Special Collection Next Weekend Next weekend, we will take up the annual Black and Indian Mission collection. This collection exists to help diocesan communities build the Church and preach the Gospel of Jesus among the African American, Native American, and Alaska Native people of God. Your donations help fund parish-based catechetical programs, support teacher and catechist professional development, encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and create diocesan structures, such as our own archdiocesan Office of Multicultural Ministry that support ministry and evangelization in these diverse cultural communities. 3 Dear Friends in Christ, Ash Wednesday is just a few days away. Now is the time to prepare to keep a holy Lent by deciding on a path to a more intense and intentional following of the Lord Jesus in the Way of the Cross. We will pray the Stations of the Cross each Friday of Lent at 7 p.m., and immediately after the Stations, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will continue in the chapel until midnight. Lent is the perfect time to go to Confession as a preparation for Easter, and I urge you not to wait until the end of the 40 days to do this. There will be a large number of priests hearing Confessions at St. Bernadette at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, March 13; and, confessions will be heard here each week with extra times... please watch the bulletin. Please remember that every Friday of Lent is a day of abstinence from meat, and that both Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence. Because Lent is also a preparation for the renewal of our Baptismal promises at Easter, please be mindful of this as we pray the Creed each week. The Creed should remind us that we have been purchased at a great price by the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, into whose death we are plunged by our Baptism. And that is why we should always seek to conform our lives to His so that we can live in the power of His Resurrection as a new creation by grace through faith, first given to us in Baptism. This we can and should do through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and the reason for urgency in a renewed effort to be faithful disciple will be given on Ash Wednesday: Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. FAST & ABSTINENCE Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding from age 14 onwards. Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry is requesting your help with the following items: Seat Belt Covers, measuring 13 x 9 and made of worsted yarn, they are used to lay across seat belts for those who have a chemo port; also need are helmet liners for our military, no wool please, and they can be tan, black, green... K of C Chili Cook-Off The Knights of Columbus annual Chili Cook-Off contest is being held Saturday, February 17. It will run from 6-8 p.m. in the Marian Center. The is no entry fee for contestants. Bring it all: red, white, spicy, mild, meat or beans! Then we will see who gets bragging rights for 2018! Awards will be given to the top 3 Chili Chefs: $50/ first place; $25/second place; $15/third place. Bring your best dessert and enter it for judging and you could win $25 cash prize. Contestants remember to bring all you sides: cheese, crackers, onions, secret sauce and you will have the judges eating out of your pot! Paid admission allows you to taste and judge: $5/adults; $3/children (6-12); free for children five and under. We will have hot dogs for the kids. 5 YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY The Young Adult Ministry will hold its first planning meeting for 2018 on February 18, 1:30 p.m., in the St. Joachim Room. We will be putting together a calendar of events, so come with your ideas and excitement! How do we know God s will? is the theme for our Cincinnati Supercharge Your Soul Sunday retreat. Father Nathan Cromly, CSJ will be our speaker for the day at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. This retreat is for young adults, Cost: $25 w/o boxed lunch; $35 w/boxed lunch. It provides a warm, caring and confidential environment in which participants can learn practical information and gain hope for the future. Each session will focus on a different topic such as: What s Happening to Me, Facing My Depression, Financial Survival, along with other practical sessions. We are beginning a new 6-week session of our faith-sharing group for the bereaved. In this facilitated program we will learn how to grow from our grief, honor our loved ones and find hope in life once more. 7 Let the F R Y I N G Begin! The sun will come out tomorrow and the Lenten Fish Fry will return on Friday, February 16! Those delicious Knights of Columbus sponsored Lenten Friday feasts, begin February 16 and continue each Friday until March 23. Serving times are 4:30-7:30 p.m., in the Marian Center. Boston scrod, shrimp or pizza; hush puppies with every meal size, with a choice of two sides from the six different sides, including the Vegetable of the Week! Meal sizes will be: Large Meal, $10.00, including 2 filets and 2 sides; Regular Meal, $8.00, includes 1 filet and 2 sides; Small Meal (age 6-12) $6.00 (adults or children 6-12 half portions of Fish or Shrimp and 2 sides); children under 5 eat free.
