If you are worshipping with us for the first time, we hope that you will find God s presence among us. Your presence with us enriches our vision of the Body of Christ, and we give thanks that you have joined us today. We hope you will sign the register pad when it is passed. Immediately following worship, refreshments are served at Fellowship Hour in Pioneer and Blachly Halls. Just exit the doors to the left of the pulpit and follow the crowd. Enjoy a cup of fair trade coffee. We look forward to greeting you there. If you have questions, please ask. If you have special needs, please let one of the ushers know. Hearing assist devices, wheelchairs, and walkers are available. The elevator provides access to all three floors of the building. Restrooms are located on each floor. Our lower level has wheelchair accessible, all gender restrooms. A diaper changing table is in the Nursery upstairs. Children are welcome in worship (and we know they may need to wiggle!). If you'd prefer, we do offer activities upstairs. Children ages 3 and under are welcome in the Nursery at any time. After the Word for Children, children 3 and up are invited to join us in the theater for Kids Worship - a worship service that mirrors our service in the Sanctuary. Please check out our website for information about Sunday School for children and adults at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays during the school year Assisting in Today s Worship ---- Greeters: Bill & Linda Richter Word for Children: Pastor Caela Fellowship Hour: Harvest Potluck Reading Scripture: Paulicia Williams Sanctuary Flowers: Dona Sidorfsky Lawn Care: Rachel Whetstone 2

Many: We recognize God as the source of all goodness. One: All good gifts come from the Spirit of God: Many: love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness are all of God. One: We come with grateful hearts, not for things, but for who God is. Many: We gather to show our gratitude in song and prayer. (The Presbyterian Church in Canada) Hymn 422 (The New Century Hymnal located in pew backs) Come, O Thankful People Come St. George's Windsor Indicates all who are able, please stand. 4 Listening Word for Children for our Still-speaking God Pastor Caela If your child is going to the Nursery or Kids' Worship for the first time today, please fill out a Child Information Card (located in the back of the pew) and deliver it to one of our staff members upstairs. Scripture Lesson Paulicia Williams Psalm 46 (Page 652 The New Century Hymnal read responsively; all join in singing the refrain as indicated by the symbol R.) Romans 8:14-25 (New Testament page 148 in the pew Bible) The Word in Music Dona Nobis Pacem Sermon Chancel Choir arr. Hopson Rabbi Moti Rieber Executive Director, Kansas Interfaith Action If We Are Children, Then We Are Heirs: The Legacy of Dr. King in the Justice Struggles of Today Responding in hope and thanksgiving Offertory Sentence Prefer to make an electronic contribution? Visit the Giving Station located in the back of the Sanctuary to make a credit or debit card gift or set up recurring contributions from your bank account. MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY Intermezzo, in E-flat Johannes Brahms Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heav nly host: Creator, Christ and Holy Ghost. Amen. PRAYER OF DEDICATION 4
5 PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH You are invited to share your joy or concern aloud. If you would prefer to have Caela read your prayer aloud, please use one of the cards located at the back of the Sanctuary. We respond: Merciful God...hear our prayer. Each week, we hold a few of our members in prayer, working our way through the entire membership over the course of a year. This week, we hold the following people in prayer: Edith Doerry; Andrew Koenecny and Victoria Banks. PRAYER OF JESUS (said in unison) Our Father is the traditional way this prayer begins. For many, however, the traditional language is a hindrance to the intimacy of their relationship with God. You are invited to use whatever name for God you find most meaningful (Mother, Father, Creator, God, Friend, etc,). Together, our names for God will create a beautiful chorus reaching out to the Holy. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Going Forth Hymn 420 (The New Century Hymnal located in pew backs) We Praise You, O God Charge and Benediction to be messengers of good news Kremser Congregational Choral Benediction Let Us Live in the Light (Sung two times) 5

8 8 Take time for Taizé Join us on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for Taizé Worship. Taizé is a 30 minute service of singing, scripture, prayer and silence based on the pattern of worship in use at the ecumenical community at Taizé, France. Harvest Potluck today, following worship The Vitality and Outreach committee is helping us continue our tradition of gathering for a meal where we celebrate all the gifts we've received from God's good earth and give thanks around shared tables. You are invited to join us today following the service. Afterwards, please help with clean up if you are able. Christmas Caroling - Help Needed We are hoping to go Christmas Caroling with our friends from Bethel AME on Saturday, December 17th. We would like to come back to the church after we're done and share a simple soup supper together. If you would be willing to coordinate the meal, please contact the office to let us know. Tasks would include: finding people to bring soup, bread, anything else you'd like us to provide; finding helpers for set up and clean up; supervising the serving and clean up. Thanks for considering it! Volunteers Needed - to help with worship, host fellowship hour, or serve at Second Helping. Sign up is easy! A sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin board outside the kitchen, or go online to Signupgenius.com and search for fccvolunteers. If you are interested in a specific volunteer opportunity but want more information, contact office@uccmanhattan.org. Alternatively, you can sign up at the church website: uccmanhattan.org/sign-ups. World AIDS Day Service of Remembrance and Hope - Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7pm We are honored to host Manhattan's service for World AIDS Day again this year. The service will feature music, reflection, a candlelighting ceremony. A great opportunity to slow down, remember those we love and light a candle in the darkness for HOPE. We'll have a brief reception with snacks and warm beverages after the service. Pastor Caela requests assistance with the reception. If you are able to help provide some snacks or be present to serve them an offer our guests hospitality, please contact the church office.
9 Ready to Become a Member? - On December 11th, we will welcome a new group of members who desire to join with us in covenant as the people of First Congregational United Church of Christ. If you are interested in membership and haven't yet had a chance to sit down with Pastor Caela to talk about what membership means and have your questions answered, please contact her (pastor@uccmanhattan.org) to set up an appointment. You can also learn more and fill out a new member information form at Stand in solidarity with the resistance of Native Americans in North Dakota to the Dakota Access Pipeline - For the crime of defending their lands and waters - not to mention the climate of all of us -- the camp at Standing Rock has been met with militarized policing in the service of private gain. How to take action with #StandingRock: Call the White House ( ), the Army Corps of Engineers ( ), North Dakota Governor Dalrymple ( ) and your congressional representatives and senators; contribute to Legal Defense Fund ( hold in prayer the Standing Rock Water Protectors. This information is from Kansas Interfaith Action (KIFA). Upcoming Adult Education Opportunities November 27 - December 18 Dale Stearns will lead our Advent book study. Awaiting the Already: An Advent Journey through the Gospels takes us on a tour through the Gospel narratives, showing us what parts of the Christmas story come from which Gospel, and helps us to recognize that each Gospel writer invites us to encounter a fresh experience of the birth of Christ. Saturday, November 26 9:00 a.m. Decorate the church for Advent/Christmas Board of Deacon s would like to invite anyone to help decorate the sanctuary, lobby and Pioneer/Blachly Halls for Advent/Christmas on Saturday, November 26 at 9:00 a.m. The more hands to help the quicker the decorating gets done. The Board of Deacons is a small but mighty group of dedicated individuals whose responsibility is the worship life of our congregation. Please join them for some fun and bonding. Juice, donuts, coffee (with fun creamers!) will be served. 9
10 $hop $mart Grocery Certificates - It s the easy way to make a donation to the Church. Purchase your HyVee gift card after worship to use when you buy groceries. Buy them at face value, spend them like cash, and the church receives a donation. Thanksgiving Meal - This year, in addition to the meal provided at noon at Old Chicago in Colbert Hills, the area churches are joining forces to serve an evening Thanksgiving dinner at First Lutheran during its regular meal time on Thursday, November 24. Many of the guests who attend First Suppers and the other community meals are not able to get to Colbert Hills and would otherwise be without a substantial meal until Friday night. Volunteers are sought to help with food preparation, serving, hospitality, and clean up. If you don t have plans on Thanksgiving evening, please consider joining the team! There will be a team meeting in the next week, so contact First Lutheran Church as soon as possible if you would be available on Thanksgiving night. Please call Kathryn or Kelly at First Lutheran 10
