commentary i For more background information, read the following in past issues or in the Fall 2012 issue of Biblical Illustrator Plus (CD-ROM): Persecution and Tribulation for Early Believers (Fa 11), Simon Peter: The Man and His Ministry (Sp 07), The Life Situation and Purpose of First Peter (Su 93). BI Plus is available for purchase at Why Study This Lesson? In May, 2010, a flood of epic proportions devastated my city Nashville, Tennessee. Many parts of the city and surrounding areas were underwater. Rising water damaged or destroyed countless homes and businesses. Many victims still struggle to recover. Recently, my pastor invited a church member who suffered flood damage to tell his story in a morning worship service. He thanked his extended family, his church, and his neighbors for their assistance immediately after the flood and for continuing support. He did not minimize the pain and ongoing struggle he and his family were experiencing. While he acknowledged other people s assistance, he centered his hope in God. The last few years have been tough times economically and otherwise for many adults. As you study Peter s reminder that Christians have a living hope, you can encourage believers to tell others about the hope they have as Christians. What Is the Lesson s Biblical Truth? The living hope we have through faith in Jesus Christ helps us live through difficult times. How Does the Lesson Fit in God s Story? GENERAL BACKGROUND As a result of Adam and Eve s sin in the garden of Eden, God subjected the entire creation to futility (hardship, suffering, guilt, loss, pain). Yet He did so as a basis of providing hope that would come through His plan of redemption in Jesus Christ (see Rom. 8:20-21; Eph. 2:4-10). BACKGROUND OF 1 PETER Peter followed the common format of letter-writing in his time, beginning by identifying himself as the writer, specifying the letter s recipients, and offering a salutation of good will. BACKGROUND PASSAGE (1 Peter 1:1-12) Hope: Recognize Its Basis (1 Pet. 1:1-5) Peter stressed that Jesus resurrection is the basis of believers receiving a living hope (v. 3). Christians have an eternal inheritance reserved for them in heaven. Through faith, they are secure in God s hand as they await Christ s return (vv. 4-5). Hope: Rejoice in Response (1 Pet. 1:6-9) Peter declared that believers trials are temporary and serve to refine their faith. Thus they can rejoice that at Christ s return, their genuine, persevering faith will result in praise, glory, and honor (vv. 6-7). Even people who never have seen Christ can still love Him and trust Him for salvation. Their love and faith issue in indescribable joy because they are moving toward their salvation s ultimate completion (vv. 8-9). Hope: Recall God's Grace (1 Pet. 1:10-12) Peter emphasized the magnitude of believers privilege. Prophets who looked toward Christ s coming and redemptive sufferings realized their prophecies would not be fulfilled in their lifetimes. Rather, through Spirit-inspired heralds the recipients of Peter s letter had received the remarkable good news of salvation in Christ. Even heaven s angels want to know about God s provision of redemption. 14 EXPLORE THE BIBLE LEADER GUIDE

Hope: Recognize Its Basis (1 Pet. 1:1-5) HCSB 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To the temporary residents dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you. 3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 5 You are being protected by God s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. KJV 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Verses 1-2. The recipients of 1 Peter did not have to scan to the letter s end to learn the writer s identity. The letter originated with Simon Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. Jesus had given Simon the Aramaic nickname Cephas, rock (see John 1:42). The Greek equivalent was Petros (that is, Peter), which means a rock (or a stone). Thus in our vernacular, his nickname might be Rocky. Peter and his brother, Andrew, were the first of 12 apostles Jesus chose to be with Him during His earthly ministry (see Mark 1:16). Peter used his Greek nickname because he was writing to mostly Greek-speaking Gentile believers and perhaps also because Jesus had given him the name. He wrote in his capacity as Jesus specially chosen apostle (one sent on mission with the sender s authority). His words comprised Christ s message given to him. The words Jesus Christ were more than a proper name; they specified Jesus as Savior and Messiah, God s Anointed Deliverer. Israelite prophets, priests, and kings were anointed to set them apart for their roles. In the ultimate sense, Jesus was Prophet, Priest, and King in God s redemptive purpose. Peter wrote to Christians he called temporary residents.? The Greek words rendered temporary residents refer literally to elect sojourners members of God s new-covenant people who were living temporarily in a country not their own. Peter reminded these believers they were earthly pilgrims journeying toward their heavenly home. The term dispersed likely refers to all Christians Jewish and Gentile scattered across an area of the Roman Empire. The provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia spanned the northern half of what is today the nation of Turkey. Peter stressed that believers were chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father. The Greek words for chosen ( elect, KJV) and foreknowledge underscore God s initiative in salvation while still allowing for human response. That is, God took the first step and offered salvation to the letter s recipients. Wherever a diamond ( ) appears before a word, see page 6 for pronunciation help and quick definitions.? Study Question 1 from ETB Personal Study Guide, page 13: Why did Peter refer to his readers as temporary residents? In what sense are all Christians temporary residents? 6 i Read the articles Simon Peter: His Years of Ministry and Bithynia and Pontus in the Fall 2012 issue of Biblical Illustrator or Biblical Illustrator Plus (CD-ROM). KEY DOCTRINE: GOD S PURPOSE OF GRACE Election is the gracious purpose of God, according to which He regenerates, justifies, sanctifies, and glorifies sinners. It is consistent with the free agency of man, and is the glorious display of God s sovereign goodness. (See also Gen. 12:1-3; John 1:12-14; Rom. 8:28-30; Eph. 1:3-6.)? What do most people ordinarily mean when they use the word hope? How is the living hope that Peter described different? (1:3) The readers had responded with faith in Christ, as indicated by the word obedience. The Greek term translated foreknowledge has the sense of taking note of or having regard for someone. From eternity, God s purpose was that sinful people would respond positively to His grace. God is Father in the highest and best sense; believers are members of His family of faith. Peter s readers also had been set apart for obedience by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit had been active in leading them to salvation. Through His work, they had placed their faith in Christ. The phrase for the sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ has an Old Testament background. In a ceremony inaugurating the old covenant, Moses sprinkled the Israelites with the blood of sacrificial animals (see Ex. 24:8). The sprinkling of blood symbolized cleansing. Peter declared that believers receive forgiveness through Jesus blood His life given in atoning sacrifice. Peter concluded his greeting with a salutation of blessing for believers. He wanted them to receive an increased supply of grace and peace. Grace is God s free, undeserved favor His sheer goodness in action. Peace is wholeness or soundness under God s rule. Peter prayed for believers continued well-being through God s loving activity on their behalf. Verses 3-4. In the form of a doxology, Peter stated the emphasis of 1:3-12. The Greek word translated praise has the sense of giving honor of which one is worthy, of speaking well of someone. God is the proper subject of believers praise. He is supremely the God and Father of [the] Lord Jesus Christ. In His incarnation, Jesus acknowledged the Heavenly Father s preeminence (see Matt. 27:46; John 20:17). Peter s full title for Jesus stressed His Deity (Lord) and His identity as Savior (Jesus) and Messiah (Christ). God is worthy of praise because He made new life possible. The Greek term rendered mercy presents the ideas of compassion and kindness. The word great evokes the qualities of vastness, abundance, and intensity. Because of God s boundless, deep compassion, He gifted repentant sinners with a new birth. Literally, God caused [them] to be born again. To people who placed their faith in Christ, God gave a new life, a new beginning a spiritual rebirth. Believers receive a living hope. [See Explore More of the Word: Living Hope, p. 19.] The word living translates the distinctive Greek term for eternal life. Christians hope is not the wishful thinking laden with uncertainty that most people ordinarily express when they use the word hope. Believers confident assurance is based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The power that raised Christ from death is the basis and guarantee of Christians victory over death.? Believers also are reborn into an eternal inheritance. Israelite families entering the promised land were given allotments of land as their inheritance. In contrast to these earthly, temporary allotments, believers future inheritance is eternal. Peter described this inheritance as enduring, not subject to decay (imperishable); pure (uncorrupted); and of lasting (never withering) grace and beauty (unfading). This glorious inheritance is kept in heaven for Christians. The Greek term rendered kept has the sense of being reserved, guarded. Verse 5. Peter assured believers they would receive their inheritance a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. When they first placed their faith in Christ, they were saved. In the present, they were living out their salvation as they grew spiritually. The completeness of their salvation would be revealed when Christ returned at the end of history. The Greek term rendered ready means prepared or waiting. The assured inheritance salvation s fulfillment awaited 16 EXPLORE THE BIBLE LEADER GUIDE

God s timing. In the meantime, through their faith in God, Christians were guarded (garrisoned) by His power to protect and preserve them. Peter did not mean they would be shielded from all difficulties. Rather, God would enable them to face hardships with steadfast faith. When people place their faith in Christ, they receive salvation and a living hope continuing solid assurance concerning their future based on God s faithfulness and ability. Only a relationship with Christ offers such hope. Hope: Rejoice in Response (1 Pet. 1:6-9) HCSB 6 You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials 7 so that the genuineness of your faith more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. KJV 6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. Verse 6. The assurance of their eternal inheritance was a source of ongoing joy for believers. The Greek word translated rejoice has the idea of being overjoyed, of celebrating. The phrase in this probably refers to believers living hope their confident expectation of their salvation s fulfillment (see 1:3-5). Their confidence in God s keeping power enabled them to look beyond their various trials to an assured future. The words for a short time stressed that the difficulties believers faced were temporary. The phrase you have had to struggle literally reads it is necessary you have been put to grief. The phrase it is necessary translates a Greek term for divine necessity. Christians faithfulness to Christ inevitably brought various (many and diverse) trials (tests of character). I do not think Peter meant God deliberately inflicted suffering on believers but that inevitable hardships had resulted from their loyalty to Christ. Verse 7. These believers trials may have taken the form of opposition and harassment with only occasional violence. Nevertheless, the difficulties served to reveal the genuineness of [their] faith. The Greek term rendered genuineness means approved or verified character. It was used of metal that had been tested and found to be acceptable. Believers faith was priceless; not even gold whose impurities had been removed by fire in the refining process could compare with it. Gold eventually would perish, but believers faith would endure. Grammatically, the phrase may result in praise, glory, and honor can mean that believers proven faith will elicit God s praise toward His people at Christ s return. It also can mean that believers refined faith would bring glory to God.? In reality, both meanings are true: faithful Christians will receive God s commendation at the end time, and they will give God due praise, honor, and glory.? Study Question 2 from ETB Personal Study Guide, page 13: What will be one of the results, made evident at Jesus second coming, of a Christian s genuine faith amid trials? (1:7) September 2 Living with Hope 17

? How does Christian joy in the midst of difficulties differ from the grin-andbear-it approach some people adopt? (1:9) Verse 8. Peter commended believers for loving Jesus the Messiah even though they had not seen Him. They still could not see Him, but they believed in Him. Their trust in and commitment to Him continued, even amid actual or threatened persecution. They also rejoiced with joy that was inexpressible (beyond words) and glorious (radiant). Verse 9. Believers could rejoice in their present difficulties because of their assurance of receiving the goal of [their] faith, the salvation of [their] souls. The Greek word rendered goal means culmination, purpose, or completion. The term souls may be translated lives (total being). As in 1:5, the word salvation refers to the fulfillment of redemption salvation in its future tense of glorification. Salvation s past tense is expressed as justification (being made right with God) at conversion. Its present tense is termed sanctification growing in Christlikeness. Believers salvation would culminate in their living with God in eternity. Because Christians have a living hope, we can rejoice even while we face difficulties. Our joy issues from God s presence with us and His care for us.? Hope: Recall God s Grace (1 Pet ) HCSB 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated. 11 They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Angels desire to look into these things. KJV 10 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. (? Study Question 3 from ETB Personal Study Guide, page 13: In what sense did Old Testament prophets serve future generations even more than their own generation when they searched for God-given understanding about the Messiah? (1:10) Verse 10. Peter reminded his readers that the Scriptures contained prophecies concerning the salvation God had provided through Christ. They were experiencing in the present the salvation that would reach fulfillment in the future (see 1:9). Peter referred to redemption as the grace that would come to them Gentiles as well as Jews. Salvation through Christ s sacrificial self-giving came as the supreme expression of God s undeserved love in action. The Old Testament prophets were God s spokesmen. They had searched (scrutinized) and carefully investigated (examined closely) God s promised deliverance. They announced it as prediction; believers experienced it as fulfillment.? Verse 11. The prophets continually examined their prophecies about God s salvation. They wanted to know what time or what circumstances (what fitting time of God s determination) God would fulfill the prophecies. Peter stated that the Spirit of Christ within them inspired their prophecies. Interpreters have viewed the phrase the Spirit of Christ to refer to the preexistent Christ and to the 18 EXPLORE THE BIBLE LEADER GUIDE

Holy Spirit sent from Jesus (see John 16:7). The Greek term rendered was indicating literally means was pointing to. The verb s tense indicates that through the ages, various prophets predicted God s provision of salvation. The Spirit foretold (testified in advance) the sufferings in store for the Messiah. Here Peter may have had in mind the Suffering Servant prophecy in Isaiah 52:13 53:12. The glories that would follow likely refers to Christ s resurrection, ascension, exaltation, and triumphant return. Verse 12. The Old Testament prophets were aware they would not live to see God s provision of salvation through His Messiah. The verb tense of were serving expressed the length and consistency of their ministry. They knew a future generation would experience their prophecies fulfillment. The phrase these things refers to Christ s birth, ministry, atoning death, and triumphant resurrection. What the prophets had anticipated now was a reality. The Holy Spirit sent from heaven impelled the evangelists (bearers of good news) who announced (proclaimed) the gospel to them. God s Spirit had been active in the prophets (see 1 Pet. 1:11); He also inspired the proclaimers of the good news of Christ. The Greek word translated angels means messengers. The writer of Hebrews described them as ministering spirits (Heb. 1:14). They are a created order of heavenly beings who serve God. In their privileged state, they do not experience salvation as humans do. However, they intensely long to look into the salvation God has provided. The Greek term rendered to look into presents the idea of bending down and stretching the neck to peer at something marvelous. It conveys the sense that angels are amazed spectators of believers salvation. Peter reminded believers that saving grace truly is amazing.? Salvation and its inherent glorious hope come only through God s work in Christ. Christians are privileged to receive what prophets could only forecast and angels can only view with wonder. What Now? My Mission How can you lead your class to put into action this week what you ve learned from God s Word about living with hope? Receive an eternal living hope by believing in Jesus Christ as Savior. Rejoice that in Christ your salvation is greater and stronger than any trials you are facing or will face. Praise God for His grace and patience which sustain you during times of trial. Explore more of the Word Living Hope (1 Pet. 1:3) The Greek word translated hope in 1 Peter 1:3 means trust, confidence. In everyday usage the term was used to express expectation of either good or bad. In the New Testament, however, the term consistently was used in a positive sense: expectation of good. In the context of Christian doctrine, it expressed joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation. It is a distinctly Christian quality that non-christians do not have (see Eph. 2:12). The term living conveys the sense that Christian hope has a vital power in it and that power is exerted in believers. Christian hope is eternal; it never dies. The resurrected Christ provides His followers with this energizing force. The living Lord Jesus gives to those who trust in Him a living hope a life of distinctive quality now and an assurance of superabundant life with Him in eternity.? What in your view are the most amazing truths about God s saving grace? (1:12) September 2 Living with Hope 19

Your goal this week is to help adults tell others about the hope they have as Christians. TEACHING SUGGESTIONS FOR A MEANINGFUL GROUP TIME 1. Get Started Distribute copies of Handout: What Doesn t Kill You (Pack Item 3) and direct learners to jot down typical responses to this familiar saying. (If you do not have the Leader Pack, see p. 43.) Discuss responses. Q: How do people maintain hope in the middle of these situations? Discuss. Say: Some methods of handling struggles are healthy, but others (like addictions or self-harm) are very dangerous. Group time o n l i n e a t w w w. l i fe w ay. co m / ex t ra Fi n d EXTRA! h e l p 2. Get into the Word Point out Poster: Unit 1 (Pack Item 2) posted on a focal wall. Say: The next three Bible study lessons will emphasize different aspects of living the Christian life in the midst of difficult times. Highlight today's session title. Say: Hard times can steal our hope if we allow it, but Jesus wants us to keep our eyes on Him and to focus on the hope that only He can provide. He also wants us to be prepared to share His hope with those around us. Hope: Recognize Its Basis 1 Peter 1:1-5 Q: How geographically spread out is your family and/or extended family? How often does everyone get together? Read 1 Peter 1:1-2. Direct attention to Map: The Roman World in Early Christian Times (Pack Item 1) or to the inside back cover of their Personal Study Guide (PSG). Highlight Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. Say: Peter s letter would have been like communicating with family members spread out over a large area. Explain that Simon Peter, Jesus disciple, was the writer and penned the letter from Rome (see pp ). Say: The recipients were scattered throughout an area of what is now Turkey. The congregations Peter mentioned probably included Jews, but most of the members would have been Gentiles. Read 1 Peter 1:3-5. Q: What is hope? What serves as the basis for your definition? Discuss responses. Make the point that hope can be easily misunderstood in our culture. Some people believe it s simply a wish they want to come true, but that is not what Peter emphasized. He referred to a solid truth that can serve as an anchor for our lives. Say: Our hope rests in the new birth we receive through a relationship with Jesus. Peter taught that this hope has implications for our lives both now and in the future (Explore More of the Word, p. 19). Encourage learners to circle the words that relate to the source or foundation of hope in the printed Scripture of their PSG (p. 15). Hope: Rejoice in Response 1 Peter 1:6-9 Say: Everyone has something that holds value. Sometimes, the value is monetary; other times, the value is sentimental. Q: What is the most valuable thing you own? How do you protect that item? Discuss. Emphasize that something holding sentimental value often is considered more precious than material possessions. Read 1 Peter 1:6-9. Call for responses to Study Question 2 (pp. 13, 19 of PSG). Encourage learners to use the information on page 17 of their PSG to learn about the value of gold and the need to refine it. 20 EXPLORE THE BIBLE LEADER GUIDE

Say: Peter compared genuine faith to pure gold. Q: Why would a genuine faith be so valuable to Peter s readers? Make the point that Peter's readers were undergoing some degree of persecution because of their faith (v. 6), and the hope produced by their faith was what carried them through those difficult times. Q: How did these early Christians respond to the persecution? Direct learners to circle words in the printed Scripture (p. 16 of their PSG) that describe their responses ( rejoice, v. 6; love Him, believe in Him, and joy, v. 8). Use the information on pages to explain how this endurance related to the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls (v. 9). Emphasize that relying on their faith in times of persecution also brought honor and glory to God (v. 7). Hope: Recall God s Grace 1 Peter 1:10-12 Say: God called prophets to speak to His people on His behalf. Prophets typically spoke to people who had drifted from the Lord, encouraging them to come back to God or warning them about coming judgment. Q: Have you ever thought about what role the Old Testament prophets might play in your life? Discuss responses. Read 1 Peter 1: Q: What does this passage say about the prophets? Explain the role of the prophets in investigating the matter of salvation. Say: By reminding the ancient Israelites that the Messiah was coming, they also were reminding us of the salvation we have through Christ. Peter saw the fulfillment of prophecy as a further reason for believers to embrace the living hope they had through their relationship with Jesus even in times of persecution. Q: What comes to mind when you hear the word legacy? Discuss. Emphasize that a legacy is something valuable carried from one generation to the next. The prophets left a legacy by ministering to us. Our lives are different because of the message they shared. Encourage learners to think about the legacy they will be leaving. Say: We should help others find the living hope and legacy that only Jesus can provide. Q: How can you live in a way that touches others including future generations and help them move toward a personal relationship with Christ? for further discussion How should the knowledge of God's protecting power impact the lives of believers today? (1Pet. 1:1-5) From the Personal Study Guide (PSG): What hardships or trials have you encountered on account of your faith in Christ? (1 Pet. 1:7) What is the importance of the living hope believers receive by grace? (1 Pet. 1:10-12) notes: 3. Get to the Point Direct attention to examples learners listed on Handout: What Doesn t Kill You (Pack Item 3). Say: On the surface, human beings have many reasons to lose hope. Q: How effective are you at sharing the living hope that Peter referred to in today s session? What could you do to be better prepared to share this hope with those who cross our paths? Say: The starting point for sharing hope with others is making sure that you are experiencing the hope in your own life. Share the plan of salvation using the inside cover of the PSG as a guide. Encourage learners to evaluate their relationship with God. Remind them you're available to talk privately with anyone who has questions about the hope Jesus provides. Q: How will you live with a clearer sense of hope this week? Distribute index cards and pencils. Direct learners to write a short prayer, thanking God for the hope He has provided through Jesus and committing themselves to share that hope with others. Close in prayer.
