FAITH BIBLE READING October 20 - November 2, 2014 Our plan is to offer each day two reading options: to read one section of Scripture, with Think About It questions and prayer pointers, or to, in addition, read 4 portions which will enable reading through the Bible in a year. The One Year Bible is our approach, and we recommend the ESV. You can buy a paper version to do your reading, a digital version for your electronic reader, or simply use your own Bible and these Scripture references. Jot down your thoughts, and bring them to Faith Group with you. Or talk over your reading with a friend! Grace to you! We recommend you have a notebook and pen for answering questions and recording your thoughts and insights. Bring this notebook with you to Faith Group for discussions and prayer times. Select a quiet place and consistent time to read and pray. We also recommend you pray for a moment before you read God s word and ask for his illumination by the power of the Holy Spirit as you read. Abbreviations: TAI Think About It PP Prayer Points MONDAY, OCTOBER 20 Read Jeremiah 35:1-36:32 TAI: In contrast to the Jews disobedience to God in earlier chapters, chapter 35 focuses on the obedience of Jonadab s children. God uses them as an example of how the Jews should obey Him. Notice the call to repentance in verse 15 that was given through the prophets. What was the cost of their disobedience? What was the reward for Jonadab s children s obedience? What is our reward for Christ s obedience? How does chapter 36 describe how repentance is not a merit, but rather a condition of freedom from God s wrath? How does this reflect on how we receive God s gift of salvation today? How did King Jehoiakim s response to God s word through Jeremiah differ from the response of the King s officials? What did God say was the consequence? How does our nation respond similarly to God s word today? PP: Pray that we would be a people of daily repentance. Ask God to give us a holy fear and reverence fop His word. Pray for boldness to tell others the truth even when our personal cost is high. Ask the Lord to give you the desire to read, study and apply his word on a daily basis! Pray for leaders to rightly apply God s truth and not be hardened toward Him. Praise God for Jesus obedience that provided our salvation! Additional readings: 1 Timothy 5:1-25, Psalm 89:14-37, Proverbs 25:25-27 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21 Read Jeremiah 37:1-38:28 TAI: More disobedience fills these verses. How did God use the Chaldeans to accomplish His goals? Notice the cost for Jeremiah s obedience and faithfulness to God (37:13, 15, 16 and 38:6). How did God care for Jeremiah through his trials? What is His promise to us as we encounter trials? Why was Zedekiah so interested in hearing God s word, yet so quick to disobey? PP: Praise God for He will ultimately deliver His people from their trials! Thank Him for Jesus today! Ask Him for strength and endurance to be a faithful servant. Praise Him for his word! Additional readings: 1 Timothy 6:1-21, Psalm 89:38-52, Proverbs 25:28
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22 Read Jeremiah 39:1-41:18 TAI: What happened to King Zedekiah and Jerusalem by the Babylonians as a result of his disobedience? How is 39:15-18 a picture of the Gospel? Why do you think that the pagan captain (40:2-3) understood God s judgment better than the leaders of Judah? Why did God allow a remnant to prosper? (40:9-12) Notice what happened when Johanan s warning of Ishmael s death plot went unheeded. How is this similar to the consequences of our sin? PP: Praise God for the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ! Because of what Jesus did on your behalf, you will not experience the punishment for sin that you deserve! Thank God for His word and how it communicates God s sovereign plan fulfilled in Christ. Thank Him for His divine and eternal protection. Ask Him to see His grace to be more amazing each day! Additional readings: 2 Timothy 1:1-18, Psalm 90:1-91:16, Proverbs 26:1-2 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23 Read Jeremiah 42:1-44:23 TAI: Where do you see the Gospel in chapter 42? How was the remnant s desire to be obedient reflective of Jesus obedience? What do we learn about God in these three chapters? Why did God warn the remnant not to go into Egypt? Why didn t the people believe Jeremiah concerning God s warnings? What do we learn about the human heart in these chapters? PP: Thank God for His grace and mercy! Praise Him for once you too were disobedient and deserving of His wrath and judgment. Now, in Christ, you are free and under His favor! Thank Him for the faith you have for it is a gift from God! Pray for those on your Sacred 7 list to repent and believe the Gospel! Additional readings: 2 Timothy 2:1-21, Psalm 92:1-93:5, Proverbs 26:3-5 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24 Read Jeremiah 44:24-47:7 TAI: What does God promise He will do to let the remnant know that it is His word that will stand and not theirs? How do these chapters reflect God s hatred toward sin and His justice? What do you learn about God s character and nature in these chapters? How can what is recorded here help you to better appreciate the Gospel and God s sovereign plan? PP: Thank God for His word! Praise Him for His kindness and mercy as well as His justice. Ask Him to reveal to you more of Who He is through His word each day. Pray for our church leaders, teachers and all that make up the body to know God and trust Him on a deeper level today. Additional Readings: 2 Timothy 2:22-3:17, Psalm 94:1-23, Proverbs 26:6-8
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25 Read Jeremiah 48:1-49:22 TAI: Remember the Moabites were descendants of Lot; they often fought with Israel. What do you recall about Moabites that were significant to Jesus lineage? (See Ruth) Who was Chemosh? What was God doing to Moab in chapter 48, verses 11-16? What was God accomplishing here? Edom descended from Esau. Esau s sin was severe (Hebrews 12:15-17) and his descendants paid the price. PP: Praise God that because of Jesus, He does not hold our sin against us! Thank Him for His word that progressively points toward the cross. Ask Him to reveal any sin in your life that is grieving the Holy Spirit. Pray for those that you know are trapped in sin and ask for them to cry out to God for forgiveness. Pray for Pastor Dana as he prepares to speak from God s word tomorrow. Additional Readings: 2 Timothy 4:1-22, Psalm 95:1-96:13, Proverbs 26:9-12 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26 Read Jeremiah 49:23-50:46 TAI: What would you say is the main point of today s text? How is the everlasting covenant revealed in Jesus Christ? (31:31-34, Romans 11:16-27) Notice the Gospel in Jeremiah 50:20. Do you see hints of the Gospel anywhere else in today s text? (50:33-34) PP: Thank God for the Gospel today that has brought us salvation. Pray today for our pastors, elders and ministry leaders. Ask God to continue to use them to exalt Christ in all they do. Prepare for this week by asking the Lord to continually fill you with His Spirit and to be a light to those around you in your family and beyond! Additional Readings: Titus 1:1-16, Psalm 97:1-98:9, Proverbs 26:13-16 MONDAY, OCTOBER 27 Read Jeremiah 51:1-53 TAI: What do you learn about God and His character in these verses? List some of His attributes mentioned here. How do these help you or challenge you today? How do these compare to the nature and character of people? How dis God use other nations for His purposes? PP: Recall God s attributes from today s text and praise Him for who He is! Thank Him that you will not experience His wrath punishment because of Jesus completed work on the cross! Thank Him that He is sovereign and that He works all things for His glory and your good! Additional readings: Titus 2:1-15, Psalm 99:1-9, Proverbs 26:17 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28
Read Jeremiah 51:54-52:34 TAI: As you reflect on the entire book, what have you learned from Jeremiah? Recall that God rejects our worship when we reject His word. How is our culture similar to that which is described in the book of Jeremiah? How accurate were Jeremiah s prophecies? What idols do you have that must be put away? PP: Praise God for His forgiveness through the cross! Pray for our country to reject its idols, repent of sin and turn to Christ. Pray for our missionaries that proclaim this Gospel of forgiveness around the world. Pray for strength, encouragement and that the Spirit of glory will rest upon them in difficult times. Pray about your own opportunities to share Christ. (Consider putting Gospel tracts in bags along with candy this coming Friday!) Additional readings: Titus 3:1-15, Psalm 100:1-5, Proverbs 26:18-19 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29 Read Philemon 1:1-25 TAI: This brief letter from the Apostle Paul regards a recently converted slave named Onesimus. Shortly before his conversion to Christianity, he had stolen from his master, Philemon and ran away. Now, Paul pleads with Philemon to forgive Onesimus and welcome him back as a Christian brother. How do you see the Gospel informing Paul as he wrote this letter? What themes are present in this letter? What is Paul pleading to accomplish and why? PP: Ask God to allow the sharing of your faith to be effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ. Pray for God to use you too to refresh the hearts of others. Ask him if there is unforgiveness in your own heart that needs to be confessed. Thank Him for the cross that makes all this possible! Additional readings: Lamentations 1:1-2:22, Psalm 101:1-8, Proverbs 26:20 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30 Read Hebrews 1:1-14 TAI: How many ways can you recall that God used to communicate in the Old Testament? How does He speak to us today? What do these verses tell us about Jesus? Make a list. How do these things about Jesus encourage you today? Where do you see the Gospel in these verses? How did Jesus make purification for sins and how does this foreshadow that will be discussed in later chapters? What Why do you think the writer compares Jesus to angels? PP: Praise God for the supremacy of Jesus! Praise Him for His word! Thank Him for Christ and that He upholds the universe by the word of His power! Remember that He is in control of everything, from the smallest detail to the placement of the stars! Additional readings: Lamentations 3:1-66, Psalm 102:1-28, Proverbs 26:21-22 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31
Read Hebrews 2:1-18 TAI: What is the reason for the therefore in verse 1? What does the author want his audience to pay attention to, less they drift away? When is drifting way a temptation for you? What is the author s remedy for drifting away? Is there significance to the word we since it is used so often? Why? What is the importance of understanding disobedience of the Old Covenant, declared by angels and the New Covenant, that is in Christ? Why did Jesus have to be like us and not the angels? What does propitiation mean? How does the fact that Jesus was tempted, help us in our temptation? PP: Ask the Lord to keep you from distractions and from losing your focus on Christ. Thank Him for Jesus s suffering and that because of His suffering, we have eternal life! Pray for our congregation to stay focused on Christ. Remember that Jesus was tempted and able to help us in our weaknesses. Ask the Lord to strengthen you in times that you are most likely to be tempted. Additional Readings: Lamentations 4:1-5:22, Psalm 103:1-22, Proverbs 26:23 SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1 Read Hebrews 3:1-19 TAI: Jesus is now introduced as high priest. What was the role of this office in the Old Testament? Why is this important that Jesus fulfilled this office? How is Jesus a better Moses? What is the result of an evil and unbelieving heart? How are we to avoid this type of heart and how often are we to do it? Notice that verse 8 is repeated in verse 15, why do you think this is so? How do these verses treat how God views sin? PP: Pray for hearts of those on your Sacred 7 list that they are not hardened, but softened to the Gospel of Christ. Thank God that Jesus is our high priest! Pray for a spirit of exhortation among our body at Faith Baptist. Tomorrow our focus is on praying for the persecuted church. Please pray for those that share our faith, but not our freedom! Additional Readings: Ezekiel 1:1-3:15, Psalm 104:1-23, Proverbs 26:24-26 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2 Read Hebrews 4:1-16 TAI: How does the Sabbath rest in the Old Testament foreshadow Jesus? What are we to rest from? Have you entered that rest? What do we learn about the word of God in verses 12-13? How can we apply this truth? Notice that Jesus was tempted, yet without sin. Why is this important? Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses. How does this encourage you today? How should this be impacting your prayer life on a deeper level? PP: God is still inviting people to enter in the rest He provides through Jesus. Praise Him for that today and ask for His grace to be ready to share that message of hope with others! Thank Him for His word that is living and active. Pray for strength to apply His word to your daily life! Pray with boldness because of Jesus we can draw near to the throne of grace! Additional Readings: Ezekiel 3:16-6:14, Psalm 104:24-35, Proverbs 26:27
