1 METROPOLITAN INTERDENOMINATIONAL CHURCH CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE SUNDAY, April 10, 2016 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER PREPARATION The Pastor s entrance and the beginning of the musical prelude are the calls to silent, personal preparation for the worship of God. THE GATHERING LITANY We are standing on Holy ground, And I know that there are angels all around. Let us praise Jesus now, We are standing in God s presence on Holy ground. Let our lives be worthy of the Lamb s power; may the Lord use our weakness to shame the strong. Let our lives be worthy of the Lamb s wealth; may the Lord use our poverty to shame the greedy. Let our lives be worthy of the Lamb s wisdom; may the Lord use our folly to shame the shrewd. Let our lives be worthy of the Lamb s might; may the Lord use our frailty to shame the great. Let our lives be worthy of the Lamb s honor; may the Lord use our lowliness to shame the lofty. Let our lives be worthy of the Lamb s glory; may the Lord use our humility to shame the exalted. May all power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory be unto the Lamb of God, forever and forever!
2 OPENING HYMN I AM THINE, O LORD I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me; But I long to rise in the arms of faith, And be closer drawn to Thee. REFRAIN: Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where Thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, By the power of grace divine; Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, And my will be lost in Thine. O the pure delight of a single hour That before Thy throne I spend, When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend! There are depths of love that I cannot know Till I cross the narrow sea; There are heights of joy that I may not reach Till I rest in peace with Thee. WELCOME Visitors standing If you are here for the first time, we are delighted that you came. If you are dropping in for a second or third visit, we are glad you found something you were looking for. We hope you will be challenged by our worship and that you will come back again. If you are looking for a faith community, we would welcome you as a part of our church family. When you are officially welcomed as a visitor, you will receive a Visitor s Information Card. Please fill it out, and return it to the Pastor, or place it in the offering plate. WELCOME! 3 PREPARATORY PERIOD MESSAGE THE SENIOR SERVANT LIVING OUR CALLING 21 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. 2 Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We will go with you. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, Children, you have no fish, have you? They answered him, No. 6 He said to them, Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord! When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. 9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish that you have just caught. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, Who are you? because they knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs. 16 A second time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Tend my sheep. 17 He said to him the third time, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go. 19 (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, Follow me. John 21:1-19 SERMON NOTES
4 RESPONSE Please do not leave the sanctuary or in any other manner create a distraction during the invitational period. This is a moment of unparalleled importance. MOMENTS OF REFLECTION Voices of Metropolitan INVITATION TO LIFE IN CHRIST This church will welcome into its membership any persons who love and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and who promise to live according to His Laws of Love, recognizing all people as brothers and sisters for whom He gave His life. THE LORD S SUPPER Communion Prayer We do not presume to come to this, Thy table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in Thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs from under Thy table. But Thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to partake of this sacrament of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, that we may walk in newness of life and grow to reflect Thy Spirit in all things forevermore. Amen. (We will eat and drink together after all have been served.) FELLOWSHIP CIRCLE We ve come too far to turn back now; By the grace of God we re gonna make it somehow. Nobody knows the trouble we ve seen; We ve come too far to turn back now. I SEEK ROOM FOR PEACE I seek the enlargement of my heart that there may be room for Peace. Already there is room enough for chaos. There is in every day s experience much that makes for confusion and bewilderment. Often I do not understand quite how my relations with others become frayed and chaotic. Sometimes this chaos is a positive thing; it means that something new, creative, and whole is beginning to pull together the tattered fragments of my relationship with a person and to fashion it into something which delights the spirit and makes glad the heart. Sometimes the chaos is negative, a sign of degeneration in a relationship once meaningful and good. There is room enough for chaos. But the need of my heart is for room for Peace: Peace of mind that inspires singleness of purpose; Peace of heart that quiets all fears and uproots all panic; Peace of spirit that filters through all confusions and robs them of their power. These I seek now. I know that here in this quietness my life can be infused with Peace. Therefore, before God, I seek the enlargement of my heart at this moment, that there may be room for Peace. 6 MIDWEEK FELLOWSHIP MEAL SCHEDULE April 20 Circle 5 May 11 Circle 1 April 27 Circle 6 May 18 Circle 2 May 4 Circle 7 May 25 Circle 3 METROPOLITAN INTERDENOMINATIONAL CHURCH CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE Sunday, April 10, 2016, 2016 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Metropolitan Interdenominational Church is a community of believers inclusive of all and alienating to none, leading the way to spiritual growth by sharing God s love with the world. THE THIRD SHIFT THE THIRD SHIFT has to be the most difficult time for anyone to work. Everything about natural order makes us believe that 11pm until 7am is a time for sleep. Yet we know there are many people in the world for whom THE THIRD SHIFT is their time of labor. This was certainly the case for the men of Jesus day who earned their livings fishing at sea. In John 21, Simon Peter was right back where The Lord had found him three years earlier. However, this time the scene is not just the aftermath of failure at fishing all night, but it was also the aftermath of his failure as a disciple who had denied Jesus. THE THIRD SHIFT meant back to business as usual. THE THIRD SHIFT meant trying to find a place to escape grief. THE THIRD SHIFT meant a place to hide from guilt and shame. THE THIRD SHIFT was all of this and more for Simon Peter as he struggled to carry on with life after Jesus death. Indeed all of us have our moments when we stay up all night long trying to get away from the relentless logic of our experiences or behaviors. So we can all identify with our saintly brother of old as he tries to work his way through his self-imposed madness. Knowing this to be true, we can individually and collectively find solace in the awareness that the same Redeemer who stood on the shore calling out to the disciples back then is still standing by the sea of life calling out to us. In spite of ourselves, he is still feeding, forgiving and commissioning us as we serve him every hour of the day, including THE THIRD SHIFT. (Reprinted from Sunday, April 18, 2010) -Senior Servant
