PART TWO ALL SAINTS, GLAZEBURY Parish Church - Vicarage - School Our Worship The Wider Context - Statistics - Church Finances Vision for the Future Review of 2011 by the Congregation
Parish Glazebury forms part of the Civic Parish of Culcheth and Glazebury and is situated in the north-east of the Warrington, which is a Unitary Authority formerly within the County of Cheshire. It is a small linear village of approximately 1,500 people and extends either side of the A574 which links the village to Culcheth in the south and Leigh to the north. It lies to the west of the River Glaze (which forms part of the boundary between Warrington and Salford in Greater Manchester), and is situated in flat open countryside, predominantly in mixed agricultural use that is crossed by numerous public footpaths, and which forms part of the wider Warrington green belt. Due to its rural green belt location there is very limited opportunities for new housing developments, consequently the village population is relatively stable. It is an attractive residential area with a wide variety of predominantly private housing. The village is well served by public transport and is on the bus route between Warrington and Leigh The largest local employer is the Bents Garden Centre (located in the north of the village close to the East Lancashire Road A580). It is mainly a commuter village with many residents working in the nearby urban areas of Warrington, Leigh and Salford/Manchester; although a rural village, very few people now work on the land. The village also contains a Methodist Church, a primary school (C of E aided), a small industrial estate, a general store, fast food take-away, tea shop and several public houses. The village has the advantages of being a community within an attractive rural area whilst also being close to the wide and easily accessible range of shopping, recreational and cultural facilities found in the nearby towns and cities, especially Warrington and Manchester. Both Glazebury and Hollinfare are within easy reach of national motorways, the main-line railway network and two international airports at Liverpool and Manchester.
The Church The Church is a Grade 2 Listed Building, situated in the centre of the village. It is immediately adjacent and to the west of Warrington Road (A574), and approximately 100m from the Glazebury Church of England Primary School (which also fronts onto Warrington Road). It is approximately mile from the existing vicarage. The foundation stone was laid in June 1851 and the church was consecrated on April by the Bishop of Chester as a chapel of ease to Newchurch in the nearby village of Culcheth (then in the diocese of Manchester) For the first 15 years, services were conducted by visiting clergy. Baptisms and Burial Registers commenced in 1864, and the first vicar was appointed in Permission to conduct weddings was granted in The church is traditionally oriented with a central aisle and contains seating for up to approximately 150 people on attractive oak pews and in the choir stalls. On the northern side of the aisle there is an organ that is in excellent working order, a vicar s vestry and a Group Room used by the Children s Sunday Group and for general meetings. The Group Room (formerly the choir vestry) contains a small kitchen area, and the adjacent toilet (also suitable for the disabled) has been recently modernised and decorated. There is a sound system with fixed and mobile microphones, which is also adapted for the hard of hearing. There are several attractive stained glass windows behind the altar and on both sides of the church. The church is well loved and cared for and is regularly cleaned and maintained in good order. A new roof was provided in the late 1980 s, and a new oil boiler and oil tank have also recently been provided. The last Quinquennial Inspection was carried out in 2010 and works identified are carried out as funds become available.
A new electricity meter and breakers have been installed and all mandatory inspections completed. There are no large scale or urgent matters that need attention although some repairs/repainting are needed to boundary walls and railings. Some re-wiring is also required. Redecoration of the church interior is also on our would like to do list. The churchyard, which extends all around the church, is active for burials and is well maintained by a parishioner working group and local contractor. There are large mature trees along the southern and western boundaries which are covered by Tree Preservation Orders. The area adjacent to the main entrance to the church is attractively planted. There is a Garden of Remembrance and also a quiet sitting area adjacent to a rose garden at the rear of the churchyard adjacent to open agricultural land. A War Memorial is located in the centre of the graveyard. Immediately adjacent and to the south of the churchyard is a Scout and Community Centre with its own car park, that was completed approximately 5 years ago, and which is available to those attending church services. There is a direct footpath link into the churchyard and the centre is used by the church for special meetings and for social events.
The Vicarage The Vicarage is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac approximately mile from All Saints Church. It is a modern detached family home with gas central heating. There are well maintained gardens to the front and rear, (including a garden shed.) There is no garage but private parking for two/three cars is available at the front of the property Accommodation consists of: o o o o o o o A through living/dining room with a connecting conservatory overlooking the rear garden. A fitted kitchen Large Study 4 bedrooms An upstairs bathroom, including bath/shower hand basin and toilet A downstairs toilet with hand basin. A small utility/boiler room.
The School Glazebury Church of England School is a short walk from the church along the Warrington Road. The school is based upon the original building opened in 1882 but which has subsequently been carefully extended and modernised and now provides an excellent learning environment with its own sports field. The relationships between the church and school are excellent with the previous incumbent regularly visiting the school for weekly assemblies. The Head, staff, children and parents continue to support all major church services by singing, reading prayers and acting out small plays. The Community Carol Day and Mothers Day services are particularly well attended. For the first time in 2011, the Education Day Communion Service was celebrated in school rather than in church. The school has also recently provided a choir for two weddings. Academically the school has an excellent reputation and it is regularly over-subscribed with a catchment extending beyond the village northwards into Leigh which is in the Neighbouring local authority area of Wigan. The school embraces all denominations and currently has 113 pupils (September At the end of the summer term there were 12 School Governors, including the Curate-in-Charge. The school has had two outstanding OFSTED reports, has already been awarded a School-Church Partnership Award and is currently working towards a second. It is the only primary school in Warrington with Training School Status (which enables excellent pupil:staff ratios), has achieved the prestigious Primary Quality Mark for work in literacy and numeracy, and is in the top 5% of schools nationally for improvement. It is expected that the new priests will have had experience of church schools and will continue to develop the existing strong links between church and school as part of the children s ministry initiative.
What the children think about the school..(taken from the school prospectus) Our school is a place where. you can feel at home and learn in a fun way people are kind and caring and there is always someone to talk to you make friends and are never left out
Our Worship The Parish is of a generally traditional persuasion within a mainly Eucharistic form of worship. Vestments are currently worn but this is not considered to be a mandatory requirement. The PCC supports the Ordination of Women to the Priesthood and considers that the parish has greatly benefited from the ministry of the recently retired Curate-in-Charge Regular Services are as follows: o Sunday am Family Communion (Said) Common Worship o Wednesday 9.30 am Book of Common Prayer Communion Service. Common worship booklets for the main church seasons/festivals are in use and traditional forms of communion Service have been developed for Lent, Holy Week, Christmas Week, Mothering Sunday, Harvest Festival, Remembrance Sunday, All Souls, etc. The first Sunday in the month is a shorter Family Communion service. Those recently baptised, and their families, are sent invitations to attend this service near to the anniversary of their baptism. Many of these services have been themed including, Ephinany, the Queen s 60 th Jubilee, the Anniversary of St James Bible, World Environment Day, New Beginnings (coinciding with the beginning of the school year), the crowning of the Glazebury Gala Queen and the Olympic Games. Bible readings and prayers of intercession during communion services are undertaken by members of the congregation. Weekly sheets are also prepared, containing the Collect, Bible Readings, Post communion prayer, together with information on those who need to be remembered in prayer (i.e. the sick, anniversary of death, and those recently departed.) There is also a short list of main church/social/community information. The previous Curate-in-charge also led weekly assemblies in the village primary school, based upon the Value for Life outlines set by the Gloucester Diocese. The school plays a significant role in our worship and is involved in a variety of services i.e. Mothers Day, Harvest Festival, Community Carol Service, a Christingle Service, and a Christmas Toy Service (with toys donated to local children s organisations). For the first time, in 2011, the service for Education Sunday was held in School rather than in Church. The School has attended church en masse on Ascension Day and on Remembrance Day, when November 11 th falls in the week.
In addition, special (and very well attended) afternoon and evening services were held last year i.e. a Taize, All Souls and Advent evening service. Also for the first time an afternoon Songs of Praise, celebrating World Environment Day was held at a local farm and which was supported by the Bishop of Warrington. All Saints is currently celebrating its 160 th anniversary and a most successful Cross Festival was held in March 2012 to coincide with Passion Sunday. At Easter the school joined in an outdoor Easter Experience within the church grounds, supported by the congregation. The Church has an excellent well maintained organ, and two organists work in rota to cover all Sunday services. A small choir sings at Sunday Communion and at special services. Hymns are taken from Hymns Old and New New Anglican Edition. Children from the primary school sing at special services and also can provide a choir for weddings. Visits to the sick and housebound are undertaken by the clergy with the support of lay people, some of whom are licensed to take out communion. Children are welcome and can either remain in Church with their parents or, under supervision, can join with the Sunday Group, in the Group Room. Contributions to charities and overseas missions are reviewed annually. Donations have recently been made to Christian Aid (jointly with the local Methodist Church, to St Rocco s Hospice in Warrington and to a children s leukaemia charity. There is an active Methodist Church in the village which has excellent facilities and offers rooms for hire. The two churches have enjoyed close links and pulpit swaps and joint services have been held occasionally. The two Glazebury churches have a joint church magazine with shared editorship and which is widely circulated
The Wider Context All Saints Glazebury and St Helen Hollinfare are a United Benefice, both churches are however fully autonomous and have their own PCC. The deanery has been undergoing pastoral re-organisation and following the recent departure of the Curate-in-Charge both parishes are now to be serviced by a House-for Duty priest. The change from a full-time member of clergy to a House-for-Duty priest serving both Parishes, will present a significant change and challenge for both Parishes. The scope of the new ministry and the priorities to be established will therefore have to be established in close co-operation with each PCC, especially as there will inevitably be less clergy time available than has previously been the case. Maintaining the excellent links with the village school is seen as a key priority for the new incumbent. Statistics There are 82 people on the Church Electoral roll as at The average weekly Sunday attendance is 45 (excluding larger specific services, when the attendance can regularly exceed 100.) Attendance at the Wednesday morning service is approximately 9-10 Attendance at special services is much higher, as follows: Mothering Sunday Easter Harvest Remembrance Christmas All Saints conducts baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals and welcomes and supports those attending at such significant occasions when they wish to connect or reconnect with the Church Baptism Confirmations Weddings Funeral church crematorium 11 - Those who have been baptised and their families are invited back to church on their baptism anniversary
Church Finances 2011 was another busy and financially successful year for the finances of All Saints and we start the year with a good bank balance (AGM Treasurer s Report April 2012). Although not a wealthy parish, All Saints continues to pay its Parish Share Contributions of approximately 16,500 pa in full. There are 42 church members who give regularly via weekly envelopes or direct debit, the majority of which are gift aided. A variety of fund-raising events are organised, some involving the school and other community organisations e.g. the Annual Glazebury Gala, musical evenings, tea dances, coffee mornings, etc. A set of accounts for 2011 is available on request.
Our Vision for the Future All Saints supports the Bishop of Liverpool s Growth Agenda which requires us all to ask: How can we grow numerically? How can we kindle our love for God and neighbour? How are we serving our local community? In addition to responding to these wider objectives, the continuing interregnum given All Saints additional responsibilities to ensure that we can: Continue to serve the Parish pastorally and in prayer Continue to offer a variety of worship relevant to the community Prepare for the future by embracing the changes we have to address Build upon the spiritual educational and community work undertaken by the successful ministry of the previous curate-in-charge. Review by the Congregation Links between the church and the school have been excellent in In church the children from school regularly give presentations in the context of the worship, led the prayers and form a choir. At the harvest experience in October 2010, bulbs were planted by the children that looked stunning at Easter time in both the school entrance garden and the churchyard. On Education Sunday the service was held in school, led almost entirely be the children and supported by children, parents and grandparents as well as the usual congregation. Mothering Sunday we saw a record number of children here in church. The Harvest school competition was to make Harvest baskets. The display was very colourful and added to the church arrangements. A group of adults made Corn Dollies for Harvest.
For Remembrance Sunday children from school prepared the altar for worship and arranged the altar flowers. On Remembrance Day the whole school and many from the local community gathered at the War Memorial. Everyone working together. Lots of work going on behind the scenes. Baptism anniversaries help us to keep in touch with families. Our weekly service sheets always welcome by name anyone to be baptized or married as well as offering sympathy to anyone who is recently bereaved. This makes for a very personal service. Delightful church calendars were produced in 2011 they raised funds for church and were great Christmas presents. The pictures are wonderful. Record number of weddings in this church during they year a team of ladies from church help to provide and arrange the flowers and earn extra funds for the church by giving of their time. The churchyard is well maintained and daily visited people in the community helping to keep it in good order. A record number of children and adults from this parish were confirmed at Newchurch in December. Lenten Coffee mornings bring people together in the community. Active Social Group that provides get togethers for all ages e.g. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Evening, Tea Dances all very successful. The Scout Group becoming more active in church life, leading prayers and taking part in worship-more parade services and leaders offering help at the Outdoor Easter Experience. Greater co-operation between church and Scout Group about the use of the car park and the Community Scout Centre.
One of the highlights of the year was the Songs of Praise when Bishop Richard and the community of Glazebury came together to sing hymns on rural themes and to see the wonderful barn at Hawkhurst farm. The retiring collection was given to Christian Aid and the School Sensory Garden Project.
PART THREE ST HELEN, HOLLINFARE Mission Statement The Person We Need About our Parish Our Church Our Day School The Congregation The Wider Context
Mission statement We aim to maintain a Christian witness in this community. We seek to make the Gospel relevant to today s world while acknowledging our own need of God as Lord and Saviour. We gather in this place to worship God, to give thanks for his love. We offer ourselves and others time to stop and think in a busy world and to share our concerns for the local community and the world. Muriel Berry, farmer s wife and writer Our church is at the very centre of our lovely village both spiritually and secularly Sue Lowndes, school teacher We have never felt so welcome at any church we have ever attended. Irene Domville, retired midwifery sister...my husband s family is linked to those who established St Helen s in the 15 th century;; my own family s links here also go back hundreds of years. Our own family continue to worship here that s special. The person we need Clearly the criteria for the post of a house for duty priest is markedly different from that of a full time incumbent. He or she will need considerable support from our congregation given that the commitment is for Sunday services and two days in the parish. We would expect the successful applicant would be recently retired from parish ministry but who would be unhappy simply with retirement a person eager to continue to serve the Lord in a practical way for many years to come but without having to cope with the many day to day cares inevitably experienced in any parish. We have a tradition of middle of the road worship. We prefer our priest to wear vestments but we do not have bells and incense and we enjoy a sermon that will leave us both inspired and thoughtful. However, we are content to leave spiritual matters to the expert! We were pleased that our PCC voted in favour of welcoming a female parish priest as soon as the Ordination of Women measure was approved in 1993 and a now-retired female curate took charge of our parish for the past nine years. In a nutshell, we would hope that the successful applicant would lead our worship, take an interest in our long and distinguished history, in the work of the Sunday School and our day school and in village life in general. Linda Barton, nurse Our church is more than 500 years old. One feels a sense of this as soon as one enters. This is a deeply holy place and one to be cherished. Marion Ainscough, librarian...how wonderful to start the week with Holy Communion at St Helen s. Unmissable! Elizabeth Rainford, dance instructor St Helen s is so welcoming to families. A lovely church. About our parish
Bordered by the dioceses of Manchester and Chester, Hollinfare is as far away from the cathedral as any other parish in the diocese of Liverpool. While some might say that is an advantage (!) we are proud to be part of our diocese and have always endeavoured to maintain strong links with the cathedral. The population of the parish is 1,800 and has remained static for 30 years. Farms occupy most of the land area and among residents there is a complete mixture of the upper, middle and working classes and, accordingly, a selection of higher and lower market homes. Most of those who work have to travel outside the parish. Our church stands at the epicentre of Hollins Green village which reflects the archetypal rural English community. Across one parallel road stands one of our two old-world public houses which has undergone much refurbishment and which is also home to our village pond replete with ducks. Opposite to the east stands the village community hall, a hub of activity which includes dancing classes, morning pre-school, indoor bowls and much more. In the road where you will find our main entrance stands the village s war memorial where we gather every second Sunday in November for the Remembrance service and close by are the smithy and the cemetery. The latter is lovingly cared for by a group of volunteers led by members of our congregation. The churchyard was closed in the 1890s but is also a most attractive and well cared-for feature. Hollins Green has a village shop and a post office and is served by a frequent bus service between Warrington and Manchester. At one time there were claypits and these have been transformed into an area of natural beauty. The two roads from Hollins Green to Glazebrook are festooned with seasonal flowers especially in springtime. Glazebrook is much smaller than Hollins Green but has a rail station on one of the lines linking Liverpool and Manchester. It also has a post office and a prestigious hotel. The River Glaze, the eastern boundary of the parish, flows into the greatly beautified Manchester Ship Canal, its southern boundary. Both our western and northern boundaries are motorways, the M6 and M62. Both Rixton and Glazebrook have Methodist churches with whom we enjoy cordial relations but which we hope in the future will be further strengthened. Our close proximity to Irlam, Cadishead, Lymm and Culcheth means that a number of families and individuals who live in those areas are happy to worship here with us. James Hall, retired official of Royal Ordnance Our day school is so important to us the children are our future. Strong, ongoing links are vital. Sheila Breese, former local government employee To worship in this church is not a duty it is a privilege. It is a lovely place to be. Irene Collins, businesswoman I was raised as a Roman Catholic but I feel greatly at at ease with the worship at St Helen s
Our church Because of our small population and at a time of clergy shortage we had to form a united benefice with Glazebury All Saints in 1994 and from 2004 to 2009 formed part of the first triple benefice in the diocese under the wing of Winwick St Oswald. We now feel that with the appointment of a house for duty priest we can make a completely new start back on an independent footing and we believe we have the people here already to do just that. Seven interregna during the past 40 years, accounting for a total of 14 of those years, have meant that those in authority within our church have had to develop skills of leadership often as far as worship as concerned, show initiative, become adept at raising money, maintain pastoral care and have a working knowledge of the requirements of a church many centuries old. We believe that with the support of a house for duty priest we have people with the ability to take the parish forward. Attached to our church is Church House, once the home of the incumbent and which is now used for many of our parish activities and also by the community for such matters as council surgeries and village meetings. Our Sunday morning service is supplemented by a well-attended worship and lunch on Thursdays. We also hold well attended coffee mornings in Church House once a month and frequent social events all organised by a vibrant and enthusiastic committee. We have had an active Sunday school since at least 1820, a fine musical tradition led by our organist and choir, and a dedicated Friends organisation who have established a magnificent history room for the whole parish within Church House. The Friends hold regular talks and exhibitions of the archives. We are putting in place a mechanism to work towards Child Friendly status and believe we fulfill many of the criteria needed. While providing the various rites of passage for our own parishioners our beautiful surroundings have encouraged brides to choose us for their wedding and the proximity of the cemetery means that we also provide services for the departed from neighbouring areas. We like to think we are most supportive of those who come to us at such special times in their lives. Colin Mawdsley, farmer St Helen s is a very caring church one feels that everyone wants to help. Leslie Edwards, airline employee The church is its people and since coming to worship at St Helen s some years ago I have found its parishioners to be so welcoming to newcomers. Starting at 9.30am has been a problem and having our own priest would solve that. Ken Baglee, retired school head teacher My wife and I have found our spiritual home at St Helen s. Its history is simply awesome.
Our day school Our day school repeatedly does well in Ofsted inspections and the diocese inspection carried out this year provided it with a rating of outstanding. In the SATS tests in 2010 our school was the only one in Warrington to achieve 100 per cent level four ratings and despite small cohorts during the past two years the results have remained excellent. The pupils attend church on many occasions during the year and we have recently appointed a link governor to work towards the Church School Partnership Award. Major extensions were made to the frontage and administration area of our school in The heating system was replaced and a security fence installed in successive years and we have just completed the complete refurbishment of the infant department. The strong links between church and school are complemented by links with the many organisations within our parish. The annual parish council Civic Service and the village s Remembrance Day observance are always held here. We strongly support the work of the Church of England Children s Society (we were one of the first churches in the land to celebrate an annual Christingle Service) and also the charities for the homeless in Manchester and Warrington. We have to admit to weaknesses but believe they will provide opportunities for our future. With the formation of the united benefice in 1994 we surrendered our vicarage, its sale providing the finance for a joint vicarage in our twin parish of Glazebury where there had not been one for some years. We also had to agree to start our Sunday morning worship and Sunday School at 9.30am. Together with the static population, we are certain both factors have mitigated against growth. Our last vicar and curate did not find it possible to provide the all-important regular presence in our parish and one can see from our records the considerable fall in attendances in recent years from 60 to 30 on Sundays. We would hope our house for duty priest with a home in our parish would correct both of these considerable handicaps. To achieve this we intend to urge that our present shared vicarage be sold and the proceeds used to buy a small house for each parish which could be easily managed by a retired person or couple. Because worship has been taking place on our site since the 15 th century and most of our present building was completed in the 18 th we have to cope with all the problems from which ancient churches suffer. However our congregation contains many skills and talents and we have maintained the building so well that our most recent Quinquennial Report in 2009 provided no surprises. The central feature of the church, our 250-year-old cupola, was refurbished in The church roof was reslated as part of a major refurbishment in the 1980s, decoration is in good order and most recently we have laid a fine new path to the west door. Annual inspections are all up to date. Christine Smith, head teacher Church and school links are truly strong the children love to go into church for many activities. Margery Green, farmer s wife St Helen s is a church rarely without flowers they epitomise the living nature of our village church: fresh and beautiful. But there is always something to do! Financially, we encountered problems some six years ago while we were also raising more than 40,000 ( 26,000 more than the original estimate) for our cupola refurbishment but we
managed to do that and also pay our way and have continued to do so. We also maintain a building fund ready for most contingencies. We have shared the costs of the present vicarage with Glazebury and paid our curate her full expenses. We have always encouraged our clergy to take time off when necessary or desired and supported their ongoing training. The parish has no paid-for staff. Pictures contained with this profile hopefully reflect the truly unique character of Hollinfare St Helen with its colourful stained glass windows, beautiful carved reredos, magnificent pipe organ and superb chandeliers and also the commitment of the congregation. On an historical note, the most famous pop singer of the moment, Gary Barlow of Take That fame, performed as a youngster one Christmas morning in our church and later performed a concert in our day school. Among those who have preached at Hollinfare in recent years are two Archbishops of York, the Rt Rev Stuart Blanch and the Rt Rev David Hope, Lord David Sheppard, our diocesan bishop the Rt Rev James Jones, the Rt Rev Richard Blackburn, the suffragan bishop of Warrington and his predecessor the Rt Rev David Jennings along with the Rt Rev Justin Welby, Bishop of Durham. Bishop Richard described our church as a gem. Church House was at one time occupied by the Byrom family whose most famous son, John, wrote the Christmas carol Christians Awake. The son of one of our former vicars was Tim Bobbin, the celebrated Lancashire dialect writer. There are a host of local history books and we have recently published a new history to our church. Our website contains much information on our past as well as providing a pen picture of every aspect of our church and an extensive listing of everyone who does anything both for church or in our school. On the northern border of the parish stands Holcroft Hall. One of British history s most infamous characters, Colonel Thomas Blood, the man who attempted to steal the Crown Jewels, married the daughter of the house and lived there. Doreen Thomason, carer I am unable to attend on Sundays and the Thursday service means so much to me. William Ridge, schoolboy I play rugby on Sunday mornings but only after coming to Sunday School which is such fun
The congregation Raymond Shaw and his wife Beryl have three children. Ray has been a warden for 37 years. Before retirement he worked as an industrial draughtsman with one of Britain s largest companies in Trafford Park and spent considerable time in China contributing to that country s dynamic industrial growth. A keen cricketer, he has played for Lancashire county colts, in the prestigious Lancashire League and appeared at Lord s in the national village competition final. Beryl is our electoral roll officer. Alan Domville and his wife Irene have four children. Alan has been a warden for 26 years and has run the Sunday School for more than 40. He has been a journalist for more than 50 years and for most of those as a newspaper editor and winning a British Press Award in Irene is a retired midwifery sister and our deputy organist. Veronia Prowting has been our church secretary for many years and leads our active social committee. A retired school teacher, she assists with maths lessons in our day school. Janet Barcroft is our head of music and church organist. She is a retired school teacher and continues to provide music lessons. Jim Hall is married with two children and was for many years a manager with Royal Ordnance Factories. He is a member of the standing committee. Christine Smith is married and has been head of our day school since She has achieved excellent results and has worked hard to foster the strong relations with our church. Choir member Doreen Herridge was awarded the British Empire Medal this year for her services to our community. Links with all community organisations have traditionally been deep in Hollinfare with church people taking a full part in local activities and vice versa. In addition to our monthly parish magazine there is a quarterly newsletter distributed throughout the village. A highlight of village life is the annual safari when community centres including our church and many private gardens are open for everyone to enjoy. Noelle Atkinson, retired airport employee The singing in St Helen s is truly something to behold. It is truly uplifting each Sunday morning. Joan Hill, former shopkeeper The history of St Helen s is truly special but the people who worship here are far from old fashioned. If they see there s a job to be done they simply get on with it. The wider context The deanery synod, with the guidance of the supportive Archdeacon and Area Dean, has spent the past two years looking at the distribution of available clergy in its area and we accept that we can no longer enjoy the luxury of a full time or part time parish priest for the reasons already stated. But we would hope to stay open for business, as it were, and to still to play a meaningful role in the aims of our deanery and diocese in the years ahead. All of us at Hollinfare St Helen are greatly looking forward to a new and stimulating period of growth and achievement with the help of yourself and Our Lord. For more information on our parish we have a lively website as does our day school
