Lee Bloodworth Tuesday 5:30-7:30 p.m. 2 Credit Hours COURSE PURPOSE The purpose of this course is to proclaim the Doctrine of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ (Christology). We will study the glory of Christ as revealed in His names and nature, His states of humiliation and exaltation, His three-fold office, and the doctrine of the His atonement. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. The student will understand the eternal glory of the Son of God. 2. The student will discover Christ as the focal point of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. 3. The student will ponder the mystery of the Incarnation and understand how distortions and denials of the Incarnation not only dishonor God but seek to destroy the gospel. 4. The student will understand the necessity and practical importance of the three offices of Christ as our only Mediator. 5. The student will understand the nature, necessity, extent, and power of the atonement of Christ and itsimportance to evangelism. Required Texts COURSE TEXTS Grudem, Wayne. Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, ISBN (pp ). (102 pp.). NOTE: I will be using Grudem for this Systematic class because his style is very readable. But our later classes will require Berkhof too. If you already have Louis Berkhof s Systematic Theology, you may substitute it for Grudem, which we will also use in later classes. (Grand Rapids: Wm. The Glory of the Redeemer. Orlando: Soli Deo Gloria, n.d. ISBN: (419 pp.). 1. Class attendance is mandatory. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 2. Complete the readings from the required texts on time. 3. Write a 3-5 page personal reflection paper on the importance knowing who Jesus Christ is and the centrality of His saving work today. Your target audience is a Sunday School class or Bible Study group at your church. Explain it in such a way that members in that class would leave knowing what it meant to be created in God s image and its crucial implications for life today. 4. Write a page paper discussing and applying one of the following topics: explore the nature of communion with Christ using his two natures and three offices as a framework; choose one of the early church heresies concerning the Person of Christ and show the importance of a Christian response to it today; consider the nature of the Atonement of Christ and how that determines its extent; or a topic from Systematics III that you would like to pursue and has the approval of the professor. The body of this paper is to be no less than 10 pages and no more than 12 pages typed (double spaced, using 12 pt. Times New Roman font). All papers must be formatted in accordance with Turabian Chicago standards, including the title page. Any paper not conforming to these standards will automatically be dropped one letter grade. This paper should include the following: a. The title page b. A table of contents c. An introduction d. A thesis statement e. The body (10-12 pp.) should be a well-reasoned presentation of the subject, with solid exegetical support for your position. f. A conclusion, containing a summary of the paper s contents

3 g. Footnotes h. A bibliography of at least 10 sources cited (not simply consulted) Note: Papers without footnotes or bibliography will receive a zero. This paper is due the next to the last class. 5. Complete a mid-term exam. 6. Complete a final exam. GRADING Class attendance: over 2 unexcused absences drop the final grade one letter grade. Completion of the Reading and participation in class discussion: 10% The Personal Reflection paper counts for 15% of your grade. The Mid-term Exam makes up 25% of your grade. The Final Exam counts 25% of your grade. The Term Paper counts 25% of your grade. BTS FORMAT AND STYLE STANDARDS All papers must be formatted in accordance with Kate L. Turabian s Manual for Writers, including the title page. Any paper not conforming to these standards will automatically be dropped one letter grade. All course materials must be submitted by the last day of class. Thereafter, course materials may be submitted for up to six (6) weeks after the end of the semester directly to the office of the Registrar with the permission of the professor. If a student submits course materials after the end of the semester but within the six (6) weeks grace period, the student s grade will be lowered by one letter grade. The course materials will not be accepted after the six (6) week grace period and a failing grade will be posted to the student s transcript.
