The Seven Churches of Asia Laodicea Laodicea Though Laodicea stood on the great highway at the junction of several important routes, it was a place of little consequence until the Roman province of Asia was formed in 190 BC. It then suddenly became a great and wealthy center of industry, famous specially for the fine black wool of its sheep and for the Phrygian powder for the eyes, which was manufactured there. In the vicinity was the temple of Men Karou and a renowned school of medicine. 1

Laodicea In the year 60 AD, the city was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake, but so wealthy were its citizens that they rejected the proffered aid of Rome, and quickly rebuilt it at their own expense. It was a city of great wealth, with extensive banking operations. International Standard Bible Encyclopedia Unlike Colossae s cold streams that were fed by the rain and snow on Mt Cadmus, Laodicea did not have a natural Potable water source. Laodicea The Lycus River, that ran by Laodicea, was fed by the Hot Springs from Heirapolis. This water contained large amounts of Sulphur and made those who drank it sick. The drinking water for the city had to be piped in from a natural spring 6 miles away. By the time this water reached the city it had warmed to the temperature of the environment around it (room temperature). 2

Jesus is going to use many of their physical situations to drive home some spiritual points to them. Re 3:14 "And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, 'These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 "So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 3

Re 3:17 "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' --and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked-- 18 "I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. Re 3:20 "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." 4

Jesus begins this epistle just as He has the others by first identifying who He is. 'These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: Jesus uses three words to describe what type of witness He is: Amen: from Greek: Amen meaning firm, trustworthy or surely Faithful: from Greek: Pistos meaning trustworthy sure or true True: From Greek Alethinos meaning truthful or true Jesus is using three different words to say the same thing. Why? To emphasize the point that what He has to say can be believed! needs to pay attention because what is about to be said is the Truth! Jesus also describes Himself as the Beginning of the Creation of God John describes in his gospel what Jesus is talking about. 5

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. The Word referred to here is Christ. Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Jesus has established His truthfulness and His position of Authority as God from the beginning This is someone that not only did the Laodiceans need to listen to but all the world as well. The next thing Jesus tells them is I know your works He has made this statement to each of the 7 Churches. If we don t get anything else from the study of these Churches, we should learn that Jesus is aware of what we are doing! 6

Next Jesus goes directly into the problem they had. Re 3:15 "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 "So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. I believe Jesus to be comparing them to the water situation they had in the city. Their water was luke warm. There is a use for cold water like they had a few miles away in Colossae. Its refreshing to drink It has medicinal purposes it can reduce swelling and fever There are uses for hot water like they had a few miles away at Heriopilis. It has medicinal purposes as well. Even today we soak aching joints and muscles in hot water. It also has cleansing potential. We wash our dishes in hot water 7

But luke warm or room temperature water doesn t have many uses. It is not desirable, It is useless! Jesus is telling these Christians at Laodicea that in their current condition they were useless as servants of Him. Much like the water of the Lycos river that would make one sick if they drank it. These Christians made Jesus sick and He is going to expel them from His body! Jesus describes what happens to those branches that are of no use or bear no fruit. Joh 15:1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 8

Those useless branches are taken away but what is done with them? Joh 15:6 "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If they continued on the path they were on, That is exactly what would happen to the Christians at Laodicea. They would be destroyed in Hell. This Group had severely misjudged their true condition. Re 3:17 "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' --and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked They had obtained great physical wealth and had begun to trust in it. Instead of everything going great for them as they believed, Jesus says they are wretched and miserable. 9

The word miserable means pitiable. Those who could see their true condition should feel sorry for them! Jesus says they were poor. They thought they were wealthy as a matter of fact the entire city was wealthy. They were poor in spiritual ways because they had turned away from Christ. Jesus also says they were blind He once again contrasts their physical state with their true spiritual state. How could they be blind? They lived in a city that produced a world famous eye salve. They had been blinded spiritually by the god of this world and had turned away from Christ. Jesus then tells them they were naked. These who were so wealthy in this worlds goods and lived in a city where some of the worlds most prized wool was sold, were naked. How could this be? 10

Again this problem is not a physical one but rather spiritual. They were poorly clothed spiritually. Paul describes what the Christian should wear. Col 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 11

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. These are the things the Christian should wear! God is not going to be looking at how nice the physical clothes we wear are but instead how we have clothed ourselves spiritually with the Word of God. Tit 2:9 Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. 12

Conclusion Do we know our true condition? It is a sad fact that most of the world does not realize the terrible condition they are in. How many people do we know who think everything is ok for them spiritually but we know they have been decieved Most fail to realize the only way we can truly know our spiritual condition is to compare ourselves to what the Word of God has to say. Many fall into the trap of comparing themselves to others. Conclusion 2Co 10:12 For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. The only way to be sure is to compare ourselves to what God says. 2Co 10:18 For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends. Ask ourselves this question. Does God commend us? 13

The Seven Churches of Asia Laodicea We began our study of the Church at Laodicea last time. The City of Laodicea was very wealthy It was famous for its fine black wool It was also a major medical center known for its eye salve It was also a city with no natural source of drinking water. Water had to be piped in from about 6 miles away The only natural water in the area would make one sick 14

Re 3:17 "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked 18 "I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 15

22 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." We looked at the problems that Jesus points out at Laodicea last time. Although they thought they were in great shape in reality their condition was deplorable. They were neither cold nor hot but luke warm. In this condition they were absolutely useless. They were wretched and miserable spiritually They were poor spiritually They were blind spiritually They were naked spiritually 16

In spite of their deplorable condition, there was still hope if they would only listen to the remedy that Jesus offers them. First He tells them to get true riches from Him. Rev 3:18 "I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich They had turned away from the riches of God to the riches of men. Jesus says if you truly want to be rich buy refined Gold from Him. These people had fallen into the trap of trusting in their physical riches just like the Rich Man Jesus talks about in Luke 12 Lu 12:16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 "And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?' 18 "So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 17

Lu 12:19 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' 20 "But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' 21 "So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. He failed to make provisions for eternity. Where do we put our main emphasis in this life? Do we focus on earthly wealth to the point we neglect what is the most important? The Laodiceans did. Mr 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 "Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? We need to follow the advice Jesus gave the multitude Joh 6:27 "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him." 18

Jesus says not to labor for the food which perishes. This doesn t mean don t work so we can eat but rather don t make the acquisition of material things our main goal in life. Instead we are to labor for the food that endures to everlasting life. Our main goal in this life should be to obtain those things that lead to eternal life When we labor for the food that endures to everlasting life Jesus will GIVE it to us. Remember what the verse said? Joh 6:27 "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him." Do you think that Jesus just didn t understand that works and grace are mutually exclusive? Absolutely not! Jesus is plainly teaching here that we must work for those things He will give us. We must work in order to receive His gift or His Grace. 19

The riches or Gold that Jesus has to offer us is His grace. Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace We can t buy this grace with physical wealth We can t earn it with good deeds Rather His grace is a gift to those who obey Him Heb 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, The next part of the remedy for their sad condition is to clothed with white garments Rev 3:18 white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed The Laodiceans were famous for their black wool that was used mainly to make clothing. Jesus again contrasts their physical situation with the spiritual and tells them to be clothed in white garments. White represents purity. He was telling them to be pure spiritually. 20

How were they to purify themselves so that they could have white garments? The same way that we obtain grace. Thru obedience. 1Pe 1:22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, Without obedience to the Truth, there is no purification for our souls Not obeying the Truth will have devastating consequences on anyone. Ro 2:8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness--indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God. 21

The next remedy Jesus gives them is to quit being blind! Rev 3:18 anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see These were not physically blind. They lived in a city that produce a world famous medicine for the eyes. They had become blind spiritually They were blind to their own spiritual condition Re 3:17 "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing. What a terrible condition to be in. To be wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked in the eyes of God and not know it. This is and has been a common problem of mankind Jesus pointed out this problem with the Pharisees Mt 15:14 "Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch. These blind religious leaders will fall and will cause their followers to do the same. 22

The Pharisees didn t realize they needed a physician Mt 9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. They thought of others as sinners but not themselves Ro 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, We often wonder why people can t understand plain scriptures even today. Jesus explains to His disciples why this is the case. Being blind to the Truth is not something new. Mt 13:13 "Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 "And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; 23

Mt 13:15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them. Many simply do not want the Truth. Until they sincerely wanted the Truth, they would not be able to understand it. We look at all the plain verses in the New Testament and are amazed that so many cannot understand. We have verses like the following: Col 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Mr 16:16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Ac 8:36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" 24

Heb 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. 1Co 16:2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. Ro 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. We could list other verses that many refuse understand. We need to be very careful ourselves not to fall into this same situation of being blind. If those Christians at Laodicea could become blind then certainly it could happen to us. If we begin to trust in the things of this world and lose our desire for the Truth, it will happen to us. When we set back and compare ourselves to others and begin to believe God must be pleased with me because I am so much better than all those people we are in trouble! 25

Jesus finishes up His letter to Laodicea with the following words of encouragement. Jesus is knocking at the door. He wants to come in and be a part of our lives but He is not going to force is way in. We open the door for Him when we hear His voice (gospel) and obey. Far too many times Christ finds Himself outside of the door of those who once were Christians wanting to be let into their lives again. Remember He is writing to Christians who have turned away from Him. 26

If we will let Him into our lives and be faithful servants of His until death then we will overcome and be able to have that beautiful home in Heaven with Jesus and His Father. Re 2:10 "Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. Will we open the door and let Christ be the central part of our life so we can overcome and have a home in heaven? Conclusion The church at Laodicea was blind! Being blind physically sometimes cannot be avoided. Being blind spiritually is up to us. We can close our eyes to the truth like those Jesus talked about in Matthew 13 Or we can open them to the wonderful truth of the Gospel that can save our souls This was the choice the Church at Laodicea had to make. This is the same choice we must make. 27
