Join us for lots of fun and food! Annual Meeting is Sunday, January 28 th We hope you can join us for a one-hour Annual Meeting on Sunday, Jan. 28 th beginning at 11:45am. A delicious Soup Potluck will be on display for our liking! Let the church office know if you can donate a crock pot of your favorite soup. One business item is to find volunteers to attend the Zumbro River Conference: RENEW! Event on Saturday, Feb. 24 th from 10am 3:30pm. The topic is Radical Hospitality in Churches. We also need two volunteers to go to Synod Assembly in Mankato (includes a paid overnight at a hotel) on May 4 th -5 th. Trinity Mission Statement To proclaim God s grace in Christ through Word and Sacrament; To nurture faith through Christian education and fellowship; and To bring the Gospel to the world community through Christian witness, sacrifice, and love.
2 Church! The other good news we score the touchdown of faith through the grace of God. It s not by our own merit, although we need to at least get on the field of faith. The Minnesota Vikings Football team is on its way to the Super Bowl! At least that is what we hope for, right? Even if you aren t an avid football fan, this would be lots of fun, especially as the Super Bowl will be hosted in Minneapolis! If you think about it, football and faith kind of go together. There are some key aspects of the game that relate well with what we do as the church. If you remember, I did two sermons on this fascinating aspect several years ago, when the Vikings looked pretty good but never made it to the Super Bowl. I hope I don t jinx it by reminding you of the key aspects! Either way, put on the purple jersey and hold on to that cross! Here we go with the similarities: 1. The Play Book Each week football coaches are designing plays to fit the system of their team so that the goal of victory can be attained. The players memorize the plays and the coaches refer to their notes during the game. As people of Faith, our play book is God s Word, the Bible. We memorize it, we take notes on it, we carry the plays with us in our hearts and minds so that victory, courage and joy can be experienced. 2. The Huddle The team circles up often to get on the same page and to inspire each other for the next play. This is exactly what church worship does. It s about community and getting everyone involved in the action. We then have strength in numbers for what comes next in life. If you re missing in the huddle, you will feel it. 3. The Opponent The football team gets on the field to win; to overcome the foe. The Christian wakes up every day to another kind of foe the devil, evil, hopelessness, what have you. We need to remind each other that we are Easter people who live by hope each day. We can withstand the temptations to give up. Through prayer and a positive attitude, we can have victory over this miserable foe! 4. The Touchdown The guys on the football field have one direction the END ZONE. They want to score. That is the whole point of the game. For Christians, our end zone is heaven! Like scripture says, we lay aside our sins that hold us back and we strive toward the prize which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. And the good news is that we don t have to do it ourselves. Faith is meant to be a team concept. It s called the 2 5. The slap on the Butt Well in the Bible, that is called the Holy Kiss. This is how we are to encourage each other. Nowadays, doing either in church will get your picture in the paper, but you get the point! Football players need to encourage and cheer each other on. As members of the church, we need to be mindful to support each other throughout the week. As the hymn says: Blest Be the Tie that Binds our Hearts in Christian Love. 6. The Long-Snapper He doesn t get much glory in a game, but if he gets injured, everyone feels it. Even this less then popular position is a huge piece in the game. Similarly, everyone in church is needed. There is no one more important than the other. St Paul writes that each member of the body of Christ is of utmost importance. We need to treat each other that way. And finally for now 7. The Uniforms Simply put, They will know we are Christians by our Love! The Bible says that we need to put on love and compassion for the sake of our neighbors. God bless you all and cheer on the team! Both Teams! Pastor Paul Adult Education in January There will not be Adult Forums between services in January. We ll start up again for a 6-week series during Lent (beginning Sunday, Feb. 11 th ) called The Jesus Creed. This video based series explores the great Shema of the Old Testament, and how Jesus transformed the commands of loving God and loving others. Our regular Bible Studies will continue each week as we explore the upcoming Sunday readings. Join us on Tuesdays at 6:30am at church and 10am at the Villa.
