41 ST DIOCESAN WOMEN S CONFERENCE JUNE 2011 The Diocesan Women s Committee together with assistance from Ms Patricia Wee, the Eastern Archdeaconry Women s Committee Representative, Rev Stephen Chan, Vicar of St. Andrew s Church Kuala Terengganu, and members of St. Andrew s Church organized the 41 st Diocesan Women s Conference which was held at Permai Inn Kuala Terengganu from Monday 6th to Wednesday 8 th June 2011 The theme for the Conference was Sowing the Seed for an abundant harvest of blessing. Participants comprised 242 ladies, men and children from 35 churches in the Diocese. The day began with registration at 2.00 p.m. The Opening Service, officiated by the Rt. Rev. Datuk Ng Moon Hing and assisted by Deaconesses Ruth Ong, Canon Margaret Chen and others began at 4.30 p.m. Rt. Rev Andrew Phang, Archdeacon of the Eastern Archdeaconry was present at the Service and throughout the Conference. Some residents from Rumah Damai, a Home for the aged and destitute, were present at the Opening Service. At the end of the Service they presented a few song items. The Offertory, supplemented by a top up from the DWC, amounted to RM 2,000. This was donated to the Rumah Damai.
All participants then adjourned to take a group photograph before being ushered to a Welcome Dinner. After dinner the ladies congregated for the Business Meeting. The Bishop in his Presidential Address highlighted the theme of Sowing the Seed. He said that the Bible is our seed and that we must not forego the opportunity to preach and teach the word. He explained that the sowing and the nurturing must go hand in hand. He further challenged the women to make a difference by seriously doing the six things listed below: Embark on a Bible reading programme from cover to cover Put aside RM 1.00 per week to raise funds for the DWC for social concerns, disaster relief and mission Identify and enable one sister to study in the STM every year Adopt an Anglican Care Centre Appoint a Full Time Secretary General for the DWC Go on an Annual Mission Trip The next day the ladies went into their respective language groups for the Theme Talks and Workshop Sessions. They all got back together only for meals. ENGLISH SESSION The Theme Speaker for the English Session was Rev Elisha Satvinder. Theme Talk 1 The Introduction was based on Hosea 10:12 Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love and break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you. Fallow ground needs to be broken before the seed can be sown. The field has then to be fertilized, watered, weeded, cared for and watched over. We then have to wait. The harvest only comes after much hard work and care. Even after the harvest, there is still much work to be done. We as servants of God have to be good sowers. In order to be good sowers, we ought to sow
righteousness unto ourselves. We need to be right ourselves. Only then can we sow seed in others lives. Theme Talk 2 Influencing others. The starting point for this is not what we DO, but what we ARE! To be good influence, we got to stay close to God talk to Him daily, read and study His Word and obey Him in everything. If we give in to worldly pleasures and compromise with the world, we are being bad influence for the Lord. Romans 12:2, says: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. Theme Talk 3 Intentional, Hard Work & Sacrifice - This was based on Galatians 6:7-10: Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. This means that we need to work for the Lord to sow the seeds with good intentions. This requires sacrifice of our time, treasures, etc. He concluded by saying that there are 10 things that we need to bear in mind: 1. Be passionate towards God and his presence. Hebrews 10: Maintain the joy in serving the Lord. Deuteronomy 28:47 3. Set your affection on eternal things and not on temporal. Colossians 3: Do not allow worldly mixture to dampen your conviction and morals. Leviticus 19:19 5. Cultivate transparency in your relationships. Ephesians 4:15 6. Determine to serve others and not others serve you. Mark 10:45 7. Don t allow gossips, criticisms and murmuring to shape your attitude. Discipline your tongue. Proverbs 13:1 8. Cultivate a spirit of giving. Malachi 3: Establish clear biblical priorities to live by. Matthew 6: Be firmly planted in your local church so that you determine to serve the next generation by becoming a seed of influence, leaving a Godly impression upon their lives that will bring an abundant harvest of blessings. Dss. Ruth Ong led in the Bible Study and Ministry of Women session. She shared her experience on: (i) how she received the calling to become a deaconess (ii) how she was involved in the children s ministry (iii)how she manages to raise funds for ministry Besides that, she also gave a brief explanation on sowing seeds in other people s life based on Matthew 13. Afterwards, a group discussion took place where participants shared on their involvement in ministries of the church and the challenges they face.
TAMIL SESSION The Theme Speaker for the Tamil Session was Rev David Devapiriam of Zion Lutheran Church, Brickfields. He spoke at length on how we have to be transformed first before we can go out to sow the seed. He said that we must first show Jesus love to the non believers by living an exemplary life. Dss Rani led the session on Ministry of Women & Bible Study. She shared her personal testimony on how she came into full time ministry. During this session too the ladies had a wonderful time of sharing and exploring the women s ministry in the Diocese. We praise God that 4 young sisters offered themselves for the Lord s Ministry in the Diocese. CHINESE SESSION The Theme Speaker for the Chinese Session was Dss Ngeo Ming Ming of St. Andrew s Church Kuala Terengganu. She spoke on the Diocesan Theme Sowing the Seeds and said that we should first change our lives and only then can we go out to sow the seed in others. Dss Dorrina Ng led the session on Ministry of Women & Bible Study. She challenged the women present to sign up for full time ministry in the Diocese.
On the 2 nd day all participants were taken out to visit some places of interest in Kuala Terengganu such as the Batik Factory, the Crystal Mosque and the Beach. All the ladies enjoyed themselves. The Conference came to end on Wednesday 8th June The ladies went home with fond memories of friendships made at the Conference among the different language groups. We give God all Glory, Honour & Praise!! Mrs. Nesamani Alexandor Organizing Committee Member Diocesan Women s Conference 2011
