A very BIG thank you to all who helped make the installation such a special day, from the music, to preaching, prayers, gifts, flowers and cake! And to Karen Swann, who worked so hard behind the scenes on the worship bulletin and many other details. Thanks to all of you for the many good wishes and kindnesses. I was glad that so many of you could participate in worship that day, and the Laying on of Hands was especially meaningful. I felt surrounded by your support and believe that the Spirit was mightily present as we prayed together. We were blessed by the words of the Rev. Tod King who shared many insights about the Congregational Way. The Rev. Harry Adams gave the Charge, reminding me to continue to Learn, to remember to Listen. And make God s Love the center of my ministry. Pertinent words, which I will endeavor to remember, on a day which I will not forget. In thanksgiving, Pastor Clare 2

3 Christian Education Update Our fall Sunday School session is coming to a close and the winter term begins on December 1st. Many thanks to our fall teachers who committed their time, talents and energy to working with our young people. For more information about the Advent Festival, please see the Dick Smith s write-up in this issue of the Springboard. We could still use a few helpers in the kitchen, before and after the potluck dinner, so please contact Jennifer McCleery if you are able to help out. ~Jennifer McCleery, Christian Education Coordinator Youth Group Update The Spring Glen Church Youth Group has had a fantastic month! We collected about 15 pounds of canned food at our Halloween party, which we donated to the Connecticut Food Bank. We had a Q&A session on Christianity, Religion and Spirituality, in which the youth brought their own questions to youth group for discussion. We also had a discussion on Sacred Texts, particularly the Torah, Bible and Quran. Last, we were invited to an evening of fellowship with First Church of Christ in Bethany, and look forward to hosting them at Spring Glen sometime in the Spring of Our theme for December will be the season of Advent. We will be hosting cookie decorating for all ages at the Advent Festival on December 8th, and will also be lighting the Advent candle during worship on December 15th. As always, we invite all high school-aged youth of the Spring Glen community to join us on Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:30 in the Fellowship Room for snacks, games and discussion. On behalf of the Spring Glen Church Youth Group, a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and yours! ~In Christ's peace, Kristen Provost Switzer Happy News Former Youth Minister Kara Scroggins was recently honored with a Yale Jefferson Service Award for her volunteer leadership activities as a graduate student at the Yale Divinity School. Forgiveness Book Discussion and Learning Circle Co-Facilitated by Curt Johnson, Doug Hawthone, Carolyn Cary Perhaps the most counter-cultural and challenging imperative of the teachings of Jesus is the call for us to forgive our trespassers - those who have hurt, maligned or who seem to have set out to do us harm. His spiritual directive cannot be clearer, nor the promise of rebirth and release greater than from living into this practice. Join a small group discussion and pilgrimage to grow our mutual understanding of the craft and discernment of forgiveness for three Wednesdays in January from noon to 1 pm in downtown New Haven. We will read The Way of Forgiveness, Letting Go, Easing Stress and Building Strength, by D. Patrick Miller. This short book of just over 100 pages contains meditations on the subject and guidance on the practice. We will meet at the Center Church Parish House office, at 311 Temple Street just before Elm Street and the New Haven Library. Parking is usually available on Temple Street. There is also a parking lot near the corner of Orange and Elm (South on Temple, left on Elm, left on Orange - parking lots on either side of Orange in next block). We will meet at noon on: Wednesday, January 8 th Wednesday, January 15th Wednesday, January 29th All are welcome at all, or welcome to drop in for one or two. Sherry Nieman is willing to order books for folks who want to place an order by December 8th, and reimburse her for $12. The books will be available on December 15. 11 ... Save The Date: Spring Glen Church hosts Abraham's Tent January Spring Glen Church is one of many churches throughout the New Haven area participating this winter to provide overnight shelter for 12 male clients from Columbus House. Spring Glen Church has chosen the week of January 20 to January 26 to host these men in our Great Hall. Volunteers are needed for the following: to provide, serve, and share meals with guests; to share after-dinner activities, i.e. games, movies, and conversation; volunteers to stay overnight. Look for sign-up sheets soon. ~Alice White and Sue Spight From the interfaithnewhaven.org website: "Abraham's Tent is a cooperative effort between Columbus House and congregations of faith in greater New Haven, represented by Interfaith Cooperative Ministries. Started in 2009 when a city funded shelter was destined to remain closed for the winter due to lack of funds, the immediate purpose was to find additional shelter for homeless people during the fast approaching cold season. The Interfaith Cooperative Ministries (ICM) rallied congregations to open their facilities to house approximately a dozen men for one week during the season. The response was immediate and oversubscribed. The experience for both the homeless "guests" and the members of the various congregations hosting them was character-building and memorable. Eleven out of the twelve guests were in permanent or transitional housing the following year, at least in part due to their Abraham's Tent experience - an outcome that was never anticipated. The threatened city funded shelter did open at the last minute in 2009 and was to be open again starting in But the overwhelming success of Abraham's Tent, by every measure, during its first year compelled that the program go forward. How it works: Columbus House selects approximately twelve men that they believe are well suited to the Abraham's Tent program and who will benefit greatly from the experience. These are the men who will visit the various congregations for the winter season. Each day, the men go to Columbus House at 4:00 PM. They will wash, receive medications if necessary, see counselors if necessary, get clean linens on scheduled days, and store their belongings except for a small overnight bag. They are taken to the hosting site to arrive at 6:00 PM. The cots they sleep on are provided by Columbus House and are delivered each Monday morning to the host site of the week. Once at the site, the guests enjoy a simple but nutritious meal with their hosts. They help clean up after the meal and then settle in for evening activities. Typically, there are some board games, a television, and possibly some DVD's to chose from. Hosts join in the activities or conversations with guests. Lights are out at 10:00 PM. There are strict rules about alcohol, drugs, smoking, leaving the premises, and conduct." 11...

12 Covenant to Care Thanksgiving Baskets Colorful, stuffed grocery bags have filled much of the church office and will soon reach families in need. An enormous thank you to all of the generous people who have filled Thanksgiving bags and bought gift cards for families in need. Because of you, the families can have a wonderful and delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you again! ~ The Christian Action Committee... Diaper Drive: Thanks for Giving! Many thanks to all of you who donated disposable diapers during October in support of Christian Community Action s families in need. Because of your contributions we were able to deliver over 600 diapers along with several boxes of baby wipes that saved parents well over $300. When I asked CCA Case Manager Janet Vanterpool (pictured right) to smile for a picture, she told me, "That is easy. I am smiling already just knowing how happy these families will be when I actually have some diapers to provide for them- and especially these larger sizes. Even the Diaper Bank can t give us what we need, because their demand from other agencies is so great. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" ~With gratitude for your thoughtfulness and generosity, Carolyn Cary, Christian Action Committee AIDS Project New Haven Gratitude Thanks to the generosity of the Spring Glen Church community, we were able to donate $625 to AIDS Project New Haven in support of their van replacement fund. Executive Director Christopher Cole reports that "the overwhelming support from the community has enabled us to secure the funds to purchase a new van for our Caring Cuisine program", and he expressed his "heartfelt thanks". ~Helen Schaefer 12
