2 MISSION STATEMENT We, the Seventh-day Adventist Church exist to preach the gospel to prepare the people in Peninsular Malaysia for Jesus Christ s second coming, by ministering to their physical, mental, social and spiritual needs through in-reach and outreach programmes of the Church. VISION STATEMENT To prepare our members for Jesus soon return and with united spirit evangelize the whole of Peninsular Malaysia. We are a year close r to the return of our Lord Jesus. This year, the world church has chosen the theme Revival & the Prophetic Truth. Knowing and accepting the prophetic truth is essential for everyone who is waiting for the soon return of our Lord. The perils of the last days are upon us, and in our work we are to warn the people of the danger they are in. Let not the solemn scenes which prophecy has revealed be left untouched. If our people were half awake, if they realized the nearness of the events portrayed in the Revelation, a reformation would be wrought in our churches, and many more would believe the message. {Ev. 95.}. We believe that both Daniel and Revelation in the Bible have the same authority as other books in the Bible. The prophetic truth in these two books is from God. We have the responsibility to share it to the world. However, there are Christian leaders teaching that the prophetic books were sealed, and were not to be understood. It was true that a portion of the book Daniel was sealed (Dan. 8:26; 2:, 9), but not the book Revelation. All the teachings in Revelation are to be understood. That is the reason its title is Revelation, messages to be revealed. Moreover, Dan. 2:, 9 emphatically mentioned that the sealed portion of the book would be revealed, to be made known at the end time. Let Daniel speak, let the Revelation speak, and tell what truth is. But whatever phase of the subject is presented, uplift Jesus as the center of all hope, the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright and morning Star. -- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 8. As we study Revelation Chapter Ten together with Daniel Chapter Eight, we understand that the sealed portion of Daniel was the 23 days prophecy as mentioned in Daniel 8:. In late Eighteen and early Nineteen Century, groups of Christian in a few European countries, Middle East, North America and South America, begun to preach about the advent message based on Daniel chapter 8 and 9. Furthermore, the great disappointment experience of the Adventist Movement in North America was predicted about 7 years ago. 7 years after the great disappointment experience, we are still preaching the advent message because Rev. : says you mus t prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings. Preaching the eternal gospel is the mission of the remnants until Jesus Christ returns. (Rev. : 6 ). Ministers should present the sure word of prophecy as the foundation of the faith of Seventh-day Adventists. The prophecies of Daniel and Revelation should be carefully studied, and in connection with them the words, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. {Ev 96.2}. I would like to appeal to our brothers and sisters in Christ to spend time to study both Daniel and Revelation in 2 to be affi rmed and blessed by the prophetic truth in these two books. (Rev. :3) Youth, Pathfinder, AMiCUS James Edward

14 WHAT IF YOUR JOB TITLE WAS CHANGED TO WHY I M GLAD I M AN ADVENTIST. SERVANT? COMPLAINERS CAN TAKE A CUE FROM THIS AIRLINE PILOT by Laura Samano/ANN: Two years ago I was at the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, waiting for my plane home to Baltimore, Maryland, when an announcer came over the public address system informing us the airport had experienced a power outage. It was humid and 90 unsaved, would be left behind. degrees Fahrenheit outside. The sun hit the window behind me as if it had nowhere else to shine. The jetway that should have led us from the departure gate to the plane was not working. The ground personnel told us the airport was using mobile staircases to help passengers board planes. But the airport didn t have enough staircases for every plane so we had to wait our turn. I was sitting between two ladies who complained about the weather, how that in that airport things always went wrong, and anything else they could think of. The ground personnel couldn t give us a specific time of departure, which gave my seatmates another reason to complain. Nearly three hours after the initial power outage announcement, ground personnel told us we could board. So we exited the gate area by walking down a stairway and headed toward the mobile staircase that would lead us up into the plane. As I walked toward the plane, I noticed a man walking up and down the stairs. I wondered what was wrong with him. We all wanted to go home and he was just delaying our departure. I walked up the stairs and noticed the sweat on the man s face and shirt. It seemed like every step he took added a wrinkle to his forehead. The man was carrying passengers luggage. Then I noticed who he was our pilot. This pilot went above and beyond just flying planes. He made passengers more comfortable at the cost of his own comfort. I didn t hear anyone complain because they didn t have to carry their own luggage. Nobody asked him to help, and I m sure he didn t get paid more for doing it. Days later I reflected: What would happen if instead of us having the title of captain, copilot, editor, administrative assistant, director or president we had the title of servant. Would we behave the same way? The kingdom of God calls us to be servants, not masters. Jesus said, Whoever wants to be great must serve others. Whoever wants to be first must be last. I hope every person we talk to will perceive our desire to serve him or her, and I pray that when God says to us, Whom shall I send and who will go for us? that each of us will say, Here I am Lord, send me. OUR UNDERSTANDING OF A LOVING GOD; EMERGING HEALTH PRINCIPLES HAVE BEEN OUR TEACHING ALL ALONG by Cliff Goldstein/ANN: The other day I was listening on the car radio to a Sunday preacher talk about lastday events. Any day now, he warned, faithful Christians would raptured; that is, instantly transported to heaven, leaving only a pile of clothes where they were standing a moment before. Just like that they would disappear, while everyone else, the With all these faithful Christians having been supernaturally taken away, the unsaved would have another chance to accept Jesus, which they better do soon because the antichrist, perhaps a Syrian Jew, would bring about a sevenyear period of tribulation before the earthly thousand years of peace would begin. At one point, I thought, I am so thankful to be an Adventist, so thankful that whatever unanswered questions remain about our understanding of last day events, it doesn t include the saints vanishing into thin air, only their clothes remaining. I m so thankful, too, to be an Adventist because it amazes me how many Christians believe that God will burn the lost in hell for eternity. It is astonishing to read some very bright Christians try to justify the idea that the unsaved deserve to be suffering torture in hell for billions of eons, and that such a fate is exactly what a loving God would do. How grateful I am to be an Adventist with our understanding of the fate of the lost. On a similar note, I m so thankful to be an Adventist because our beliefs about death protect us from every kind of deception regarding the state of the dead. Many people have read about near death experiences, in which clinically dead people come back to life and tell fantastic stories about floating in a misty realm where they meet deceased friends and relatives who seem to be having a grand ol time of it, even if many had never professed Jesus. The sad thing is, Christians think that these accounts are proof that the dead go straight to heaven. What a powerful deception, one that we, as Adventists, never have to fall for. Plus, as I get older, I am so thankful for what Adventism has taught me about health. Time and again, for just about every disease and ailment, medical science tells us that the best way to avoid these diseases is to eat certain foods and avoid others. And in just about every case, it s pretty much the diet that Adventists have been recommending for more than 150 years: avoid fat, grease, sugar and red meats, and eat more fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables. Don t smoke and don t drink. And get plenty of sleep and exercise. When I read these reports I think I am reading excerpts from Adventist Church cofounder Ellen White s Counselson Diets and Foods. And believe me, at 57 years old, I am happy to have any help on health that I can. For these reasons, and more, I am so thankful to be a Seventhday Adventist. Sure, we re not perfect, and the church isn t perfect, and I m certainly not judging anyone who believes differently. That s not my point. My point is that I m thankful for the things God has revealed to us. So thankful that it makes me, more than ever, want to share these blessings with others.

15 *MENTAL HEALTH. WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH? The Malaysian Mental Health Association explains, that mental health is a feeling of well-being, happiness, the ability to cope with life s challenges, to accept others and most of all, to have a positive attitude towards oneself. Mentally healthy people trust others and enjoy being part of a group as well as being on their own. For them, life is meaningful. However, there is no line that neatly divides the mentally healthy from the unhealthy. Some characteristics of mentally healthy people:-- - They feel good about themselves. - Are able to deal with most situations. - Are able to take pleasure in simple, everyday things. - Are able to handle life s disappointments. - Have self-respect. - Neither under-estimate nor overestimate their abilities. - They feel comfortable with other people. - Are able to give love to others. - Have lasting personal relationships. - Respect the many differences they find in other people. - Are able to feel they are part of a group. - Do not take advantage of others nor allow others to take advantage of them. - They are able to meet the demands of life. - Set realistic goals for themselves. - Are able to make their own decisions. - Accept their responsibilities. - Plan ahead and look forward to the future. - Welcome new experiences and ideas. - Are satisfied in putting their best effort into what they do. WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS? Many people have misunderstood the term mental illness. More often, it has been seen as possession of evil spirits, a moral weakness or a punishment from a higher being. Mental illness is a disturbance in the mind which can affect thinking, feeling, and behaviour that may affect one s daily functioning. Most mental illness can be treated so that the person can enjoy good health. What causes mental illness is unclear, although it is often preceded by emotional stress and difficulty coping with conflict or adjusting to traumatic events. Other factors may involve biochemical imbalance, deterioration by the presence of at least five of the following nine symptoms for at least two weeks in adults or one week in children or adolescents:-- -- A depressed mood during most of the day, particularly in the morning. -- Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day. -- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day. -- Impaired concentration, indecisiveness. -- Insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day. -- Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day. -- Recurring thoughts of death or suicide (not just fearing death). -- A sense of restlessness, or being slowed down. WARNING SIGNS OF DEPRESSION (sadness is an emotion, whereas depression is an illness). 1. Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings. Blank stares, loss of interest in life, an inability to feel or express happiness or other emotions. Or the person may report just feeling "empty" or "numb." 2. Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or helplessness. The person seems unable to see any positive flip side to things. 3. Frequent crying episodes. The crying may not seem to have a direct or obvious trigger; sobs often come "out of nowhere. But it's not normal to cry every day (though the depressed person may not realize this). 4. Increased agitation and restlessness. The person may seem unable to relax, more irritable than usual, quicker to anger, full of restless energy, seldom calm. Look for pacing, lashing out at others, frequent standing up and sitting back down. 5. Fatigue and decreased energy. The person may complain of having no energy, of feeling unproductive, or of "slowing down." 6. Loss of interest in activities or hobbies that were once pleasurable. This is one of the single most telling symptoms of depression. The person no longer takes pleasure in things that once brought enjoyment, whether the lives of children or grandchildren, a hobby or craft, exercise, cooking, book club, watching sports -- or anything. The person may begin to decline invitations, refuse to go out, not want to see friends or family. 7. Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions. Various mental slips may become obvious, such as forgetting appointments and errands, making checkbook errors, misplacing objects, forgetting names, avoiding making plans, postponing decisions or deferring them to others.. Sleeping too much or not enough. Regular sleep routines are disrupted; staying up too late or going to bed unusually early; being unable to awaken on time; complaining about a poor night's sleep; sleeping long hours but fitfully -- so the person never feels rested; excessive napping by day.. Poor appetite or overeating. Missed meals, picking at food (especially if this is a change for the person), lying about food intake; loss of interest even in formerly favourite foods, mindless munching and other mindless eating, throwing up after eating; weight gain or weight loss. 10. Expressing thoughts of dying or suicide. Depression is one of the conditions most commonly associated with suicide. It begins to seem like a logical way to end the pain and suffering. 11. Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that don't ease with treatment. Depression is stressful. The physical effects of chronic stress, added to poor self-care brought on by changes in energy levels, sleep, and appetite, can cause an array of health problems. *For further information and sources of this article, please refer to
