March 2017 Face-to-Face Newsletter of Catholic Charismatic Renewal Vol years of Grace Archbishop celebrates opening Mass for the Golden Jubilee year for CCR Brisbane On 11 th march 2017, Archbishop Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane, celebrated Mass at St. John s Northgate to mark the Golden Jubilee of CCR and open the CCR Brisbane ministry year. The Archbishop spoke beautifully about the influence of the Holy Spirit on the Church through Catholic Charismatic Renewal. The Archbishop s homily follows: Now, brothers and sisters, fifty years ago just after the Second Vatican Council, which was an earthquake of one kind in the Roman Catholic Church, so just after the earthquake of the Second Vatican Council, something scarcely less extraordinary happened in the good old Roman Catholic Church and that was the eruption of what we came to call the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Who would have thought of that? Well, God did. At first it seemed decidedly suspicious. It didn t seem Catholic at all. It seemed like the sort of thing those Protestants would do. And in fact it had passed into the Catholic Church by and large from Protestant circles. Again the imagination and even the wit of God; it was treated with suspicion, caution, ridicule and many of you who have journeyed with CCR for that long will remember what I say..it seemed to be at best marginal to the life of the Church, the happy clappers, the jumping for Jesus and all of those dismissive and rather patronising and even scornful descriptions of what God was doing in the church. Fascinatingly in the last 50 years, in the meantime, charismatic spirituality shall we call it, has infiltrated the church everywhere and this is what God intended surely. It is hard to think of one of the really powerful and creative newer impulses or communities in the Church that has not in some ways been touched by 1 Charismatic Renewal. Most of the newer communities certainly are charismatic in their spirituality and the fact that we have come to see more clearly perhaps, is that the charismatic experience has always been part of Christianity. It didn t just appear 50 years ago. You only have to read the New Testament to see what I mean. St. Paul s letters make it abundantly clear. So the charismatic impulse, or dare I suggest the charisms, the work of the Holy Spirit that becomes the charisms, have always been there. Sometimes they go underground and then sometimes, unpredictably, they bubble up to the surface as they did again 50 years ago and in one sense it is nothing new and even the term Charismatic Renewal, I sometimes think should be pensioned off. We are simply talking about Christianity and to give it a separate name runs the risk of isolating it, making it seem marginal and exotic when in fact it is not. We are talking about Christianity and of course there are many, many ways of being Christian. This is again in the vast imagination and creativity of God. There are so many ways of approaching Jesus Christ but one of the most persistent and powerful is what we call the charismatic impulse. So through these 50 years the charisms, God s gifts, have infiltrated into the Church at every point, at every level and that is what God intended. There are many ways of approaching Jesus Christ but one of the most persistent and powerful is what we call the charismatic impulse. Now the gifts are boundless and we call them charisms because they are the work of grace, the free gift of love. They are genuine gifts, they don t cost you. The Church might pass the hat around, but God does not. Now God gives gifts, these gifts we call the charisms, to particular people not just for their own sake but because God wants to do something in the world, not only just in the Church. God is interested in the Church certainly, but ultimately he is interested in the world. God so loved the

world (John 3/16). So the charisms are all about God s love for the world and if we think of the great religious founders, Francis of Assisi comes to mind - an extraordinary charismatic but not just for his own sake or the sake of the Franciscan Order or the Roman Catholic Church but for the sake of the whole world; and I could go through every one of the founders and it is the same with you though you have received gifts and they are mightily enriching in your own life, obviously, but it is just not about you, it is about the Church, renewing the Church. God knows, we need to do that. That is unfinished business, but it is also about the world, which is why we say the Church does not have a mission, the Church is a mission. It is about God s love for the world. us to understand that we are on a journey into the fullness of maturity, the fullness of being human which in the end will mean that we become divine. The divinisation of us will be the attainment of our full humanity and the sign that we have reached that point of completion. Full maturity, the maturity of Christ himself, is if we can love our enemy and pray for those who persecute us. Now some of the charisms are, shall we say, spectacular and they run the risk of being even a bit showy. St Paul s worried about that and St Paul in his unforgettable passage at the end of 1 Corinthians says, Look if I have all the gifts, all the eloquence of men and of angels but I am without self-sacrificing love, I am simply a gong booming and a cymbal clashing. (1 Cor 13/1-13). God s not into booming gongs and clashing cymbals - that s why we need at the end of this journey of 50 years, which is the beginning of another journey, to focus on what is the charism of all charisms and it is self-sacrificing love. Greek has three words for love, Eros, which love is under its aspect of desire; Filia which is love under its aspect of friendship; and Agape which is love under its aspect of self-sacrifice and the word that Paul uses when he dictates that famous passage is the third word, Agape, self- sacrificing love supremely found in the crucified Christ. And what is the ultimate test of our maturity in selfsacrificing love? We heard it from Christ this morning: Love your enemy. You ve heard it said you must love your neighbour and hate your enemy. (Matt. 5/43-38) That s easy. That s kind of logical. What is seriously difficult is to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you and yet there in all its awesome concreteness is the ultimate criterion of yours and my maturity in self-sacrificing love. And when Jesus says, You must be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect, (Matt 5/48) He is not encouraging us to take on board the kind of perfectionism that is self-defeating but he is calling 2 His Grace, Archbishop Mark Coleridge and President of CCR Brisbane, Len Airey cutting the Jubilee Cake Address by the CCR Brisbane President delivered at CCR Celebrations at the end of 2016 EXPAND YOUR TENTS At the CCR National Conference held in July this year, one of the keynote speakers, Dr. Mary Healy said, I have a message for you: Enlarge the site of your tent and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; don t hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left and your descendants will possess the nations and will settle the desolate towns. (Is 54/2-3) At the AGM last year, I shared a vision with the CCR Brisbane community. The vision was of the large gates to the City of God and they were wide open. I said to the Lord, Where is CCR in relation to the gates? It was like the camera panned around outside the wall of the

City of God and there was CCR camped outside the city gates. Everyone was happy, comfortable and relaxed. This Word was confirmed by Bishop Colin Campbell when he visited last year. The Lord is going to give us a good shake up! God s vision is BIG. James Goll says in his book, The Lifestyle of a Prophet, God s vision is big enough to hold the Universe it is His creation. We are being asked to participate in that vision by not relying on what we know of the past but by breaking camp and walking through the city gates into the City of God the Big Tent and discovering the new way he wants to work. We are going to play in the big tent the tent of the Lord s presence at the centre of the Universe. If we are going to play in the Big Tent the City of God, then the first thing we have to do is throw down our crowns. (Rev 4/10.) Whatever we think we are, whatever position we may hold, whatever ministry we may have, whatever gifts we exercise, all of what we think we are and have, has to be thrown down at the feet of the one who sits on the Throne, in all humility, and like the 24 elders, we sing from Rev 4/11: You are worthy our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things and by Your will they existed and were created. Throwing down everything we are, in humility, through repentance and forgiveness, opens the door to holiness. Our goal is not to be a great healer or to have a great ministry but to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. Be holy and as I am Holy, says the Lord. (1 Peter 1/16.) As we walk in holiness, we grow into Him. It is from that place that the Spirit will decorate us with His fruit and the gifts of the Spirit will flow because of our relationship with Jesus. The Pharisees and Sadduces came and asked Jesus for a sign from heaven Jesus said, you know how to interpret the weather but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. He also said it is an evil and unfaithful generation who asks for a sign. Jesus had already performed many miracles and yet they asked for a sign. (Matthew 16/1-4) They did not see the sign standing in front of them in the person of Jesus. He is the sign that God has broken into human history and what was impossible is now possible. We might be tempted to despair at what we see in the world but the Lord says, don t concern yourselves with the things of this world but take heart, I have overcome the world. (John 16.33b.) It is not the sign the world gives us that should be our focus but the sign God has already given us in and through Jesus Christ. We don t have to ask for a sign, we already have the sign; all we need to do is use our spiritual vision - to open the eyes of our hearts; to understand what part of His vision we are called to stand in and deliver His ministry. One definition of vision is the ability to think about or 3 plan the future with imagination or wisdom. (Oxford Dictionary) God s people need a vision because as Scripture says, Where there is no vision the people perish. (Proverbs 29/18) Our plans for the future have to be filled with His imagination and His wisdom not ours and so we have listened, we have heard and for the very first time at the recent State CCR meeting, CCR Statewide has adopted Is 54/2-3, as its vision. Enlarge the site of your tent and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; don t hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left and your descendants will possess the nations and will settle the desolate towns. (Is 54/2-3) Let s have a look at this Scripture: 1. Expand the site of your tent; How big are our expectations? How big is the vision we hold? Do we expect the impossible? The Lord would say, When you operate out of the Big Tent you catch my vision and everything is possible. We pray - open the eyes of my heart to see your vision, Lord. 2. Allow the curtains of your habitations to be stretched out; The word 'curtain' does not quite express the sense here. We might describe a curtain as the drapes hanging in theatres to conceal the stage from the spectators this Scripture is the ultimate curtain call! The word curtain here, however, denotes the canopy or cloth used in the making of the tent. What this Scripture is saying is that the boundaries of the church, the boundaries of CCR, are to be greatly enlarged, in order to accommodate the vast numbers of people coming in. That is the visual we have of stretching the curtain. 3. Lengthen your cords; Because the tent is now much larger, the cords have to be lengthened and every post on the tent needs a cord. The cords are a symbol of all members of CCR pulling together tightly to maintain the broader vision. We need to work together in unity to hold the vision in place. We need to see ourselves as not only a prayer group but as a united CCR, stretching the covering of the Lord over greater territory. It takes a community to hold this vision. 4. Strengthen your stakes. Deepen our commitment to holiness by driving our stakes deeper into Christ, the Rock anchor ourselves in unity with Jesus from whom we draw all the strength we need to hold the course. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to bind us together with cords that cannot be broken. We are all unique, we have been sanctified through baptism and confirmation and we have experienced the release of the Holy Spirit through those Sacraments, in our hearts and minds. We come into a relationship with Jesus, one at a time, but we operate as a community of gifted people. God has the ability to bring us together into a wonderful symphony.

We are not like the woman who walks into a store to return a pair of eyeglasses that she had purchased for her husband a week before. "What seems to be the problem, madam?" says the optometrist? "I'm returning these glasses I bought for my husband, he's still not seeing things my way. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit to help us see things God s way not our way. One of the suggestions I have made to the CCR Executive and the CCR Mission Team is that we, all prayer groups and ministries, conduct continuous LISSs. When one region finishes, another starts and upon rotation, where possible, conduct them in different parishes within regions. The reward is that we will spread out to the right and to the left and our descendants shall possess the nations and settle the desolate towns. There will be nowhere that God will not reach even in the desolate areas where His presence will turn these places into a lake. Is.35. May we all catch and hold the vision of the Lord and be open to a new way of working together, as one, in His Kingdom. Len Airey, President In appreciation of Gail Creswell Face-to-Face Editor On behalf of CCR Brisbane, I express appreciation of Gail Creswell for the beautiful presentation of Face to Face over the past couple of years. Gail s artistic skills have been put to good use within the Church but particularly within Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Regrettably, Gail has had to resign as Editor due to ill-health. We pray that the Lord will provide the healing her body needs and we call on the breath of the Spirit to blow from the four winds and breathe new life into Gail and restore her body to fullness and healing in Christ Jesus. We thank you sincerely for your wonderful effort Gail, especially during the difficult times. Congratulations on a job well done! Welcome to a new Editor The June edition of Face-to-Face will be prepared by a new Editor, Juliana Tan who has kindly volunteered to take responsibility for its preparation. We welcome Juliana and express our gratitude to her for taking up this ministry. Thank you so much, Juliana. CCR is very grateful. 4 CELEBRATING A CHARISMATIC JUBILEE Fr Bob Hogan. BBD. Book review by Barbara Flynn Drawing on extensive experience in Catholic Charismatic Renewal extending from his youth to priesthood in parishes and with Archdiocesan engagements, Fr Bob Hogan offers substantial reflections on a great Spirit of Grace which has influenced thousands of Catholics worldwide over a fifty year period. Successive Popes and Bishops, since Vatican II, have affirmed and encouraged Catholic Charismatic Renewal. It is an Ecclesial Movement with international headquarters in the Vatican. Fr Hogan s material is instructive with both a pastoral and theological content. He deliberates on issues in Catholic Charismatic Renewal familiar to him in the United State of America. However, his teachings have universal applicability as the Golden Jubilee of his noteworthy Ecclesial Movement is the celebration of a sovereign action of God two years after the end of Vatican II. As a theologian Fr Hogan explains the hierarchical and charismatic dimensions of the Church as co-essential, a specific teaching by Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI which he notes is sometimes overlooked. The Holy Spirit is evident in workings of the whole Church since its foundation by Jesus Christ. Fr Hogan quotes Pope Francis in saying that the Charismatic Renewal is a Pentecostal grace for the entire Church. Throughout his teachings on the graces of Christian belief and practice, Father devotes significant material to explaining charisms and the essential understandings for all Catholics of the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives and in the life of the Church. His material frequently refers to the Catholic Catechism, the Scriptures (the Acts of the Apostles) and the writing of recent Popes. In Chapters one and two, he recalls the beginnings of Catholic Charismatic Renewal at the Retreat Centre attached to Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA on the weekend February, The movement has no human founder. Several students of the University under the governance of the Spiritan Fathers (the Holy Spirit Fathers) had made a novena to the Holy Spirit seeking to experience the presence and power of the Spirit as people had done in the early Church. On Pentecost evening they had a powerful and transforming experience. Through their commitment and perseverance in prayer, they were baptised in the Holy Spirit or transformed spiritually in their lives by a release of the Holy Spirit. Fr Hogan explains this powerful gift of God s love as a most significant aspect of a person s faith transformation wherein individuals are

led to make an adult Christian commitment through their surrender in prayer to God s gift of the Holy Spirit. He writes with enthusiasm about this phenomenon which is anchored in his vast experience and his involvement where he has witnessed hundreds of individual lives transformed when a person allows the Holy Spirit to awaken in them the graces received in their baptism and confirmation. Of this experience of individuals, Pope Francis is quoted as saying, it is to be shared with the whole Church to bring about its mission of evangelisation. There are nine chapters in this 140 page book. It does give a fresh look at Charismatic Renewal and the Charismatic Dimension of the Church because Fr Hogan takes the reader into an appreciation of the riches within Catholic belief and practice available to all through the Church s teachings. Receiving Baptism in the Holy Spirit, through Charismatic Renewal, has led thousands of people into a deeper commitment to the Church s teachings; a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; and knowledge of the living presence of the Holy Spirit. Chapters three, eight and nine deal in turn with Christ/Messiah; Praise and Worship in the life of the Church; and Mary, Model and Teacher deserve special recognition as their content develops out of Hebrew Scriptures informing Christian belief. Celebrating a Charismatic Jubilee is a mature reflection on an Ecclesial Movement described by Pope Benedict XVI as a gift of the Lord, a precious resource to enrich the whole Christian community. For those who are questioning and wondering and those who are involved, this material inspires and informs. Pope Francis is enthusiastic and expectant of the Great Jubilee to be celebrated in Rome with Catholics and non-catholics in June, People praising God at the opening Jubilee Mass Message from Sr. Carmel During this Lenten Season and as Easter approaches, the catechumens are preparing for Baptism and full initiation into the Body of Christ. Immediately after they are baptised (or we were baptised) there is an anointing with chrism. The chrism will be consecrated just before Easter in the Cathedral together with the other blessed oils for Baptism and the Sick. Consecration means a prayer of dedication of a thing or a person to be set aside for divine service. Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and a sweet smelling balsam. It is only used at Baptism, Confirmation, and for the ordination of a deacon, priest and bishop. In other words it is very important because the prayer is about anointing us for the service of God. Let s go back a step. Jesus was acclaimed as the Messiah, which is Christ when translated into Greek (and our English variation) and means the anointed one. The anointed one is someone empowered by God to carry out a special task. Do we realise that in our own lives? That each of us were anointed, prayed over, to be empowered by God to live as active members of the Body of Christ. We use the consecrated oil to signify what the Holy Spirit is doing within each one of us. Specifically we are anointed like Christ as Priest, Prophet and King. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live always as members of his body. So what exactly does that mean? What is our job description? We are anointed to be active members of the Priesthood of the Faithful. What does a Priest do? Priesthood is about offering sacrifice. Jesus offered the sacrifice of himself. He gave of himself. We are to give of ourselves first of all in prayer as we pray for, with and on behalf of others. Do we remember every day to pray for others, to pray with others (either in person or in spirit) and on behalf of those 5

who cannot or do not pray for themselves? Jesus prayed. Do we unite our prayer with his? What about being a prophet? A prophet is someone who reminds us about God. We don t have to stand on a soap box in the shopping centre, for example, and preach to everyone about Jesus. But we can do this very effectively in our homes, in our work places, in our conversations and relationships, by the way we act and speak. For example, how loving are we in our speech to, with and about others? How honest are we in our dealings with others? How well do we do our work? How reverently do we speak of God? During a Religious Education Lesson, I once asked a class of Year 9 s in a State School what was a prophet? The first answer was that it is when you did a good deal on something. I explained that this prophet was a different thing. [Bear in mind that I d had a big fight with God on the way to this class because I thought they were learning nothing and I definitely was not getting anywhere with them, I d made up my mind that this would be the last lesson. I definitely was not going to turn up any more.] After they made a few more guesses on this question I said that a prophet is someone who reminds us about God. One lad, who for the past six months had always spent the lesson staring out the window, spun round in his seat and said, Please, Miss, that s what you do for us each week! I went weak in the knees. Another spoke up, Yes. Thanks, Miss. God got me and I continued on for the rest of the year. Then what about the Kingship? Early kings were chosen because they had some extra ability, possibilities of good leadership and a care for others. Jesus showed us that being a king was not about lording it over others but about serving Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. Being a king is about being prepared to share of our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of others. Sometimes we can be so pre-occupied with our own agenda that there is no time for others in our life no time for ordinary conversation, no time to lend a helping hand, no time just to be with someone who needs someone to be with them for a little. Then there is our talent. Do we share our know-how even about the simplest things, or do we keep it to ourselves and let others make their mistakes or struggle with situations that could do with a helping hand? What about our treasure? So often we think of treasure in terms of money but it is much more than that. Really, it is all we are. We have had the advantage of learning so much both in knowledge and living. So often I see children who really do not know how to behave because no one has bothered to teach them. That is sad but it is true. 6 Just recently when approaching a group of fifteen year olds I saw one of them take something out of his pocket, tear off the wrapping, put something into his mouth and then throw the paper on the ground. I made some sound and he turned on me and asked, So what? I said that I thought that wasn t exactly the right thing to do. Quite respectfully he asked me what I meant by right. I answered that wrong was anything that didn t help people or our world. On the other hand, right was something that helped others and built up our world. He thanked me, bent down and picked up the wrapping and walked to a waste bin not far away and disposed of the rubbish. We have been freed from sin, given a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit. We have been anointed, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to live always as members as the body of Christ. LET US STAND UP AND BE COUNTED FOR CHRIST. Thank You Sr. Carmel For many, many years, Sr. Carmel Boyle, PBVM, has been contributing her practical wisdom, advice and every-day experiences through the articles Sister has prepared for Face-to-Face. Sr. Carmel has been an inspiration to countless numbers of people through her many ministry hats wherever the Lord has led her. Members of CCR have been very fortunate to experience her good counsel over decades and we continue to experience the grace of God through her ministry. Sr. Carmel is also Spiritual Companion to the CCR State Service Committee. We are extremely grateful to you, Sr. Carmel. (Editor.) CCR Brisbane Healing Prayer Centres A TESTIMONY OF HEALING I had been very anxious for my teenage daughter who had started dating a man who was a few years older than she was. The anxiety began to overwhelm me and I decided to receive prayer ministry for it at the CCR Brisbane Healing Prayer Centre. During the prayer appointment, I received a revelation that the root cause of my anxiety was actually from my own personal negative experience with a young man whom I had dated when I was a teenager myself. The prayer ministers prayed for the healing of this traumatic memory. I then had a vision of Jesus embracing the young man whom my daughter was dating. After that prayer session, I no longer felt anxious when my daughter went out with that young man and within a couple of weeks, they decided to end their relationship. Thank God for His healing grace!!

New Prayer Ministers Commissioned by the Archbishop Nine new prayer ministers were commissioned by Archbishop Mark Coleridge during the CCR Jubilee Mass. Ministers will provide healing prayer at the two Healing Prayer Centres established under the authority and direction of the Archbishop one at the CCR Centre, Northgate and the other at the Church of the Twelve Apostles, Jindalee. Ministers have completed two years of part-time training to be part of this important ministry which is a major commitment. Congratulations to all! Commissioning of prayer ministers by the Archbishop FROM THE BIBLE Extract from the book About the Bible by Fr. Daniel W. Martin, C.M. The Book, which is the Bible, is made up of many little books. They were written by many different authors and over a period of at least 500 years, were put into the form in which we now have them. However, they can rightly be grouped under one title, the Bible, because they have in view the one end for which man lives, because all of them have the one chief and responsible author, God Himself. is not the history of civilisation. Because God comes to man, His creature, He teaches man what he really ought to be as a creature of God. From the Bible, you will learn that the only worthy purpose of existence in our world is to bring all the powers of your life to bear on the reason for your existence as God s creature. A man is truly and perfectly a man when he lives his life generously among others with whom he is bound by ties of common creation, by likeness of being, by his final purpose in life. The Bible reflects the fact of our experience: that we can achieve our true happiness and security in life only in union with others. This is man as God has made him a being who is to live and succeed in the company of and by the mutual efforts of other human beings. This is man as he is reflected in God s dealing with him in the Bible. God deals with him both as an individual and as bound to others with whom he lives and with whom he attains happiness. But the Bible is not just the history of man as God first made him, or as he ought to be, according to that first creation. These truths about man that are made known in the bible are truths that man could have discovered by himself, through his God-given intellect. The fact that he didn t get all of that together, easily, quickly and surely is the result of the state in which he placed himself by turning away from God. The freedom of man from this state of confusion and the freedom of man so that he can live with God right here and now, is the important subject that runs throughout the whole Bible. All else that is taught is taught in view of this one purpose the salvation or eternal freedom of man from sin so as to live for God. In the form in which we now have them, these books were assembled during a period of at least 500 years but the events they relate extend over a much longer period - from more than 1800 years before the coming of Christ to about 100 years after His birth. The first events in the call of Abraham took place at a time when writing with letters of an alphabet had not come into customary use; the last events took place when Imperial Rome had already gathered the ancient world around the Mediterranean Sea into one worldwide empire. Because God come to man in the circumstance in which he lives, we can learn much about the development of civilisation in the Bible; but the Bible 7
