2004 christian education week Christian Education Faith-Sharing in Jesus said to [the Samaritan woman at the well], Woman, believe me, the hour is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us. Jesus said to her, I am he, the one who is speaking to you. Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he? They left the city and were on their way to him. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman s testimony (John 4:21, 23, 25-26, 28-30, 39, NRSV). Stories transform lives. Stories come from the core of our being, reflecting the way we make decisions and form responses, judgments, and relationships. Storytelling is more than a rehearsal of the facts; it is the telling of the circumstance and feelings that surround our involvement in the story. This has the possibility of clarifying our own faith as we share the story again in different settings and in different times. As in the Scriptures, we all come with our own unique stories. Nathanael was a skeptic and needed space to be able to raise doubts (John 1:43-51). Timothy grew in faith through the faith and nurture of his family (2 Timothy 1:3-7). Paul lost his sight in order to see God more clearly (Acts 9:1-19). The woman at the well with Jesus found a new way of relating to God and her neighbors (John 4:1-42). They all needed to be able to tell their story to express their own faith, their own understanding of their experience with God in Christ. This kind of faith-sharing takes place best in small groups when people are able to place themselves within a biblical story or experience, or identify with a passage in the Psalms. Stories also have the possibility of transformation for us as we hear how others relied on or even questioned faith and God in the midst of a struggle. Transformation takes place when there is an intersection of stories: mine with yours, ours with God s. The Purpose of CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Claiming and living the promises of God can be dramatic and lead us to places and actions we never dreamed were possible for us. Claiming and living the promises of God can also mean accepting the ordinary lives that we live day by day. God claims us as God s own and promises to be with us. We respond by claiming what we know of those promises and by living them out as fully as we can at every moment of our lives (Foundations for Teaching and Learning, page 44). christian EDUCATiON week This intersection is the center of our Christian community. While God has worked in and through individuals, it has always been in the context of family, tribe, house church, group, and community. Authentic faith-sharing requires a safe, trusting, non-judgmental, hospitable atmosphere to have integrity. In a place where love is genuine (Romans 12:9-21), the faithsharer can raise doubts and questions, for often it is in the sharing and dialogue that we find clarification and new insight. Our stories and the way in which they intersect God s story continue to form identity for individuals and for the community. Our own faith matures as we witness and share faith. Shirley F. Clement is the recently retired Director of Evangelism Ministries, General Board of Discipleship, Nashville, TN.

Connected Through Christ COMMUNiTY is THE KEY TO Faith-Sharing In 2002, it became obvious to the church leaders that a new Sunday school class was needed. The class launched in September and, one year later, class members were assuming leadership and outgrowing the space where they started! Each week class members bring their friends, and individuals meet to pray and play and learn deeply about Christian faith. In one year, the Aldersgate class had become a vibrant Christian community! THE ALDERSGATE CLASS The Aldersgate class formed community in a short period of time, and their experience can help classes, groups, and committees in your church. Here s how the class got started. In the spring 2002 short-term Discipleship 101 class, four young people and a newly married mid-age couple wanted to continue meeting together rather than join an existing Sunday school class. Discipleship 101 included several long-time members who heard the need for a new class. Over the summer, the education chair guided the six in forming a new class. The church prayed daily 2 that God would bring together the people who might further God s work in the world. In August, several 20- to 30-yearolds were invited in person and with letters, phone calls, and to attend a barbecue. The mid-age couple with gifts of hospitality and nurture would be class companions, and various teachers were scheduled for the fall Sundays. From the beginning, the class focused on faith formation and spirituality appropriate for the age group and the demands of the 21 st century. They focused on finding the right balance of social and spiritual activity, which included laughter and thoughtful questioning. Within a month, the mid-age couple sought help in dealing with people attracted to the new group for social reasons. It is a challenge to receive people as they are, connect them with God, nurture their faith, and send them into the world each week. One teacher introduced a ritual of opening class by lighting a candle to focus attention and remind everyone of God s presence when Christians gather; class members now continue that ritual, invite joys and concerns, and lead the class prayer. Other class members act as hosts and others contact members who were absent. Can you think of examples of rituals and shared leadership in groups in your congregation? SHARED LEADERSHIP The young people met a variety of church members who rotated as teachers. They studied the Bible, learned about the church and social issues, and explored relationship issues. Open, guided discussion classes were the most popular, as members learned to express their ideas and to trust and respect each other. The mid-age couple furthered relationship building through a variety of mid-week gatherings for planning, social activities and service projects. Class members as well offered their interests and gifts to organize these communi- (continued on page 8)

PRAYER O God of History, we gather this day as beneficiaries of those who have told us the stories of faith. We remember family members, teachers, pastors, and friends who have taught us about the faith journeys of people in the Bible and in our church history; and who have entrusted us with the faith stories of beloved members of this congregation as well as their own stories. Help us also be tellers of the faith story to one another. Amen. 6 Faith-Sharing in Community AN INTERGENERATIONAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP TIME: About 90 minutes PURPOSE: To help children, youth, and adults learn how to share stories of their faith. AUDIENCE: Participants in and leaders of your educational ministries, grades 2 through adult. PREPARATION: Set the date and time for the workshop and advertise it in at least five different ways. Encourage families and extended families to participate; help those families include and welcome children, youth, or adults who do not already belong to a church family unit. Have tables that accommodate 8 10 persons, so that more than one family group can sit together, if possible. Have on hand copies of the article on page 1; supplies for making the storytelling stick (cardboard tubes from household paper goods or 6 long wooden dowels, construction paper, scissors, glue or tape, permanent markers, other simple decorations as desired); a timer for each table group; and hymnals for closing devotions. Ask participants to bring their Bibles, but also provide at least two Bibles for each table. This workshop can be guided by one person at each table. If you share the leadership, identify table leaders in advance and give each one a copy of these instructions. LEADiNG the WORKSHOP Start the Storytelling (30 minutes) In table groups, have participants take up to one minute to introduce themselves or a table companion, even if everyone is acquainted. Encourage persons to mention one thing that is new information for the others. Use the timer to keep introductions short. (See the sidebar on page 7 for storytelling tips for the children.) Begin with Once up a time and, since our stories are ongoing, end with That s all for now. Make storytelling sticks using the tubes or dowels. [The stick does not have to be a stick, so group members may want to come up with their own creative storytelling tool.] Decorate the sticks with cut construction paper or other glue-on decorations. Leave a short space uncovered as a handle, if you wish. The sticks will be used throughout the workshop to designate who has permission to speak while others listen. the parables. Help the children do this by asking focusing questions, if necessary, about a recent Sunday school lesson story, for example. Their story could be told in question/ answer form. Present the storytelling stick to the first volunteer, who will speak and then pass the stick. After each story (no more than one minute or so), ask group members to take one more minute to say what they think is the most important point Jesus would want them to learn from it. Introduce Bible Storytelling (25 minutes) Mention that Jesus was an especially good storyteller who could use a fairly simple story to make a very deep point. Imitate Jesus by (1) retelling from memory one of your favorite parables or (2) making up an ending to one of 6

Select one of the following stories if you need help getting started: Matthew 14:13-21 (feeding 5000); 22:15-22 (paying taxes); Mark 4:1-9 (the sower); 10:17-22 (rich young man); Luke 2:41-52 (Jesus with Temple teachers); 10:25-37 (Good Samaritan). Practice Personal Storytelling (25 minutes) Ask a good reader in the table group to read Community Stories on page 7. Skim the article from page 1 as well, and summarize main points. Review the important lessons from the Bible stories and ask group members if they have had their own experience of such a lesson learned. Or, ask them either to think of one instance of awareness of God s presence and what faith lesson they found in that experience or to tell one thing they know about Jesus that they would want their best friend to know. Ask storytellers to say, if they can, why they believe it is important to share that lesson of faith. Invite volunteers to take the stick and briefly tell their story; no more than two minutes. (If all group members want to tell a story, allow only one minute each.) You may consider splitting the table group for persons who want to write down the essential elements of the story rather than say them aloud. (Journaling is good practice for organizing ideas that might be shared later.) As a blessing to each storyteller, do not evaluate or comment, but receive the story with a word of thanks, such as God bless [name] and guide [him / her] all [his / her] days. Closing Devotions (10 minutes) Invite group members to hold hands and to take turns around the table to mention one thing that they learned or found inspiring or want to pray for. Follow each response with Thank you, God, for this gift. Close with one of the hymns on page 3, followed by the Lord s Payer. COMMUNITY STORIES The Bible was written long, long ago. It is a record or story of who God is, who we are, and how God has acted with people over many centuries. What we call the Bible existed first in the form of spoken stories that families and their communities told to each other, memorized, and then retold to their children generation after generation. Finally, the stories were written down and collected. The church believes that these stories are sacred and that they tell us what we need to know about God. We don t add stories to the Bible, but God continues to relate to the community of faith, so the church has more stories about God s relationship with us. God also has a unique relationship with every person, so everyone has a different and important story to tell. STORYTELLING TIPS FOR CHILDREN Help children know what they know by using focusing questions, such as Where were you? Who was with you? What did you see there? What happened? What did you do? How did you feel about it? (or more specific questions that suggest the feelings, such as asking if the child was happy, sad, scared, tired, excited, upset). Diana L. Hynson is Director, Learning and Teaching Ministries,United Methodist General Board of Discipleship, Nashville, TN. 7

COMMUNITY IS THE KEY... (continued from page 2) ty activities and projects. How do the people in your congregation share their interests and gifts with each other? Does your teacher training include an emphasis in forming questions to invite discussion? In the larger church community, the members of the Aldersgate class have partnered with an older adult class for intergenerational learning and relationships. The class has also organized prayer partners to support the youth mission trip. They joined together for a spiritual life retreat, with a spiritual guide who raised issues of community. They addressed questions such as Who is God? Who are we? Who are we with God? Who are we with each other with God? In the context of true community, deep faith-sharing occurred. At the close of one year, with more than 40 members, they are working on a covenant. Forged in a year of living together, learning to trust, and seeking how to live, class members are exploring ideas of commitment, loyalty, obedience, responsibility, accountability, and membership in community. They are recognizing how God covenants with people. Faith-sharing, faith formation, and community these three strands weave together tightly to make us the people of God.
