You have given man a crown of glory and honour And have made him a little lower than the angels You have put him in charge of all creation The birds of the air, beasts of the field The fish of the sea But what is man, man that You are mindful of him O Lord our God, the majesty and glory of Your name Transcends the earth and fills the heavens O Lord, our God, little children praise You perfectly And so would we and so would we Alleluia, Alleluia! The majesty and glory of Your name Alleluia, Alleluia! I d Rather Have Jesus Give me Jesus, give me Jesus You can have all this world. Give me Jesus. 9.30am I d rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I d rather be His than have riches untold; I d rather have Jesus than houses or lands. I d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand Than to be the king of a vast domain Or be held in sin s dread sway. I d rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today. He s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom; He s sweeter than honey from out the comb He s all that my hungering spirit needs. I d rather have Jesus and let Him lead Than to be the king of a vast domain Or be held in sin s dread sway. I d rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today. Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace 11.30am Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring Your love. Where there is injury, Your pardon, Lord, And where there s doubt, true faith in You. O Master, grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled as to console To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love, with all my soul. Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there s despair in life, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness only light, And where there s sadness ever joy. Make me a channel of Your peace. In the verse, we sing about God and His provision for us. Then, in the chorus comes a response to those words also prompting the physical act of bowing as we sing about it. The Bible contains many occasions of an individual s response to meeting God. Many times, the response is one of wonder and adoration so overwhelming, so much so that individuals instinctively bow to hide from the purity of God s glory. Such is an act of submission, and should not be confused with the concept of surrender also commonly sung about. The song subtly hints at the difference between submission and surrender with two defining words at the end of each verse wonderful, and beautiful. Many times surrender feels like an ugly picture of giving up, often unwillingly as a last resort at the end of the road, and painful in the process. But bowing in submission is a description of reverent response, and the willing recognition of a power greater than our own striving. When we understand the working of God and the beauty of walking in tandem with Him, we are able to let go and yield to His ways instead of our own. 9 9 Sermon Notes Building Community Through Prayer Rev Stanley Chua Wesley Sanctuary (4 Feb) Scripture Passage: Ephesians 6:10-18 Summary: One of the best ways to build community is to bring our concerns to God through prayer and thereby encouraging, uplifting and bearing each other s burdens to the Lord. One aspect of community prayer that is seldom talked about is in spiritual warfare. In his many years of ministry, Ps Stanley has witnessed demonic attacks but he encountered a personal assault last year. In a hotel in Cameron Highlands, he felt something pressing down on him and had a sinking, cold and very fearful feeling. Through prayer in the spirit, he invoked the name of the Lord Jesus for deliverance. C S Lewis said: There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. There are many in the modern age who fall in the first category of disbelief. The Bible tells us that there are spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Eph 6:12). There is more to life than what we see in the physical world. Our Lord s experience with Satan in the desert after His baptism and His many encounters with demon-possessed people highlighted this. The Lord prayed for our protection against the evil one (Jn 17:15). While this world remains, there will be a tension and conflict between the Kingdom of God and the evil forces. 1 Peter 5:8 states: Your enemy, the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. It would be naïve to think that demonic forces do not exist. How then do we protect ourselves? Firstly, we need to put on the armour of God. Ephesians 6:13-17 summarises what this armour is, including practicing righteousness, standing firm in our faith, sharing the gospel, knowing His Word. Secondly, we are to pray for one another. Prayer is at the heart of spiritual warfare. We commune and build a relationship with God who alone can protect us. Community prayer though we can pray alone, we may not have the strength and ability to pray consistently. We need a fellowship of believers so that we do not face evil attacks alone. Satan tries to divide and conquer the church. In contrast, there is safety in the community of believers as we intercede for each other. Praying always with all kinds of prayer pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. (Eph 6:18a). So pray always, for all things, in all ways. A young family had an encounter with demonic forces and sought the help of Ps Stanley. A dark shadow in a corner had led to great fear in their young son. Pastor went to their home and prayed. He also advised that the couple request prayer support from their Small Group. Being covered by prayer, the evil one s intent was thwarted. Building Community Through Prayer Rev Edmund de Souza Wesley Hall (4 Feb) Scripture Passage: Acts 2:41-43 Summary: As a church, we are one family in Christ and God wants us to bless one another through prayer so we can experience family life, and so that He can respond to our heartfelt needs in a powerful way. Why? Simply because His loves us deeply and wants us to feel His presence in a real way. Prayer in Church In Matthew 21:13, Jesus said: My house will be a house of prayer. Jesus was emphasising that when we come to the house of God, He wants us to not only worship Him in song, but to also seek His face and pour our hearts out to Him in prayer, that we may also experience His grace in our times of need. The Power of Corporate Prayer God wants us to be interested in one another s lives; pray and intercede for one another much like the early church where members devoted themselves to one another in prayer and experienced breakthroughs and God s deliverance in a mighty way. When we pray on our own, God is certainly able to respond and do something supernatural in our lives. But when God s people partner together in prayer, there is a corporate anointing and God acts in a mightier way. He brings healing, breakthrough and pours out His presence on us in a special way when we pray together and for one another (Acts 4:31). Prayer Strengthens Relationships In our Small Groups, we should also learn to open up to one another and pray for one another. When we do this, God strengthens the bond of friendships and community happens. There may be times when we are unable to share certain problems with our own spouse or family, but we can do so comfortably with our brothers or sisters-in-christ. How to Pray for One Another How can we pray for each other? 1. Pray immediately if someone has a need and wants to pray with us or for us, do so immediately. 2. Keep it simple God is not impressed with our vocabulary. He listens to our hearts. 3. Keep it short we do not have to pray for an entire day before God hears us. 4. Take a step of faith if we feel intimidated to pray for someone, get over it! Be bold and just do it! This gives God the opportunity to use us to do something special in somebody else s life. Desley Khew Sermon Notes With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord s people. (Eph 6:1b) Angela Goh

Self-Examination for Building of Authentic Relationships Bible Reading Reflections Alvin Chia (Chairperson, Missions) 11 WEEK Feb 18 READ 2 Corinthians 13 OBSERVE We read in Paul s letter to the church in Corinth of the strife, disagreements, fights and quarrels that are still prevalent and occurring in our communities today. We see Paul agonising over divides and dissensions, accusations (v1) and challenges on authority (v3). Paul reminded us in v10 that the Authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down. APPLY In v5 of the passage, Paul urges everyone to examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. He concluded his letter by exhorting the brothers and sisters to rejoice! and to strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. Need for self-examination in building authentic relationships. Human relationships are complex and at times, agonising and messy. We must recognise that we are all different. The coming together of DO people of diverse personalities, backgrounds and expectations will present challenges that can tear down or build up our relationships and communities. James 4:1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don t they come from your desires that battle within you? In the verse above, we are reminded of the need to consider the interests of others and submit ourselves to God. To examine and be able to manage my expectation and acceptance of others as a first step to building authentic relationships. I cannot change others. I can however change and manage myself, and my reactions, to overcome the challenges. With Christ at the centre of our community, I can strive for full restoration of relationships to forgive, accept one another, be always ready to encourage and help to build up the faith of fellow believers. More importantly, to be of one mind and live in peace as a family of God. What has the Word spoken into my life in this past week? 2. I have applied/will apply the following Word into my daily living. 3. How has God come through for me this past week? 4. One thing that I would do to build community in the coming week. BIBLE READING DRIVE 2018 Next Book The Gospel of Luke during the season of Lent By this Tuesday, 13 Feb, we would have completed the reading of three of Apostle Paul s Epistles. We will take a short break from Paul s Epistles and move to the Gospel of Luke as we observe Lent. Lent is a 40-day season, not counting Sundays, that starts from Ash Wednesday (which falls on 14 Feb this year) and ends on Holy Saturday (31 March 2018). It is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter (1 April 2018) by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. As a Community of Christ, let s read and reflect on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as recorded for us in the Gospel of Luke. BRD2018 Webpage brd@wesleymc.org

Ash Wednesday Service Wed 14 Feb 8.00pm Wesley Sanctuary for dust you are and to dust you will return. Genesis 3:19 (NIV) KEY DATES: 5 Lent: 14 Feb (Ash Wednesday) to 31 Mar (Holy Saturday) Good Friday: 30 Mar Holy Week Services: 25 Mar (Palm Sunday) to 1 Apr (Easter) Easter: 1 Apr things you need to know about Ash Wednesday 1. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day season, not counting Sundays. It may fall anytime from 3 February to 10 March. This year, it falls on 14 February. Wesley Methodist Church will hold its Ash Wednesday Service at the Sanctuary on Wednesday, 14 February, at 8.00pm. Come and join us. 2. Worship for the day focuses on the themes of sin and death in the light of God s redeeming love in Jesus Christ. Traditional words in the service are Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. We receive everlasting life only as a gift of God s grace. 3. We observe Lent as a time of repentance, prayer, and self-denial; of meditation on Jesus life and death; and of self-giving to others, especially to those who are suffering or are in need. Giving things up for Lent is a tradition that probably grew out of Lenten penance for sin and fasting, so as to be one with Jesus in suffering. 4. The Scripture refers to ashes as a sign of mortality as well as a sign of repentance. In many churches, palms are used on Palm Sunday. The palms are then burned and mixed with a little water to make ashes. During the service, the pastor will use the ashes to make a cross on the forehead of each worshipper. 5. Grey or other dark earth tones are especially appropriate colours for Ash Wednesday, as are rough textured cloths such as burlap to suggest sack clothes and ashes. Our church uses the colour purple, which is also the Lenten colour. 13 Ash Wednesday

19 WEEK 5 Building Community Through Mutual Submission Authentic Relationships book, chapter Feb, Feb Building CommUNITY Objective of the session To explore and encourage the maturation of our community/relationships through mutual confession and submitting to one another. Introduction 1. Share either (i) your personal takeaways from the book chapters allocated for this week, or (ii) your new experiences from applying what you committed to do after last week s session. 2. Can you recall an occasion when you did something wrong, but didn t have the courage to tell anyone? 3. Do you feel you can share anything with anyone in your existing group or relationships? If not, why is it so difficult to share?

20 Building CommUNITY Introduction to the theme: Our churches are filled with people who outwardly look contented and at peace, but inwardly are crying out for someone to love them just as they are confused, frustrated, frightened, guilty, and often unable to communicate with their own families. But other people in the church look so happy and contented that one seldom has the courage to admit his own deep needs before such a self-sufficient group as the average church meeting appears to be. Keith Miller The reason I saved confession and submission as the last two one anothering Scriptures is because they grow in expression as relationship mature. We don t open up the darkest places in our lives and submit our choices to strangers or new acquaintances; this happens naturally as friendships deepen. Being honest with people isn t easy, because most of us have been abused or manipulated by others precisely at our weakest points. We do not need to be open with others just because they call themselves believers, but we can allow relationships to grow so that people can appropriately handle the depth of our sharing. (Authentic Relationships, p123, ) 4. As you look around you or in your life, is there someone you feel safe enough to let down your guard and share vulnerably about your fears, struggles and failures? What is it about them that makes you feel safe? Exploring the Theme: The freedom to confess our sins, expose our doubts and let people see into our struggles accomplishes 3 things 1) it allows others to know us as we really are, which helps cultivates relationships. 2) it allows us to seek forgiveness from the people our failures and weaknesses have wronged and to seek reconciliation intentionally. 3) it allows God s light to shine on our brokenness and others to come to our aid, which greatly enhances the healing process. (Authentic Relationships, p125) 5. Read James 5:16. What does the Bible say about confessing and submitting to one another? 6. Read Galatians 1:10. How does the thirst for other people s approval diminish who Jesus wants us to be?

21 Applying the Theme 7. Share about a time when someone s insight changed the course of your life. 8. Share how we may free one another to live out an authentic life, and to encourage a confessional climate in our community? Building CommUNITY 9. Share with the group the following 2 Class Meeting questions: a. How is my relationship with God? b. How are things with me? WHAT S NEXT FOR THIS GROUP? Congratulations! You have reached the end of this campaign. But this is just the beginning of experiencing the joy of growing together in Christ, through the authentic relationships in your group. Having experienced life together as a group for the past 5 weeks, you might want to consider how you may continue building community together. Here are some ideas: i. Commit to meeting regularly as a small group and praying for one another regularly. ii. Commit to participate in an upcoming church activity together, ie do D.I.G. (Devotion in Groups) in preparation for Easter, and/or attend the Holy Week Services. iii. Commit to bringing others into the community of the small group.

22 Building CommUNITY Ground Rules for Class Meeting (Offering a safe space for one another) Adapted by Alvin Tay and Rev Gladwin Lee from COMPANIONS IN CHRIST (A Small Group Experience in Spiritual Formation), Leader s Guide, 2006, Tennessee, Upper Room Books. Introductory notes: The early Methodists, under the leadership of our founder John Wesley would meet regularly in small groups which they termed class meeting. The practice of the class meeting is a crucial tool for enabling Methodists to watch over one another in love, to support and encourage one another in their lives with God, so as to keep the three General Rules: (i) do no harm, (ii) do good, and (iii) to attend upon the ordinances of God (referring to basic Christian practices or disciplines). APPENDIX 3. Share as you are comfortable We want to offer a culture of honour by recognising that all group members have permission to share only when they are ready to share, and whatever they are comfortable with. 4. Respect and Receive Respect and receive what others offer, even if you disagree. And when you disagree with another person, continue to be respectful and sensitive to them. In Wesley Methodist Church, we endeavour to grow in this same spirit of watching over each other in love, by encouraging Wesleyans to set aside time regularly in our meetings to share our lives by asking two questions: a. How is my relationship with God? b. How are things with me? The act of asking these questions on a regular basis causes us to pay more attention to our spiritual formation. During this spiritual exercise, the shape of our Wesleyans sharing could include our inner thoughts, personal concerns, and even private challenges. Hence we need to create a safe space for Wesleyans to share freely and assure them that what is shared within the group, stays within the group. Establishing upfront some ground rules for group sharing will help us to avoid problems that could destroy group trust. At the same time, it will cultivate a positive listening environment for each other. Therefore, for the sole purpose of cultivating healthy interactions among members during group devotion, we encourage everyone to observe the following basic ground rules: A. When you are speaking: 1. Take turns to share Participants will take turns to share - in no particular order but as the Holy Spirit leads. Be succinct so that everyone will have an opportunity to share within the agreed time allocated in each session. 2. Speak only for yourself Be specific about your experience. Speak from your own experiences instead of generalising or speaking for others. To do so, we encourage you to use singular first person pronouns such as: "I", "me" and "my", instead of "we", "you", "they". B. When someone is speaking: 1. Maintain Confidentiality What is shared within the group, stays within the group. Please maintain confidentiality so as to preserve trust within the group. 2. Do not cross talk Cross talk refers to any type of dialogue that sidetracks the person sharing and prevents him/her from completing his/her main train of thought. Typically crosstalk happens when we speak out of turn, interrupt while someone is sharing or give unsolicited advice to fix another person s problems. 3. Honour Others Do not debate on ideas, or try to convince others to follow the particular path of understanding or practice that God has led you on. Honour the different ways God works in each individual. 4. Listen deeply Remain silent when someone is sharing. In addition to observing points 2 and 3 to remove obstructions in the sharing, we offer our sacred presence by learning to listen deeply. This sacred act of listening deeply is offered by listening with our heart, and what God is saying to us through the sharing of others. 5. Learn to Pause Each time someone has finished sharing, intentionally pause for a moment to allow everyone to feel the weight of what was just shared and to fully consider it before the next person speaks. 6. Do not be afraid of silence There will be silence in the first few attempts of this spiritual exercise. Some may feel uncomfortable. But do not be pressured to end this segment prematurely. Use the silence instead to listen to the Holy Spirit in your midst.
