1 November/December 2017 Families Building Faith s Newsletter We ve received an overwhelming response in hearts needing encouragement this holiday season! We begin to build Christmas baskets and bags on the 15th of November! Say a prayer that our start be strong and we finish even stronger with God s love and support! Inside this issue: About FBF 2 Prayers & Praise 3 Collections 4 What can Christmas cheer do? He said to them, Go into the world and preach the good news to all creation. Mark 16:15 Have you ever thought of the power of good news? Think on the last time someone shared with you some really good news about life. How did it make you feel? Did it bring a smile to your face and a skip to your step? Did it rekindle hope in your heart and en- courage you to persevere? Well, that s exactly how the power of Christmas cheer works! It could be a message of love that is given through a gift that touches the heart. Or a card that shares words reminding another soul that they matter in this life. It could be a warm cup of cocoa and some pretty Christmas cookies that delivers the good news that someone cares enough to delight even your taste buds! Truly, it is good news that someone cares about you! It is great news to know you are not forgotten! And it is even more amazing news to understand that God knows right where you are and can move mountains to get to you!! Can you, my dear friend, share the good news that Christmas brings? Christmas Collections 2017 Christmas details 5 Calendars 6 Navigating 7 Experience 8 Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Psalm 2:11 Please remember FBF s Christmas collections for adults and kids have started and will run through December 15th. To ensure that items make it into baskets and out by Christmas, please drop off well before the deadline. Thanks so much for your steadfast support and prayers this holiday season!

2 Page 2 About FBF They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor. ~Isaiah 61:3 Families Building Faith offers opportunities to grow in your own faith as well as to help grow someone else s. Here are some thoughts to keep in mind as you read the newsletter: 1.) Variety. We have lots of different ways to plug into what we do in FBF, but please do not feel burdened to help with all of them. God has moved our hearts to help grow faith in people s lives in three primary ways: fellowship studies, service opportunities, and prayer. We warmly welcome you to join us as it best suits your situation! 2.) Community. From the beginning, we envisioned a community based effort that Ways to reach FBF: works best: familiesbuildingfaith draws people together to serve God and those in need, including each other. FBF is interdenominational, as a collective body of Christ, and non-denominational in its structure. We are not affiliated with any larger church or denomination. At its core, FBF is a network of hearts and hands coming together to grow faith. What you read on the coming pages gives you the chance to be a part of what God is doing through FBF. 3.) Collections. Depending upon the time of year, we collect a variety of items to pass on to others-in-need. We always work from the premise of passing along the things you were once blessed by but may now no longer need. We just ask that whatever you pass along be in EXCEL- LENT condition (not worn out, dirty, or in disrepair; like new being the best descriptor) unless otherwise noted in our newsletter or flyer. 4.) Timing. Please always note the collection dates! They are often limited in time as we RARELY collect something year round. Christmas collections are limited to Christmas; Easter to our Easter Basket Collection. Please know that we have purposely decided not to store items long term. This helps us to build our faith as well as others by relying on God to bring what is needed when we need it. 5.) Volunteering. There are lots of ways to help out. You can pray; you can collect; you can give your time with our sorts, assemblies, or delivery opportunities that coincide with our collections. These experiences are often for short periods of time and allow you to be hands-on with a project that will bless another. 6.) When helping. Though most do not ask, we do not give out tax deduction receipts. Please remember, we are not a 501(c)(3) and cannot be written off on Phone: You can also find us at familiesbuildingfaith Please contact us for drop off information. Please no drop offs on Sundays, if possible. Thanks for giving us time to rest too! Our Mission The mission of FBF is to help each other, and our world, walk stronger in faith with Jesus Christ. We are a network of believers who are striving to know Him better, to live out His Word, and to joyfully and lovingly fulfill His command to serve others while trusting Him to equip us with all that is needed to go where He leads. We warmly welcome those who have faith in Christ as well as those who just don t know where they stand as we understand that there are various points on the path to knowing Him. What FBF offers is a chance to come alongside believers and see how God is encouraging our lives, and the lives of many, to trust Him more and more each day. Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. ~Matthew 7:24

5 Christmas Workshops The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18 It is quickly becoming time to get our elf on! This week, we begin building Christmas baskets and working on things that will help spread Christmas cheer! After Thanksgiving, those workshops occur two to three times a week (in the evenings). Our weekend events are mostly filled. From now until mid- December, we will be working on bags and baskets. Our last basket assemblies occurs the week of Dec. 11th. Our stocking outreach then takes Prayers Plus Outreaches over until the 19th. Then the basement quiets down as we deliver in earnest. Please mark your calendars well in advance, and please know that we are okay with last minute signups. Troops and groups as well as families are very much welcome, but for kids under 6th grade in age, a parent must accompany every two children. Please contact Michelle with any questions! Sweet Treat Drive Mondays, December 4th & 18th Page 5 Drop off from 4:30-7pm We are praying for bakers who love to bake and decorators who love to decorate! For the last nine or ten years, we have been helping out a Christian mission in Detroit and a youth ministry that focuses on teens who are incarcerated. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives... Isaiah 61:1 We are super excited for our November and December Prayer Plus events! They happen here locally. Once a month, we rent our local VFW hall and share what we can with those in need...items, support and prayer. Each event runs from early in the morning until later in the evening, and is open from 11am-7pm. We are praying that hearts and lives be encouraged and strengthened in their hope and belief that God is present and able to provide. May God s kingdom grow in abundance in the lives of all involved. There are lots of opportunities to help on those monthly days as well as beforehand. We are limiting help at those events to teens and adults who have a heart and desire to serve others. November s P+, Monday, Nov. 27th, will involve providing people with resources we have learned of over the years as well as an assortment of wonderful things to brighten their lives. December s P+, Monday, Dec. 11th, will be our super fun North Pole Workshop, or so we are hoping and praying! We are looking for all kinds of fun help in spreading Christmas cheer!! Check out our sign-up! Taste and see that the Lord is good... Psalm 34:8 We collect as many baked goods as we can on the above dates, and pass them along to souls who have never tasted a home-made sweet before. Items do not need to be iced, and we take all sorts of goodies. You cannot bake too many. Contact Michelle with any questions. Please pray!

7 Ways to spread cheer... Jesus replied, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. Matthew 14:16 Often during this time of year, we hear families say to us, Oh, you are right! My aunt just lost my uncle; she d be perfect for your program. You see, there are usually more tender souls around then we often realize. A neighbor struggling with a divorce. A family member fighting an illness. An acquaintance who is raising her children alone. Whomever they are, they are likely closer than you think. As their souls come to your mind, know that you can make a difference in their lives. You can drop off a little bag of goodies, write an encouraging note, invite them over for coffee, offer to watch their kids, or even place a pretty anonymous gift on their doorstep. Challenge yourself (and your family) to inspire one other soul this December. Keep it simple and trust your efforts will brighten someone else s way. Tending memories at the holidays Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Psalm 42:5 Most of those who have lost someone they deeply loved know to expect the pangs of grief near the anniversary of their loss. At the holidays, we feel the ache of wishing our loved ones were near, but have you ever wondered why you feel so down on an average day in November or December? Grief rarely makes a simple calling in the space we want to relegate it to. Oftentimes, we are overcome with intermittent waves of sadness that perplexes us. Coming and going without a direct reminder of the loss. If we are fortunate, a memory might pop forwarded but even then, it might be a good one that seems at odds with the sadness we feel. As you move towards Thanksgiving and the holidays, remember to tend to those feelings that come and weigh on your soul. Take the time to ask yourself why you might be feeling this way? Don t shoo those emotions away. They are present for a reason and come by God s design. Grant yourself grace by understanding that most holidays tend to resonate the magnitude of loss loudly, and that resonance extends further into our daily lives than most realize. When it happens, turn to God as the psalmist did and trust Him with praise despite the heaviness on your soul. Helpful things to remember: Why are you so downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Page 7 Be kind to yourself Don t overbook Begin early Cry as much and as often as you need Allow support Traditions are important but aren t always a requirement Breathe & feel... 8 Training: After much prayer and reflection, we realized that God did not instruct us to put out a call for those with the gift of creativity when He had us start building Easter baskets. Nope, rather He showed us how to teach others to build, regardless of whether they thought they were creative. So, based on what we have learned, we are changing things up a bit regarding training for our Prayers Plus monthly events. When you sign up, we will send you some reading material to help prep you for what we do, how we do it and why. We ask that you read that before the event. Then, just like our basket assemblies after instruction time, you get to begin :o) Yep, hands-on training. We will try to put you in a position that works with your strengths and personality as well as being conducive to those who will be receiving God s blessings. There is a learning curve for all, so do not let fear hold you back! Experience teaches best When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and took note that these men had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 Earlier this year, as we scrambled to figure out how FBF could hand out Easter baskets directly in our local community, I found myself experiencing a whole host of emotions. The ones that stick out now are vulnerability and fear. While visiting the printer (then), he said something to the effect: Well Michelle, it looks like God is moving you guys out from behind-the-scenes to front-and-center. I will freely admit, those words struck a nerve in me. Later, as I thought about it more, he was right. I have long been very comfortable working with organizations that reached out and took care of the last step of helping another. Thinking on the above Scripture, I imagine that must have been how the disciples felt when Jesus was with them. They loved helping Him out, but were probably okay with being behind-the -scenes...doing what was needed without being noticed too much. You see, we are just unschooled and ordinary people when it comes to helping out others. We are not an aid agency and that has never been our goal. We just focus on quietly building and growing faith in the world around us, and have become a network of people (mostly believers) who want to do good for God, this world and others. What has changed is that we are now the ones giving out part of what is generated through our prayers, once a month. This change did not come about because of skill or advanced learning. Rather, God gave us the courage to believe that we could do what this change forced. Much like the disciples taking over the teaching, preaching, feeding and leading when Jesus ascended to heaven. It was courage that led them and experience that taught them, not skill. Hence, we are learning and adapting as we embark on reaching out directly. We realized that there may be some of you, who deep down, would love to serve directly. But maybe you, too, find the thought daunting. Let us encourage you to overcome your fear of not having the right skill set. Let us inspire you to know your lack of experience isn t a vulnerability. All you need is courage to trust God that you can make a visible difference in the life of another. Consider learning with us once a month on how to serve. It just might astonish the world around you!
