4 4 Session 3: MISSION-MINDED MARRIAGE Marriage is to be a reflection of Christ s love for the Church. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the Church. 5 5 Self-empowered Mom vs. Spirit-empowered Mom Wanting my way... Wanting God s way. (Luke 22:42) Not my way, but Thy will be done... Striving in the flesh... Being obedient to God (Col. 1:27-29) Striving according to His working... Worth based by my own works... Worth based on God alone! (Ps. 46:10) Be still and know that I am God... Frustrated by my weaknesses... Relying on God s GRACE (II Cor. 12:9) When I am weak, then I am strong... Being BUSY-BUSY... Abiding in Christ (John 15:4-16) Apart from Me you can do nothing... 7 7 Session 5: RAISED AS A MISSION-MINDED CHILD From the perspective of a Missionary Son: Trae Childs (missionary who grew up in a remote village in Niger, West Africa) On staff in the missions department at Oral Roberts University From the perspective of a USA-based Missionary Daughter: Christi Childs (daughter of the Dunagans) Has ministered and traveled to 23 countries across the globe

8 8 Session 6: MISSION-MINDED PARENTING Mentoring/Parenting Verses: Follow me as I follow Christ. I Corinthians 11:1 commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. II Timothy 2:2 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; That our daughters may be as pillars, Sculptured in palace style. Psalm 144:12 Training our Boys to be Men: II Timothy 2:1-10 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:52 Let no man despise your youth, but be an example to the believers I Timothy 4:12 Raising our Girls to be Daring Daughters: Call for the wailing women. Teach your daughters wailing... 9 9 TRAINING OUR BOYS TO BE MEN: Empowered by God s grace, our boys can hit God s target for their lives; but we need to aim these arrows toward God s bulls-eye, not merely away from the ground, or the sky, or some random tree. In parenting, it s much more fruitful to focus on the YES-side of advancing God s kingdom, rather than on the NO-side of man s legalism. Boys long for adventure, and they long to be men. Just look at this awesome newspaper ad from over a hundred years ago. The famous explorer Ernest Shackelton didn t mince any words, and he didn t make it sound easy as he was recruiting men to accompany him on a dangerous South Pole expedition... and thousands volunteered. II Timothy 2:1-7, and 19-22, contain important PARENTING KEYS for training our boys to be men: vs. 1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Let s train our boys... to be STRONG in God s GRACE. vs. 2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Let s train our boys... to LEARN and to LEAD. vs. 3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Let s train our boys... to ENDURE HARDSHIP. vs. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. Let s train our boys to be... UNENCUMBERED and SOBER-minded. vs. 5 if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. Let s train our boys... to GIVE it ALL they ve GOT! vs. 6-7 The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops. Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things. Let s train our boys... to WORK HARD, with diligence, financial integrity, and generosity. vs The Lord knows those who are His, and, Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Let s train our boys... to be SET-APART for God. We need to raise our boys to more than ordinary and common guys, but boys who are God s chosen vessels set-apart to push back darkness, and to advance God s kingdom. Today s world needs righteous men to advance God s kingdom, not just sons who aren t too bad or merely good little boys. Let s train our boys to be men.

10 10 10 Simple Steps for a Home-Based Mission Vision 1. Establish a Mission-Vision This is who we are! Deut. 6 Write them on the doorposts of your house. Maps, Globes, Newsletters on the fridge Coffee table Bibles, Atlas, Missionary books 2. Passports Just for fun, Just in Case! Make Mission-Minded Passports with your kids Real passports, just to be ready 3. Learn about the World Books, Biographies (if you re in a season of simmering, add spice!) Enjoy international culture: food, music, fashion, design, and people 4. Pray for the World and for the Lost Resources: Operation World, Window on the World, world news, mission newsletters Learn the names of every nation on earth: lizardpoint.com 5. Give Generously to Missions Money, Possessions, and Eternity, by Randy Alcorn Daring to Live on the Edge, by Loren Cunningham Go window shopping on mission sites, vs. in the mall. 6. Use Your Home for Mission-Minded Hospitality Welcome missionaries, ministers, international guests, and neighbors 7. Honor Missionary Heroes Esteem missionaries (real life and in books) 8. Encourage World Missions in your Local Church Help and inspire others who are in a going season Help with projects, like Operation Christmas Child Organize a mission-lending library 9. Reach out in your Local Community Official projects and outreaches: nursing homes, door-to-door, kindness On the lookout: in stores, at the gas station, when you see people you know 10. Go Seek the Lord about how your family could participate in a short term mission. Expand your box of what this looks like (maybe dad and/or mom, maybe one parent and an older child, maybe the whole family together, maybe one older teenager).

11 11 Session 7: MONEY AND THE MISSION-MINDED FAMILY 7 KEYS FROM THE LORD S PRAYER KEY #4 THE KEY of STEWARDSHIP Give us this day our daily bread... Forgiveness and the Cross of Jesus Christ Repentance and Responding to the Holy Spirit s Conviction Preaching about the Cross and God s Forgiveness Forgiveness and Love as a Mission-Minded Family Forgiveness and Love in Marriage Forgiveness and Love among Siblings (and between Parents and Children) Forgiving Others (hurt feelings from relatives, friends, church people, and fellow missionaries)

15 15 Session 11: THE GODLY TUG-OF-WAR: BALANCING OUR PASSIONS Not only are our obligations to family and missions compatible, they are mutually supportive in His purposes. God give us His GRACE and His power, to live for His glory. Grace to avoid sin and to obey God: If God moves your heart with His compassion, He ll give you His grace to take action.
