Share the Message with Others Lesson Passages Acts 8:26-31; 8:30-35; 8:38-39 Lesson for April 30 May 1, 2016 Dr. James Patterson INTRODUCTION You are sitting in the lunchroom at your place of work. The conversation turns to the ongoing controversial issue concerning the origins of earth and mankind, as taught in the public school curriculum. A co-worker claims, No thinking person in the 21 st century could refute all of the proven science about the big bang, evolution, and the rest. Why do those people insist on perpetuating the fairy tales in the Bible? As a born-again believer, what is your response? Do you have the boldness to defend your faith? Would you be afraid that people might think less of you, if you took a stand against the popular scientific view? Might there be repercussions, if you brought your Christian faith into the workplace? Could it impact your career, jeopardize your chance for promotion? Is it politically correct to even mention the Bible? In addition, are you sufficiently equipped with the Word of God and recent research to robustly defend the Biblical position on the origins of the Earth and mankind? BIBLICAL CONTEXT The execution of Stephen, chronicled in Acts 7, set off a wave of persecution against other 1 st Century Christians. Many believers had to keep on the move, to avoid a similar fate. However, no matter how far--or how often--they had to relocate, they carried the Good News of Christ with them, sharing it with those with whom they came in contact. For example, Philip went to Samaria, where he performed physical healings and other miracles. He made many converts. After some time, the Lord sent Philip to a specific area, to perform a specific evangelistic task. Today s lesson focuses on that Divine assignment, and encourages
us to think about opportunities we might have to explain the Gospel or to win people to Christ. Just as Philip found his courage and boldness to witness for Christ in those perilous times from the Holy Spirit, that same Power is available to us today. LESSON PASSAGE 1: Prior to the Event Acts 8: Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Go south to the road the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means queen of the Ethiopians ). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, Go to that chariot and stay near it. God s angel, serving as a Divine Messenger, gave Philip specific directional details about the next step in his ministry. Philip was to leave right away for a southern road that connected Jerusalem with the city of Gaza. However, there was no information about the purpose of this trip. Philip was expected to trust and obey, knowing that the details would come as needed. Upon his arrival, Philip s eye was drawn to an Ethiopian man in a chariot, most likely accompanied by a driver and a few bodyguards. As it turns out, the Ethiopian was a royal official, in service to his queen. Specifically, he was in charge of her entire treasury. The man is described as a eunuch, which could mean he had been physically neutered, or it could mean that he had taken a vow of sexual abstinence as a condition of his service. In any case, he was returning from Jerusalem, where he had worshipped at the Temple. Apparently, he was considering a conversion to Judaism. He was reading aloud from the prophet Isaiah. By all outward appearances, he was a man of some wealth and education. Guidance to Philip next came not from an angel, but directly from the Holy Spirit. Philip was to join with the chariot and engage the official. This was
a Divine appointment, through which someone who was seeking the Lord would receive the necessary information for his spiritual conversion to become complete. LESSON PASSAGE 2: The Interaction between Philip and the Ethiopian Official Acts 8: Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. Do you understand what you are reading? Philip asked. 31 How can I, he said, unless someone explains it to me? So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth. 34 The eunuch asked Philip, Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else? 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. Without reservation, Philip ran up to the chariot. He didn t stop to ponder if the guards would even let him pass. He didn t fret over a possible language barrier. He did not hold back, out of fear of being rebuffed. Philip recognized the official was reading text from Isaiah 53. With simplicity and directness, Philip asked the man if he understood the passage. The man did not understand, but he clearly wanted to. He invited Philip to join him in the chariot. Apparently, the Holy Spirit was working in the official s heart as well as Philip s, because the Ethiopian was a willing student. Philip explained that Isaiah 53:7-8 showed that Jesus not Isaiah-- is the Lamb of God, led to the slaughter for the sins of the world. Philip likely
pointed out the Scriptural prediction of the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, and he showed the Ethiopian that Jesus died to bear, and to atone for, the sins of all, including the official s sins (Isaiah 53:9-12). LESSON PASSAGE 3: The Conclusion Acts 8: As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized? 37 (Some manuscripts include here) Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may. The eunuch answered, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. There is a good chance that the Ethiopian had seen (or at least heard of) recent converts being baptized in Jerusalem. After Philip had assured him that the only requirement for baptism was to believe in Christ with all of his heart, the official sought to make an outward demonstration of his newfound commitment. Because he did believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the official shouted, Stop the chariot, as soon as they came to a body of water. Philip baptized him straight away. Philip had fulfilled his assignment; the official had accepted the Spirit s prompting and found new life. This was also an excellent witness to all spectators, and Biblical history was made. Following this encounter, the Spirit took Philip away. This may have been a miraculous exit or just an interesting choice of words, but it is clear that the assignment was finished. The official was thrilled with his new Spiritual status, and Philip was on to further evangelical service, travelling north toward Caesarea.
LIFE APPLICATION We never know when the Holy Spirit is going to call on us to evangelize or to defend the faith. Therefore, we need to work constantly to equip ourselves with a thorough familiarity with Scripture. We should read the Bible regularly and use the many other tools available to us in this day and age: regular church attendance, Bible study classes, Christian radio, and television shows, written commentaries, trusted Internet sources, books, inspirational music, and more. Like Philip, we too must be prepared to witness for Christ whenever unexpected opportunities present themselves. Further, we must be careful not to allow those who reject our message to get under our skin. If we are to be effective witnesses for Christ, we cannot allow ourselves to lose our temper, meet harshness with harshness, or close the door forever to further discussion. The Great Commission directs us to: 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19-20) Our entire lives should be spent going. We have all received gifts that we can use to help fulfill the great commission. A static Christian is not a functioning Christian. We are not to rest on our laurels, but to continuously work for Christ. Additionally: He said to his disciples, The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask Him to send out more workers for His fields. (Matthew 9:37-38) Does go only refer to missionary work in other countries? No. We are to go even while we drive, shop, work at the office, etc. We are never off duty. Every event in our lives brings an opportunity to witness or model.
Like the sign said in front of the church: Preach the gospel at all times. Use words, if necessary. Note that when Jesus sent out the original disciples, they immediately concentrated on evangelizing and discipling people who were just like themselves other Jews. It took them a while to get comfortable with the idea that Jesus truly was for all nations, even the Gentiles. Today, we need to be equally comfortable with the necessity of working with non- Western peoples. As Jesus was not just a Savior for the Jews, neither is He only a Savior for the West. Neither is He a Savior for just one age group, so we shouldn t ignore those people younger or older than ourselves. We should also keep in mind the words of Matthew 13:8-- But some seeds fell on fertile soil and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted. Although the farmer sowed good seed, not all the seed sprouted, and even the plants that grew had varying yields. We shouldn t get discouraged if we do not always see immediate results from our witness. Belief cannot be forced, or rushed. It takes time for a person to accept something that changes the very foundations of their life. When we ask people to make Jesus the focal point of their lives, we should give them time to weigh the matter. Note that Jesus spent three years working with His disciples before they were equipped to function on their own. If Jesus spent 3 years teaching Peter, we shouldn t think spending 15 minutes with someone is going to give them all the tools they need to become a practicing Christian. CLOSING PRAYER: Heavenly Father: Help us respond to the Holy Spirit concerning when we should witness and how we should witness. Help us to defend our faith with love, poise, and grace in the face of disinterest and hostility. We want to serve you, but we often lack the energy, the boldness, or the right words. Please energize us to work on Your behalf. Please give us
the confidence to draw upon the authority of Jesus Christ to spread Your plan of salvation. Encourage us to study Your words with more care and enthusiasm, so that we have a suitable arsenal of Scripture to represent You well at any occasion. Above all, help us to model Godly behavior, so that our own lives clearly reflect the righteousness and love of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We pray that each person here will take seriously our responsibility to play an active role in pointing the lost to the hope found in Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
