3 Reflections from Fr. David Often in these reflections I have written of my keen interest in the news and how I try to pay attention to events of the day. But I have decided to turn off the news for a few days. It used to be that the depths of summer were called silly days in the news industry...a time of the year when there was, generally, not a lot going on and not a lot to report. Well...there is a whole lot of silliness in the news going on these days in the depths of winter. And that silliness has me turning away from the news. Why? I don t care if Beyoncé lip-synched the National Anthem at the Inauguration ceremony! News and sports reporters who now have to come up with some new breaking news several times over the course of a 24-hour period are put in the position of having to say something, regardless of whether or not we need to know it or even need to hear them going on and on about it. When did it become the job of news or sports reporters of editorial commentators to parse almost every word that a politician or athlete speaks into a microphone and endlessly speculate about what they said, offer their suggestions for what that person should have said or interview a vast array of people to ask their opinion of what was said by someone else? But that s not all...they want to hear our opinion about all of this, too! We are invited to comment via an , a text message, a tweet, a facebook posting...even an old fashioned phone call! I don t care why The First Lady rolled her eyes over a comment shared by the President and the Speaker of the House during the Inauguration luncheon in the Capitol! I am sick and tired of speculation regarding the pathetic situation faced by Manti T eo and his hoax of a girlfriend! Years ago people and pundits in this nation used to amuse themselves over the machinations of what used to be called Kremlin Watchers : these were people who would analyze photographs of leaders of the Soviet Union when they gathered at big state events in order to establish what was going on in the Politburo. This analysis was based on who was standing next to whom, who got moved up or down a few places, who was standing closest to the Party Chairman, who was absent, who was smiling, who was not, was someone wearing a coat...did this mean they were ill, etc. etc. etc. Our news and sports reporters have, it seems to me, become poorer informers of the public about essential issues of the day and rather have degenerated into the American version of Kremlin Watchers. Ugh! Who cares?!?! It s just another form of gossip...which is a sin! This drives me so crazy that I usually remind whoever is around me that I don t watch TV to find out what other people think. Indeed, I get so frustrated that sometimes I don t even care about what I think!!! I just want some news and great sports reporting and highlights. Thank goodness there are many preferable alternatives to this silly waste of the precious gift of time: read a good book, spend time in prayer ( O God, please save your people from the 24-hour news cycle! ), spend time with family or friends, visit the sick, help someone in need, go to Adoration We need to put down the remote, give control of our time to the Lord and let him push the buttons that control our time and direct our eyes and ears to what he wants us to see and hear. He knows everything; thank God we don t have to! Is there anyone who ever lived whose dying words were, I wish I had watched more TV? But did you hear the latest about Kim and Kanye? 6 Our Family in Faith The 2013 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Is Underway The Lord Sustains His People The 2013 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal begins with a mailing that many of our parishioners have received or will soon receive. This is a mailing from Bishop Conlon asking for a pledge to the 2013 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. The Appeal not only funds many of the operations of the diocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. For example, funds support Those who direct and are a part of our Religious Ed and Confirmation programs Our Seminarians and Deacons to be prepared and formed for ministry Programs for leadership training for our High School Youth and Young Adult programs The Totus Tuus program we have each summer Missions to Bolivia and the Philippines to which we send parishioners every year. This year, the theme of the Appeal is The Lord Sustains His People. The Lord sustains each of us in many ways. His life, death and resurrection were all gifts to each of us. He gives us all that we have. He gave us our Church. That Church, through our parish, our diocese, and throughout the world offers us not only spiritual but many other forms of sustenance. God never forgets us. Even when we believe that our successes are self-made, it is His love that sustains each of us. He is always giving to us. His grace is always there for us. One way that we can show our gratitude is by offering our generous financial support to our parish and to our diocese and to the Church throughout the world. The gifts we give enable ministries, education, and services that touch thousands of lives. Our parish goal is $187,666. With your support, we can reach and exceed this goal. Please answer Bishop Conlon s request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be paid in 10 monthly installments. Thank you in advance for your support. Do Your Shopping with Manna Today! However, to derive profit from such a great promise of Our Lady, the devotion must be properly understood and duly performed. The requirements as stipulated by Our Lady are, on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months: Confession, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, and to do all these things in the spirit of reparation to my Immaculate Heart. Please join us for 7:30 a.m. Mass. The recitation of the Rosary will immediately follow in the Church. Page 8 One Family in Faith Making Christ Known January 27, 2013

Joseph Ferrari (Deacon Candidate) Prayer for Vocations Pope John Paul II Lord Jesus, as you once called the first disciples to make them fishers of men, let your sweet invitation continue to resound: Come, follow me! Give young men and women the grace of responding quickly to your voice. Support our bishops, priests and consecrated people in their apostolic labor. Grant perseverance to our seminarians and to all those who are carrying out the ideal of a life totally consecrated to your service. Awaken in our community a missionary eagerness. Lord, send workers to your harvest and do not allow humanity to be lost for the lack of pastors, missionaries and people dedicated to the cause of the Gospel. Mary, Mother of the Church, the model of every vocation, help us to say Yes to the Lord who calls us to cooperate in the divine plan of salvation. Amen. For an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, especially in the Diocese of Joliet, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. Word of Life One of the fundamental human rights, also with reference to international peace, is the right of individuals and communities to religious freedom. At this stage in history, it is becoming increasingly important to promote this right not only from the negative point of view, as freedom from for example, obligations or limitations involving the freedom to choose one s religion but also from the positive point of view, in its various expressions, as freedom for for example, bearing witness to one s religion, making its teachings known, engaging in activities in the educational, benevolent and charitable fields which permit the practice of religious precepts.
