Keightley Executive Director Catholic Community Foundation of the Diocese of Richmond 7800 Carousel Lane, Richmond, Virginia (804) or Catholic Diocese of Richmond LIVING OUR MISSION ANNUAL REPORT

2 A Special Letter of Gratitude From The Most Reverend Francis X. DiLorenzo, Bishop of Richmond It is with great joy and deep gratitude that I thank you for your generous support of the campaign. I am truly humbled by your response and that of our many parishioners and pastors in making this campaign a resounding success. As I reflect on my time as Bishop of Richmond, I think of all we have accomplished together and how our Church has grown in amazing ways. More children and young people are becoming actively engaged in the Church; more people are discerning their call to priesthood, permanent diaconate, and religious life; more families are better able to afford to send their children to Catholic Schools; and more people are getting vital assistance for basic human necessities. Because of the success of the campaign, I can say with certainty that this growth will continue and our Church will continue to thrive well into the future. I am truly humbled by your response and that of our many parishioners and pastors in making this campaign a resounding success. It is in this spirit of thankfulness that I offer this report for your review. Inside you will find information about how the success we ve achieved together is being translated into momentum and action that will advance the mission of our Diocese. Please accept it with my deepest appreciation. With my prayers and best wishes for God s continued blessings, and in gratitude for your act of faith-filled generosity, I remain Sincerely yours in Our Lord, Most Rev. Francis X. DiLorenzo Bishop of Richmond

3 Unlocking the Future The campaign will have a significant impact on the future of our Diocese a truly historic event in our lives as proud Catholics. From the outset, this first-ever diocesan endowment and capital campaign was envisioned to build support for our Catholic Church in ways never before realized. This campaign has allowed us to progress beyond promising ideas and into the realm of significant and practical building blocks to fund ministries and programs for generations. Our landscape has significantly changed through the creation of critical (and, in many cases, new) funds and endowments to strengthen our parishes, support our clergy, develop our future Church and advance our shared mission. Here are some examples of how this will occur. The cost of educating our future priests is increasing and the addition of over $3 million to our endowment will assist to cover this cost. Our priests who give their lives in service to the Church will realize a near fully-funded pension plan and the establishment of new funds for health insurance and long-term care for retired priests. Parishes have capitalized on this opportunity to raise money for major repair, renovation and construction projects. Some parishes will be able to more effectively build for the future by funding their own endowments within the Catholic Community Foundation. Other funds for evangelization, youth, young adult, campus ministry, social ministry and tuition assistance will impact our future leaders. This historic response of over 24,400 gifts and pledges to the campaign have put us on the path to unlock the future s financial challenges. With this opening comes hope, determination and opportunity to advance the mission of the Catholic Church in our Diocese and to the world. We are thankful for the tremendous support from our committed Catholics and we look forward to a brighter future as a result of. With blessings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Margaret I. Keightley Executive Director Catholic Community Foundation of the Diocese of Richmond Michael J. McGee Chief Financial Officer Catholic Diocese of Richmond Gifts by Level One of the most historic aspects of the campaign was the unprecedented level of generosity received from over 24,400 gifts. By joining together in this campaign, the clergy, religious and lay faithful have empowered the future of our Catholic Church. $1,000, Gifts $500, Gifts $250, Gifts $0, Gifts $50, Gifts $25, Gifts $,000+ 1,582 Gifts $5,000+ 2,749 Gifts Below $5,000 19,447 Gifts GRAND TOTAL 24,406 Gifts 5 mil mil 15 mil 20 mil 25 mil $13,355,0 $4,350,326 $3,578,740 $7,066,983 $8,793,595 $,318,047 $19,241,660 $15,371,035 $21,968,693 $4,017,699 2

5 Parish Success Stories The campaign gives us a new opportunity to generously follow the example of Jesus as we reach out to those in need, proclaim Christ s Gospel to those who have not heard it and engage youth and young adults in a way that gives us a future full of hope. Jesus is the one who calls us let us respond with joy! St. Andrew, Roanoke as one of the first parishes to conduct the campaign, St. Andrew was able to meet a very large goal of raising $3.25 million. A majority of the proceeds from their campaign went towards repairing and refreshing their church steeples. This was an important project as St. Andrew serves as an important Roanoke landmark. - Rev. Michael A. Renninger, Pastor St. Mary, Richmond Incarnation, Charlottesville accomplished a large goal of over $900,000. In addition to adding a significant amount to their evangelization fund, the parish will be able to perform major renovations to their campus such as upgrading exterior lighting, renovating bathrooms and the parish activity center and building reserve funds for future needs. St. John the Evangelist, Waynesboro raised a staggering six times their offertory and exceeded their challenge goal. St. John will be able to undertake a project being planned for years and that is building a larger church, complete with handicap-accessible restrooms, more parking and gathering space. Holy Cross, Lynchburg holds the distinction as the first parish over goal in the campaign. With their success came the opportunity to hire a youth and young adult ministry coordinator. In only a short time, the parish has seen a substantial increase in the number of young people participating at the parish. Church of the Epiphany, Richmond exceeded one of the largest standard goals of the campaign at $1.2 million. With the funds returned, the parish will be able to address a diversity of critical needs such as improvements to their facility, evangelization and social ministry as well as preserve funds for future building projects. Holy Rosary, Richmond raised nearly $400,000, eclipsing their goal by 24%. The parish will be able to establish a fund for building projects, an endowment for future ministries and operations as well as increased support for those in need. St. Michael, Glen Allen with the third largest amount raised in the campaign, St. Michael was able to well exceed their goal of $3.3 million (with over $4 million raised). The entirety of their share is going to the building of a,000 square foot community center that will serve to enhance ministry and deepen connectivity among St. Michael s diverse community. Church of St. Therese, Gloucester in their largest campaign to date, the parish was able to eclipse their goal by 81%. The funds returned will allow them to see the addition of a portico, new exterior doors, new exterior lighting and new exterior signage. Sacred Heart, Richmond raised nearly two times their offertory and have realized a major accomplishment with the purchase of an additional building for youth ministry. The building is in great shape and contains three classrooms, a kitchen and a playground giving the parish much needed activity space. St. Bede has been blessed with so many people who made it possible to expand our parish ministry by the building of our church here on Ironbound Road. It is now time to complete that vision and respond to the pressing need of our own time to provide adequate space for the ministries of our parish on the Ironbound Campus and to support the future of the Church here in Virginia. To be a good steward of the gifts given to the parish and respond to the real spiritual needs of our parish families, we need to respond now. I ask your prayers and fearless participation in the mission of the parish and Diocese to make this vision a reality. - Rev. Msgr. Timothy Keeney, Pastor St. Bede, Williamsburg St. Olaf, Norge was able to exceed four times their offertory goal of $2.4 million. With this campaign success, the parish is able to build a new 750-person Church which will be connected to the current parish facilities. The current parish facilities will be reconfigured to serve as a parish hall, classrooms and meeting space. Our Lady of Lavang Vietnam, Hampton received nearly 70% participation from their parishioners and exceeded their goal by 81%. The funds returned are designed to greatly enhance the life of their parish. St. Anne, Bristol having just finished a previous campaign, St. Anne was still able to exceed a large goal of over $800,000 with great participation from its parishioners. The parish s success allows them to significantly reduce their debt and save for future parish maintenance needs. St. Catherine of Siena, Clarksville an extraordinary effort saw the parish nearly achieve 50% participation and eclipse their goal by 75%. From the amount returned, the parish was able to expand the size of their worship space which has been a long-term goal. St. Jude, Mineral raised over three times their offertory and wellexceeded their challenge goal. The parish will be able to accomplish the building of a new parish hall, offices and religious education classrooms. St. Ann, Colonial Heights raised the highest amount in the history of their parish by surpassing the $1 million mark. St. Ann will be able to significantly transform their parish by improving their food pantry, constructing an outdoor pavilion, renovating and expanding their parish kitchen and replacing the windows in the chapel. Blessed Sacrament, Norfolk realized a significant level of campaign participation at 40%. The funds returned will allow the parish to renovate their parish nursery as well as expand their social hall, classrooms, parish library and youth ministry room, all to meet the increased demand for their growing parish. Church of the Holy Family, Virginia Beach eclipsed an ambitious challenge goal of $1.5 million to build a new endowment for social ministry, update their parish kitchen and install a new energy-efficient HVAC unit. 5 6

McGee, Diocesan Chief Financial Officer Parishes are realizing profound and longterm benefits from the capital and endowment campaign. The parishes will retain the majority of the funds raised, an estimated $64,967,000 of the nearly $4,017,699 raised, or.5%. Parishes will use these funds in a variety of ways, including local construction projects, ministries, endowments and debt reduction. The table below outlines some key statistics on how parishes are using their Living Our Mission money: Bishop DiLorenzo s Finance Council forms committee to study the financial challenges facing the Diocese. During the campaign, each parish combined their case for support along with the larger Church case for support. Funding the elements of the larger Church s case is a critical element of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond s long-term, strategic, financial plan. Advancing Our Shared Mission Developing Our Future Church Advancing Our Shared Mission is comprised of five different funds. Long-term benefits of the campaign will be realized in Developing Our Future Church. The McMahon-Parater Tuition Assistance Endowment fund will receive over $6-7 million for its endowment to assist more families in affording a Catholic school education. Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry Endowment will provide a stable source of funding for programs directed at our young Catholics. Many parishes are developing programs in accordance with the diocesan Evangelization Pastoral Plan and the New Evangeliza- tion Ministry Fund will assist with grants. Two of the five funds are the Annual Diocesan Appeal and the Emergency Parish Capital Needs Grant Fund, in which the money is returned directly to the parishes. Funding the Annual Diocesan Appeal allowed the various ministries and programs to continue while the parishes were conducting the Campaign. The Emergency Parish Capital Needs Grant Fund is an example of parishes helping other parishes in their own Diocese to address extraordinary projects in some of our most historic buildings projects that these parishes would not be able to afford without incurring an irresponsible level of debt. Seven parishes received $1,375,000 in grants. The Diocese is investing in its buildings and new Diocesan Distance Learning Centers (DDLC). The DDLC was piloted between the diocesan Pastoral Center and Jubilee House, Abingdon, VA. Now, four additional sites have been outfitted with the equipment to host state-of-the-art teleconferences, distance learning and training. The benefits of this new technology include additional ministry training and sharing of ideas without driving for hours across the Commonwealth of Virginia to attend meetings, saving time and money. Currently located in three schools across the Diocese, the DDLC are being utilized to provide opportunities for increased collaboration among teachers and administrators. Administrators are exploring the benefits of using this technology to expand course offerings for students through shared learning and faculty resources. A new endowment for Social Ministry Outreach and Mission Parishes will stabilize funding in this ever growing area of need. Supporting Our Clergy There is a critical need to increase the funding for priest pension, healthcare and long-term care. The Priest Pension Plan will be nearly fully funded as a result of the campaign New funds for retired priests healthcare and long-term care have been created as a result of the campaign In total, these three areas will receive over $5.8 million The welcome increase in vocations in our Diocese comes along with the need to increase the funding for the cost of educating these men to be our future priests. The campaign will add nearly $4 million to the new Seminarian Education Endowment Fund 8

7 Bishop Supports Seminarians and Retired Priests Through Two important obligations of every Diocese are the education of seminarians and the care for retired priests. While these responsibilities are financially supported in a variety of ways, a major step was taken to bolster their funding through the Living Our Mission campaign. The Catholic Community Foundation established three new funds titled Seminarian and Advanced Education Endowment, Priest Health Care Endowment and Priest Long-Term Care Endowment, in order administer the funds contributed to the Living Our Mission campaign. Once established, each of these endowments received a personal gift to be paid over three years from Bishop DiLorenzo. The campaign is allowing our Diocese to fulfill its financial obligations for the future. With so many people from across our Diocese willing to join in this effort, it was important for me to stand with them. That is why I chose to participate in this campaign in a meaningful way. As Bishop, I know the sacrifices our men make for the Church and its people, and that is why I chose to support them as best I could through this historic campaign, said Bishop DiLorenzo. Bishop DiLorenzo has made known his intentions to support these endowment funds through a planned gift as well. Due to the unprecedented support from the Catholic community through the campaign, over $6 million will be secured to provide health insurance and longterm care for retired priests as well as additional funds for the Priest Pension Plan. For the education of our future priests, the new endowment will receive over $4 million to support seminarian education and priests advanced education. A Very Special Note of Thanks From the Pastors Advisory Committee Dear Friends of our Diocese, Please accept our thanks for your generous support of our first diocesan capital campaign:. It is through the thoughtfulness and gracious support of many people like you making gifts, big and small, that our lay religious leaders and religious education teachers will enjoy continuing training for their education. In addition, our older priests will be assured of a secure retirement and our seminarians will find their formation adequately supported among many other programs and projects our Diocese undertakes on behalf of our sisters and brothers in the faith. A most important aspect of this capital campaign has been the effort to support work undertaken in your parishes so that the message of Our Lord can touch the lives of those who come through the doors of your faith community for prayerful worship and practical assistance. We trust your pastor and parish staff know how grateful we are to them for the encouragement they gave you, as well as their assistance to the Diocese during this campaign, so that your gift will bear fruit not only for the short term but for years to come. You and other generous contributors are making available the forgiveness, mercy and joy of the Gospel to all those who visit your parish family. There, they can and will find worthy programs, comfortable facilities and most critically open minds, hearts and hands in the service of God and neighbor. Thank you so much for what you have done and, if having pledged, will continue to do for your parish and for the Church in our Diocese of Richmond. It brings to mind the words of St. Paul to the faithful in Corinth: You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce gratitude to God; for rendering of this service not only supplies the wants of the saints but overflows in many thanksgivings to God.
