying the Joy of Living Bible studies, since they force us to go to the Bible for our answers. I am blessed to work with leaders who love the Lord and the women He brings us each week. Clara Welles and her Grants Pass, Oregon, Joy of Living home group. (Clara is in the white slacks) This is the crew that meets every Wednesday for the study in Acts. Now we are going to be blessed to finish the year in another Joy study!! We love the Joy of Living studies! Improve Your Leadership Make certain you are in fellowship with the Lord. Make certain you are on time. Dress appropriately - always modestly. Know your material well. Use visuals (graphs, diagrams, maps, etc.) Make certain you ve done your homework (even if group is doing it together in class). Don t be afraid to say, I don t know. At the end of class sum up what you ve covered and what conclusions you ve come to. Be enthusiastic. Use your sense of humor. Be excited about the discoveries made by others. Know your group pace your lesson according to them. If an individual seems slow to grasp the information, contact them privately. Ask them if they have any questions you could help them with. If someone seems to grasp the material more quickly than the others, contact them privately. Ask them if they would like additional resources or materials for their personal study. Create an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Always keep personal information confidential. Never talk about someone negatively. Make time in your class to get to know one another. 3 Joy in Prison In a previous newsletter we shared some of the wonderful stories of God s grace from Diane, who ministers to the women inmates at Central California Women s Correctional Facility (CCWF), located in Chowchilla, California. CCWF is the largest women s prison in the world, and it houses many of California s death row female inmates. These aren t little women in the jail at Mayberry. These are rough women in a rough, evil, dark place. - Diane We have changed the names of the inmates for privacy. Diane writes: Then there s Tracy. Tracy has been in prison for over 20 years and NEVER been to church or Bible study. She came to our study 2 weeks ago with a friend and one of my ministry partners was talking to them before class. The friend had tears in her eyes and said she needed prayer. We have the lecture first, and the lecture was on Heaven (John 14 - I go to prepare a place for you). Tracy s eyes were fixed on me and she never took them off. After the lecture as they were going to small group, she approached me and said, You really grabbed me. I really appreciated what you had to say. I thanked her and she went to small group. She was back again this Monday and shared with me, my ministry partners, and several inmates, I ve been in this place for 20 years. I was arrested at 16 for murder. I ve hated God for all those years because of what He allowed to happen and what He did to my grandmother. I ve been very angry and been a fighter in this place. I was bullied as a child and always took it and just cried, well I decided NOBODY was ever going to bully me again, so for years in this place I ve been a bad fighter and filled with rage. I ve NEVER been to church or Bible study, but now I m seeking. There s something about you guys. You are drawing me here. I really appreciate how you have welcomed me. The inmates were encouraging her and they discovered that they live in the same unit, so a couple of them told her, Hey we live in the same hall! Come see us anytime you want and we ll be sure and look you up! Tracy said, alright, that sounds great! Here is someone else that has stayed away from church and God for over 20 years as she serves her prison sentence, and now she is a part of our study! It s also such a blessing to me to see the other inmates reaching out. Lastly, there s Sandra. Sandra is known by the other inmates as the worst person in the prison. I had no idea who she was, other than thinking by her appearance, I wonder why she is here. I found out later that she is the biggest drug dealer in the prison and leader of a very large prison family. She has scars across her neck and arms from stabbings during fights. One of the scars on her neck is so prominent and thick that I don t know how she survived that cutting. At first when Sandra showed up she kept her head down and wouldn t look at me, even during the lecture. She hid her eyes under her ball cap. She has been to class twice in a row, and this past Monday Sandra thanked me for making her feel welcome and allowing her to be part of the group. She was alert and eyes on me the whole time during the lecture, even moving her head to get a clear view when someone in front of her was blocking her. She had to leave early to report to work so she didn t get to go to small group, but she made sure to be there for as much of the study she could. In fact, she was supposed to leave at 3:00, but didn t leave until almost 3:15! She clearly didn t want to miss anything. Sandra told me earlier that she was trying to get off drugs and get her life right. I told her she was in the right place, because real transformation comes from God alone. He takes our old heart and gives us a brand new one; and it is in reading and studying God s Word that we grow in our transformation and God works in our lives. She seemed to appreciate that. I m wondering what the prison officers are thinking seeing these 3 notorious inmates coming to a Monday afternoon Bible study called Joy of Living with smiles on their faces! All I can do is shake my head and say, Only God. Only God. Please pray for these women, both the ones incarcerated and those who are ministering to them. Also, pray for those who have no one to share the Gospel with them. Ask God to raise up men and women to enter the prisons and jails with the hope and salvation that only Jesus Christ can bring.
