1 Summer 2018 Issue The Spirit and the Bride say, Come. Let the hearer say, Come. Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water. Revelation 22:17 THE SPIRIT AND BRIDE Mission: "The mission of the Catholic Renewal Center is to stir into flame the grace of Pentecost within and beyond the Church, calling forth the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit used to build up the Kingdom. This mission seeks to broaden and deepen the understanding that baptism in the Holy Spirit is the Christian inheritance of all. Dear Friends of the Renewal, As we approach Pentecost on May 20, the Renewal Center offers a wonderful opportunity to prepare as the first disciples did in the First Novena. The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas, since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His Apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Catholic today. To encourage devotion to the Holy Spirit, the Church has granted the following indulgences: "The faithful who devoutly assist at the public novena in honor of the Holy Spirit immediately preceding the Solemn Feast of Pentecost may gain a partial indulgence for themselves or as an offering for the intentions of the faithful departed. I hope that many of you will attend the public novena at the Cardinal Rigali Center or Immaculate Conception Dardenne Prairie. See the information about this on page 7. Fr. Cantalamessa speaks about the Holy Spirit in his book, Come, Creator Spirit, that the opening line of the Veni Creator is a profession of faith in the divine nature of the Holy Spirit as a distinct divine person. All the more beautiful then is what he says: To believe in the Holy Spirit means to adore, to love, to bless and praise, and to thank the Spirit, as we want to do now as we have dared the adventure of a full immersion, of a new baptism in the Spirit, the fountain of blessed water: IN THIS ISSUE: 2 Magnificat and Zechariah Breakfasts 3 Amazed but not Surprised by Anne Hruz 4 People and Prophecies Spring Retreat 5 Retreat Summary by Paula Klump 6 Reflecting on Magnificat 10th Anniversary 7 Points of Interest 8 Calendar at a Glance Thank you, Creator Spirit, because you never cease transforming our chaos into cosmos, because you have come into our minds and filled our hearts with grace. Thank you, because you are our consoler, the Father s supreme gift to us, living water, fire, love and anointing for our soul. Thank you for your infinite gifts and charisms, that you, powerful Finger of God, have given to us, you, the Father s promise to us, fulfilled and ever to be fulfilled. Thank you for the word of fire that never ceases to put on the lips of your prophets, your pastors, your missionaries and of all your people who pray. Thank you for the light of Christ that you have caused to shine in our minds, for his love that you have poured into our hearts, for his healing that you have brought about in our bodies so prone to infirmity. Thank you for being at our side in the struggle, for helping us overcome the enemy, and for the times you have helped us up again when we have fallen. Thank you for being our guide in the difficult choices of our life, and for keeping us safe from evil s allure. And thank you above all for having shown us the Father s face and for teaching us to cry, Abba! Thank you, that you prompt us to proclaim, Jesus is Lord! Thank you that you showed yourself to the Church of the Fathers and show yourself now to the Church of our day, Thank you that you let us see you are the body of unity between Father and Son, the ineffable outflowing of their together- breathing love, the life giving breath and fragrance of divine union that the Father shares with the Son, generating him before ever ages began. Simply because you are Holy Spirit may you be thanked now and for all eternity! May we give praise for the gift of being brought into this current of grace and may we allow it to deepen in us as we prepare for a fresh outpouring this Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit, Come! 3 Amazed but not Surprised: God s Hand at Work in the Healing and Deliverance Ministry Amazed but not surprised. We serve a God who loves to amaze us with His creative power and His everlasting love. Although I am amazed when I reflect on His hand at work in our Healing and Deliverance ministry, I cannot say that I am really surprised. Our Lord is The Healer. When He moves with power, we should be attentive and ready to respond in cooperation with His Spirit. What the Healer has done. The Lord makes His healing felt in a very powerful way in the lives of those who come for ministry to the Renewal Center, where teams of trained prayer ministers work in cooperation with Him to extend His healing touch. Those who come here seek emotional healing, deliverance prayer from the binding lies of the enemy, or the blessing of physical restoration. I like to say that we are a full service healing ministry, bringing whatever healing the Lord wills for those who seek Him. In His wisdom and compassion, the Lord often heals a person in body, mind and spirit. Whatever way He chooses, the Lord leaves His children restored and renewed in Him. Recently, we prayed with someone bound up with destructive issues that plagued his family for generations. His prayer team helped the Lord move him from the hopelessness of believing that he would never enjoy real freedom, to breaking free of that lie in the power of his baptism. This man s renewal was amazing and very real in his day-to-day life and his relationships. We have seen a woman healed by her Lord in the depth of her heart from crushing hurts that had her paralyzed. She is no longer stuck, and now lives in the fullness the Lord intends for her. Lastly, I spoke to a woman who couldn t wait to tell me that through our prayer six months ago, she now is free of all symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. She is pleased to give all the credit to her Lord for this miracle in her life. To be honest, I could write a lengthy book with stories such as these, because there is not a day here at the Center that I do not experience the wonder of God s hand at work in the lives of His people. We know that He is doing His work when we see the peace of Christ coming over the face of someone we are praying with as they realize the power of His healing touch deep within. Can you give witness to the healing you have experienced in some way through ministry at the Renewal Center? If so, please contact me and tell me your story. We would love to share your joy and the power of the Lord in your life. I continue to be amazed, but not really surprised, by the works of our God, because He is always on the move and always at work to renew and restore us. Upcoming Events: Generational Healing The service is a communal prayer, designed to ask the Lord to bring freedom and blessing to families. When negative patterns appear in a family, such as addiction, the pain and destructive effects can be felt for many generations. Our Lord, who makes all things new, can restore the family according to His original design. This service is open to everyone, but please me so that I can send you some information, annehruz@archstl.org. Hispanic Generational Healing will be on May 10. English Generational Healing on June 13. (See page 7 for more details.) Healing Prayer Ministry Workshops at Catholic Renewal Ctr for those interested in praying for the healing of others. Unlike the previous approach to defending Christ s divinity - which had relied on language outside of Scripture - Basil based his case for the divinity of the Holy Spirit on an extraordinarily close reading of the Bible, which makes his work unique both for its theological contributions and its interpretive style. 4 The People and Prophetic Words of the Thirsting for the Spirit Retreat with Fr. Paul Hoesing March 16 and 17, 2018 There are no two snowflakes alike, what a wonder! You are all like snowflakes a marvelous wonder unique and beautiful. You were created in love, to love and for love. You are all equal in my body, in My love. Let my love overflow in your hearts for others, and as snowflakes fall quietly, so will my love in the silence change the hearts of many. My Spirit is like a river. My river flows into every opening. I flow into every opening in your life. I fill the empty spaces. I fill every part of you, bathing you with the fullness of my presence. Drink, my children! Drink! Drink in the richness of My presence. I open the heavens to you. It is here. You have only to ask and receive My presence. This is my desire, to unite you in my presence. Unite yourself to Me. I am peace. I am unity. I am love. Psalm 86:11-12 Teach me, O Lord, Your way that I may walk in your truth. Direct my heart that it may fear your name. I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart. I will glorify Your name forever. Matthew 12:14 For words flow out of what fills the heart, since it is by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. This wind washed over the people beating the drums, and there was silence. A deep, profound silence, and I heard God say, Yes, my people. That is what I desire from you. Listen, listen to me in silence. (The image of Jesus with Most Sacred Heart) My children, My love is as vast and deep as the oceans, but even that (the ocean) is limited. My love extends to the skies and beyond. My Kingdom, the dwelling of all the heavenly host is more vast. My dwelling is in the look, the touch of love, the way that you extend My love, My kingdom to each other. Love, My children, love. That is where I reside. Catholic Renewal Center 1406 S. 5 Listen That You Might Have Life By Paula Klump If I could sum up this retreat in one word, it is silence. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, silence is the absence of sound or noise. This is quite a contrast to the Charismatic Renewal, which is used to exuberant songs of praise, handclapping, and praying in tongues. Silence does not mean the absence of the Holy Spirit. Quite the contrary, silence is indicative of the presence of the Holy Spirit. In silence and quiet the devout soul advances in virtue and learns the hidden truths of Scripture, says Thomas a Kempis. Guard against much talking, advises St. Dorotheus of Gaza, for it puts to flight devout thoughts and recollection in God. St. Maximillian Kolbe declares that, Silence is necessary, and even absolutely necessary. If silence is lacking, then grace is lacking. It is in the still small voice that Isaiah hears God (I Kings 19:11-12). Fr. Paul Hoesing is the Dean of Seminarians for Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. He comes to us from the Omaha Archdiocese where he was a faculty member for the Institute of Priestly Formation and Director of Vocations from 2008 until We were blessed to have him, as he is an expert in the Ignatian spiritual exercises, and he exudes a love of God that casts out all fear. Fr. Hoesing s presentations were divided into the following three topics: a) silence, b) intimacy, c) identity. In the first talk, Fr. Hoesing reminded us that after Jesus was baptized, he was driven by the Holy Spirit into the desert. Lent is a renewal of meeting Jesus in the desert. Lent helps us to be free of things that distract and discourage us so we can meet Jesus. The Spirit drives us into the desert because he wants to meet us in those places that are frightening or forbidding. Silence can be frightening. Our relationship with silence is indicative of our relationship with the Lord. It is in silence that we learn to listen. We listen that we may have life. Intimacy was the theme of the second talk. Silence awakens us to intimacy. Intimacy is being with Jesus at the well just like the Samaritan woman. We are begging for relationship. Our hearts are begging for intimacy with Jesus (Jn 4:15). Sin gets in the way of intimacy and acerbates fear, which also gets in the way of intimacy. Conversion happens because we let Jesus be with us. Holy Spirit moves us to truth. Truth brings intimacy. All intimacy happens in silence. In the third talk, Fr. Hoesing clarifies our identity. It is in silence and intimacy, that we are reminded of our true identity. Baptism gives us our identity as children of the Most High God. Yet, the enemy tries to deceive us. He tells us we are all alone, and there is something wrong with us. Anything that says you are not a beloved child means it is from the enemy. We are never separate The more we contemplate silence, the more available we are to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Intimacy is... I know your thoughts, I know your feelings, I know your desires, and you know mine. from God. The Trinity labors to console us always. We need to receive the good and reject the bad. Jesus thirsts for us. We need to receive, receive, receive His love. When we receive our identity, then our hearts are ready for mission. Our hearts overflow with God s love and spill out to other people. There are no two snowflakes alike. You are unique and beautiful. You are created in love, for love. Let God s love overflow in your hearts to others, so love will change the hearts of many. Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 1 Cor 14:1. That was the focus of an 8-week book study of Damian Stayne s book, Lord, Renew Your Wonders: Spiritual Gifts for Today. It was an anointed time with many of the Lord s gifts being manifested. Many of the 40 participants gained confidence that YES, the Lord can use me for gifts healing, prophecy, discernment, tongues, wisdom, knowledge, faith, miracles that are mentioned in 1 Cor 12: Some experienced gifts for the first time, and others found new expressions of gifts. Many prophetic words were spoken, and gifts of healing of knees, leg and heart took place. We were challenged to look at our beliefs and knowledge of these gifts and allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide. The book study was offered in an evening session and a daytime session facilitated by Kim Stanley and Cheryl Nelson. Catholic Renewal Center 1406 S. Sappington Rd. St. Louis, MO archstl.org/renewal 5
6 Reflecting on... Magnificat St. Louis 10th Anniversary The STL Magnificat Chapter, Our Lady of America, celebrated its 10 th anniversary at a breakfast on Saturday, March 24, Dr. Carol Razza, an international speaker, author and seminary formation advisor, was the special guest speaker. In her witness, Dr. Razza drew from Jeremiah 29:11, God Has a Plan for Your Life. Nearly 180 women from different parishes attended the breakfast at the Cardinal Rigali Center. A ten-minute slide presentation highlighted the events of the last ten years of being sisters, leaders, servers, prayer warriors and friends while celebrating being Mary and Elizabeth to each other at the tables. Dr. Razza led a healing service toward the end of her witness. Confession and prayer teams were available to the women after the breakfast.
