What Is a Discipleship Training Center? A Discipleship Training Center is a learning center in a local church, school, prison, or outreach ministry that is in partnership with Global University ICI. This partnership involves the use of Global University ICI materials and study programs developed by the Center for Evangelism and Discipleship (CED). CED programs are dynamic, internationally proven, and life changing. CED materials are used worldwide in 178 countries, in 149 languages, with over 615,000 active students today. Many courses are available in multiple languages in digital, audio, and video formats. Discipleship Training Centers assume certain responsibilities of administering the courses enabling Global University to reduce the cost of materials. These non-degree CED courses are produced under the categories of: Evangelism Children s Bible Curriculum Christian Life (CL) Christian Service (CS) Evangelism Courses CED Evangelism Courses have been used to tell more than 44 million people about Christ. Each year thousands of people from around the world report to Global University ICI that they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior through the study of these materials. The Great Questions of Life course has touched lives in over 179 countries of the world. Many of these courses have video supplements that add interest and motivation for study. Children s Bible Curriculum Children s Bible Curriculum shares the fundamentals of faith from a Spirit-filled perspective. Children at every age level have the opportunity to hear the Gospel message and grow in their faith. Choose Children s Bible Curriculum for Sunday school, children s church, Christian schools, homeschoolers, anywhere you want children in your church to build a foundation in their faith. 5

Christian Life Series The Christian Life Program comprises 18 courses that are designed to draw each believer into a closer relationship with God. The series is conversational in style and is best suited for short-term study or the discipleship of new believers. Christian Service Series Christian Service courses offer a more in-depth approach to Bible study. This series is well suited for lay leadership training. The study gives attention to the role of Christian service in the believer s growth. Each book is 8-10 chapters in length and typically takes thirteen weeks to complete when studied in a class that meets once per week. THE TEACHER IS IN THE BOOK! Both Christian Life and Christian Service courses are uniquely designed for independent or self-study. Mastery learning is possible because each lesson contains self-examination reviews (tests) that allow students to learn at their own pace and level. The courses may also be taught in-group. The teacher in the book concept reduces the need for highly experienced instructors. Even beginning teachers will enjoy using these materials. Instructor s guides are available in English. Audio and video aids are also available in several languages. 6

The CED Systematic Study Plan The Systematic Study Plan is a comprehensive approach to Bible study on the certificate level. Students will study multiple Christian topics under six reoccurring themes. Overall objectives include: Help students become more like Christ. Lead students to constantly interact with the Word of God. Give attention to the role of Christian service in the believer s growth. Provide practical lessons and monitor daily progress. The Systematic Study Plan can be used for both the Christian Life and Christian Service courses. Certificates are awarded for the completion of each of the three units of study. Individual certificates may also be awarded for the completion of each course within a unit of study. The following charts illustrate how the units of study are organized for the Christian Life and Christian Service series. 8 How Discipleship Training Centers Use CED Materials CED materials can be used in a variety of ways by local Discipleship Training Centers. Some of the options are: Classroom Study This study method works well with all of the CED courses. Students benefit from classroom interaction and valuable teacher insight and assistance. Classes can be set up for: New converts Church membership Midweek or Sunday electives Lay leadership training for deacons, teachers, and other ministries Youth groups Men s or women s Bible studies Christian schools Community outreach training Home Bible or Cell Group Study Some people may feel more comfortable meeting in a home for Bible study, rather than in a church building. Home Bible studies can be a great place for introducing new people to Christ and Christian values. People will grow from the regular study and caring fellowship. As a pastor or leader in your church, you can be assured that CED courses will always promote teaching that is doctrinally sound and based upon the Word of God. Independent Study With today s fast paced lifestyles, people are often not able to attend weekly Bible study sessions with regularity. Since CED courses are designed for self-study, they readily adapt to the schedules of today s busy parent, businessperson, or leader. Outreach, Correspondence, and Distance Study Many Discipleship Training Centers use CED materials for outreach to those who are unable to attend church worship services. When individuals return the exams, the Discipleship Training Center has an ideal opportunity to minister to the student. 8

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE: Prisons Nursing homes Veteran s hospitals International / ethnic group outreach Campus or university Bible studies Religion classes in public or private schools New Christian Service Diploma Program A Christian Service (CS) Diploma may now be earned through Global University s Berean School of the Bible. Students must complete all 18 Christian Service courses and the special BSB comprehensive final exam for each course. These exams are in addition to the normal unit tests for each course. A student may also be allowed to transfer up to 18 credits of Christian Service courses as elective credit, for which the student has earned a minimum grade of 80%, into an undergraduate program with Global University. 1. Students register with Enrollment Services using the BSB application/order form. There is a $10.00 Institute Application Fee with the student s initial order. 2. The current tuition fee is $35.00 for each CS course. This includes the cost of the final exam. The cost of the Study Guide is additional. 3. There is also a diploma fee of $10.00 when the student finishes a program of study. 4. If a student has already taken the course and now wants to receive credit, he/she will need to pay the current tuition fee and will be sent the final exam. 5. Students may order the courses and exams either by calling and pressing 4 for Enrollment Services. They may also mail in the order form or fax it to The student s initial order must be paid for up front. We can bill up to $ on any order after that. Payment is due 30 days from the date of the invoice. 6. There is a $20.00 retake fee if a student fails the final exam and wants to retake it for a passing grade. A passing grade on the BSB level is 70%, but 80% is needed to be eligible for transfer credit into the undergraduate program. If a student fails the exam 2 times, then he/she must wait 3 months and re-enroll in the course by paying tuition again. 9

Getting Started P R AY E R No ministry or program of your church will succeed without prayer support. Here are some important things to keep in mind when praying for your Discipleship Training Center. Pray for: 1. New converts who take discipleship courses to understand their relationship with Jesus and gain knowledge of Bible truths. 2. Workers to complete their studies as a means of preparing for ministries in the local church. 3. People to have their needs met through the study of CED courses. 4. Christian truth to increase the confidence of people for witnessing. 5. God to give ministry opportunities to help people who cannot attend the local church to study and grow spiritually. Each leader should be asked to recruit a personal prayer partner who is not involved in Discipleship Training Center leadership. This will help to communicate the needs of the learning center and provide a support system in times of need. P R O M O T I O N The effective promotion of your Discipleship Training Center is essential to the overall success of this ministry. There are numerous ways to promote a Discipleship Training Center to the church and community. The possibilities are limited only by one s imagination. Although situations may vary, here are several methods that have been used successfully: Banquet Host a meal or luncheon at your church. After the meal, introduce the Discipleship Training Center concept to those present and answer any questions they may have. Students may be enrolled at that time. Church Bulletin Insert Attractive announcements can be placed in the church bulletin. This provides the opportunity for many to hear the information at the same time. It is helpful if the pastor reinforces the bulletin insert with a pulpit announcement as well. 10

Skit or Drama Use a topic or idea that relates positively to the life of a student before and after taking a CED course. Humor is also helpful in getting people s attention. Use your imagination and try to keep the drama brief and interesting. Personal Invitation Many people respond best to a personal invitation from the pastor, Discipleship Training Center director, teacher, or student. The invitation can be oral or written and should include information on how to enroll in the class. Direct Mail A letter from the pastor with a return postcard enclosed can be used to reach out to the church and community. The letter should include the subjects that will be taught by the Discipleship Training Center in the near future. Also include a student enrollment card that can be mailed in. Include a telephone number for prospective students to call if they desire more information. Testimonials Encourage people to share a testimony of their positive experiences while taking CED courses. This can be done through pulpit announcements, cassette tapes, videos, slide shows, printed pieces, etc. Testimonies provide strong motivation for people to get involved. Telephone Blitz An organized campaign to call everyone in your church will help spread enthusiasm and awareness of the benefits of taking courses through your Discipleship Training Center. The same can be done for groups outside the church. 11

COMMUNICATION CHECKLIST 1. Have leaders and teachers received proper orientation? Have they had an opportunity to look over the ministry descriptions found in this manual? 2. Has the availability of courses been adequately communicated in time for people to fit the classes into their schedules? 3. Are students aware that they can study courses at home if they are unable to attend classes? 4. Have the pastor and Discipleship Training Center leadership communicated how the Discipleship Training Center fits into the overall plan of the church? 5. Is the church board aware of the many things that are taking place in the Discipleship Training Center? Do board members receive quarterly progress updates so they might be supportive of the center? R E C R U I T I N G I D E A S Operating a Discipleship Training Center will help people in your church mature in their faith and grow more confident in telling others about Christ. Centers also create many areas of service for the local church. Proper leadership is essential. In many churches across the United States, as few as 25% of the new believers are ever baptized in water. Many new converts also return to their old lifestyle due to a lack of discipleship. The Discipleship Training Center can help change that trend as well as equip people for personal evangelism ministry. The following information offers suggestions and brief descriptions of the kind of leadership needed to successfully operate your Discipleship Training Center. You may need to adapt the suggestions to fit your particular situation. 1. Begin by praying and asking others to pray that the Lord of the Harvest will send forth laborers into this ministry. 2. Let people know what their responsibilities are from the beginning. The ministry descriptions enclosed in this manual will help. 3. Be personal in your recruiting. Avoid hallway conversations and pulpit announcements if possible. People will take the ministry position more seriously if they have been personally recruited. 4. People are usually willing to serve for one year at a time if asked. Doing this will 12

require less effort in the long run than asking a new person to teach or serve for a shorter period of time. If you do not know how well a person teaches, it may be best to have the person substitute for a period of time before seeking a one-year commitment. 5. Provide the information necessary for people to become successful in the ministry. Besides this manual, see our Teacher s Handbook and available courses on instruction for further helps and resources. 6. Express the importance of the need and the commitment that your church has toward evangelism and discipleship. What to look for in leadership 1. Spiritual maturity. 2. Skills for the position. Does the person you are recruiting have the vision and/or administrative skills the position requires? Is the person more people oriented or task oriented? (Both can be used in a Discipleship Training Center.) Does he/she prefer to work independently or in-group with other people? 3. The consent of his/her family. Is the person s family supportive of what he/she will be doing? In some cases it may be possible to recruit the entire family to work with the Discipleship Training Center. 4. Does the person have the time or will he/she make the time to fulfill the requirements of the ministry? 13

Director s Orientation and Installation A proper orientation for directors, teachers, and facilitators will help ensure the success of the Discipleship Training Center. Once these workers are prayerfully chosen they will need training in order to understand the general Discipleship Training Center operations and policies required by the Center for Evangelism and Discipleship. Orientation The following guidelines are suggested: 1. Involve the principle pastor in the initial recruitment and set up processes. 2. Set apart a regular weekly time to meet with those who will be your directors, future teachers, or group facilitators. The training time should take at least 12 hours divided into time increments as deemed necessary. These times together may continue after the initial training for follow-up and creative team problem solving. People will enjoy this part of the discipling process and feel part of the leadership. 3. The training should include the following priorities: An understanding of the principles outlined in this Discipleship Training Center Director s Handbook. An understanding of the importance and function of the 4-step reporting procedure contained in this Discipleship Training Center Director s handbook. We strongly recommend that participating workers take Christian Maturity, the first course in the Christian Service series, in order to understand the course s instructional design and grading procedures. 16

Installation Service Once the director orientation for operations is completed, you will be ready to launch your Discipleship Training Center. A special installation service on a Sunday morning may be planned. A formal Discipleship Training Center installation service should include: 1. An appropriate message on a theme concerning discipleship, growing in Christ, or training for Christian service. 2. A presentation of the programs and resources available through the Center for Evangelism and Discipleship. 3. The presentation and awarding of official Discipleship Training Center certificates including: Discipleship Training Center Church Recognition Certificate (Global University Official Agreement); Discipleship Training Center Director s Training Achievement Certificates; and Christian Maturity certificates for successful course completion. 4. Prayer of dedication for directors and laying on of hands for those participating in ministry operations. 5. Announcement for classes, times, and registration at the conclusion of the service. 17

Motivation and Recognition of Achievement It is extremely important to make sure each Discipleship Training Center gets off to a good start. It is equally important to ensure that people continue to stay motivated and involved. Public or private recognition of achievement is usually not the primary reason people study CED courses. People do, however, appreciate kind words and tokens of appreciation when they have worked hard to achieve a goal. Some ideas for recognizing people s achievements are: Awarding certificates in a church service A personal note of appreciation A personal telephone call Faxes or Discipleship Training Center teacher of the year award Appreciation banquets Kind words as you meet a student Posting the names of certificate recipients Discipleship Training Center Finances A simple income and expense budget includes: 1. Funding for your Center can come from: Book Sales or Course Registration Fees Offerings Church Budget Special Fund-raisers 2. EXPENSES: Study Guides, Answer Keys, Instructional Aids Certificates Operational Expenses Scholarships for Needy Students 18
