2014 Annual Convocation September 17, 2014, 11:00 A.M. Metropolitan Baptist Church By the power vested in me as the 11 th President of LeMoyne-Owen College by the Board of Trustees, I now declare the Academic Year at LeMoyne-Owen College officially open. As I outlined my remarks for today s Convocation message, my mind kept reflecting on a preacher who served as pastor of the East Trigg Avenue Baptist Church for 57 years, Dr. William Herbert Brewster. Dr. Brewster was an influential African American Baptist preacher, composer, dramatist, singer and poet. I remember him most for the words in a poem that he wrote that was entitled I m Determined to Be Somebody Someday. Brewster proclaims that. The present conditions and dark circumstances May make it appear that I have not a chance The odds may be against me this fact I admit I haven t much to boast of just a little faith and grit In spite of the things that stand in my way I m determined to be somebody someday In his poem Dr. 1

My head may be bloody and my skin may be black But nothing shall throw me off the track I ll climb the ladder, round by round Until my feet strike higher ground And when I do, just remember what I say I m determined to be somebody someday. Every student in this Convocation wants to be somebody, someday because you have enrolled in the Hollis F. Price Middle College or LeMoyne-Owen College. And as we strive to be somebody someday, we learn in the third chapter of Proverbs, verses 5 and 6 to Trust in the Lord with all your heart And lean not on your own understanding In all your ways acknowledge Him And He shall direct your path. Everybody just shout out Destined for Success. You have just shouted out the subject for my Annual Convocation Speech. If you could live Proverbs 3:5-6 perfectly, then you would never be anxious, you would never lack faith, and you would never fear. How do you trust the Lord with all of our hearts on your journey to success? My answer is by walking in faith to what the Lord has revealed to us. If we truly want to be successful, we cannot lean just on our own understanding, because that s why you have enrolled at LeMoyne-Owen College to also learn from the understandings of the outstanding faculty here. LeMoyne-Owen College welcomes diversity, but as the only historically Black College or University in the region we have to get the message out that we have an important heritage, a full heritage, a rich heritage, a dual heritage, both African and American. On our journey from 2

slavery to freedom, we were subjected to every form of degrading, but we prospered and secured our freedom because we did not let hatred get in our way. Booker T. Washington proclaimed that I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him. Another one of his frequent quotes is I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life but by the obstacles which he has overcome trying to succeed. All of us can relate to obstacles of one kind or another on our road to success. If today we are accepting the charge of being Destined for Success how do we move forward toward excellence? It was probably not phased that way but in the early years of the 20th century, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey developed competing visions for the success of future Americans. Booker T. Washington argued for African Americans to first improve themselves through education, industrial training and business ownership. He believed that equal rights would normally come later. Washington accepted the reality of racial segregation. As a result, white Americans viewed Washington s vision as the key to racial peace in the nation. W.E.B. DuBois agreed that self-improvement was a good idea, but it should not happen at the expense of giving up immediate full citizenship rights. DuBois attacked Washington s acceptance of racial segregation, arguing that this only encouraged whites to deny African Americans the right to vote and to undermine Black pride and progress. Another visionary, Marcus Garvey, believed Black Americans would never be accepted as equals in the United States. He pushed for them to develop their own separate communities or even immigrate back to Africa. 3

Garvey s goal was to create a separate economy and society run by African Americans. Why do I cite these visionaries in a message about Destined for Success? Because college gives you the opportunity to become a visionary and use your imagination on the road to success. Just as slaves used their imagination to seek freedom and self-determination, use your imagination to succeed. One runaway slave named, Rhodie, would run off for long spells. She would steal the hot bread when they would put it in the window to cool. She would evade the hound dogs by putting black pepper in her socks and run without her shoes. This would make the hounds sneeze and lose her trail. Another example of a determined slave was when Dr. Cannon found out that his carriage driver had learned to read and write while he was taking the doctor s children to and from school, he had his thumbs cut off so he couldn t write and put another slave to drive in his place. What Dr. Cannon didn t know is that once you get an education, nobody can take it away. You see that carriage driver was willing to lose his thumbs in order to learn something so that he could be successful through the acquisition of knowledge. What sacrifices are you willing to make in order to be successful? We are Destined for Success thanks to Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne, an ardent abolitionist, whose entire life reflected his conviction of responding and treating justly every human being which was not popular in those days. It became apparent to Dr. LeMoyne that in order to create a descent life for freed slaves they desperately needed an education. After the Civil War, Dr. LeMoyne donated $20,000 to the American Missionary Society for 4

the construction and operation of the Freedman s School in Memphis, Tennessee. That school is currently named LeMoyne-Owen College. To my Hollis F. Price Middle College students, my returning students and members of the Class of 2018, failure will never overtake you if your determination to succeed is strong enough. One determined LeMoyne- Owen College student can make a significant difference, but working as a group, LeMoyne-Owen College students can change the course of history. In our quest for success, don t forget the Biblical reference and proclaim I m going to be successful because I trust in the Lord with all of my heart. I m going to be successful because I lean not on my own understanding. I m going to be successful because in all of my ways I m going to acknowledge Him. I m going to be successful because I m going to let Him direct my path. Dr. Brewster would say if I fail, you tell the world I tried. Let me share with you the secret to success of the Greek philosopher, Socrates. A young man asked Socrates what was his secret to success? Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met. Socrates asked the young man to walk with him toward the river. When the river got up to their necks, Socrates ducked him into the water. The boy struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him there until the boy started turning blue. 5

Socrates pulled his head out of the water and the first thing the young man did was to gasp and take a deep breath of air. Socrates asked, what did you want most when you were there? The boy replied, air. Socrates said, that is the secret to success. When you want success as badly as you want the air, then you will get it. There is no other secret. This lesson that Socrates taught is applicable to every aspect of our lives, that what we get out of life comes down to how much we really want it. Aristotle advised us in The Aristotelian Philosophy on the Good Life that in order to obtain success one must have a goal or objective for their life. I totally agree with Aristotle s philosophy that happiness equals success and success equals blessing. Class of 2018, how much do you really want a college education? How much do you really want to make a difference? How much do you really want to make a good living and be successful? If your answer is I really want to accomplish all of the above questions, then remember the quote from Winston Churchill and never, never, never give up. My motto for all of my adult life is give to the world the best that you have and the best will come back to you. I have had a successful leadership career in the Memphis City Schools, Rhodes College and LeMoyne-Owen College. Allow me to share with you five of the leadership traits that I adopted that made such a career successful: 1. Treated everybody with respect and dignity. 2. Prepared for every task as if it were my senior capstone presentation. 3. Remembered that any employer who has the power to hire also has the power to fire. 6

4. Involved all stakeholders in the decision-making process. 5. Established an open door policy of accessibility. My Challenge to you, future leaders, is to adopt these leadership traits as well as others that you research as you pursue a successful career. For everything under the sun there is a season. My season as the 11 th President of LeMoyne-Owen College has been successful, thanks to the robed professors who are the heartbeat of any institution of higher learning. Thanks to a leadership team who helped me to navigate this ship. Thanks to a support staff dedicated to their individual job assignments. We, not I, we Eliminated the 2006 cumulative deficit of $1.7 Ended each year since 2007 with a balanced budget Earned the highest possible composite credit score of 3.0 Doubled the enrollment Opened a 300 plus bed residence hall Secured accreditation reaffirmation until 2023 None of these would have been possible without you, the students, who had options to attend other schools but chose LeMoyne-Owen College. For that I say, thank you. May I close with a brief testimony about my determination to be successful even though I was born with three strikes against me? The first strike was being born with a condition known as rheumatic fever that kept me from attending school regularly until the fourth grade. The fever would be so great I had to be restrained from climbing out of the upstairs window. But I had praying parents who prayed for my healing and their prayers were answered and I haven t missed a day of school since the fourth grade. But when I outgrew that health impairment I was determined 7

to be somebody someday. Look and me today, the 11 th President of my alma mater. The second strike was being a Black boy growing up in the segregated South in the 1950s, when every day in Memphis had the potential to be a Ferguson, Missouri. Black boys growing up in the segregated South couldn t look in the direction of white women, we better not use a restroom that did not have a colored sign. Enrolling in the state school, Memphis State University was out of the question, matter of fact it was illegal. After enrolling in LeMoyne College in 1956, I knew that I was Destined for Success and refused to let anything or anybody stand in my way. And as a result became Superintendent of the 12 th largest school system in the nation. The third strike against me was being born in poverty, growing up across the street from the College in the LeMoyne-Gardens Housing projects with five sisters and a roll-a-way bed that I would let out in the hallway for my bedroom. I m a living testimony that some good things can come from poor people. That little Black boy who grew up in poverty attended LeMoyne College and became a distinguished professor at Rhodes College. Why don t you just shout out, If Johnnie B. Watson were destined for success, I am too. I am happy about my season presiding as your servant leader. I am truly blessed to have lived more than three score and ten years with a reasonable portion of health and strength. I am exceptionally appreciative of the continuous support that I received from the Board of Trustees and this community. On June 30, 2015, I will enter into a new season called retirement and as Pharrell would sing, happy, happy, happy. Happy because I had the opportunity for nine years to walk the hallowed grounds and hallowed halls 8

to interact with and embrace, my children, the students of LeMoyne-Owen College. Thank you, thank you, thank you all for the opportunity to serve you as the 11 th President of my alma mater, LeMoyne-Owen College. Please remember this Convocation message that you are Destined for Success. Johnnie B. Watson, President, LeMoyne-Owen College, 2014 Convocation Speech 9
