A Facebook post I saw suggests that this presents to the greeting card industry some creative possibilities. A card that reads, You are dust, but awfully loveable dust. Or, Roses are red, violets are blue. Lent is beginning, NO chocolate for you! Most of us don t think of Valentine s Day as a religious holiday, but it began as one in the year 496. In that year, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 as Saint Valentine s day to honor two Christian martyrs, both named Valentine, who had been executed by the Roman Empire two centuries earlier when Rome was still violently anti-christian. Valentine was a common name in the Roman Empire. One of the Valentines honored on February 14 was a Christian priest living in Rome who died in 269 on that day. The other Valentine was a bishop in Terni, just outside of Rome, who died in 197. Almost nothing definite is known about these two martyrs or how they died. A legend that arose some time later says that Emperor Claudius II issued a law that forbade priests from marrying Christian couples. Claudius did this both to persecute Christians and also to force young Christian men to remain as single soldiers in his army. The priest, Valentine, disobeyed this order and performed marriages for many Christian couples. When Claudius found out about this, Valentine was arrested and killed. Therefore, Valentine was remembered for sacrificing himself so that others could celebrate their love. Is this year s joining of St. Valentine s Day and Ash Wednesday an uneasy marriage of cultural opposites, or is there some intrinsic connection between the two? As always, love is the connection. Ash Wednesday literally presses into our foreheads the realization that we are utterly connected to and dependent upon God, who creates us, shapes us and Continued on next page

2 A Connection, continued from page 1 breathes life into us each moment. Too often we fear that we are in this world on our own and that it s all up to us to get by and make something of our self. Therefore, we resort to all the survival strategies: grabbing, pushing, lying, killing, self-promoting. The ashes of Lent awaken us to our fear and foolishness. More importantly, the truth-telling ashes of Lent urge us back to God, who loves us deeply and will never abandon us. Return to God, with all your heart, the Source of grace and mercy. Come, seek the tender faithfulness of God. St. Augustine once said, Love God and do what you want. When I first heard those words, they seemed so hedonistic and irresponsible. In my Sunday School classes growing up, no one ever said to me, Do what you want! Then someone explained to me Augustine s thinking: When we love God with all of our heart and soul and mind, then our hearts are set free to follow God. Loving God, our lives are turned in the direction of what God loves and wants as well, namely peace, compassion, healing and justice. So perhaps that is the gift that this year s co-incidence of Valentine s Day and Ash Wednesday brings to us. They both awaken us to the deepest Love there is and urge us to let that Love be the center and shape of our lives. Faith, hope and love, said St. Paul, and the greatest of these is love. In Christ, Bishop Rick Jaech

Our Synod clergy are invited to join us for this special service at Trinity Lutheran, 2021 Washington Way, Longview. The Sacred Chrism is an integral part of the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and ordination. Named after Christ himself (chrism = Christ-ing ), it bestows a share in Jesus s own anointing with the Holy Spirit. Just following the washing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the baptized are anointed with fragrant oils on the crown of the head, signifying the royal dignity, the prophetic vocation, and the call to holiness of all the baptized. Bishop Rickel of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia will preach. Bishop Jaech will preside. Please RSVP if you would like to attend, swwsynod@plu.edu.

4 Joseph s Coat Today By Pastor Kim Latterell, Synod Bishop s Associate Joseph had one coat of many colors. According his story, that coat led to jealousy, resentment and division among his many brothers over issues of love, acceptance and favoritism. In a somewhat similar manner, God has created one human race, it too of many colors. According to His story, that variety of tones has also led to jealousy, judgment and tremendous division among many human brothers and sisters regarding similar issues. The resultant racism against certain colors of humanity runs deep and wide among many, even within the family of faith. Currently, a significant portion of our citizenship and political leadership propose that one of those many colors is meant to predominate the population of our nation. Along with certain levels of wealth and education, skin color is again a factor in official willingness to receive immigrants interested in becoming Americans. There is a strong sense of making America white again. White skin, white cultural, white religion, white heritage, white preference. Those of another skin tone are deemed less worthy and less welcome. And the nations they arrive from are openly deemed and derided as S-hole nations. The language used is blunt but the attitude is not new. Similar negative reactions by already arrived American immigrants against newly arrived ones were expressed against Irish, Chinese, Italian, Polish, German and others when they sought refuge on the western side of the Statue of Liberty. It s not potty-mouth language that troubles most. It s the unwelcoming heart behind the words. One can find prejudiced responses even in Scripture. I imagine when Jonah was told to go and invite the awful Ninevites to repent and believe, his reaction (in English) would have sounded like: H*ll no God, not that S-hole of a city! Or when Phillip invites Nathaniel to come and meet the potential Jewish Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, Nathaniel s response (in English) can be taken as: What possible good can come from that S-hole Nazareth! Even Paul leans into the bluntness of scatological language when, after listing all the positives that ought to make him the top of God s chosen people, he simply writes all his worth and accomplishments off as so much skubala. In Greek, the word literally means sh*t. God, it seems has no problem loving, caring for, and calling upon all nations, cities and people. According the long history of His-story, such is the overarching aim of God s deepest, strongest intent. No matter the color of skin, or hair, or eyes; no matter the area of origin; no matter the level of wealth or education or lack thereof; no matter the value put against the variety of cultures, God intends to include and welcome all and invites those whom he calls to do no less. And that, that is the no-sh*t gospel of good and gracious news for all creation.

8 On the Road, continued from page 7 January 30 Meeting with Governor Jay Inslee at his office in Olympia with the leadership of Faith Action Network to thank him for his work as a public servant and to ask his support on education, health and employment legislation. Our Southwestern Washington Synod is a member of the Faith Action Network, which is a merger of the Lutheran Public Policy Office, led by Rev. Paul Benz, and the Washington Council of Churches. While in Olympia, I also visited 49 th District State Senator Annette Cleveland, who is a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Vancouver, WA. A valentine gift from God

9 A Valentine from God By ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton Love means never having to say you re sorry (Love Story). Forgiveness guaranteed. Repentance optional (sign in front of a Lutheran church). This year Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day fall on the same date. It seems like an odd pairing Ash Wednesday, a day of solemn repentance and honest reckoning of our brokenness, and Valentine s Day, a lighthearted celebration of love. Do we fast and pray and commit to rigorous spiritual disciplines, or do we dive in to Champagne and chocolate? Is it a day of contrition or of abandon? Do we abstain or do we indulge? It s strange how our culture divides up human experience and the way it puts a premium on happiness, self-fulfillment and conflict avoidance, particularly in personal relationships. The good life is untroubled. There should be no worries and certainly no cause to acknowledge pain or wrong. It s a life of endless possibility fueled by positive thinking and affirmation. It should be perky, upbeat and fun. And somehow love needs to be shaped the same way. Certainly there is no room for Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day in the same space. The two quotes above are the manifesto for this worldview. They hold out the promise of painfree, investment-free, responsibility-free relationships. They encourage an unexamined life, a kind of Teflon existence to which consequences don t stick. They sound like the real thing but are as poor a substitute as the sentiments printed on the little sugar valentine hearts are for a real expression of love. In this world, Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day make no sense together. But here we are. This Feb. 14 will hold two holy days. And, in our life in Christ, they aren t incompatible but inseparable. The history of salvation is one extended love story between God and God s creation, between God and humankind, between God and God s people. We were created in love for love. Real love. Love that is solid and deep and unflinching. Love that is true enough to be honest. God s work of reconciliation in Christ is God s eyes-wide-open acknowledgment of human rebellion and sin, the undeniable fact that all is not well no matter how hard we try to fix it or deny it. The remedy was the all-in, complete love of the incarnation, crucifixion and death of Christ. Jesus meets us right in the middle of our pain the pain we feel and the pain we cause others and without minimizing the depth of our offense, offers forgiveness and new life. Love does not mean never having to say you re sorry love means being able to say you re sorry. Lutherans point out that grace is a gift, but sometimes we get a little carried away. I believe the sign in front of one of our congregations that claimed Forgiveness guaranteed. Continued next page

10 A Valentine from God, continued from page 9 Repentance optional was trying to announce good news. Instead, it sent passers-by in the wrong direction. Our reconciled new life in Christ not only makes it possible for us to strip away any illusion of a whole and holy life that we bring about by ourselves, it compels us to repent. Theologian and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned us about this cheap grace. He wrote: Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate (The Cost of Discipleship). So, Ash Wednesday is a valentine from God, one that invites us to enter deep into the mystery of true love, honest examination of our lives and the possibility of real repentance. The Ash Wednesday valentine starts us on the journey to the cross, to the passionate love of God shown in the Passion of Christ. And after the cross, the resurrection. No more pretense, freedom. A monthly message from the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Her address: bishop@elca.org. This column originally appeared in Living Lutheran s February 2018 issue. Reprinted with permission. Faith Action Network led by Lutheran Pastor Paul Benz in partnership with other faith groups in the state invite us to join them for INTERFAITH ADVOCACY DAY on Tuesday, February 20th from 9am-3pm star-ng at the United Churches in Olympia. Worship, Workshops, Lunch and an opportunity to visit your legislators in pre-arranged meetings with others in your legislative district. 11 11 Travelling Luther Each month, we ll have photos (we hope!) of the adventures of the Travelling Luther that each synod conference received at the 2017 Synod Assembly. Some conferences are scheduling him to spend a month at each congregation in their conference. Contact your Pastor for information about having him visit your congregation. Luther travelled across the highway from St. John s Lutheran in Chehalis with Pastor Matt March to Immanuel Lutheran in Centralia with Pastor Linda Nou, shown below top photo Then, he travelled up I-5 from Immanuel in Centralia to Pastor Beth Utto-Galarneau of St. Mark Lutheran in Lacey, shown below.

12 When I was Hungry By Diane Armbrust, Co-Chair of Synod Hunger Committee R.E.A.S.O.N. this acronym succinctly describes the work ELCA Hunger is doing to bring an end to hunger and poverty in the U.S. and abroad. End hunger, you say? Jesus himself says You will always have the hungry with you. At the time he lived, 2000 years ago, that probably was true. But we have halved global hunger since 1990, and could end it altogether by There is more than enough food to feed everyone, but not everyone gets enough food. R.E.A.S.O.N. Here is what the letters stand for: R Relief E Education A Advocacy S Sustainable Development N Networking In 2017 ELCA Lutherans raised over $21 million to address hunger and poverty through these approaches. In mid-january, Beth Ann Johnson of Mountain View Lutheran in Edgewood, and Diane Armbrust of The Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd in Olympia traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend a gathering of synod hunger leaders from across the ELCA. These periodic gatherings equip the hunger leaders of our Church to educate and motivate churches in their synods about the causes and solutions to hunger and poverty. Our focus this year was on A for Advocacy. The topic was the U.S. Farm Bill that comes up for reauthorization this year. There are some important reasons why this topic was chosen. The farm bill is huge. It was projected to cost almost $500 million between 2014 and And it isn t just about helping farmers. In fact, 80% of the funding supports nutrition programs. SNAP (formerly food stamps) accounts for the largest portion of the nutrition title, but it also includes some other important domestic and foreign assistance programs that help hungry people. Budgets are tight, there are many competing interests for available funds, and Congress is in a cutting mood. A couple of years ago, Bread for the World produced a graphic that showed 20 grocery sacks. One was a different color than the others. That one sack represented the 6% of food assistance in the U.S. that comes from the entire charitable sector. The remaining 94% is supplied by government programs, such as SNAP, WIC, School Lunch, Senior meals, etc. Recent visits to nearly every congregation in the synod by the Synod Global Mission Committee revealed that virtually every congregation is involved in feeding people. Most contribute to a food bank or pantry. Many provide hot meals or weekend backpacks for hungry kids. Continued next page

13 Hungry, continued from page 12 Think about what it would mean if there were no public funds and our congregations had to work 17 times as hard trying to see that all are fed! This is where advocacy comes in. As the hunger leaders visited elected leaders in Washington, D.C. we kept hearing the same message. Our senators and congressional representatives need stories. They need to hear from and about people who are affected by these programs, because stories move elected leaders. Think what it would mean if every feeding program in the Southwestern Washington Synod could send a couple of letters to their elected officials telling about how hard they are working to meet needs and whether they are able to meet current needs. What if one or two recipients of each program could tell about the importance of the federal programs and how they have to piece things together to feed their families, despite having one or two workers in the household? The Bible is replete with passages admonishing us to care for and feed the poor. Moses, our faith s greatest advocate spoke truth to power, saying, Let my people go. How about it, will you speak up? Beth Ann Johnson and Diane Armbrust are available to assist your congregation in speaking up for hungry people. They may be contacted through the Synod Office (swwsynod@plu.edu, ) Coffers for Namibia are growing Pastors and church leaders will receive a letter from the Namibia Task Force early this month inviting your congregation to learn about and participate in our synod s ELCA companion relationship with the Lutheran churches in Namibia. The synod Finance Committee has graciously funded the Namibia budget lines in the next budget, and now it is time for congregations to similarly step up to the plate. Our letter will ask for an invitation to your congregation for one of our members to come share about Namibia. We will ask you to fund our Namibian partners at $100 a year. That amount will give us a basis to do real work with the hostiles, a school, a hospital and a rehabilitation center there. Our biggest enemy is indifference. Please invite us. Thank you. 14 14 Deep Roots New Life Did you know that many seminary students today fund their own theological educations? In previous generations, most of tuition was paid by larger church bodies. Today, that is no longer the case, and over 80% of seminary students graduate with over $50,000 in educational debt. One of the goals of the Synod s Deep Roots, New Life campaign is reducing seminary debt for our candidates who have completed the second level ( endorsement ) of candidacy for ordination or consecration in the ELCA. This year we have approximately $20,000 available for these scholarships, thanks to generous donors to this campaign in our synod. Our Candidacy Committee decided that they wanted to give out the available campaign funds for seminary scholarships equally to all candidates that apply following their positive endorsement of candidacy (level 2). The scholarships will not be based on need. This year they also made the scholarships open to all candidates that are still in the candidacy process even if they have already reached their third and final level called approval. Another type of seminary debt relief will be made to clergy serving in our synod who still owe for their seminary education. Our Synod is developing our procedures for how this will work. We do have a great example from the South Dakota Synod and the initiative of Bishop David Zellmer. The South Dakota Synod has had a seminary debt reduction program for about 17 years, a goal we relish. A synod committee receives a simple form from their first-call pastors and deacons. For those who receive a gift, the payment goes directly to their bank or institution holding the debt. The gift is treated as a loan and the pastor or deacon signs paperwork to that effect. When the pastor or deacon has served 5 years in the Synod, the loan is forgiven. If they leave to take a call in another synod before the 5 years is up, they pay the loan back. The South Dakota Synod has worked hard at increasing the money available for their yearly payout. In ten years, the amount has increased from $3000 to $184,000 each year. Our synod goal is to help eliminate seminary debt for our own newer pastors and deacons serving in Southwestern Washington. Imagine what we can accomplish together to serve our pastors and deacons, and thus our congregations. Thank you for your support for our Southwestern Washington Synod s Deep Roots, New Life Campaign.

16 We are all Beloved By Allison Ramsey Dr. Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, Professor of Theological and Social Ethics at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary of California Lutheran University in Berkeley, California was the presenter at the 2018 Bishop s Convocation for rostered leaders that Bishop Jaech convened last month. Bishop Jaech had asked Dr. Moe-Lobeda to speak on how our Lutheran tradition supports our love of God and love of neighbor, including creation. Throughout the three different presentations to the 76 rostered ministers present, Dr. Moe- Lobeda had a common theme of three things to remember: We are all Beloved Children of God. We are all the body of Christ s love here on Earth We are all Broken These three things are what we need to remember and live into with everyone we interact with, especially when working on divisive issues. We need to have courage. I know that I have repeated them to others and to myself on several occasions since hearing them last month. While presenting on caring for our neighbor, she reminded us that it s not Love your neighbor as yourself. Rather it is You WILL love your neighbor as yourself. She asks us to remember that: I am not primarily an I. You are not primarily an I. We are part of a WE. In caring for the earth, Dr. Moe-Lobeda says that we need to look toward ideas like divesting from fossil fuels and supporting legislative advocacy on buying local foods, using public transportation, carbon tax, etc. We can do a rogation service in our congregations that supports the sacredness of farming and use confession and lament in prayer, along with Bible study. Wellness Lesson Learned February 2, 2018 Blog post by Rev. Scott Stoner, Living Compass I have had a severe cold for several weeks, but that is not what has me feeling bad right now. Now that my cold is subsiding, what I feel awful about is the fact that I just learned that I infected several other people with my cold. I was careless about being Continued next page

17 Lesson Learned, continued from page 16 out in public interacting with others, when I clearly should have been home recovering. I greatly minimized how contagious I was because I didn t want to interrupt my regular routines. I don t think I am alone in saying it is a good thing when we are all more conscious about how we affect others, and about what we are spreading when we interact with others. And here I am not just talking about physical colds and viruses, as we can easily spread emotional viruses like fear, anger, anxiety, and stress as well, without being conscious of the fact that we are doing so. When one of my friends told me that they were pretty sure they caught their cold from me, my response was, I am so sorry. That is the last thing I intended to have happen. That was an honest response, and I am very sorry, and of course I never intended to infect others with my cold. But the lesson I have learned from this is that it is simply not enough to say I had no intention of infecting others. The truth is that what I needed to have adopted when I was sick was a conscious intention not to spread my cold to others. If a person chronically dumps their stress (or their cold or flu) on the people around them, it is probably the case that they are not intending to bring the people around them down, but that is still likely what will happen. Only when that person makes the intention to work positively to relieve their stress (or cold) will positive change occur and will others have a better chance of not becoming infected. The important thing to remember is that our moods, like our illnesses, are contagious. Negative mindsets that include sarcasm, cynicism and bad moods are often contagious. The good news is that on the other hand a positive mindset, one that includes joy, peace, humor, love, optimism, and happiness is also contagious. We can as just as easily infect people around us with our positive mindset as we can with our negative mindset. During this flu and cold season, where everyone seems to be spreading something around, I can think of no better way to sum up what I learned than with the words of author Germany Kent. How to change the world: spread positivity bring people up instead of dragging them down treat others the way you wish to be treated
