Welcome, Worship Orientation 101, You Are Here Clipboards No Longer Strangers Prayer God of the stranger, Help us to see you outside of worship, outside of Sunday, and outside of ourselves. You reach out to us in the most unlikely ways. Help us to always seek you in new people and new experiences. Amen. Meet Someone New We practice being Christians by extending our hand in friendship to people we may not know very well or at all. If we can t do it here, in worship, where else can we do it? Go ahead, make the first move. Hi, my name is. You re new to me. Today, in honor of All Saints Day and Confirmation Sunday, share with someone you meet an important person in your life that has shaped who you are. Write it down on the wrist band you were given as you came into worship today. Reprise of 2nd gathering song to gather everyone back together. Greetings of grace through God, Jesus Christ, & the Holy Spirit The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the community of the Holy Spirit is with you all. And also with you. 6 Pastor Laura: Our story and God s story continues today in 2 Kings 5:1-14 Fletcher: Naaman was general of the army under the king of Aram. He was important to his master, who held him in the highest esteem because it was by him that God had given victory to Aram: a truly great man, but afflicted with a grievous skin disease. It so happened that Aram, on one of its raiding expeditions against Israel, captured a young girl who became a maid to Naaman s wife. Bradee: One day she said to her mistress, Oh, if only my master could meet the prophet of Samaria, he would be healed of his skin disease. Naaman went straight to his master and reported what the girl from Israel had said. Max: Well then, go, said the king of Aram. And I ll send a letter of introduction to the king of Israel. So he went off, taking with him about 750 pounds of silver, 150 pounds of gold, and ten sets of clothes. Naaman delivered the letter to the king of Israel. The letter read, When you get this letter, you ll know that I ve personally sent my servant Naaman to you; heal him of his skin disease. Loraina: When the king of Israel read the letter, he was terribly upset, ripping his robe to pieces. He said, Am I a god with the power to bring death or life that I get orders to heal this man from his disease? What s going on here? That king s trying to pick a fight, that s what! Isaiah: Elisha the man of God heard what had happened, that the king of Israel was so distressed that he d ripped his robe to shreds. He sent word to the king, Why are you so upset, ripping your robe like this? Send him to me so he ll learn that there s a prophet in Israel. So Naaman with his horses and chariots arrived in style and stopped at Elisha s door. Elisha sent out a servant to meet him with this message: ALL: Go to the River Jordan and immerse yourself seven times. Your skin will be healed and you ll be as good as new. Fletcher: Naaman lost his temper. He turned on his heel saying, I thought he d personally come out and meet me, call on the name of God, wave his hand over the diseased spot, and get rid of the disease. The Damascus rivers, Abana and Pharpar, are cleaner by far than any of the rivers in Israel. Why not bathe in them? I d at least get clean. Bradee: He stomped off, mad as a hornet. But his servants caught up with him and said, Father, if the prophet had asked you to do something hard and heroic, wouldn t you have done it? So why not this simple wash and be clean? ALL: So he did it. He went down and immersed himself in the Jordan seven times, following the orders of the Holy Man. His skin was healed; it was like the skin of a little baby. He was as good as new. Pastor Laura : Tune in next week for the continuing saga that is our story and God s story. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon Hymn/Song of the Day You Are Mine on page 7. 6

Invitation to and Thanksgiving for Baptism Kids are invited forward to pour the water into the fount and bless it. Each and every week, we ask for forgiveness through Jesus Christ. It is through the waters of baptism that this forgiveness washes over us again and again. If you are not baptized, I believe this water has promise for you still. But I do invite you to these life-giving waters. If you ve not been baptized, this community would like nothing more than to surround you and support you in this new life in Christ. Today, growing young adults will affirm their baptism. They say a resounding yes to a life of faith in Jesus Christ. They say yes to this water and the word that was poured over them. And so, as we gather to confess our sin and hear words of forgiveness, we give thanks for this water. Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty, you are the river of life, you are the everlasting wellspring, you are the fire of rebirth. Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams. Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us, around us, above us: our life is born in you. You are the fountain of resurrection. Praise to you for your saving waters: Noah and the animals survive the flood, Hagar discovers your well. The Israelites escape through the sea, and they drink from your gushing rock. Naaman washes his leprosy away, Jesus was born of a watery womb, and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again. At this font, holy God, we pray: Praise to you for the water of baptism and for your Word that saves us in this water. Breathe your Spirit into all who are gathered here and into all creation. Illumine our days. Enliven our bones. Dry our tears. Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us. Satisfy all our thirst with your living water, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Confession and Forgiveness In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess that God is God and we are not. Silence for reflection Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin 8

and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Fear not sisters and brothers. God, who is full of grace and abounding in steadfast love, meets us in our sin and transforms us for God s glory and the healing of God s world. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, your sins are forgiven. Be now at peace. And we say, thanks be to God. Thanks be to God! Amen! Affirmation of Baptism Confirmation kids and their mentor and parents stand around the fount. PRESENTATION Dear friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism as we come before God to make public affirmation of baptism into Christ. Parents and/or mentors and/or baptismal sponsors present each person to affirm their baptism, one at a time. I/We present, who desires to make public affirmation of her/his baptism. Let us pray. Merciful God, we thank you for these sisters and brothers, whom you have made your own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in the community of faith. Uphold your servants in the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth. We ask this in the name of Christ. Amen. PROFESSION OF FAITH I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? I renounce them. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 9

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Or, "he descended into hell," another translation of this text in widespread use. AFFIRMATION IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ASSEMBLY You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Confirmands: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their lives in Christ? Congregation: We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Pastor Laura places her hand on each confirmand s head in turn while family are invited to lay hands on shoulders and back. Let us pray, We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. Stir up in the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. 10

Amen. After Pastor Laura and parents/sponsors/etc have blessed their young adult, the young adult will then place their fingers in the baptismal fount and mark the sign of the cross on their parent(s) and sponsor s foreheads, blessing them with these words: Remember, you are a child of God, loved beyond measure. Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. Song/Hymn Let The River Flow on pages While the congregation sings the following hymn or song, the newly confirmed will remind the congregation of their baptism through sprinkling them with water. 11

Prayers for All People - It is our duty and our joy to pray not only for our own lives and for the church but for the world, especially those in need. Each petition will end with, Hear us Oh God and your prayer response is Your mercy is great. Pastor Laura: Seeing how God loves us, let us pray not only for our own needs but for all who are in need. Loraina: God of love, for all people yearning for your love, wash them in the waters of baptism, surprise them with your grace, and tell them they are loved by you. 13

Hear us Oh God, Your mercy is great Max: Creator God, you love the world that you made. Help us to take care of this earth and this precious life you have gifted to us. Hear us Oh God, Your mercy is great Bradee: Healing God, bring your healing to all in need. For healing of families and relationships, for the healing of minds and spirits, and for the healing of bodies. We especially pray for Jean, Kelly and David and all those we name silently or aloud. (count to 5) Hear us Oh God, Your mercy is great Isaiah: God of peace and comfort, comfort all who mourn, especially Jeanette Lindberg and Jeanine Borgendale as they mourn the death of their brother, Dennis. For Tara and Chad as they mourn the death of their son, Hunter. And for Chris, Sara, Ellie and Isaac as they both mourn and hope for new life. Hear us Oh God, Your mercy is great Fletcher: God of life, we pray for each of us affirming our faith today. Continue to be with us throughout all our lives. Give us hope when we feel hopeless; courage when we are afraid. Most of all stir up our faith so that it continues to grow and change just as we will. We lift these prayers to you, trusting in your mercy through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Offering All that we have and all that we are comes from God. Let us give back to God in a spirit of generosity. There will be enough. Please put your offering of gratitude to God in the plate as it passes by. Offering Song - Seek Ye First on page

Setting the Table Confirmation kids will help set and serve today! As the kids help set the table, they circle around the table and lead the congregation in the table prayer written by Martin Luther: Let s pray: Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest. And let these gifts to us be blest. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 16

Words to bless the meal O God of resurrection and new life: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and wine. Bless this feast. Grace our table with your presence. Amen. The Lord s Prayer You are invited to join hands with those around you in prayer. If you are not the hand-holding type, then simply fold your hands in front of you or hang onto this bulletin as you pray. Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Invitation to The Meal You are welcome to this meal. If you hunger and thirst for grace and mercy that comes through Jesus Christ, then Christ has set this table just for you. Bring all that you are and all that you have to the table. You will be fed. You will be forgiven. There will be enough. During communion today, you are invited to tables located around the worship area to light candles of loved ones who have died, either recently or long ago, knowing they shaped your life in important ways. Communion Songs/Hymns You Are Holy (Prince of Peace) pages and Here I Am To Worship on pages Communion Servers: Jack & Isabelle Erika & Loraina Bradee & Ryan Mikenna & Fletcher Max & Isaiah Bread servers: The body of Christ given for you. We go out to transform lives through Jesus Christ. Blessing to GO We go with God s blessing into a world that is often chaotic and not peaceful or welcoming of God. We go into the chaos to bless others in God s name. + You are a blessed child of God! Now Go! And bless others in God s name Sending Song Days of Elijah pages
