1 DOCTRINAL POSITION (Chapters 1-18,32-33) WESTMINSTER CONFESSION OF FAITH Chapter 1: Of the Holy Scripture 1:1 Although the light of nature and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men unexcusable (Psa_19:1-3; Rom_1:19, Rom_1:20, Rom_1:32; Rom_2:1, Rom_2:14, Rom_2:15) ; yet they are not sufficient to give that knowledge of God and of His will, which is necessary unto salvation (1Co_1:21; 1Co_2:13, 1Co_2:14). Therefore it pleased the Lord, at sundry times, and in diverse manners, to reveal Himself, and to declare that His will unto His Church (Heb_1:1) ; and afterwards, for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing (Pro_22:19-21; Isa_8:19, Isa_8:20; Mat_4:4, Mat_4:7, Mat_4:10; Luk_1:3, Luk_1:4; Rom_15:4) ; which maketh the Holy Scripture to be most necessary (2Ti_3:15; 2Pe_1:19) ; those former ways of God s revealing His will unto His people being now ceased (Heb_1:1, Heb_1:2). 1:2 Under the name of Holy Scripture, or the Word of God written, are now contained all the books of the Old and New Testament, which are these: Of the Old Testament Genesis II Chronicles Daniel Exodus Ezra Hosea Leviticus Nehemiah Joel Numbers Esther Amos Deuteronomy Job Obadiah Joshua Psalms Jonah Judges Proverbs Micah Ruth Ecclesiastes Nahum I Samuel The Song of Songs Habakkuk II Samuel Isaiah Zephaniah I Kings Jeremiah Haggai II Kings Lamentations Zechariah I Chronicles Ezekiel Malachi Of the New Testament Matthew Ephesians Hebrews Mark Philippians James Luke Colossians I Peter John I Thessalonians II Peter Acts of the Apostles II Thessalonians I John Romans I Timothy II John I Corinthians II Timothy III John II Corinthians Titus Jude Galatians Philemon Revelation

2 (Luk_16:29, Luk_16:31; Eph_2:20; 2Ti_3:16; All which are given by inspiration of God to be the rule of faith and life Rev_22:18, Rev_22:19). 1:3 The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon of the Scripture; and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings (Luk_24:27, Luk_24:44; Rom_3:2; 2Pe_1:21). 1:4 The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed and obeyed, dependeth not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received because it is the Word of God (1Th_2:13; 2Ti_3:16; 2Pe_1:19, 2Pe_1:21; 1Jo_5:9) 1:5 We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the Church to a high and reverent esteem of the Holy Scripture (1Ti_3:15). And the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole (which is, to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man s salvation, the many other incomparable excellencies, and the entire perfection thereof, are arguments whereby it doth abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God: yet notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth and divine authority thereof, is (Isa_59:21; Joh_16:13, from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts Joh_16:14;1Co_2:10-12; 1Jo_2:20, 1Jo_2:27). 1:6 The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for His own glory, man s salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit, or traditions of men (Gal_1:8, Gal_1:9; 2Th_2:2; 2Ti_3:15-17). Nevertheless we acknowledge the inward illumination of the Spirit of God to be necessary for the saving understanding of such things as are revealed in the Word (Joh_6:45; 1Co_2:9, 1Co_2:10, 1Co_2:12) : and that there are some circumstances concerning the worship of God, and government of the Church, common to human actions and societies, which are to be ordered by the light of nature and Christian prudence, according to the general rules of the Word, which are always to be observed (1Co_11:13, 1Co_11:14; 1Co_14:26, 1Co_14:40). 1:7 All things in Scripture are not alike in plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all (2Pe_3:16) : yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed for salvation, are so clearly propounded and opened in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of the ordinary means, may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them (Psa_119:105, Psa_119:130). 1:8 The Old Testament in Hebrew (which was the native language of the people of God of old), and the New Testament in Greek (which at the time of writing of it was most generally known to the nations), being immediately inspired by God, and by His singular care and providence kept pure in all ages, are therefore authentical (Mat_5:18) ; so as, in all

3 controversies of religion, the Church is finally to appeal unto them (Isa_8:20; Joh_5:39, Joh_5:46; Act_15:15). But, because these original tongues are not known to all the people of God, who have right unto, and interest in the Scriptures, and are commanded, in the fear of God, to read and search them (Joh_5:39), therefore they are to be translated into the vulgar language of every nation unto which they come (1Co_14:6, 1Co_14:9, 1Co_14:11, 1Co_14:12, 1Co_14:24, 1Co_14:27, 1Co_14:28), that the Word of God dwelling plentifully in all, they may worship Him in an acceptable manner (Col_3:16) ; and, through patience and comfort of the Scriptures, may have hope (Rom_15:4). 1:9 The infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself: and therefore, when there is a question about the true and full sense of any Scripture (which is not manifold, but one), it must be searched and known by other places that speak more clearly (Act_15:15; 2Pe_1:20, 2Pe_1:21). 1:10 The supreme judge by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits, are to be examined; and in whose sentence we are to rest; can be no other but the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture (Mat_22:29, Mat_22:31; Act_28:25; Eph_2:20). Chapter 2: Of God, and of the Holy Trinity 2:1 There is but one only (Deu_6:4; 1Co_8:4, 1Co_8:6) living, and true God (Jer_10:10; 1Th_1:9) : who is infinite in being and perfection (Job_11:7-9, Job_26:14), a most pure spirit (Joh_4:24), invisible (1Ti_1:17), without body, parts (Deu_4:15, Deu_4:16; Luk_24:39; Joh_4:24), or passions (Act_14:11, Act_14:15), immutable (Mal_3:6; Jam_1:17), immense (1Ki_8:27; Jer_23:23, Jer_23:24), eternal (Psa_90:2; 1Ti_1:17), incomprehensible (Psa_145:3), almighty (Gen_17:1; Rev_4:8), most wise (Rom_16:27), most holy (Isa_6:3; Rev_4:8), most free (Psa_115:3), most absolute (Exo_3:14), working all things according to the counsel of His own immutable and most righteous will (Eph_1:11), for His own glory (Pro_16:4; Rom_11:36) ; most loving (1Jo_4:8, 1Jo_4:16), gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin (Exo_34:6, Exo_34:7) ; the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him (Heb_11:6) ; and with all most just and terrible in His judgments (Neh_9:32, Neh_9:33), hating all sin (Psa_5:5, Psa_5:6), and who will by no means clear the guilty (Exo_34:7; Nah_1:2, Nah_1:3). 2:2 God hath all life (Joh_5:26), glory (Act_7:2), goodness (Psa_119:68), blessedness (Rom_9:5; 1Ti_6:15), in and of Himself; and is alone in and unto Himself all-sufficient, not standing in need of any creatures which He hath made (Act_17:24, Act_17:25), not deriving any glory from them (Job_22:2, Job_22:23), but only manifesting His own glory in, by, unto, and upon them: He is the alone fountain of all being, of whom, through whom, and to whom are all things (Rom_11:36) ; and hath most sovereign dominion over them, to do by them, for them, or upon them whatsoever Himself pleaseth (Dan_4:25, Dan_4:35; 1Ti_6:15; Rev_4:11). In His sight all things are open and manifest (Heb_4:13) ; His knowledge is infinite, infallible, and independent upon the creature (Psa_147:5; Rom_11:33, Rom_11:34), so as nothing is to Him contingent, or uncertain (Eze_11:5; Act_15:18). He is most holy in all His counsels, in all

4 His works, and in all his commands Psa_145:17; Rom_7:12). To Him is due from angels and men, and every other creature, whatsoever worship, service, or obedience he is pleased to require of them (Rev_5:12-14). 2:3 In the unity of the Godhead there be three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost (Mat_3:16, Mat_3:17; Mat_28:19; 2Co_13:14; 1Jo_5:7). The Father is of none, neither begotten, nor proceeding: the Son is eternally begotten of the Father: the Holy Ghost eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son (Joh_1:14, Joh_1:18). Chapter 3: Of God s Eternal Decree 3:1 God from all eternity did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass (Rom_9:15, Rom_9:18; Rom_11:33; Eph_1:11; Heb_6:17) : yet so, as thereby neither is God the author of sin (Jam_1:13, Jam_1:17; 1Jo_1:5), nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures, nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established Act_4:28). (Pro_16:33; Mat_17:12; Joh_19:11; Act_2:23; Act_4:27, 3:2 Although God knows whatsoever may or can come to pass upon all supposed conditions (Mat_11:21, Mat_11:23; Act_15:18; 1Sa_23:11, 1Sa_23:12), yet hath He not decreed any thing because He foresaw it as future, or as that which would come to pass upon such conditions (Rom_9:11, Rom_9:13, Rom_9:16, Rom_9:18). 3:3 By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels (Mat_25:41; 1Ti_5:21) are predestinated unto everlasting life, and others fore-ordained to everlasting death Eph_1:5, Eph_1:6). (Pro_16:4; Rom_9:22, Rom_9:23; 3:4 These angels and men, thus predestinated and fore-ordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed, and their number is so certain and definite, that it cannot be either increased or diminished (Joh_13:18; 2Ti_2:19). 3:5 Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to His eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, hath chosen, in Christ, unto everlasting glory (Rom_8:30; Eph_1:4, Eph_1:9, Eph_1:11; 1Th_5:9; 2Ti_1:9), out of His mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving Him thereunto Eph_1:9) : and all to the praise of His glorious grace (Eph_1:6, Eph_1:12). (Rom_9:11, Rom_9:13, Rom_9:16; Eph_1:4, 3:6 As God hath appointed the elect unto glory, so hath He, by the eternal and most free purpose of His will, fore-ordained all the means thereunto (Eph_1:4, Eph_1:5; Eph_2:10; 2Th_2:13; 1Pe_1:2). Wherefore they who are

5 elected, being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Christ (1Th_5:9, 1Th_5:10; Tit_2:14), are effectually called unto faith in Christ by His Spirit working in due season, are justified, adopted, sanctified (Rom_8:30; Eph_1:5; 2Th_2:13), and kept by His power through faith unto salvation (1Pe_1:5). Neither are any other redeemed by Christ, effectually called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect only Joh_17:9; Rom_8:28-39; 1Jo_2:19). (Joh_6:64, Joh_6:65; Joh_8:47; Joh_10:26; 3:7 The rest of mankind God was pleased, according to the unsearchable counsel of His own will, whereby He extendeth or withholdeth mercy, as He pleaseth, for the glory of His sovereign power over His creatures, to pass by; and to ordain them to dishonour and wrath, for their sin, to the praise of His glorious justice (Mat_11:25, Mat_11:26; Rom_9:17, Rom_9:18, Rom_9:21, Rom_9:22; 2Ti_2:19, 2Ti_2:20; 1Pe_2:8; Jud_1:4). 3:8 The doctrine of this high mystery of predestination is to be handled with special prudence and care (Deu_29:29; Rom_9:20; Rom_11:33), that men attending the will of God revealed in His Word, and yielding obedience thereunto, may, from the certainty of their effectual vocation, be assured of their eternal election (2Pe_1:10). So shall this doctrine afford matter of praise, reverence, and admiration of God (Rom_11:33; Eph_1:6), and of humility, diligence, and abundant consolation to all that sincerely obey the Gospel Rom_11:6, Rom_11:20; 2Pe_1:10). (Luk_10:20; Rom_8:33; Rom_11:5, Chapter 4: Of Creation 4:1 It pleased God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (Gen_1:2; Job_26:13; Job_33:4; Joh_1:2, Joh_1:3; Heb_1:2), for the manifestation of the glory of His eternal power, wisdom, and goodness (Psa_33:5, Psa_33:6; Psa_104:24; Jer_10:12; Rom_1:20), in the beginning, to create, or make of nothing, the world, and all things therein whether visible or invisible, in the space of six days; and all very good (Gen 1:1-50:26; Act_17:24; Col_1:16; Heb_11:3). 4:2 After God had made all other creatures, He created man, male and female (Gen_1:27), with reasonable and immortal souls (Gen_2:7; Ecc_12:7; Mat_10:28; Luk_23:43), endued with knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness, after His own image (Gen_1:26; Eph_4:24; Col_3:10) ; having the law of God written in their hearts (Rom_2:14, Rom_2:15), and power to fulfil it (Ecc_7:29) ; and yet under a possibility of transgressing, being left to the liberty of their own will, which was subject unto change (Gen_3:6; Ecc_7:29). Beside this law written in their hearts, they received a command, not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which while they kept, they were happy in their communion with God (Gen_2:17; Gen_3:8-11, Gen_3:23), and had dominion over the creatures (Gen_1:26, Gen_1:28). Chapter 5: Of Providence 5:1 God the great Creator of all things doth uphold (Heb_1:3), direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things (Job 38:1-41:34; Psa_135:6; Dan_4:34, Dan_4:35; Act_17:25, Act_17:26, Act_17:28), from the greatest even to the

6 least (Mat_10:29-31), by His most wise and holy providence (Psa_104:24; Psa_145:17; Pro_15:3), according to His infallible fore-knowledge (Psa_94:8-11; Act_15:18), and the free and immutable counsel of His own will Eph_1:11), to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy Isa_63:14; Rom_9:17; Eph_3:10). (Psa_33:10, Psa_33:11; (Gen_45:7; Psa_145:7; 5:2 Although, in relation to the fore-knowledge and decree of God, the first Cause, all things come to pass immutably, and infallibly (Act_2:23) : yet, by the same providence, He ordereth them to fall out, according to the nature of second causes, either necessarily, freely, or contingently 1Ki_22:34; Isa_10:6, Isa_10:7; Jer_31:35). (Gen_8:22; Exo_21:13; Deu_19:5; 1Ki_22:28, 5:3 God in His ordinary providence maketh use of means (Isa_55:10, Isa_55:11; Hos_2:21, Hos_2:22; Act_27:31, Act_27:44), yet is free to work without (Job_34:10; Hos_1:7; Mat_4:4), above (Rom_4:19-21), and against them at His pleasure (2Ki_6:6; Dan_3:27). 5:4 The almighty power, unsearchable wisdom, and infinite goodness of God so far manifest themselves in His providence, that it extendeth itself even to the first fall, and all other sins of angels and men (2Sa_16:10; 2Sa_24:1; 1Ki_22:22, 1Ki_22:23; 1Ch_10:4, 1Ch_10:13, 1Ch_10:14; 1Ch_21:1; Act_2:23; Act_4:27, Act_4:28; Rom_11:32-34) ; and that not by a bare permission (Act_14:16), but such as hath joined with it a most wise and powerful bounding (2Ki_19:29; Psa_76:10), and otherwise ordering and governing of them, in a manifold dispensation, to His own holy ends (Gen_1:20; Isa_10:6, Isa_10:7, Isa_10:12) ; yet so, as the sinfulness thereof proceedeth only from the creature, and not from God, who, being most holy and righteous, neither, is nor can be, the author or approver of sin (Psa_50:21; Jam_1:13, Jam_1:14, Jam_1:17; 1Jo_2:16). 5:5 The most wise, righteous, and gracious God doth oftentimes leave for a season His own children to manifold temptations, and the corruption of their own hearts, to chastise them for their former sins, or to discover unto them the hidden strength of corruption, and deceitfulness of their hearts, that they may be humbled (2Sa_24:1; 2Ch_32:25, 2Ch_32:26, 2Ch_32:31) ; and, to raise them to a more close and constant dependence for their support unto) Himself, and to make them more watchful against all future occasions of sin, and for sundry other just and holy ends (Psa 73:1-28; Psa_77:1-10, Psa_77:12; Mar_14:66-72; Joh_21:15-17; 2Co_12:7-9). 5:6 As for those wicked and ungodly men whom God, as a righteous Judge, for former sins doth blind and harden (Rom_1:24, Rom_1:26, Rom_1:28; Rom_11:7, Rom_11:8), from them He not only withholdeth His grace, whereby they might have been enlightened in their understandings, and wrought upon in their hearts (Deu_29:4) ; but sometimes also withdraweth the gifts which they had (Mat_13:12; Mat_25:29), and exposeth them to such objects as their corruption makes occasions of sin (Deu_2:30; 2Ki_8:12, 2Ki_8:13) ; and, withal, gives them over to their own lusts, the temptations of the world, and the power of Satan (Psa_81:11, Psa_81:12; 2Th_2:10-12) ; whereby it comes to pass that they harden themselves, even under those means which God useth for the softening of others (Exo_7:3; Exo_8:15, Exo_8:32; Isa_6:9, Isa_6:10; Isa_8:14; Act_28:26, Act_28:27; 2Co_2:15, 2Co_2:16; 1Pe_2:7, 1Pe_2:8).

7 5:7 As the providence of God doth in general reach to all creatures, so after a most special manner it taketh care of His Church, and disposeth all things to the good thereof 1Ti_4:10). (Isa_43:3-5, Isa_43:14; Amo_9:8, Amo_9:9; Rom_8:28; Chapter 6: Of the Fall of Man, of Sin, and of the Punishment Thereof 6:1 Our first parents, being seduced by the subtilty and temptation of Satan, sinned in eating the forbidden fruit (Gen_3:13; 2Co_11:3). This their sin God was pleased, according to His wise and holy counsel, to permit, having purposed to order it to His own glory (Rom_11:32). 6:2 By this sin they fell from their original righteousness and communion with God (Gen_3:6-8; Ecc_7:29; Rom_3:23), and so became dead in sin (Gen_2:17; Eph_2:1), and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of soul and body (Gen_6:5; Jer_17:9; Rom_3:10-19; Tit_1:15). 6:3 They being the root of all mankind (Gen_1:27, Gen_1:28; Gen_2:16, Gen_2:17; Act_17:26; Rom_5:12, Rom_5:15-19; 1Co_15:21, 1Co_15:22, 1Co_15:45, 1Co_15:49), the guilt of this sin was imputed, and the same death in sin and corrupted nature conveyed, to all their posterity descending from them by ordinary generation (Gen_5:3; Job_14:4; Job_15:14; Psa_51:5). 6:4 From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good (Rom_5:6; Rom_7:18; Rom_8:7; Col_1:21), and wholly inclined to all evil (Gen_6:5; Gen_8:21; Rom_3:10-12), do proceed all actual transgressions (Mat_15:19; Eph_2:2, Eph_2:3; Jam_1:14, Jam_1:15). 6:5 This corruption of nature, during this life, doth remain in those that are regenerated (Pro_20:9; Ecc_7:20; Rom_7:14, Rom_7:17, Rom_7:18, Rom_7:23; Jam_3:2; 1Jo_1:8, 1Jo_1:10) ; and although it be, through Christ, pardoned and mortified, yet both itself and all the motions thereof are truly and properly sin Gal_5:17). (Rom_7:5, Rom_7:7, Rom_7:8, Rom_7:25; 6:6 Every sin, both original and actual, being a transgression of the righteous law of God, and contrary thereunto (1Jo_3:4), doth, in its own nature, bring guilt upon the sinner (Rom_2:15; Rom_3:9, Rom_3:19) ; whereby he is bound over to the wrath of God (Eph_2:3), and curse of the law (Gal_3:10), and so made subject to death (Rom_6:23), with all miseries spiritual (Eph_4:18), temporal (Lam_3:39; Rom_8:20), and eternal (Mat_25:41; 2Th_1:9). Chapter 7: Of God s Covenant with Man 7:1 The distance between God and the creature is so great, that although reasonable creatures do owe obedience unto Him as their Creator, yet they could never have any fruition of Him as their blessedness and reward, but by some voluntary condescension on God s part, which He hath been pleased to express by way of covenant Luk_17:10; Act_17:24, Act_17:25). (1Sa_2:25; Job_9:32, Job_9:33; Job_22:2, Job_22:3; Job_35:7, Job_35:8; Psa_100:2, Psa_100:3; Psa_118:5, Psa_118:6; Isa_40:13-17;

8 7:2 The first covenant made with man was a covenant of works Gal_3:12), wherein life was promised to Adam, and in him to his posterity (Rom_5:12-20; Rom_10:5), upon condition of perfect and personal obedience (Gen_2:17; Gal_3:10). 7:3 Man, by his fall having made himself incapable of life by that covenant, the Lord was pleased to make a second (Gen_3:15; Isa_42:6; Rom_3:20, Rom_3:21; Rom_8:3; Gal_3:21), commonly called the covenant of grace; wherein He freely offereth unto sinners life and salvation by Jesus Christ, requiring of them faith in Him that they may be saved (Mar_16:15, Mar_16:16; Joh_3:16; Rom_10:6, Rom_10:9; Gal_3:11), and promising to give unto all those that are ordained unto life His Holy Spirit, to make them willing and able to believe (Eze_36:26, Eze_36:27; Joh_6:44, Joh_6:45). 7:4 This covenant of grace is frequently set forth in Scripture by the name of a Testament, in reference to the death of Jesus Christ the Testator, and to the everlasting inheritance, with all things belonging to it, therein bequeathed (Luk_22:20; 1Co_11:25; Heb_7:22; Heb_9:15-17). 7:5 This covenant was differently administered in the time of the law, and in the time of the gospel (2Co_3:6-9) : under the law, it was administered by promises, prophecies, sacrifices, circumcision, the paschal lamb, and other types and ordinances delivered to the people of the Jews, all fore-signifying Christ to come (Rom_4:11; 1Co_5:7; Col_2:11, Col_2:13; Heb 8:1-10:29) : which were, for that time, sufficient and efficacious, through the operation of the Spirit, to instruct and build up the elect in faith in the promised Messiah (Joh_8:56; 1Co_10:1-4; Heb_11:13), by whom they had full remission of sins, and eternal salvation; and is called, the Old Testament (Gal_3:7-9, Gal_3:14). 7:6 Under the gospel, when Christ, the substance (Gal_2:17), was exhibited, the ordinances in which this covenant is dispensed are the preaching of the Word, and the administration of the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord s Supper (Mat_28:19, Mat_28:20; 1Co_11:23-25) : which, though fewer in number, and administered with more simplicity, and less outward glory; yet, in them, it is held forth in more fulness, evidence, and spiritual efficacy (Jer_31:33, Jer_31:34; Heb_12:22-28), to all nations, both Jews and Gentiles; and is called the New Testament. There are not therefore two covenants of grace, differing in substance, but one and the same, under various dispensations Rom_4:23, Rom_4:24; Gal_3:14, Gal_3:16; Heb_13:8). (Psa_32:1; Act_15:11; Rom_3:21-23; Rom_4:3, Rom_4:6, Rom_4:16, Rom_4:17, Chapter 8: Of Christ the Mediator 8:1 It pleased God, in His eternal purpose, to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus, His only begotten Son, to be the Mediator between God and man (Isa_42:1; Joh_3:16; 2Ti_2:5; 1Pe_1:19, 1Pe_1:20) ; the Prophet (Act_3:22), Priest (Heb_5:5, Heb_5:6), and King (Psa_2:6; Luk_1:33), the Head and Saviour of His Church (Eph_5:23), the Heir of all things (Heb_1:2), and Judge of the world (Act_17:31) : unto whom He did from all eternity give a people, to be His seed

9 (Psa_22:30; Isa_53:10; Joh_17:6), and to be by Him in time redeemed, called, justified, sanctified, and glorified (Isa_55:4, Isa_55:5; 1Co_1:30; 1Ti_2:6). 8:2 The Son of God, the second person in the Trinity, being very and eternal God, of one substance and equal with the Father, did, when the fulness of time was come, take upon Him man s nature (Joh_1:1, Joh_1:14; Gal_4:4; Phi_2:6; 1Jo_5:20), with all the essential properties and common infirmities thereof, yet without sin (Heb_2:14, Heb_2:16, Heb_2:17; Heb_4:15) : being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the virgin Mary, of her substance (Luk_1:27, Luk_1:31, Luk_1:35; Gal_4:4). So that two whole, perfect, and distinct natures, the Godhead and the manhood, were inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition, or confusion (Luk_1:35; Rom_9:5; Col_2:9; 1Ti_3:16; 1Pe_3:18). Which person is very God, and very man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man (Rom_1:3, Rom_1:4; 1Ti_2:5). 8:3 The Lord Jesus, in His human nature thus united to the divine, was sanctified, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, above measure (Psa_45:7; Joh_3:34), having in Him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col_2:3) ; in whom it pleased the Father that all fulness should dwell (Col_1:19) ; to the end that, being holy, harmless, undefiled, and full of grace and truth (Joh_1:14; Heb_7:26), He might be thoroughly furnished to execute the office of a mediator and surety (Act_10:38; Heb_7:22; Heb_12:24). Which office He took not unto Himself, but was thereunto called by His Father (Heb_5:4, Heb_5:5), who put all power and judgment into His hand, and gave Him commandment to execute the same (Mat_28:18, Joh_5:22, Joh_5:27; Act_2:36). 8:4 This office the Lord Jesus did most willingly undertake (Psa_40:7, Psa_40:8; Joh_10:18; Phi_2:8; Heb_10:5-10) ; which that He might discharge, He was made under the law (Gal_4:4), and did perfectly fulfill it (Mat_3:15; Mat_5:17), endured most grievous torments immediately in His soul (Mat_26:37, Mat_26:38; Mat_27:46; Luk_22:44), and most painful sufferings in His body (Matt 26:1-27:66) ; was crucified, and died (Phi_2:8) ; was buried, and remained under the power of death; yet saw no corruption (Act_2:23, Act_2:24, Act_2:27; Act_13:37; Rom_6:9). On the third day He arose from the dead (1Co_15:3, 1Co_15:4), with the same body in which He suffered (Joh_20:25, Joh_20:27), with which also He ascended into heaven, and there sitteth at the right hand of His Father (Mar_16:19), making intercession (Rom_8:34; Heb_7:25; Heb_9:24), and shall return to judge men and angels at the end of the world Act_10:42; Rom_14:9, Rom_14:10; 2Pe_2:4; Jud_1:6). (Mat_13:40-42; Act_1:11; 8:5 The Lord Jesus, by His perfect obedience, and sacrifice of Himself, which He, through the eternal Spirit, once offered up unto God, hath fully satisfied the justice of His Father (Rom_3:25, Rom_3:26; Rom_5:19; Eph_5:2; Heb_9:14, Heb_9:16; Heb_10:14) ; and purchased, not only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father hath given unto him (Dan_9:24, Dan_9:26; Joh_17:2; Eph_1:11, Eph_1:14; Col_1:19, Col_1:20; Heb_9:12, Heb_9:15). 8:6 Although the work of redemption was not actually wrought by Christ till after His incarnation, yet the virtue, efficacy, and benefits thereof were communicated unto the elect in all ages successively from the

10 beginning of the world, in and by those promises, types, and sacrifices, wherein He was revealed, and signified to be the seed of the woman which should bruise the serpent s head; and the Lamb slain from the beginning of the world: being yesterday and to-day the same, and for ever Rev_13:8). (Gen 3;15; Gal_4:4, Gal_4:5; Heb_13:8; 8:7 Christ, in the work of mediation, acteth according to both natures, by each nature doing that which is proper to itself (Heb_9:14; 1Pe_3:18) : yet, by reason of the unity of the person, that which is proper to one nature, is sometimes in Scripture attributed to the person denominated by the other nature (Joh_3:13; Act_20:28; 1Jo_3:16). 8:8 To all those for whom Christ hath purchased redemption, He doth certainly and effectually apply and communicate the same (Joh_5:37, Joh_5:39; Joh_10:15, Joh_10:16), making intercession for them (Rom_8:34; 1Jo_2:1, 1Jo_2:2), and revealing unto them, in and by the Word, the mysteries of salvation (Joh_15:13, Joh_15:15; Joh_17:6; Eph_1:7-9), effectually persuading them by His Spirit to believe and obey, and governing their hearts by His Word and Spirit (Joh_14:16; Joh_17:17; Rom_8:9, Rom_8:14; Rom_15:18, Rom_15:19; 2Co_4:13; Heb_12:2), overcoming all their enemies by His almighty power and wisdom, in such manner, and ways, as are most consonant to His wonderful and unsearchable dispensation (Psa_105:1; Mal_4:2, Mal_4:3; 1Co_15:25, 1Co_15:26; Col_2:15). Chapter 9: Of Free Will 9:1 God hath endued the will of man with that natural liberty, that is neither forced, nor by any absolute necessity of nature determined to good or evil (Deu_30:19; Mat_17:12; Jam_1:14). 9:2 Man, in his state of innocency, had freedom and power to will and to do that which was good, and well pleasing to God (Gen_1:26; Ecc_7:29) ; but yet mutably, so that he might fall from it (Gen_2:16, Gen_2:17; Gen_3:6). 9:3 Man, by his fall into a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation (Joh_15:5; Rom_5:6; Rom_8:7) : so as, a natural man, being altogether averse from that good (Rom_3:10, Rom_3:12), and dead in sin (Eph_2:1, Eph_2:5; Col_2:13), is not able, by his own strength, to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto (Joh_6:44, Joh_6:65; 1Co_2:14; Eph_2:2-5; Tit_3:3-5). 9:4 When God converts a sinner, and translates him into the state of grace, He freeth him from his natural bondage under sin (Joh_8:34, Joh_8:36; Col_1:13) ; and, by His grace alone, enables him freely to will and to do that which is spiritually good (Rom_6:18, Rom_6:22; Phi_2:13) ; yet so, as that by reason of his remaining corruption, he doth not perfectly, nor only, will that which is good, but doth also will that which is evil Rom_7:19, Rom_7:21, Rom_7:23; Gal_5:17). (Rom_7:15, Rom_7:18,

11 9:5 The will of man is made perfectly and immutably free to do good alone, in the state of glory only (Eph_4:13; Heb_12:23; 1Jo_3:2; Jud_1:24). Chapter 10: Of Effectual Calling 10:1 All those whom God hath predestinated unto life, and those only, He is pleased in His appointed and accepted time effectually to call (Rom_8:30; Rom_11:7; Eph_1:10, Eph_1:11), by His Word and Spirit (2Co_3:3, 2Co_3:6; 2Th_2:13, 2Th_2:14), out of that state of sin and death, in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ (Rom_8:2; Eph_2:1-5; 2Ti_1:9, 2Ti_1:10) ; enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God (Act_26:18; 1Co_2:10, 1Co_2:12; Eph_1:17, Eph_1:18) ; taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them a heart of flesh (Eze_36:26) ; renewing their wills, and by His almighty power determining them to that which is good (Deu_30:6; Eze_11:19; Eze_36:27; Phi_2:13), and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ (Joh_6:44, Joh_6:45; Eph_1:19) : yet so, as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace (Psa_110:3; Son_1:4; Joh_6:37; Rom_6:16-18). 10:2 This effectual call is of God s free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man (Rom_9:11; Eph_2:4, Eph_2:5, Eph_2:8, Eph_2:9; 2Ti_1:9; Tit_3:4, Tit_3:5), who is altogether passive therein, until being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit (Rom_8:7; 1Co_2:14; Eph_2:5), he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it (Eze_36:27; Joh_5:25; Joh_6:37). 10:3 Elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated, and saved by Christ through the Spirit (Luk_18:15, Luk_18:16, and Act_2:38, Act_2:39, and Joh_3:3, Joh_3:5, and 1Jo_5:12, and Rom_8:9 compared), who worketh when, and where, and how He pleaseth (Joh_3:8) : so also, are all other elect persons who are uncapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the Word (Act_4:12; 1Jo_5:12). 10:4 Others, not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the Word (Mat_22:14), and may have some common operations of the Spirit (Mat_7:22; Mat_13:20, Mat_13:21; Heb_6:4, Heb_6:5), yet they never truly come unto Christ, and therefore cannot be saved (Joh_6:64-66; Joh_8:24) : much less can men, not professing the Christian religion, be saved in any other way whatsoever, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that religion they do profess (Joh_4:22; Joh_14:6; Joh_17:3; Act_4:12; Eph_2:12) (1Co_16:22; Gal_1:6-8; ; and to assert and maintain that they may, is very pernicious, and to be detested 2Jo_1:9-11). Chapter 11: Of Justification 11:1 Those whom God effectually calleth, He also freely justifieth (Rom_3:24; Rom_8:30) : not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ s sake alone; nor by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their

12 (Jer_23:6; Rom_3:22, Rom_3:24, righteousness, but by imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto them Rom_3:25, Rom_3:27, Rom_3:28; Rom_4:5-8; Rom_5:17-19; 1Co_1:30, 1Co_1:31; 2Co_5:19, 2Co_5:21; Eph_1:7; Tit_3:5, Tit_3:7), they receiving and resting on Him and His righteousness by faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God (Act_10:44; Act_13:38, Act_13:39; Gal_2:16; Eph_2:7, Eph_2:8; Phi_3:9). 11:2 Faith, thus receiving and resting on Christ and His righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification (Joh_1:12; Rom_3:28; Rom_5:1) ; yet is it not alone in the person justified, but is ever accompanied with all other saving graces, and is no dead faith, but worketh by love (Gal_5:6; Jam_2:17, Jam_2:22, Jam_2:26). 11:3 Christ, by His obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real, and full satisfaction to His Father s justice in their behalf (Isa_53:4-6, Isa_53:10-12; Dan_9:24, Dan_9:26; Rom_5:8-10; 1Ti_2:5, 1Ti_2:6; Heb_10:10, Heb_10:14). Yet, inasmuch as He was given by the Father for them (Rom_8:32) ; and His obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead (Mat_3:17; 2Co_5:21; Eph_5:2) ; and both freely, not for anything in them; their justification is only of free grace (Rom_3:24; Eph_1:7) ; that both the exact justice and rich grace of God, might be glorified in the justification of sinners (Rom_3:26; Eph_2:7). 11:4 God did, from all eternity, decree to justify all the elect (Rom_8:30; Gal_3:8; 1Pe_1:2, 1Pe_1:19, 1Pe_1:20), and Christ did, in the fulness of time, die for their sins, and rise again for their justification (Rom_4:25; Gal_4:4; 1Ti_2:6) : nevertheless, they are not justified, until the Holy Spirit doth, in due time, actually apply Christ unto them (Gal_2:16; Col_1:21, Col_1:22; Tit_3:4-7). 11:5 God doth continue to forgive the sins of those that are justified (Mat_6:12; 1Jo_1:7, 1Jo_1:9; 1Jo_2:1, 1Jo_2:2) : and, although they can never fall from the state of justification (Luk_22:32; Joh_10:28; Heb_10:14) ; yet they may, by their sins, fall under God s fatherly displeasure, and not have the light of His countenance restored unto them, until they humble themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance (Psa_51:7-12; Psa_32:5; Psa_89:31-33; Mat_26:75; Luk_1:20; 1Co_11:30, 1Co_11:32). 11:6 The justification of believers under the old testament was, in all these respects, one and the same with the justification of believers under the new testament (Rom_4:22-24; Gal_3:9, Gal_3:13, Gal_3:14; Heb_13:8). Chapter 12: Of Adoption 12:1 All those that are justified, God vouchsafeth, in and for His only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption (Gal_4:4, Gal_4:5; Eph_1:5) : by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and privileges of the children of God (Joh_1:12; Rom_8:17), have His name put upon them (Jer_14:9; 2Co_6:18; Rev_3:12), receive the spirit of adoption (Rom_8:15), have access to the throne of grace with boldness (Rom_5:2; Eph_3:12), are enabled to cry, Abba, Father (Gal_4:6), are pitied (Psa_103:13), protected (Pro_14:26), provided for (Mat_6:30, Mat_6:32; 1Pe_5:7), and chastened by Him as by a Father (Heb_12:6) ; yet never cast off (Lam_3:31), but sealed

13 to the day of redemption (Eph_4:30), and inherit the promises (Heb_6:12), as heirs of everlasting salvation (Heb_1:14; 1Pe_1:3, 1Pe_1:4). Chapter 13: Of Sanctification 13:1 They, who are effectually called and regenerated, having a new heart and a new spirit created in them, are further sanctified, really and personally, through the virtue of Christ s death and resurrection (Act_20:32; Rom_6:5, Rom_6:6; 1Co_6:11; Phi_3:10), by His Word and Spirit dwelling in them (Joh_17:17; Eph_5:26; 2Th_2:13) : the dominion of the whole body of sin is destroyed (Rom_6:6, Rom_6:14), and the several lusts thereof are more and more weakened and mortified (Rom_8:13; Gal_5:24) ; and they more and more quickened and strengthened in all saving graces (Eph_3:16-19; Col_1:11), to the practice of true holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord (2Co_7:1; Heb_12:14). 13:2 This sanctification is throughout, in the whole man (1Th_5:23) ; yet imperfect in this life, there abiding still some remnants of corruption in every part (Rom_7:18, Rom_7:23; Phi_3:12; 1Jo_1:10) : whence ariseth a continual and irreconcilable war; the flesh lusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh (Gal_5:17; 1Pe_2:11). 13:3 In which war, although the remaining corruption, for a time, may much prevail (Rom_7:23) ; yet through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part doth overcome (Rom_6:14; Eph_4:15, Eph_4:16; 1Jo_5:4) ; and so, the saints grow in grace (2Co_3:18; 2Pe_3:18), perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2Co_7:1). Chapter 14: Of Saving Faith 14:1 The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls (Heb_10:39), is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts (2Co_4:13; Eph_1:17-19; Eph_2:8) ; and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word (Rom_10:14, Rom_10:17) : by which also, and by the administration of the sacraments, and prayer, it is increased and strengthened (Luk_17:5; Act_20:32; Rom_1:16, Rom_1:17; Rom_4:11; 1Pe_2:2). 14:2 By this faith, a Christian believeth to be true whatsoever is revealed in the Word, for the authority of God Himself speaking therein (Joh_4:42; Act_24:14; 1Th_2:13; 1Jo_5:10) ; and acteth differently upon that which each particular passage thereof containeth; yielding obedience to the commands (Rom_16:26), trembling at the threatenings (Isa_66:2), and embracing the promises of God for this life, and that which is to come (1Ti_4:8; Heb_11:13). But the principal acts of saving faith are accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ alone for (Joh_1:12; Act_15:11; Act_16:31; justification, sanctification, and eternal life, by virtue of the covenant of grace Gal_2:20).

14 14:3 This faith is different in degrees, weak or strong (Mat_6:30; Mat_8:10; Rom_4:19, Rom_4:20; Heb_5:13, Heb_5:14) ; may be often and many ways assailed, and weakened, but gets the victory (Luk_22:31, Luk_22:32; Eph_6:16; 1Jo_5:4, 1Jo_5:5) ; growing up in many to the attainment of a full assurance through Christ (Col_2:2; Heb_6:11, Heb_6:12; Heb_10:22), who is both the author and finisher of our faith (Heb_12:2). Chapter 15: Of Repentance 15:1 Repentance unto life is an evangelical grace (Zec_12:10; Act_11:18), the doctrine whereof is to be preached by every minister of the Gospel, as well as that of faith in Christ (Mar_1:15; Luk_24:47; Act_20:21). 15:2 By it, a sinner, out of the sight and sense not only of the danger, but also of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins, as contrary to the holy nature and righteous law of God; and upon the apprehension of His mercy in Christ to such as are penitent, so grieves for, and hates his sins, as to turn from them all unto God (Psa_51:4; Psa_119:128; Isa_30:22; Jer_31:18, Jer_31:19; Eze_18:30, Eze_18:31; Eze_36:31; Joe_2:12, Joe_2:13; Amo_5:15; 2Co_7:11), purposing and endeavouring to walk with Him in all the ways of His commandments (2Ki_23:25; Psa_119:6, Psa_119:59, Psa_119:106; Luk_1:6). 15:3 Although repentance be not to be rested in, as any satisfaction for sin, or any cause of the pardon thereof (Eze_16:61-63; Eze_36:31, Eze_36:32), which is the act of God s free grace in Christ Eph_1:7) ; yet it is of such necessity to all sinners, that none may expect pardon without it Act_17:30, Act_17:31). (Hos_14:2, Hos_14:4; Rom_3:24; (Luk_13:3, Luk_13:5; 15:4 As there is no sin so small, but it deserves damnation (Mat_12:36; Rom_5:12; Rom_6:23), so there is no sin so great, that it can bring damnation upon those who truly repent (Isa_1:16, Isa_1:18; Isa_55:7; Rom_8:1). 15:5 Men ought not to content themselves with a general repentance, but it is every man s duty to endeavour to repent of his particular sins, particularly (Psa_19:13; Luk_19:8; 1Ti_1:13, 1Ti_1:15). 15:6 As every man is bound to make a private confession of his sins to God, praying for the pardon thereof (Psa_32:5, Psa_32:6; Psa_51:4, Psa_51:5, Psa_51:7, Psa_51:9, Psa_51:14) ; upon which, and the forsaking of them, he shall find mercy (Pro_28:13; 1Jo_1:9) : so, he that scandalizeth his brother, or the Church of Christ, ought to be willing, by a private or public confession, and sorrow for his sin, to declare his repentance to those that are offended (Jos_7:19; Psa 51:1-19; Luk_17:3, Luk_17:4; Jam_5:16), who are thereupon to be reconciled to him, and in love to receive him (2Co_2:8). Chapter 16: Of Good Works

15 16:1 Good works are only such as God hath commanded in His holy Word (Mic_6:8; Rom_12:2; Heb_13:21), and not such as, without the warrant thereof, are devised by men, out of blind zeal, or upon any pretence of good intention (1Sa_15:21-23; Isa_29:13; Mat_15:9; Joh_16:2; Rom_10:2; 1Pe_1:18). 16:2 These good works, done in obedience to God s commandments, are the fruits and evidences of a true and lively faith (Jam_2:18, Jam_2:22) : and by them believers manifest their thankfulness (Psa_116:12, Psa_116:13; 1Pe_2:9), strengthen their assurance (2Pe_1:5-10; 1Jo_2:3, 1Jo_2:5), edify their brethren (Mat_5:16; 2Co_9:2), adorn the profession of the Gospel (1Ti_6:1; Tit_2:5, Tit_2:9-12), stop the mouths of the adversaries (1Pe_2:15), and glorify God (Joh_15:8; Phi_1:11; 1Pe_2:12), whose workmanship they are, created in Christ Jesus thereunto (Eph 2;10), that, having their fruit unto holiness, they may have the end, eternal life (Rom_6:22). 16:3 Their ability to do good works is not at all of themselves, but wholly from the Spirit of Christ (Eze_36:26, Eze_36:27; Joh_15:4-6). And that they may be enabled thereunto, besides the graces they have already received, there is required an actual influence of the same Holy Spirit, to work in them to will and to do of His good pleasure (2Co_3:5; Phi_2:13; Phi_4:13) : yet are they not hereupon to grow negligent, as if they were not bound to perform any duty, unless upon a special motion of the Spirit; but they ought to be diligent in stirring up the grace of God that is in them Jud_1:20, Jud_1:21). (Isa_64:7; Act_26:6, Act_26:7; Phi_2:12; 2Ti_1:6; Heb_6:11, Heb_6:12; 2Pe_1:3, 2Pe_1:5, 2Pe_1:10, 2Pe_1:11; 16:4 They, who in their obedience attain to the greatest height which is possible in this life, are so far from being able to supererogate, and to do more than God requires, as that they fall short of much which in duty they are bound to do (Neh_13:22; Job_9:2, Job_9:3; Luk_17:10; Gal_5:17). 16:5 We cannot, by our best works, merit pardon of sin, or eternal life at the hand of God, by reason of the great disproportion that is between them and the glory to come; and the infinite distance that is between us and God, whom, by them, we can neither profit, nor satisfy for the debt of our former sins (Job_22:2, Job_22:3; Job_35:7, Job_35:8; Psa_16:2; Rom_3:20; Rom_4:2, Rom_4:4, Rom_4:6; Rom_8:18; Eph_2:8, Eph_2:9; Tit_3:5-7), but when we have done all we can, we have done but our duty, and are unprofitable servants (Luk_17:10) ; and because, as they are good, they proceed from His Spirit (Gal_5:22, Gal_5:23) ; and as they are wrought by us, they are defiled, and mixed with so much weakness and imperfection, that they cannot endure the severity of God s judgment (Psa_130:3; Psa_143:2; Isa_64:6; Rom_7:15, Rom_7:18; Gal_5:17). 16:6 Yet notwithstanding, the persons of believers being accepted through Christ, their good works also are accepted in Him (Gen_4:4 with Heb_11:4; Exo_28:38; Eph_1:6; 1Pe_2:5), not as though they were in this life wholly unblameable and unreproveable in God s sight (Job_9:20; Psa_143:2) ; but that He, looking upon them in His Son, is pleased to accept and reward that which is sincere, although accompanied with many weaknesses and imperfections (Mat_25:21, Mat_25:23; 2Co_8:12; Heb_6:10; Heb_13:20, Heb_13:21).

16 16:7 Works done by unregenerate men, although, for the matter of them, they may be things which God commands, and of good use both to themselves and others (1Ki_21:27, 1Ki_21:29; 2Ki_10:30, 2Ki_10:31; Phi_1:15, Phi_1:16, Phi_1:18) : yet, because they proceed not from an heart purified by faith (Gen_4:3-5 with Heb_11:4, Heb_11:6) ; nor are done in a right manner according to the Word (Isa_1:12; 1Co_13:3) ; nor to a right end, the glory of God (Mat_6:2, Mat_6:5, Mat_6:16) ; they are therefore sinful, and cannot please God, or make a man meet to receive grace from God (Hos_1:4; Amo_5:21, Amo_5:22; Hag_2:14; Rom_9:16; Tit_1:15; Tit_3:5). And yet, their neglect of them is more sinful, and displeasing unto God (Job_21:14, Job_21:15; Psa_14:4; Psa_36:3; Mat_23:23; Mat_25:41-45). Chapter 17: Of the Perseverance of the Saints 17:1 They, whom God hath accepted in His Beloved, effectually called, and sanctified by His Spirit, can neither totally, nor finally, fall away from the state of grace: but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved (Joh_10:28, Joh_10:29; Phi_1:6; 1Pe_1:5, 1Pe_1:9; 2Pe_1:10; 1Jo_3:9). 17:2 This perseverance of the saints depends not upon their own free will, but upon the immutability of the decree of election flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father (Jer_31:3; 2Ti_2:18, 2Ti_2:19) ; upon the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ (Luk_22:32; Joh_17:11, Joh_17:24; Rom_8:33-39; Heb_7:25; Heb_9:12-15; Heb_10:10, Heb_10:14; Heb_13:20, Heb_13:21) ; the abiding of the Spirit, and of the seed of God within them (Joh_14:16, Joh_14:17; 1Jo_2:27; 1Jo_3:9) ; and the nature of the covenant of grace (Jer_32:40) : from all which ariseth also the certainty and infallibility thereof (Joh_10:28; 2Th_3:3; 1Jo_2:19). 17:3 Nevertheless, they may, through the temptations of Satan and of the world, the prevalency of corruption remaining in them, and the neglect of the means of their preservation, fall into grievous sins (Mat_26:70, Mat_26:72, Mat_26:74) ; and, for a time, continue therein (Psa_51:14 and title) : whereby they incur God s displeasure (2Sa_11:27; Isa_64:5, Isa_64:7, Isa_64:9), and grieve His Holy Spirit (Eph_4:30), come to be deprived of some measure of their graces and comforts (Psa_51:8, Psa_51:10, Psa_51:12; Son_5:2-4, Son_5:6; Rev_2:4), have their hearts hardened (Isa_36:17; Mar_6:52; Mar_16:14), and their consciences wounded (Psa_32:3, Psa_32:4; Psa_51:8), hurt and scandalize others (2Sa_12:14), and bring temporal judgments upon themselves (Psa_89:31, Psa_89:32; 1Co_11:32). Chapter 18: Of Assurance of Grace and Salvation 18:1 Although hypocrites and other unregenerate men may vainly deceive themselves with false hopes, and carnal presumptions of being in the favour of God, and estate of salvation (Deu_29:9; Job_8:13, Job_8:14; Mic_3:11; Joh_8:41) ; which hope of theirs shall perish (Mat_7:22, Mat_7:23) : yet such as truly believe in the Lord Jesus, and love Him in sincerity, endeavouring to walk in all good conscience before Him, may, in this life, be certainly assured that they are in the state of grace (1Jo_2:3; 1Jo_3:14, 1Jo_3:18, 1Jo_3:19, 1Jo_3:21, 1Jo_3:24; 1Jo_5:13), and may rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, which hope shall never make them ashamed (Rom_5:2, Rom_5:5).

17 18:2 This certainly is not a bare conjectural and probable persuasion, grounded upon a fallible hope (Heb_6:11, Heb_6:19) ; but an infallible assurance of faith, founded upon the divine truth of the promises of salvation (Heb_6:17, Heb_6:18), the inward evidence of those graces unto which these promises are made (2Co_1:12; 2Pe_1:4, 2Pe_1:5, 2Pe_1:10, 2Pe_1:11; 1Jo_2:3; 1Jo_3:14), the testimony of the Spirit of adoption witnessing with our spirits that we are the children of God (Rom_8:15, Rom_8:16) : which Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance, whereby we are sealed to the day of redemption (2Co_1:21, 2Co_1:22; Eph_1:13, Eph_1:14; Eph_4:30). 18:3 This infallible assurance doth not so belong to the essence of faith, but that a true believer may wait long, and conflict with many difficulties before he be a partaker of it (Psa_77:1-12; 88:1-18; Isa_1:10; Mar_9:24; 1Jo_5:13) : yet, being enabled by the Spirit to know the things which are freely given him of God, he may without extraordinary revelation, in the right use of ordinary means, attain thereunto (1Co_2:12; Eph_3:17-19; Heb_6:11, Heb_6:12; 1Jo_4:13). And therefore it is the duty of everyone to give all diligence to make his calling and election sure (2Pe_1:10) ; that thereby his heart may be enlarged in peace and joy in the Holy Ghost, in love and thankfulness to God, and in strength and cheerfulness in the duties of obedience, the proper fruits of this assurance (Psa_4:6, Psa_4:7; Psa_119:32; Eph_1:3, Eph_1:4; Rom_5:1, Rom_5:2, Rom_5:5; Rom_14:17; Rom_15:13) : so far is it from inclining men to looseness 1Jo_1:7; 1Jo_2:1, 1Jo_2:2). (Psa_130:4; Joh_3:2, Joh_3:3; Rom_6:1, Rom_6:2; Rom_8:1, Rom_8:12;1Co_7:1; Tit_2:11, Tit_2:12, Tit_2:14; 1Jo_1:6, 18:4 True believers may have the assurance of their salvation divers ways shaken, diminished, and intermitted; as, by negligence in preserving of it, by falling into some special sin, which woundeth the conscience and grieveth the Spirit; by some sudden or vehement temptation, by God s withdrawing the light of His countenance, and suffering even such as fear Him to walk in darkness and to have no light (Psa_31:22; Psa_77:1-10; 88:1-18; Son_5:2, Son_5:3, Son_5:6; Isa_1:10; Mat_26:69-72; Eph_4:30, Eph_4:31) : yet are they never utterly destitute of that seed of God, and life of faith, that love of Christ and the brethren, that sincerity of heart, and conscience of duty, out of which, by the operation of the Spirit, this assurance may, in due time, be revived (Job_13:15; Psa_51:8, Psa_51:12; Psa_73:15; Isa_1:10; Luk_22:32; 1Jo_3:9) ; and by the which, in the mean time, they are supported from utter despair (Psa_22:1; 88:1-18; Isa_54:7-10; Mic_7:7-9).
