Paul s letter to the Ephesians reminds us that Christ has been seated at God s right hand in heaven, above every choir of angels. There might be a temptation to stay at an awed distance from Jesus Christ. However, the tone of today s readings is far from that temptation. The tone is exultant and the message is urgent. We are to be his witnesses, and the Gospel describes the first witnesses this way: [W]ith great joy... they were continually in the temple praising God (Luke 24:53). How can we continually praise God? The answer can be found in the second reading, in which Paul prays that God will give us a Spirit of wisdom and revelation in order to know Christ clearly (Ephesians 1:17). We cannot stand at a distance. We are to be enlightened and empowered. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

3 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY - WEEK BY WEEK May 8, 2016 The Ascension of the Lord As the liturgical year--and this Jubilee Year of Mercy--unfold, we reflect on what Jesus' ascension meant for the first disciples and means now for us. Stay in Jerusalem, Jesus had instructed, awaiting "the promise of the Father. In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:4-5, 8). Despite Jesus' absence, they wait "with great joy... continually in the temple praising God" (Luke 24:52-53). But as we join them, waiting and worshiping, the enduring challenge--theirs and ours-- is delivered by "two men in white" (Acts 1:10). In every age, disciples must stop looking at the sky, head down the mountain, and go back into the world, "commissioned," says Pope Francis, "to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel," inviting everyone to find "in our parishes, communities, associations and movements wherever there are Christians...an oasis of mercy" (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Jesus spoke directly and in parables about how our relationships should be with our brothers and sisters in God s family. And today s message emphasizes that this model of behavior, loving one another, is not optional. If we profess to love God we must exhibit love in our encounters with our neighbors. ENCOUNTERING CHRIST UNITED AS CHURCH SENT BY THE SPIRIT The prayers we offer have a great impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. In some situations, the most we can do for someone is to pray for them, especially if they live far away from us. However, prayer is by no means the least of what we do. It is powerful and effective! One way we can pray for those in need is by praying with the Blessed Virgin Mary and asking her to pray for us (MV, no. 24). There are many prayers that are part of the Church s tradition that help us pray with Mary. In living out God s mercy this month, every time you pray one of these prayers, pray it with a particular intention of the compassionate love and mercy for a particular person or situation in your life or for a troubled area of your community. 1. Memorare 2. Angelus 3. Hail Mary 4. The Rosary 5. Queen of Heaven (Regina Caeli) 6. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY! Tis the month of Mary, Blessed Queen of the May, Mother of God we pray you, Bless and protect all mothers, On this their special day. Irish prayer The Gospel of John that is read on the Vigil of Pentecost says that "there was...no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified" (John 7:39). Obviously the Spirit is co eternal with the Father and the Son, so John is trying to get our attention. He means that we could not experience the gifts of the Spirit until Jesus had died and risen from the dead. One way of looking at the Ascension is that Jesus can do much more for us in his glory than he could while on earth. How does this work? It happens in two steps. First, he sends the Holy Spirit to the disciples. Second, the disciples become his witnesses to all the nations. So let's look at the first step. While Jesus walked the earth, he chose to be limited in time and space, so that a few people could get to know and love him. But after his resurrection, he could be more effective by sending his Spirit to all believers. Because he is ascended into glory, he can live in all of us. And that leads to the second step. Before his death, Jesus began to collect a group of followers. Some got to know him more deeply and became disciples. The rest of the followers were merely curious, or attracted by stories of miracles he had performed. But after his ascension the disciples began to experience Jesus in each other. They could not help but be excited about that and spread that excitement to others. May we all experience that presence in the Spirit, seeing Jesus in ourselves and others. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. The Magnificat is a prayer of the Blessed Virgin Mary, taken directly from the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). It was spoken by Mary on the occasion of her visit to her cousin, Elizabeth. In the Gospel scene, Mary greets Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. The baby leaps in Elizabeth s womb at the meeting of the two cousins. When Elizabeth expresses admiration for Mary s faith in God, the Virgin Mary responds as a steward of God s great gift of divine life that is within her. It is the prayer we call the Magnificat and can be prayed as follows: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; and my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid s lowliness; behold, from now on all ages will call me blessed. The mighty One has done great things for me and holy is His name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear Him. He has shown might with His arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen Provided by International Catholic Stewardship Council

Society of St. Vincent de Paul The Ascension of the Lord Today as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension, we are reminded that Christ s saving work on earth continues through his disciples...and now through us. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and into the hearts of those who are poor. The pantry is in need of these items: Dried pinto beans (1lb) Canned peaches (15oz) Mayonnaise (24oz) Vegetable oil (24oz) Jelly (18oz) Hamburger Helper We know what you are going through. Losing someone to the system is very much like a death. We grieve the loss of that person in our daily lives, and we grieve the loss of all our hopes and dreams for a future with that loved one. You do not have to go through this alone. We provide support, education, and advocacy for our members through monthly chapter meetings Texas-wide, quarterly newsletters and access to the executive director of TIFA. Our mission is to educate, advocate and support to break the cycle of crime by strengthening families. We advocate on behalf of our members to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Legislature. We hold monthly meetings in Matthew/Mark every third Thursday from 6-9pm. Ask your questions or state your concerns here, and draw on the collective wisdom of others sharing this journey or who are simply interested in our cause. All are welcome!
