1 1 To the Ends of the Earth with Jesus Christ Toddler & Twos Lessons A two-year-oldʼs most basic need is for a safe, loving environment that enhances positive feelings. Two-year-olds respond to a schedule that is consistent from day to day. It should include a wide range of active and quiet activities. Most two-year-olds are not mature enough to work in large groups. You will have a better session when you work with children one on one or in small groups. Twos can be doing a variety of activities individually at the same time. Story Time Twos will listen to stories individually or in groups of two or three. They need to see and touch the Bible or book and to be close to you. Guided play Use large blocks of time with many choices for twos. Each childʼs interest will dictate what that child will be involved in next. Snack Time Small groups of children will enjoy being together for snack time and for outdoor play. Music Time Twos may sing together for short periods of time or may listen to recorded music. (Singing along with Island Odyssey music is a great idea!) They enjoy rhythm instruments and creative music, especially when you repeat the same activities each day. Use scarves and strips of lightweight drapery fabric for creative movement. Welcome Gather: masking tape and marker for nametags Greet children with a smile, kneel at the childʼs eye level, and say: I am happy that you came today! Tell the child your name, show your nametag, and invite the child to wear a nametag. (Use a piece of tape with childʼs name and stick it to the font or to the back of the childʼs clothing.) Bible Story Gather: Bible story sketches. Prepare: Familiarize yourself with the stories and practice telling them in a natural manner. When or if the children are in centers with other leaders or helpers, gather two or three children at a time and tell them the Bible story. Open a Bible and say: This is the Bible. It is a special book. There is a story in this book about... Tell todayʼs story. Show the children the Bible story poster for todayʼs story. Memory Verses Gather: Bible story coloring pages, Bible Prepare: Familiarize yourself with the stories and practice telling them in a natural manner. Open the Bible to the memory verse and show the children where the verse is. Ask the children to listen to you read the verse. Active Play Twos need big-muscle play outdoors. They need the freedom to play on their own, but should be supervised so that toys and equipment are used correctly and other children are not hurt. Help the children share the toys and take turns. Thank the children by name for sharing with others. Permission to copy this page for use with Island Odyssey is granted for local church use Abingdon Press. All rights reserved. 2 2 1 Hearing the Right Voice Acts 13:4-12 Memory Verse I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. (Proverbs 4:11, NIV) Trip Tip Jesus is the Star. I will hear his voice and believe. Jesus is the Star (Sing to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat ) Jesus is the star, Shining bright for me. I will try to hear his voice And I will believe. Bible Story Write the word BELIEVE on a star apple card (Use template on page 8) and place it in your Bible. Open the Bible to Acts 13 as the Bible story is told. (Show the children the star apple in your Bible.) Our Bible story today is from the book of Acts. This star apple reminds me of that special fruit that can be found on the island of Jamaica. The star apple is kind of tricky. It is dark on the outside and on the inside is a light color with the shape of a star. Today we are going to hear how Jesus is the star and that it is important to listen to him. Paul and Barnabas were two men who believed in Jesus. They took a boat to Cyprus. Say, Cyprus! (Children repeat after you) They went all over the island to tell people about Godʼs love. Say, God loves you! (Children repeat after you). An important man on the island wanted Paul and Barnabas to tell him about God; but a magician got in the way. The magician talked to the man so he could not hear about Jesusʼ love. The magician became blind and was taken away. The important man now could hear what Paul and Barnabas said. They helped him to see that Jesus is the star, and he believed them. (Say one phrase at a time of the Trip Tip and ask the children to repeat each phrase.) Jesus is the star. I will hear his voice And believe. Music Activity Time 1. Rhythm Activity Heʼs God the Whole World Have the children hold hands walking in a circle singing the chorus. They should stand still, facing each other in the circle when singing the verses. Have them do the following movement with each verse: Heʼs got the little bitty baby... (Snap fingers 3 times and clap 3 times) Heʼs got you and me... (Point at someone in the circle and point at themselves) Heʼs got everybody here... (Make a big circle with both your arms, then spread arms apart with palms of hands face up). 2. Movement Activity Have the children sing All Over the World while watching the music video and following the movements. Heritage Activity Read the following story: Julie lived in a boat all by herself. She ate oranges and pineapples. But she was still hungry. Julieʼs daddy had told her all about Jesus. He had taught Julie and her friends a song about Jesus. Jesus is the star, Shining bright for me. I will try to hear his voice And I will believe!! Julie and her friends would sing the song and dance in a circle. Julie was hungry. Suddenly, QwaQwa stood in her way. He liked to brag and trick people. He had some oranges. They looked so sweet but Julie said, No, thank you! QwaQwa said, I got these oranges from another little girl who has an orange tree. When she sings to it, the tree grows and grows and grows until it touches the sky. (Invite the children to reach for the sky.) She gave them to me because I am the star. Donʼt you want to taste an orange that has touched the sky? Julie reached for an orange. Suddenly her friends appeared. They made a circle and began to sing over and over, Jesus is the star, Shining bright for me. I will try to hear his voice And I will believe!! Finally, QwaQwa left. The children walked Julie to the store. Julie was on her way to church. She was hungry. How did that old trickster, QwaQwa, know that? He stood in her way holding a fruit with a thick purple skin. QwaQwa said, Do you see this purple ball? It does not look like you can eat it. I will open it for you. He opened it. It became a beautiful star. It looked good to eat. Julie reached for the fruit. QwaQwa laughed. He said, I can change a purple ball into something good to eat! It proves that I am the star. Then Julie remembered. She heard her daddyʼs voice telling her, Do not take things from strangers. She heard her daddyʼs voice telling her, Only Jesus is the star! She pulled her hand away from QwaQwa. Then her friends appeared. They took Julie by the hand. All the way to the church they sang, Jesus is the star, Shining bright for me. I will try to hear his voice And I will believe!! The Girl Who Lived in a Boat by Marilyn E. Thornton (with elements from Acts 13:4-12 and two Haitian folktales, Timpingee and The Magic Orange Tree ) Craft Time Options 1. Jesus Star Mobile Let the children color a child ornament while listening to Iʼm a Child of God. Before the children arrive print and cut out the Jesus star and child ornaments from the templates provided on pages 8 and 9 of this resource. Gather all the craft items needed to color the ornament and hang it. Have crayon or colored markers for the children to use. While they are coloring, remind them of the Bible story and Trip Tip. Say, We are making a mobile to show that Jesus is the star and we believe him. Put the mobile together. Assorted colors of card stock paper Crayons or colored markers Yarn, string, or thin ribbon 2. Star Apple Table Cloth Help the children create a Star Apple Table Cloth following the directions on pages 6-8 of the Island Odyssey Arts and Crafts Leader book.

3 3 2 Going the Right Way Acts 27:9-22, 26 Memory Verse [God] made the storm be still... and brought them to their desired haven. (Psalm 107:29-30) Trip Tip Jesus is in charge. I will make a decision to follow him. A Follower of Jesus (Sing to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb) If you choose to let the children march around the room, make sure the room is free of clutter. Before the Bible story have the children sing this song while walking in a circle around the room. When singing the last verse, have the children sing while the child whose name is inserted, walks around the circle. We can be a follower, follower, follower, We can be a follower, of Jesus Christ. I can be a follower, follower, follower, I can be a follower, of Jesus Christ. (Insert name of child) can be a follower, follower, follower, (Insert name of child) can be a follower, of Jesus Christ. Repeat by the number of children in class Bible Story Have the children sit on the floor beside each other in rows of twos or threes, pretending they are in a boat together. Have a fan nearby to use while telling the story. Then tell the Bible story as follows: Paul went on another trip, riding on a ship with several other people. (Have the children sway as if the boat is on the water.) The last time he went to Cyprus. Say Cypus. (The children repeat after you). This time he is a prisoner and is going a long way. The trip is hard and theyʼre running late. They get to the island of Crete. Say Crete. (The children repeat after you). Paul warns everybody that they should not leave the island because there would be big trouble ahead; but the people running the ship did not do what he said. They decided to leave anyway. They thought everything was okay at first. It was nice. A gentle wind came up (Turn the fan on low to show how oft the wind may have been. Have the children to continue to sway.) All of the sudden a strong wind came. (Turn the fan on high to show how the wind may have been. Have the children sway more vigorously.) The pilot could not steer the ship. Do you feel the strong wind? Hold on tight. Now the people knew they were in trouble and should have listened to Paul. The pilot managed to get the ship close to another island called Clauda. It was rough, but the people on the boat were able to get the ship under control. They kept going but realized that they needed to throw some things off the ship. So they did. Letʼs throw some things overboard. (Allow one child at a time to throw some toys out of the boat. ) Now, maybe we can keep going since we let those things go. Thatʼs what the people in the bible story did. But it was still storming and the ship kept going the wrong way. The people on the ship got scared and hungry. Paul told them they should have listened to him. He also told them that they were going to be okay. They made a wrong decision. They should have listened to Paul. But hereʼs the good news; God told Paul that everyone would be all right, only the ship would be lost. You know what happened? Our Memory Verse tells us, [God] made the storm be still.. and brought them to their desired haven (from Psalm 107;29-30). God brought them to a place where they would be safe. That lets us know, now matter how much we mess up, God will be there for us. Music Time Activity If You Love to Follow Jesus (Sing to the tune of If Youʼre Happy and Your Know It. ) If you love to follow Jesus, clap your hands If you love to follow Jesus, clap your hands If you love to follow Jesus, If you love to follow Jesus If you love to follow Jesus, clap your hands... stomp your feet.... nod your head.... wave your hand... touch your toes... turn around... say, Amen! Heritage Activity Flying Fish Story (Have stuffed animals, plastic toys or sketches of different kinds of fish to show the children as you tell the story. You may also want to have a fish bowl with two or three fish in it to show the children.) There are many different kinds of fish. Fish live in water. You can find lots of them in water around places like islands. In Finding Nemo, Nemo is a clown fish. Say clown fish (children repeat after you). Thatʼs right, a clown fish. This is how a clown fish looks. (Show the children the clown fish, and pass it around so they can each see and touch it.) Another kind of fish is a starfish. Hereʼs a starfish. Have you ever seen a starfish? Say, starfish (children repeat after you). (Show the children the starfish, and pass it around so they can each see and touch it.) In Barbados their favorite fish is called a flying fish. Hereʼs one right here. (Show the sketch from the template on page 11 or find a picture elsewhere to show them.) It can swim underwater and fly in the air. Say, flying fish (children repeat after you). It is also a favorite food of people in Barbados. Craft Time Options 1. Scratch Fish Let the children scratch the Scratch Fish with and unsharpened pencil to create a design. Scratch Fish Craft Kits (See description on page 10 of the Island Odyssey Arts and Crafts Leader book). Remove the sharp stick from kit before using.) Unsharpened pencils 2. Finger paint the Island Let the children use finger paint the island found on page 10 of this resource. Assorted colors of finger paint Printed copies of a sketch of an island

4 4 3 Being True to Who You Are Acts 28:1-10 Memory Verse Welcome one another therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. (Romans 15:7) Jesus Loves Me Jesus loves me this I know, For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, They are weak but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus love me, For the Bible tells me so! Trip Tip Jesus welcomes me (Point to self). I will welcome everyone (Spread arms out) with Godʼs love (Place hand over the heart). Have student imitate you and do whenever the Trip Tip is said. You are welcome to this island. I am glad you came my way. Is there anything I can do, To help you enjoy your stay? Paul was on a boat. When it crashed, he and all the people had to swim. When they got to land, they were cold. (Have the children shiver.) It was raining. The people on the island were nice. They built a fire and they said: You are welcome to this island. I am glad you came my way. Is there anything I can do, To help you enjoy your stay? The island was called Malta. (Have the children repeat.) Paul decided to help build the fire. He collected some sticks. Then a snake bit him. The people on the island thought that the snake bit him because he was a bad man. They thought that he had hurt someone very badly. They thought that the snakebite would hurt him and cause him to die. But Paul just shook the snake off and kept on going. He did not even get sick. Then they thought that he was a god. Maybe he could not get sick. Maybe he was not an ordinary person. But Paul was a man who liked to tell people and show people about Jesus. The people on Malta liked to have visitors. A man named Publius invited Paul and the others off of the boat to his house. He said: You are welcome to this island. I am glad you came my way. Is there anything I can do, To help you enjoy your stay? They ate and had a good time for three days. (Get the children to put up three fingers.) Paul found out that Publiusʼ father was very sick. He prayed for him and healed him. Then all the people brought their sick friends and relatives to Paul. He prayed for them and healed all of them. When the boat was ready, the people gave Paul and the other visitor everything they needed to travel. You were welcome on this island. We are glad you came our way. Bible Story We have done everything we could do, As the children come into the room, give each one To help you enjoy your stay. a colorful necklace one and say: Heritage Activity 1. Interactive Game: Ways to say Hello 1. Make a circle. 2. Have the children repeat the Trip Tip: Jesus welcomes me. I will welcome everyone! 3. Have one child in the middle of the circle. When everyone has done what the child in the middle has demonstrated, start over by saying the trip tip. 5. Keep going until each child had had a turn to lead. 2. Matching Game: Hello is Your Passport (See page 16 of the Island Odyssey Heritage/Drama Leader book for instructions. Music Activity Time 1. The More We Get Together Lead the children in singing this song. Have them stand in a circle holding hands as they sing the verse. During the second part, have them point to someone else when they say your, and point to themselves when they say my. Then hold hands again for the last line. 5 5 4 Seeing Who Jesus Is Revelation 1:9-16 Memory Verse I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:8) I m a Child of God (Page 31 of Music & Movement Leader & #10 on the Island Odyssey Music CD) Iʼm a child of God. I will walk the walk. Iʼm a child of God. I will walk the walk. Iʼm a child of God. I will walk the walk. I will run the race. Hold on to the faith. Words and Music: Frederick Burchell 2010 Abingdon Press Trip Tip Jesus is my vision. I will look for him wherever I am. Bible Story (You may need a trumpet or other type of horn of some type to aid in telling the story.) There was a man named John who told people about Jesus. He was punished for it and was sent to an island call Patmos. (Have the children say, Patmos.) It was like he was in time-out! Even though he had to live on the island away from his friends, he still wanted to tell others about Jesus. So God sent John visions (Have the children say, vision, putting their hands to their eyes like they are wearing eyeglasses.) so he could see who Jesus was. This was Godʼs way of encouraging John to keep telling people about Jesus. One day John heard a voice behind him that was as loud as a trumpet. (If you have a horn, blow it loudly so the children can hear how loud it is. If you blow the horn, ask the children: Did that get your attention? ) The voice really got Johnʼs attention. Here are two letters. Do you know what they are? (Some of the children may know, if not, tell them.) A is at the beginning of the alphabet and Z is at the end. (You may want to have an alphabet chart to point to emphasizing A at the beginning and Z at the end.) The voice told John that God is at the beginning, like the A, and at the end, like the Z, and everywhere in between. God is everywhere! The voice told John some other things: 1. Write everything you see in a book (like a letter). 2. Send the letter to seven churches. (Say, How many churches? Letʼs count the churches in this picture. Count with them.) Then John turned around and saw seven lamp stands (Say, How many lamp stands? Letʼs count them.) There was somebody standing in the middle of the lamp stands. John said it was The Son of Man. The Son of Man is Jesus. John saw Jesus! He said Jesus had on a long white robe with a gold band around his chest. His hair was like wool and white as snow. Jesusʼ voice sounded like many waters. Youʼve heard the sound of water, havenʼt you? When you run bath water or if youʼve ever been to a waterfall. Itʼs loud! (Allow a response.) John said Jesus had seven starts in his right hand. Seven stars! Itʼs time to count again! Letʼs count the stars I have in my hand. Something else about Jesus; when he speaks, he speaks Godʼs word. Godʼs word is truth. Jesus tells us the truth to help us do what is right because he us loves us. John saw that Jesusʼ face was bright like the sun. Jesus is the light. Thatʼs why our Trip Tip today is Jesus is my vision. I will look for him wherever I am. (Have the children to repeat phrases of this after you.) Music Activity Time 1. Have children to walk around the room and cup their hands over they eyes like eyeglasses while singing to the tune of Whoʼs Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf : I will look for Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ. I will look for Jesus Christ, Wherever I am. The children can take turns singing inserting the name of one of their classmates in the place of I. End the song singing: We will look for Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ. We will look for Jesus Christ, Wherever we are. Heritage Activity Have a flashlight and a picture of a lighthouse handy as you read the following story: Let me tell you about a man whose name is Nelson Mandela. Can you say that? Repeat after me, Nelson (children repeat) Mandela (children repeat). He grew up in a place called South Africa. Say, South Africa (children repeat). Look at this map. This is where South Africa is (point to it so the children can see). It is a beautiful country, but at one time there were some people who treated other people really bad. Nelson did not like this, so when he grew up, he did like John, and spoke the truth to them. They did not want to hear the truth so they put him on an island away from his friends and family, just like John was put on an island. The island is called Robben Island. Can you say that? Repeat after me, Robben (children repeat) Island (children repeat). On Robben Island there is a lighthouse that helps people on large boats see where they are going when they are traveling at night. This is what a lighthouse looks like. The light shines very bright so those on the boat who are far away can see it. Do you see this flashlight? When it is dark, the flashlight shines bright to help you to see. Let the children take turns turning the flashlight on and off. (You may want to have more than one flashlight to reduce the time for this activity.) Nelson Mandela, the lighthouse and a flashlight are like Jesus. Jesus is our light. He helps us see and know Godʼs truth. Craft Time Options 1. Lighthouse Give each child a lighthouse cutout to color. After the children are finished coloring, roll the paper to the shape of a lighthouse and tape it closed. Glue the bottle cap on top. Lighthouse coloring/cutout (on page 13 of this resource) Crayons or colored markers Scissors Tape Caps from plastic soda/water bottles.

6 6 5 Spreading the Good News Psalm 72:1, 5-14 Memory Verse And he said to them, Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. (Mark 16:15) Trip Tip Jesus reigns. I will share his good news wherever I go. This Little Light of Mine (Lead the children in singing. Create and teach the children hand and arm movements to go with it.) This little light of mine Iʼm gonna let it shine This little light of mine Iʼm gonna let it shine This little light of mine Iʼm gonna let it shine Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. Everywhere I go... All in my home... All in my church... All over the world... Bible Story Time Today I want to share with you a poem that is a prayer. What do you do when you pray? (children respond) Thatʼs right! You put your hands together like this, bow your head and close your eyes. This prayer poem is about a king. His name is Jesus. Listen as I read it to you. I am King; I am the Kingʼs son. I am Jesus, the only One. (say one ) I rule with justice and righteousness. Through me, all nations shall be blessed. (say blessed ) As long as the sun and moon shall last, Iʼll sprinkle rain upon the grass. (say grass ) I have dominion from sea to sea. I will reign eternally. (say eternally ) To the ends of the earth, Iʼm Jesus Christ, From river to river and to every isle. (say isle ) All the people will give me glory, When they know the Gospel story. (say story ) I heal the sick; I deliver the needy. Every child of God is precious to me. (say precious ) From violence and hardship, Iʼll redeem your life For you are precious in my sight. (Say, precious ) Tell the world that I love you. (Say, Jesus loves you! ) Go and proclaim my good news! (Say good news! ) The good news is that God blesses us and has given us Jesus who loves us. Did you know that Jesus loves you and that you are precious in his sight? Hereʼs another song. Please sing it with me if you know it. Jesus loves the little children, All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white; They are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world. Jesus loves all the children and he has got the whole world in his hands. Letʼs tell everybody Jesusʼ good news! Repeat after me: Jesus reigns! (children repeat). I will share (children repeat) the good news (children repeat). Wherever I go (children repeat). Craft Time Options Print and cut out the Good News fan (found on page 10 of this resource); enough for each child. Have the children decorate it with stickers, crayons or markers, or small shapes cut from different colors of construction paper. Good News fan template Stickers Crayons or markers Construction paper Scissors Heritage Activity Time On the island of Fiji, people celebrate and share good news in many ways. One of the ways is by dancing. Do you like to dance? (children respond). Dance for me. Show me a dance you like to do. There is a dance that people in Fiji do called the fan dance. Pick up the fan you made. Letʼs wave it and dance while we listen to the music. Play Not An Island on either the CD or the DVD. Have them wave their fans while they dance. Music Activity Time Have children to sing some of the songs theyʼve sung from each session. For example: 1. He s God the Whole World Have the children hold hands walking in a circle singing the chorus. (See also directions for singing this song on pages 8 & 9 of the Island Odyssey Music and Movement Leader book.) 2. Repeat by the number of children in class 3. All Over the World (Sing along and follow movements in video on Island Odyssey Worship DVD.)
