The lessons for each week are divided up into a five day study. Each day will cover a section of the scripture we are studying for this lesson. As you READ each section of scripture pray for God to REVEAL His truths to you so that you will be able to RESPOND to what God is teaching you and you will be able to apply His Word in your life. Do not be discouraged if you have difficulties with some of the questions. When we get together each week we will have a teaching time to help with your understanding of each verse. Because faith expresses itself through love, you can check your love for others as a way to monitor your faith. NIV Life Application Bible, pg License vs. Liberty (Freedom to sin vs. Freedom to serve) Galatians 5 Lesson 6 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13 Day 1 Galatians 5:1-7 1) It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. 2) Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3) And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. 4) You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law, you have fallen from grace. 5) For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. 6) For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love. 1. According to vs. 1, why did Christ set us free? 2. What does this freedom mean for you personally? Since the death and resurrection of Christ, there is no spiritual value to circumcision; it is only a physical operation. Warren W. Wiersbe, The Wiersbe NT Bible Commentary, pg What does Paul specifically tell us to do in vs. 1? How can you do this? Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 1

4. Read vs According to these verses, what are the consequences of receiving circumcision as the means to be saved? a) Christ will be b) You will need to keep the whole c) You will be from Christ d) You have fallen from 5. According to vs. 5, if you are saved by grace through faith what do you receive? What does this mean for you? 6. What do you think this means: faith works through love? Read James 2: The believer is no longer under law; he is under grace. (Romans 6:14) This does not mean that we are outlaws and rebels. It simply means that we no longer need the external force of law to keep us in God s will, because we have the internal leading of the Holy Spirit of God. (Romans8:1-4) Warren W. Wiersbe, The Wiersbe NT Bible Commentary, pg. 571 Day 2 Galatians 5:7-12 7) You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8) This persuasion did not come from Him who calls you. 9) A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 10) I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will adopt no other view; but the one who Is disturbing you will bear his judgment, whoever he is. 11) But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished. 12) I wish that those who are troubling you would even mutilate themselves. Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 2

1. What does Paul say the Galatians are being hindered from in vs. 1? 2. Have you ever been hindered in your race of life by anyone? If so, who are what hindered you? How did you get back onto the right path? 3. Go back and read Galatians 1:6. What did Paul say about this persuasion he is talking about in vs. 8? 4. Read Acts 17:11 and I Thessalonians 5: What are these Scriptures teaching you about different persuasions that you may hear of? 5. How is Paul encouraging the Galatians in vs. 10? 6. Read Mark 9:42. What does Jesus teach about His judgment on those who cause people to fall into sin according to this verse? Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 3

7. Have you ever been rejected by people because of the stand that you took for Christ? Read John 15: What are these verses teaching you? 8. As you reflect on your life today, are you running well? Are you staying in the lane of grace or being side-tracked by legalism and sin? The cross is an offense to man. It offends him or stumbles him because it tells him that there is nothing he can do to earn salvation. It gives no place to the flesh and its efforts. It spells an end to human works. William MacDonald, Believer s Bible Commentary, pg Christian liberty is not a license to sin but an opportunity to serve. Warren W. Wiersbe, The Wiersbe NT Bible Commentary, pg. 573 Day 3 Galatians 5: ) For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14) For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 15) But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. 1. According to verse 13, what is God s definition of freedom? The just do it approach to life isn t freedom, it s just another form of bondage. Charles R. Swindoll, Swindoll s Living Insights NT Commentary, Galatians/Ephesians, pg How would you describe the world s view of freedom? Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 4

God s grace should never be used as an excuse for sin. Charles R. Swindoll, Swindoll s Living Insights NT Commentary, Galatians/Ephesians, pg. 122 Liberty should result in love, not legalism or license.. By living a life of service through love, we avoid legalism and license. Charles R. Swindoll, Swindoll s Living Insights NT Commentary, Galatians/Ephesians, pg Read Jude 4. How are these people described? Do you know of anyone like this? 4. How many people do you know that live by the world s standard of freedom that are really at peace and happy in their lives? 5. Fill in the chart below to help you understand what you have been freed from and what you are freed for in your relationship with Christ. Freed from Freed for Romans 5:9 Romans 6:18, II Corinthians 5:21 Romans 8:1 I Peter 4:2, I John 2:17 Romans 6:22 II Corinthians 5:18-20 I Corinthians 10:13 Romans 12:4-5 Colossians 1:13 Romans 8:29 Galatians 3:13 II Corinthians 9:6-11 Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 5

6. Read vs. 14. How does Paul summarize the law? 7. Take a look at your life, are you seeing a life of serving one another? How are these verses speaking to you today? 8. According to vs. 15, what does legalism bring into the church? The Spirit s ministry is to engage the believer with the Lord Jesus. William MacDonald, Believer s Bible Commentary, pg Walk = take each step of the Christian life in dependence on the Spirit to have victory over the flesh and its works. Ryrie Study Bible, pg Some people view the Christian life as following a set of strict rules that stifle our personalities and suppress our desire for fun. But faith in Christ actually sets us free to become the people that God created us to be. This allows us to enjoy life fully. As His Spirit transforms us on the inside, any changes that we make in our dress, our talk, our behavior, or our lifestyle should be expressions of our love for Him. As we grow in our desire to become more like Christ, we discover that the life of grace truly sets our spirits free. Dianne Neal Matthews, The One Year Women of the Bible, pg. 184 Day 4 Galatians 5: ) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17) For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18) But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19) Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 6

Live each day controlled and guided by the Holy Spirit. Then the words of Christ will be in your mind, the love of Christ will be behind your actions, and the power of Christ will help you control your selfish desires. NIV Life Application Bible, pg ) Idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21) Envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23) Gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 1. What promise is given to you in verse 16? 2. Read Luke 9:23. What does Jesus teach us in this verse about how we can walk by the Spirit? 3. According to vs. 17, what two things are in conflict with each other? What does this verse tell us is the result of that conflict? 4. Read Romans 7: What comfort do these verses give you? 5. Read vs If you are completely honest with yourself, are there any of these sins that you struggle with? Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 7

6. Read vs. 16 again. What is this verse teaching you about overcoming those sins? How can you practically walk by the Spirit and have victory over these temptations and sins? The contrast between works and fruit is important. A machine in a factory works and turns out a product, but it could never manufacture fruit. Fruit must grow out of life, and in the case of the believer, it is the life of the Spirit. Warren W. Wiersbe, The Wiersbe NT Bible Commentary, pg The growing of fruit is a natural process in the life of a believer. You can t force it, but you can help it grow well. How can you practically cultivate more fruit in your life? Read John 15: Read I John 2:15. What is this verse teaching you about those who have a lifestyle of practicing sin? 9. Against such things there is no law.. what does this statement mean? God could have removed the fleshly nature from believers at the time of their conversion, but He did not choose to do so. Why? He wanted to keep them continually reminded of their own weakness; to keep them continually dependent on Christ, their Priest and Advocate; and to cause them to praise unceasingly the One who saved such worms. Instead of removing the old nature, God gave us His own Holy Spirit to indwell us. God s Spirit and our flesh are perpetually at war, and will continue to be at war until we are taken home to heaven. The believer s part in the conflict is to yield to the Spirit. William MacDonald, Believer s Bible Commentary, pg Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 8

The law tried to change a man from the outside in and failed. The law was limited to conforming conduct and altering actions. But the Spirit changes a man from the inside out. He transforms character and alters attitudes. Sandy Adams, Chapter by Chapter, pg. 192 We must remember that this fruit is produced to be eaten, not to be admired and put on display. People around us are starving for love, joy, peace, and all the other graces of the Spirit. When they find them in our lives, they know that we have something they lack. We do not bear fruit for our own consumption; we bear fruit that others might be fed and helped, and that Christ might be glorified. The flesh may manufacture results that bring praise to us, but the flesh cannot bear fruit that brings glory to God. It takes patience, an atmosphere of the Spirit, walking in the light, the seed of the Word of God, and a sincere desire to honor Christ. Warren W. Wiersbe, The Wiersbe NT Bible Commentary, pg. 576 Day 5 Galatians 5: ) Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25) If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26) Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another. 1. What have believers done to their flesh according to vs. 24? Read Galatians 2:20. How is it possible for us to do this? 2. What do you think Paul is saying in vs. 25. What is the difference between living by the Spirit and walking by the Spirit? Circle of Sisters in Christ Women s Ministry - Calvary Chapel Lexington, 1156 Barr Rd., Lexington, SC (803) Page 9

3. According to vs. 26, what can happen in our life is we don t keep our guard up and don t stay filled with the Spirit each and every day? We should expect nothing from ourselves but in everything depend on God to enable us to nail the passions and desires of our sinful natures to His cross. When we see our inability to have goodness of our own, then our attitude becomes true trust in the work of God s Spirit. Andrew Murray, The Best of Andrew Murray on Prayer, August 19 The Spirit is not needed just when we pray or just for our work for God s kingdom. God gives us His Spirit to be in us the whole day. We need Him most in the middle of our daily work because there the world has such power to lead us away from God. We need to ask the Father every morning for a fresh renewal of His Spirit. During the course of the day, let us remind ourselves the Spirit is with us. Andrew Murray, The Best of Andrew Murray on Prayer, May 10 I have a glove here in my hand. The glove cannot do anything by itself, but when my hand is in it, it can do many things. True, it is not the glove, but my hand in the glove that acts. We are gloves. It is the Holy Spirit in us who is the hand, who does the job. We have to make room for the hand so that every finger is filled.
