1 What is Baptism? LEADER S GUIDE 4th- Lesson Overview Today, we re going to talk about water baptism. Have you ever heard that word before? Baptism is a symbol that represents what Jesus did for us and what it means for our lives. The Bible says that we all have a sin problem that breaks our relationship with God. So, Jesus came to fix the problem by dying on the cross for us. His death on the cross took care of our sin problem. And, Jesus rose again so that we could live a new life in him. So, when we get baptized, we go into the water, representing death to sin and come out of the water forgiven and free to live a new life in Jesus. And, here s one more thing to know about baptism. Jesus tells his followers to get baptized as a way to tell others that we belong to Jesus. So, if you ve put your trust in Jesus, you should talk to your parents about getting baptized. Big Idea Baptism is a symbol for what Jesus did for us. Key Question Why should we get baptized? Memory Verse Romans 6:4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. Classroom Agenda 1. (5 min) PLAY: Let kids start working on Activity Page # (5 min) WARM UP: Have you ever seen someone get baptized? What was it like? (Tip: Some people get baptized in a church service and others choose to do it in a river or swimming pool. The location doesn t matter; Being dunked in water is what matters. ) 3. (5 min) PREVIEW: Write out the Big Idea, Memory Verse, and Key Question on a whiteboard. Have the kids copy it down on Activity Page #1 (if applicable). 4. (3 min) KQ: Answer the Key Question. (Answer: Because Jesus told us to do it. (Jesus wants us to get baptized as a way to tell our friends and family that we've given our hearts to Jesus. It s a great way to explain what Jesus did for all of us when we describe what baptism means.) Bonus Questions: What does baptism mean? Why should we get baptized? 4-: Who would you invite to your baptism? 7. (5 min) EXPLORE: Read Colossians 2:12. What does going into the water mean? What does it mean when we come out of the water? (Answer: Going into the water means we re dying to our sinful ways, that we re identifying with Jesus and his death on the cross to pay for our sins. Coming out of the water means we have a new life in Jesus, identifying with Jesus when he was raised from the dead. Because of Jesus, we can live a new life where we can say, No to sin and Yes to honoring Jesus) 8. (10 min) PLAY: Choose a group activity from Activity Page #2. 9. (5 min) CLOSE: Share prayer requests and pray as a class. Encourage kids to use the Family Guide at home with their parents - and remind them to go online to pursuegod.org/kids to find this week s lesson video. 1

2 ACTIVITY PAGE #2 Teacher instructions: Choose an activity for your classroom. OPTION 1:ERASE THE VERSE GAME Instructions: Write the memory verse on the whiteboard, large enough for the class to read and with some space in between words. Say the verse as a class. Then invite a kid to come up and erase a word. See if the class can say the verse with that word missing. Continue having kids come up and erase a word and have the class try to say the verse each time. Continue until every word is erased. See if the class can say the verse totally by memory. Supplies needed: Whiteboard and marker Bonus Activity: Find the book Have the class divide into pairs. Give each pair a Bible. Have them race to find the books below. First to find has to say if it s in the OT or NT. Books: 1 Timothy, Proverbs, Mark OPTION 2:MEMORY VERSE GAME Instructions: Have kids divide into groups of 4. Give each group a set of Memory verse words (page 5). Have kids put the words face down on the floor. When you say, Go!, have kids race to get the words int he correct order to say the memory verse. First group to do it correctly, wins. Supplies needed: Memory verse words (pg. 5, precut, 1 set per group) Bonus Activity: Bible Hangman Words or phrases: Baptism, Symbol, Jesus 2
