1 Call to Discipleship (Exodus 18:13-26 & Matt 28:16-20) 24 th January 2016 Today we re going to be looking at Exodus chapter 18 from OT and Matthew chapter 28 from NT so please have a Bible in front of you to follow on. You can take some notes in the sermon outline if that helps you concentrate Intro/Background to Great Commission Last week we looked at Jesus being the True Vine and us being branches that are attached to the Jesus the True Vine And I left us with a question to ponder: [Powerpoint 1 Question] If we are all branches attached to Jesus the Vine and being attached means we must bear fruit who should do the vine work here at St. David s the minister? The elders? Or every person in the congregation? And by vine work we said that this was where someone - planted and watered the seed of God s Word to someone - and God gave the growth. So as we speak God s word to someone - the Holy Spirit enables a response. So who should do this work? The Minister, the elders, everyone? (pause) In our OT passage today - Moses - had a problem where he was overloaded and was trying to do everything himself as he handled all the people s disputes and taught them God s decrees and instructions and he was in danger of severe burnout! Page 1 of 11

2 And I confess that I get a bit like that sometimes and probably more than anyone else here today I need to heed the advice that Jethro, Moses father-inlaw, gives him. Yet I reckon - we can all learn from his advice Here s what Jethro tells Moses in Exodus 18:19-21: [Powerpoint 2 Jethro s advice] 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. 21 But select capable men from all the people men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. So we can see from this passage that Moses passed on God s decrees and instructions to others (that s Vine work) and also got others to share his workload Which is great it s a fine biblical principle that the work in God s kingdom is shared partnership work not just left to one or two [Powerpoint 3 Partnership] And it s a principle that Jesus used when He walked this Earth - He chose 12 men to share in this vine work Page 2 of 11

3 But as we hit our NT passage this morning the partnership is just about to grow exponentially because I want to argue from God s Word today that the partnership of doing God s vine work includes all of us! Please turn your Bibles to Matthew 28 from verse 16 to 20 The context is that Jesus has risen from the dead and appears to his eleven disciples (not Judas) and there in v19 and v20 he instructs them about doing this VINE work he says to them: [Powerpoint 4 verse 19-20] 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Now these words of Jesus are often referred to as the Great Commission Some people may argue that this Great Commission only applies to the 11 apostles that Jesus is talking to - and that this instruction has been fulfilled by them and is not applicable to the church now This is not a new argument: [Powerpoint 5 William Carey] Back in 1792 Rev Dr William Carey a Baptist Minister in England - came up against that same argument - when he wanted to take the Gospel overseas to Page 3 of 11

4 places like India but his superiors were against it saying that the Great Commission didn t apply to the church but only to the first apostles! Carey gave some strong arguments why the Great Commission still applied to the church and not just the apostles He argued that: a. If the Great Commission is restricted to only the first apostles, then so is God s presence with this work; and that disagrees with the end of v20 which says surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matt 28:20) b. If the Great Commission is restricted to apostles, then so is baptizing so every denomination that baptizes is wrong c. He also said to his superiors you can t use the argument that there are many people in England who have not become Christians so why go overseas? Because the people of England have the means of grace and choice, they have faithful ministers preaching to them and they have access to the Bible in the English language. Whereas the people overseas don t have any of this! d. And he also said to his superiors you can t use the excuse that the overseas languages are too difficult or that the climate is too harsh to do mission work overseas. Because both the Roman Catholic missionaries and slave traders have already overcome such things Carey succeeded in his argument and his mission work began. And he became the founder of the Baptist Mission Society (still active today in 35 countries) and he became known as the Father of Modern Missions Page 4 of 11

5 Now some may then argue well okay the Great Commission applies to Missionaries like Carey and people like the mission partners we support here at St. David s (like the Evans family in Japan and the Armstrong s in NT and Stan and Kathy and Mick Alley in Kenya) but it doesn t apply to us locally in our church So are we individually and collectively here at St. David s - also called to make disciples? Does this Great Commission apply to us or not? The Call The Great Commission Well to answer that question we need to have a closer look at our NT passage from Matthew chapter 28 [Powerpoint 6 v17] See v17 when the disciples saw the risen Jesus on that mountain they worshipped him our English translation doesn t tell us enough it literally means they fell down on their knees before him with a mixture of awe and doubt in their hearts And when Jesus spoke to them, His words would have done nothing to calm them down [Powerpoint 7 v18] See his claim in v18 Page 5 of 11

6 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Jesus is basically saying this is who I am I have the authority literally the power and jurisdiction over heaven and earth. That s something only God has so Jesus is claiming He is God here! For the past 3 years the disciples have followed Jesus and seen his power and authority for themselves his miracles, his healing of the sick and the dead, his teaching and his authority over nature So it s on the basis of this unique, supreme and worldwide authority of the risen Son of Man the Son of God that Jesus gives the Great Commission to His disciples Now when we look at these verses 19 and 20 the Great Commission - again [Powerpoint 8 v19-20 Great Commission Our English translation might give the impression that GO is the emphasis of the command. But the main verb of the sentence is actually make disciples which is a command an imperative (aorist active imperative) with 3 subordinate participles hanging off it: Go (participle) (in going or as you go or when you go), baptizing (participle) and teaching (participle) [A Participle is a word formed from a verb (e.g. teaching from the verb teach ) and used as an adjective (e.g. the disciples found themselves teaching the Gospel] Page 6 of 11

7 So baptizing and teaching are the means by which new disciples are made Whatever else baptizing might symbolize or involve; here it refers to the new disciple repenting of their sin & rebellion against God AND submitting to the authority of Jesus, as Lord of their life and this world once they ve done that the new disciple is baptized. And the teaching that the disciples are to do reproduce is the same teaching that Jesus himself has given them. Remember Jesus disciples referred to him all the time as teacher (Matt 12:38: 19:16; 22:16, 24, 36; 26:18) and as Jesus taught them they grew in knowledge and understanding The disciples are now in turn to make new disciples by teaching them to obey everything commanded by their Master, Jesus The Great Commission Applied to us But what about the going? Traditionally (or at least after William Carey) the going has been seen as a mandate to send out missionaries a charter to send out Gospel workers to the world. This can lead local churches like ours to think that we are obeying the Great Commission - if we send money and missionaries overseas or to other parts of Australia. [Powerpoint 9 Emphasis is on making disciples] Page 7 of 11

8 But the emphasis of the sentence is not on the going remember the emphasis is on making disciples The Great Commission is not fundamentally about mission work in far away places. It s a commission that makes disciple-making the normal agenda and priority of every church and every Christian disciple The authority of Jesus is not limited in any respect. He is the Lord and Master of our street, our neighbourhood, our suburb, our workmates, our family, our city, our nation and yes, the whole world! We would never want to stop sending out missionaries to preach the Gospel in places where it is yet to be heard, but we must also see disciple-making as our central task in our homes and neighbourhoods and churches Jesus instruction in verses 19 to make disciples is not just a specific word to the apostles (11 disciples) gathered around him at the time of His resurrection appearance! The 1 st disciples were instructed to make disciples of others. And because the new disciples they made, were under the same lordship of Jesus - and were to obey EVERYTHING that Jesus taught they fell under exactly the same obligation as Page 8 of 11

the original disciples to get on with the job of announcing the Lordship of Jesus and making other new disciples, as did the ones who taught them 9 And that includes us we need to get on with the job of making disciples too! And to get on with that job until the very end of the age (v20) now the phrase end of the age in Greek means forever/eternity or until the end of the world or to the end of one s life. Either way it means for us making-disciples all of our lives until we die! So we Great Commission applies to us? We are all called to make disciples! Making Disciples So if making disciples is the job for us all for life [Powerpoint 10 Definition of Disciple] We d better be clear on what a disciple is: Someone who follows their teacher s rules, teachings and instructions Then we can say that for us to be a disciple of Jesus - is to follow our teacher Jesus and to follow His rules, His teachings and His instructions And to make disciples means to teach and instruct someone to follow Jesus rules, teachings and instructions Jesus puts it this way in John 8:31 [Powerpoint 11 Jesus definition of a disciple] Page 9 of 11

10 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples This means - if we are people here today who believe in Jesus - and if we hold to his teaching we are His disciples So what will that mean for us to make disciples? The apostle Paul gives us a clue in 1 Cor 11 verse 1 [Powerpoint 12 1 Cor 11:1] Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. It literally means imitate me - as I imitate Jesus! I spend a fair bit of time with my 2 grandchildren and Lachlan the youngest always copies and imitates everything Olivia does And in a far greater way that s what the apostle Paul is saying follow his example as he follows Jesus example like a copycat Our goal is not to make church members but genuine disciples of Jesus who follow our example - as we follow Jesus example Now that includes Jesus teaching, his rules, his behaviour, and his life-style AND it may even involve suffering Paul suffered Jesus suffered In making disciples there may well be a cost to us that s what we ll be looking at in 2 weeks time Conclusion In the meantime, let me leave you with a couple of questions again AND a challenge Page 10 of 11

11 If we are ALL called to make disciples as I m arguing that we ALL are [Powerpoint 13 2 questions and a challenge] Are we someone worth following and imitating - as we follow and imitate Jesus? (pause) Is someone watching us and following our example as Christians? If so what are we modelling to them? (pause) And finally the challenge think of someone you could disciple and make a disciple of Jesus write their name down in the sermon outline and commit yourself to working with them in the coming weeks If we all could disciple one person God s kingdom would grow substantially wouldn t it? In the next 3 weeks we ll be looking at: Why Discipleship? The Cost of Discipleship? And How to make Disciples? And we ll learn together skills to disciple that person whose name we ve written down Let s pray Page 11 of 11
