1 Letter from Rev Dr Martin (Chunky) Young Dear Friends, As usual as we get closer to Christmas the more frenetic we become, this is both in our personal lives and the life of St. Columba s. This being the case I thought it would be a good idea to highlight some of the events and services that will lead us into and up to Christmas Day. Last week we celebrated All Saints Day, this is always a lovely service where we remember particularly those whom we have loved and lost awhile. It seems strange to say it like that, because we know that we never fully forget those who have filled our lives with love. But that service reminds us of the community we all share both in heaven and on earth. During the week we had all of the seniors of the congregation to tea and what a splendid morning it was. It is a wonderful occasion to recognise those who, in the past have served St. Columba s with such distinction. As I mentioned to the seniors on Wednesday, we as minsters are very aware that we do not visit as often as some would like, but be assured you are never forgotten by St. Columba s. Kevin was there to play the piano, a proverbial feast was arranged and much fun was had. Tonight, Friday 9 th, we have the Elder s Dinner. This year it will take the form of a Spit Braai and we are all hoping that the weather holds. This particular function gives us the opportunity to thank not only the elders for all of their hard work, but also their spouses or significant others. It would not be possible for St. Columba s to function if it weren t for all the help and support received from so many. This Sunday is Remembrance Day. This is the day we remember all of those who died in armed conflict. This is always a difficult service, as one wants to remember those who died and the price they paid for the beliefs and values they held. One never wants to glorify war, there is always a realistic tension between the two. This year, because of the 94.7 Cycle Race on the 18 th November, we have brought our Communion service forward. Kevin and I have arranged a Processional Communion; please make every effort to be there on this coming Sunday.

2 Letter from Rev Dr Martin (Chunky) Young continued This brings us to the Season of Advent, that time of preparation and expectation. Our first Advent Sunday coincides with the Nicarela Christmas Market which is being held from 30 th to Nov-2 nd of Dec this year. As has become our tradition the 9:30 service will be held in the Park. It will be a service of baptism and the Sunday School children will present their Nativity play which are always so much fun. The following Sunday, 8 th Dec. second Sunday in Advent, we are back in Church and I have invited Chris Griswold to preach at all three services. Chris will be leaving St. Columba s and South Africa to further his own academic and professional career. We will really miss him The Third Sunday of Advent is always our traditional nine Lessons and Carols with Communion. Kevin and the choir will once again lead this service with some wonderful singing. Readings will be done by the minsters and a number of lay people. On the last day of Advent Sunday 22 nd Dec, those who attend the morning services will once again hear how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world. I know we have done this before, but people who come to these services love the images and pictures that are created as so many have family abroad. This particular service brings us a little bit closer to them. The Evening service on the 23rd will be replaced by a Carol Service in the park and members are invited to bring a picnic basket and enjoy a social evening thereafter. This brings us to the Christmas Eve service which begins at 11:45 pm. Communion is celebrated and we all go home for a short rest before our annual Christmas Luncheon which we serve to those less fortunate than ourselves. On Christmas Day 25 th, we have services at 8:00am and 9:30am, these are both family services and are filled with fun, laughter and celebration. This year Andre Hattingh, a well known South African musician has agreed to do a solo at both services. Directly after the services we start serving the Christmas Lunch. A bus collects 250 people who cannot afford traditional Christmas festivities. They are served a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings and are sent home with a special gift. The children have a party in the hall upstairs and are served hamburgers, crisps, and cool drinks and of course, Father Christmas will arrive with a sleigh full of gifts. I hope you enjoy the Advent season, and join us for some wonderful celebrations. Your friend and minster Chunky CONDOLENCES Our sincere condolences to the Keight family on the death of Jessica.

6 This is an early reminder of the upcoming Parkview Charity Christmas Market this year 30 November to 2 December, as always in the George Hay Park, Parkview. We have planned a fantastic programme including local talent such as the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, Kathy Raven, Josie Field, IceProject, 2 nd Life, Ciaran de Chaud and his band Goldilox Zone, Lucy Kruger, Idol s competitor Cameron Bruce, a carol sing-a-long with Inferno Opera, and not least the Nativity play on Sunday morning! Having sampled all bands I would call it a guitar festival but then it is so much more and really caters for all tastes. Please follow the links below to get an impression of what is in stall for you at the market: gives you an overview in pictures of the market last year as well as opening times and the programme. to see the youtube video Rollercoaster from IceProject really like it you will too. to see 2 nd Life perform a must for those enjoying guitarists and for a great latest song Everything is Possible". Now to Kathy Raven She plays blues music similar to Jimi Hendrix, Ella Fitzgerald, Lenny Kravitz - just amazing. Here her here: No need to introduce Josie Field and her amazing music watch her here: She now has three albums under her belt, the latest of which has been describe as her best work ever! Don t want to leave out Ciaran have a listen to - choose Searching for change. South African audiences first came to know Cameron Bruce when, at just 17, he wowed the Idols judges with his stirring version of the John Mayer classic. Here is a link for you to take a tour of his music Or see his Idol audition and then the more I watch him the more I wonder why the heck I didn t take the time to vote vote vote for him. Love it!! More love goes to Lucy Kruger see her performing Heaven live on the Fringe at the National Arts Festival 2012 on She recently launched her debut album and we are lucky to get her back on stage.

7 Inferno Opera is made up of Lawrence Joffe, Adrian Galliard and Raymond Tyack, all accompanied by Neil Bennett on the piano and they will lead us on Friday night in Carol singing. Between them, they have appeared in more than 70 professional musicals around South Africa. Lawrence Joffe also appeared in television productions like Isidingo, Generations, Zero Tolerance and Egoli. A classical trained baritone, he has been known to torment the neighbours at shower time. His mother thinks he sings quite nice. J Try the voice clips on index.php5?title=lawrence_joffe not songs but good humour and reminds me of Trevor Noah! The group performing is the Chamber Winds from the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company. This group, conducted by Francois Conradie, comprises about 25 musicians who are either too old to belong to the Youth Orchestra whose maximum age is 25 or, for a variety of reasons, unable to commit to the orchestra schedule and are not ready to hang up their instruments. Mostly young adults, the group has a few young at heart members who add great value to the ensemble. Performing a wide variety of musical styles, this ensemble delivers an exciting programme. And if you are not coming for the fantastic music then there is the champagne & oyster bar, beer tent where rugby and golf will be shown on a big screen, a hundred arts and crafts stalls for your unique Christmas gifts and lots of children activity. Here we offer water skiing, acrobats and fire spinners, funfair games, of course Father Christmas and so much more! As always, the doors open on Friday (30 November) at 15h00 and Saturday and Sunday from 10am. We are open on Friday and Saturday until 10pm and Sunday till 16h00. Please remember the pantry when you are grocery shopping: Pkt of macaroni/spaghetti, tin mixed meat, jelly/instant pudding, dish liquid. MEN S SHOES & T-SHIRTS T URGENTLY REQUIRED for distribution to the local community Any underwear, socks (preferably washed) and caps are also most welcome There is a receiving bin at the church entrance for your convenience. Thank you and kind regards Penny
