1 Vol. 8 No. 4 Fall 2012 Sister Laurentia and her Golden Jubilee as a Sister of Mercy By Mary Jane Zust With Eileen Buehrle There was joy that Saturday in the little village of Longwood, County Meath, as the Cusack family welcomed the birth of Nuala, their third child. The family could not have foreseen the immeasurable joy their little Nuala, or Sister Laurentia as we know her, was to bring to people of Ireland and to people photo by Don Dinkelkamp Celebrating with Sister Laurentia are Holy Infant s Pastor Fr. Edward Stanger, retired pastor of Holy Infant Monsignor Thomas Dempsey and Holy Infant School Principal Sister Rosario. of our country. And there was joy that Friday in the city of Ballwin many years later, as the Holy Infant Parish welcomed the opportunity to celebrate two important milestones in the life of its much loved sixth grade teacher, Sister Laurentia; her Golden Jubilee for fifty years of faithful service as a Sister of Mercy, and her 30 years of teaching at Holy Infant. Children have always been closest to Sister Laurentia s heart, so it was fitting that the celebrations should begin with their special school Mass. Rampant joy was visible through that Mass on Friday morning, September 21, as each class brought its gifts and proudly gave them to Sister at her honored place at the altar. The children sang special songs, brought pictures, banners, bouquets of flowers and many small gift bags. It was abundantly clear that the children love Sister dearly, and their excellent behavior at the exciting and joyous occasion was itself a gift of respect for their beloved Sister Laurentia. Father Stanger sang his beautiful Irish blessing as his gift to Sister. Fredbird made a surprise visit which brought applause and hilarity from the students. A day to remember! After Mass, the Jubilee celebration continued in the upper cafeteria that was fashioned into a lovely golden dining room for Sister Laurentia. Attending the celebration, where her sister Gabrielle and husband Eric, her sister Linda and husband Tim, her nephew Laurence, the teachers, staff, family, priests and friends. As breakfast was being served, the teachers, staff, priests and friends entertained the audience with a video of Sister s life, skits, songs, and stories (Irish ones, of course), and an Irish song by Sister s nephew, Laurence. The Jubilee Mass for the entire parish was held on Sunday, September 23, amid a scene of flowers, joy, love and respect for Sister Laurentia. Father Stanger in golden vestments shared the sanctuary area with many other priests and deacons. Sister s nephew, Laurence, sang a prelude before Mass, My Heavenly Father Watches over Me, and a (Continued on page 2)

The choir and cantor, Elena Arredondo, brought great solemnity to the liturgy. Sister was invited to the altar where she renewed the same vows of Profession that she had made fifty years before. Father Stanger thanked her for her 30 years of joy and service to Holy Infant and once again, sang an Irish blessing for her. The long and enthusiastic applause from the audience was an indication of their respect and admiration for Sister Laurentia. A reception after Mass gave parishioners an opportunity to personally express their thanks and appreciation to her.... When the festivities had ended, family and friends returned to their homes, Sister Laurentia sat alone and relaxed in her arm chair, drowsily reliving the life-journey of a little Irish farm girl. Sister sees a little girl (herself) coming home from her three-room schoolhouse, her mother asking the same question every school day. Any slaps? One slap at school merits two slaps at home. No questions asked. The same question for her two brothers and sisters. Now the little girl is in the 6 th grade. Missionaries come to school; she thinks, I d like to be a nun too. It s just one quick thought, that s all. Sister sees herself now in high school in Navan, and she recalls the idea of being a nun becoming more and more powerful. She talks it over with her parents; she prays, finishes high school, makes her decision and joins the Sisters of Mercy convent in Navan. HOLY INFANT S WORDS AND WORKS In 1962, a great day professing her first vows. In 1965, she felt ready and professed her final vows. For eleven years, Sister Lurentia worked hard teaching grades Kindergarten through grade 6 in Ireland. Sister does not like to dwell on the first year of her assignment in Jacksonville, Florida. She was young, suffered bitterly from homesickness and the heat, the bare terrain, the absence of season change, the almost complete lack of Catholic Churches in that area and the vast diversity of the children. She remembers how they all conspired to make that first year a painful cross. But she soon began to love the children and taught in Jacksonville for eight years. Sister Laurentia was delighted with her assignment to St. Louis in What a first encounter at the airport that was with a young priest named Timothy Dolan! The two soon became good friends and Sister has witnessed many of Cardinal Dolan s milestone events. Sister was enchanted with St. Louis so much like Ireland in climate and in the number of Catholic Churches. She loves the home at Holy Infant she shares with her dear friend, Sister Rosario, enjoys puttering in their small garden, cooking and watching exciting St. Louis Cardinals games. Sister stirs in her arm chair. That was quite a journey for an Irish farm girl! It s time now to get back to work - to doing what she loves best teaching 6 th grade. Sister Laurentia wants to thank the whole Holy Infant Parish for the time and effort, the warmth and love that made her 50 th Jubilee and 30 th Anniversary so memorable. The celebration was truly a thing of beauty and will be Sister s treasured memory, a joy forever. 3 HOLY INFANT S WORDS AND WORKS PAGE 3 Apostolate for Family Consecration Submitted By Ryan Boerner - Holy Infant 8th grader and member of Holy Infant Troop 627 Apostolate for Family Consecration, or Family Apostolate, is a great, Catholic way to grow deeper in your faith. Family Apostolate is great for the entire family. We meet weekly, right now on Thursday nights from 7:00 pm till 8:30 pm. You can bring your kids and babies are certainly allowed. The kids submitted photo can play in the living room or outside if it s not too cold. Or, they can do homework together. Parents usually watch a video about saints, Theology of the Body, scripture study, or encyclical letters. Then the parents discuss the video together. After the program, the kids come back in the room and all pray a rosary together. During last week s Family Apostolate, we watched Part 1 of a video about Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, who is soon to be canonized this October. Kateri Tekakwitha was a Mohawk Indian and she lived 331 years ago. She helped 4,000 Native Americans come together in peace and these meetings are still going on today. The people discussing Kateri Tekakwitha were Father Thomas J. Egan, Father Henri Bechard, S.J. Vice Postulator of cause of sainthood of Kateri, and Monsignor Paul A. Lenz of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Affairs. Family Apostolate, based in Bloomingdale, Ohio, was started by Jerry and Gwen Coniker in It soon developed into an international organization. Family Apostolate offers a family-based video library and diverse multimedia resources that serve parishes, organizations, and other movements in a very special way. All video and communications materials feature prominent teachers of the faith such as Cardinal Francis Arinze, Cardinal Francis Stafford, Blessed Mother Teresa and many others. The video programs are designed to: Deepen knowledge of the truths of the faith and the relationship with each person in the Holy Trinity Encourage frequent and more reverent reception of the Sacraments, and Provide an easy way to share the faith and reach out to others. As a result, everyone can learn the truth of Catholic teachings that will make them free and better able to serve the Church and help save souls. Family Apostolate started in Holy Infant in 1988 thanks to Mrs. Cheri Scheu and Monsignor Buchheit. It was started to honor the requests the Blessed Mother made at Fatima. If you have any questions about Family Apostolate, or would like more information, call any of these numbers: (Mrs. Cheri Scheu), (Mrs. Suzie Cupps), or (Mrs. Rebecca Boerner). If you still feel you need more information you can visit I highly suggest that you do go to Family Apostolate. I have been going since as long as I can remember and it has helped me in my religious life so much. (Ryan has submitted this article as a requirement of the Pope Pius XII Award, which is the highest religious award in Boy Scouting.) 4 PAGE 4 HOLY INFANT S WORDS AND WORKS We Are Alive In Christ Holy Infant s Parish School of Religion By Patricia Foley With JoAnn Dinkelkamp In this article, we are going to focus on our Parish School of Religion Program (PSR) a new hat for Patricia this year! This program was run for many years by Deacon Ken Clemens. Patricia Foley came to Holy Infant from Dallas, Texas via Ireland to take the position as Director of Religious Education in She found in Holy Infant a community rich with parishioners excited about finding new ways to live their faith. Patricia, with the help of others within the parish, revamped existing programs and established several new ministries. Patricia will tell you her story about the Holy Infant PSR ministry. We currently have 526 students in our PSR Program who come every Monday, either at 4:30 or 6:30 pm. There are also 31 children homeschooled by parents who are given the materials and the training to accomplish the same goals as the PSR students. All students are taught to appreciate the rich tradition of our Catholic faith and encouraged to develop a personal relationship with Christ. There are 36 teachers, called Catechists, in our Parish School of Religion who come from various walks of life; but all possess a common desire to share their faith with the youth of today and the Church of tomorrow. Some are teachers from Holy Infant Day School and many, like Sr. Rosario, our school principal, and Sr. Laurentia, have taught PSR classes for over 40 years. Catechists come from the Rockwood and Parkway School Districts, Villa Duchesne, Lafayette Christian Academy, a professor from St Louis University, Deacon Ken Clemens, parishioners, and parents. Through creative catechesis, a love of Jesus and the children they teach, our Catechists make every Monday evening a time of grace filled moments. It s good for children to recognize the importance of living their faith on a daily basis, to understand that faith is more than just a bunch of memorized facts, but something that s living and breathing. Faith has to be put into action and reaching out to the poor and others in need in our local and global community does just that. During our first semester, we are again collecting canned goods for St. Wenceslaus Food pantry which will be blessed at our Thanksgiving Mass. Some families will pack shelves at the center. We are also doing some global outreach as we participate in a new project called Operation Christmas Child. This simple project encourages families to fill a shoe box for a boy or girl with little gifts, toiletries and school items that will then be sent to over 131 different countries in the world. We hope to make a difference in a child s life, one shoebox at a time. The second semester will be hands on ministry with St. Louis area organizations like Spensa, Our Lady s Inn, The Linus Project, Karen House and many more. A faith lived indeed! Prayer and worship is also a huge part of our program. Our priests play a vital part of the PSR program and are regularly seen walking the hallowed halls of Holy Infant. They take our students on Church tours, prepare them for sacraments, renew baptismal promises, stage mock baptisms, chat with students in their classrooms, and any number of other activities. We attend Mass which is planned by the students, and Reconciliation regularly. Praise and worship has been added on the last Monday of every month led by Mark Pilkenton at 4:30 pm and Kathy and Jim Bednarek and friends at the 6:30 pm session. We invite all parents to attend with us. We also plan to provide Advent and Lenten evenings for parents this year while their children attend class. Behind every dynamic program is a talented organizer, and administrative assistant Mary Willett is a saving grace. Mary attended Holy Infant Grade School herself, and she and her husband, Mark, sent (Continued on page 5)

5 HOLY INFANT S WORDS AND WORKS (Parish School of Religion... continued from page 4) their three children to Holy Infant School as well. Mary has been working in the PSR office for fifteen wonderful years. She feels blessed to work with such a great group of people at Holy Infant and to be a part of spreading the love of Jesus to the PSR students. A successful Parish program bears fruit when it is embraced by the entire parish community. Our Parish School of Religion is just that, a vibrant part of the parish, led by faith filled passionate people striving daily to live their faith. We are blessed at Holy Infant!! My mom and I constantly argue about the importance of going to Mass as a family. I hate missing Sunday noon Mass at Holy Infant, but why? The music is better; I like the people I'm sitting next to better. I feel more comfortable in a church I have grown up in. But, if I can quote my role model here for a second, Pope Benedict XVI, this world offers great comfort, but we were not made for comfort, we were made for greatness. There is something powerful about sacrifice. Last week, when I was given the option to go to Sunday noon Mass by myself, it meant more to me and my family to know I was sacrificing something I loved and was comfortable to me for what was best for my family. It's safe to assume people get more pumped for Sunday football than Sunday Mass. We love to tailgate but would you ever go to Mass early? We paint our faces and buy sports apparel, but are you willing to put in 15 more minutes of effort to change out of sweats? How important is it to you to dress in good taste? Touchdowns, you high five complete strangers, but do you even turn around at the sign of peace? A mature faith knows that it s not about the friends or music but about an encounter with God. And there is no place that you can have a deeper encounter than at Mass. People pay top dollar for front row concert seats but who wants to sit in the front at Mass? We have to get past feelings. It's more than a feeling. Bored? By Addie Oglesby Some people use Mass is too boring as an excuse not to go. But there s no reason for it to be boring if you open their eyes into seeing it differently. If people find it hard to sit through regular Mass because, maybe the songs are boring, or it s too early, recommending 12 o clock Life Teen Mass would be a great idea. Instead of the usual Mass, Holy Infant s Life Teen Mass is full of upbeat songs, its fun, and has a band that plays all the music rather than just one person singing and playing the piano. The readings may be another thing that bore people because we re so tuned out, or don t know what exactly is going on in scripture. Reading the passage before Mass or attending Tuesday nights at Life Teen, can help people become more prone to listening in, because this allows you to already have a gist of what is going on in scripture!

7 HOLY INFANT S WORDS AND WORKS PAGE 7 By Mary Jane Zust SWEET TREATS Everyone enjoys an occasional treat. Many doctors recommend regular breaks in the busyness of our lives, and most would not be averse to our adding a sweet now and then. Lunch or break rooms are appearing in more and more of our workplaces, many of them including a microwave that greatly expands our choices of food items. The food section of our local newspaper offered a recipe for a novel way to enjoy that occasional sweet treat with the help of a microwave. In less than five minutes from wish to dish we can have a delicious single-serve cake. The recipe and directions follow: Single-serve mix and directions for cakes 1 box angel food cake mix (one box must be angel food) and 1 box any flavor cake mix. In a gallon-size plastic storage bag sift together (or mix well) the two boxes of cake mix. Seal well. For each cake measure 3 tablespoons of mix into a lightly sprayed coffee mug (a cup is too small), add 2 tablespoons water and stir well. Microwave for 1 minute, remove cake. The cake will have a slightly different texture than standard cakes, is delicious by itself but, if desired, whipped topping, mint chocolate chips or other garnish may be added. The mix may be stored in the pantry for three months and will make about 48 cakes. The article also suggested the recipe might be welcomed by college students. David s Grandmother agreed, invited him to help her make a cake. Not very excited, he agreed but his excitement turned to amazement when he had a cake in front of him within a few minutes. He returned to school carrying a box filled with a plastic bag of mix, two mugs, some mini chocolate chips and a tablespoon. In a recent call he said he has wowed his friends and had already used most of the mix and all the chocolate chips. INTERESTED IN QUILTING?
